LIHUE — The Kauai High School Red Raiders got back on top of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation in 2012.

Although the Red Raiders are defending champions, Kauai looks to be very different this season. With key seniors gone and under new coach Tommy John Cox, Kauai shows little resemblance to its championship roster in 2012.

However, Cox is not running from any challenges and embraces the Red Raiders’ championship past.

“It isn't that tough due to the fact that we have a great administration at Kauai High,” Cox said. “The past three coaches, (Kelii) Morgado, (Derrick) Borrero and (Corey) Aguano have done a great job getting Kauai High football to where it is today. It is now my job to continue to shape these athletes into fine young adults.”

Kapaa High School head coach Kelii Morgado described the Red Raiders as strong favorites in 2013, a sentiment that Cox didn’t quite agree with.

“I expect this season to be a very interesting season in the KIF,” Cox said. “All three teams are pretty evenly matched and I'm sure anybody can beat each other at any

Warriors want crown back Rick Killeen THE GARDEN ISLAND

LIHUE — The Kapaa High School Warriors came within one game of taking the Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship in back-to-back years in 2012.

In 2013, the Warriors and head coach Kelii Morgado hope to move back on top of the KIF standings.

“We would like to prepare for each game as though its a championship game,” Morgado said. “Because in the KIF season of only six games, a loss hurts your chances of a championship tremendously.

We feel that if we prepare well enough, a championship should be attainable.”

Kapaa and Morgado are hoping that the team’s family-like bond will help a younger team perform well through what could be another tight KIF season “Our strength is our leadership and our cohesion as a team,” Morgado said.

“Our captains and seniors are focused and driven.”

“Kauai High has a huge interior and incredible speed and ability at the skill positions,” Morgado said.

“Waimea proves each year that, despite low numbers, the Westside brand of football is a force to be reckoned with.”

Menehune look to compete for title Rick Killeen THE GARDEN ISLAND

LIHUE — The Waimea High School Menehune had its ups and downs in 2012. They had a huge win over the Kapaa Warriors to put themselves in a three-way tie for first place early in the 2012 season before ultimately falling off and finishing the season in third place.

Head Coach Kealii Aguiar and the Menehune hope that its ball-control, brutalizing run game and stingy defense will be enough to hold up with the competition in 2013.

When asked what goals he had for his team this season, Aguiar replied simply, “Graduate all seniors and win the KIF.” A simple answer, from a team that has been known in the past to have a simple formula — run the ball, control the clock, tighten up on defense.

Waimea’s offense has been a throwback in comparison to the pass-happy offenses of the KIF in the past, and Aguiar and the Menehune recognize how much talent will be lined up across from them.

“Kauai High is very talented and has a lot of returners,” Aguiar said. “They will be very quick and physical on offense and very scrappy and tough on defense. Their coaching staff is top notch — Kapaa is very well coached and have very talented playmakers on offense. Defensively they look lean, quick and will fight to the whistle.”

Aguiar described his team’s strengths as having good leaders, team cohesiveness and his assistant coaches, while recognizing that Waimea’s depth could cause problems for the Menehune.

Waimea has the fewest players of any roster and injuries could play a big factor

in the Menehune season.

The Menehune opened up its season playing Anuenue and showed signs of dominating on the ground. However it was the mistakes and turnovers that
