It is a terrible illness without a cause or a cure. Employers, families, friends— you name it. Friends should Walk to End Alzheimer’s because we know that sometimes friends skip out on get-together’s because they need to be home to care for their loved-ones.
We know that Alzheimer’s disease has no cure and is growing more common today in the kupuna (or elderly) population. It is the most expensive disease in the USA that truly stretch families’ time and budget. In some cases, this disease leads families into bankruptcy because the disease lasts for several years, costing families hundreds and thousands of dollars. Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in America. There is no cure and no meaningful drug treatments that eliminates the disease, and this is why we should all Walk to End Alzheimer’s. For our future and for our children’s future. The stories are endless. I knew of a man locked out of his home because his wife didn’t remember him. I spoke to a daughter whose mother couldn’t remember her name. As administrator for BAYADA Home Care – Kaua`i Home Care (1 team out of 52 national team), I know this disease intimately. There are numerous individuals on Kauai who, just like me, know how Alzheimer’s rob us of memories, time, relationships, friends, and family members. We all should Walk to End Alzheimer’s. It will give you satisfaction in knowing that you are doing something for loved ones or friends living with the disease.
We should walk with the support of our employers and alongside our family and friends because it affects everyone. Everyone should walk with universal hope, faith, and love that one day we will cure Alzheimer’s disease. There is a 24/7 Helpline sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association: 808-272-3900. Staffed by Master level Clinicians offering education, support and referrals to local resources. Throughout the island of Kaua`i, support groups and classes are conducted by Alzheimer’s Association staff and volunteers. Visit alz.org/hawaii for more information. This year Kauai’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held on Saturday August 11, 2018 at 8am at the Kapa’a Beach Park.
