THE HENLEY COLLEGE TIMELINE 1778 The foundation of The United Charity School brought together the free grammar school and Dame Periam’s Charity School – operating as two distinct centres of teaching and instruction within the town.

1609 In parallel with the development of the free grammar school, the Dame Elizabeth Periam’s Charity School was founded, catering for 20 poor boys of the town undertaking an apprenticeship.

1604 A free grammar school was founded, in accordance with the wishes above by James I, for the “education, institution and instruction of children and youth in grammar and other good learning”.

1602 Augustus Knapp left £200 in his will with the express aim of founding a free grammar for “the instruction of youthful people” within two years of his death.

8

1873 The School of Science and Art and Technical Instruction, known as ‘The Institute’ was founded in the town of Henley and was based in Hart Street.

1892 The Henley Grammar School was formed, bringing together Dame Elizabeth Periam’s School and the free grammar school.

1928 The Henley Grammar School moved to Rotherfield Court, as a County High School and widened its admissions to include girls.

1959 The Institute moved to new premises on Gravel Hill – now known as Deanfield Campus – and was renamed the South Oxfordshire Technical College.

2017 The Henley College came number 6 in the National Centre for Diversity’s Top 100 index, recognising the best organisations in relation to fairness, respect, equality, diversity, inclusion and engagement.

2010 The Henley College became the first college in the UK to be granted a change in status from a further education college to a designated sixth form college.

1987 The merger between King James’s College (based at the current Rotherfield site) and the South Oxfordshire Technical College (based at the Deanfield site) took place, giving birth to The Henley College as we know it today.

1976 Following the cessation of younger pupils being admitted from 1974, the transition from Henley Grammar School to Sixth Form College, known as King James’s College, was completed.

2022 A brand new hospital ward is opened, alongside state-of-the-art teaching facilities and healthcare equipment.

2023 Investment and comprehensive refurbishment of the D5 building along with new equipment such as VR headsets, 3D printers, computer networking data cabinet and robotics. This has created a transformed space to accommodate qualifications in growth areas including digital, computing, business, health and engineering.

2025 Brand new Creative Media Hub, offering students industry-standard facilities and opportunities to collaborate with top employers in the Thames Valley. It features a TV studio, photography suite, and recording studio.

2027 2020 The Cuthbert Suite was opened to provide a digital working space for students on the Deanfield Campus, and the Art department was completely refurbished to create a Creative Arts Hub on the Rotherfield Campus.

Celebrating 40 Years of The Henley College, 2027 marks 40 years since The Henley College was established in its current form, following the merger of King James’s College and South Oxfordshire Technical College in 1987. Building on centuries of educational heritage in Henley-on-Thames, we celebrate our past while looking confidently to the future.

Poppy is The Henley College’s much-loved welfare dog, owned by Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead Emma Holmes. With her calm and friendly nature, she provides a reassuring presence for students, whether helping someone feel more comfortable during a difficult conversation, offering a moment of calm or simply brightening their day. “Poppy has a wonderful way of helping students feel at ease. Sometimes she makes it easier to start a conversation, and sometimes students simply need a few quiet minutes with her. She brings warmth and calm to our welfare provision and is a very special part of our College community.” Emma Holmes Designated Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead Responsibility for Children in Care and Young Carers

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Personal and Professional Development (PPD) is central to the Henley experience, ensuring every student receives consistent, personalised support throughout their time at College. Each student has a dedicated PPD Tutor, who acts as a key point of contact between students, parents or carers and teaching staff. Your tutor will help you manage your time, stay organised and motivated, overcome challenges and make informed decisions about your future.

PPD is also about you as an individual. Your tutor will meet with you one-to-one each term to review youracademic and essential skills progress, discuss any challenges and support your wellbeing. They are also available throughout the College day when you need additional advice or guidance.

Through compulsory weekly PPD sessions, students develop essential skills that universities and employers value, including teamwork, planning, communication, listening, problem solving, creativity and leadership skills. Sessions also explore contemporary issues and provide opportunities for discussion, helping students build confidence, broaden their perspectives and develop positive relationships with their peers.

As you progress through Henley, your PPD Tutor will support you to set goals, reflect on your achievements and plan your next steps, whether you are considering university, an apprenticeship or employment. Our aim is simple: that you leave Henley not only with strong qualifications, but with the confidence, independence, resilience and skills to succeed in whatever comes next.

Our commitment to developing these essential skills is strengthened through our work with the Skills Builder Partnership, supporting the College’s approach to preparing students for education, employment and life beyond the classroom.

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE At The Henley College, our students join us at a decisive moment in their education. They have spent many years in school and now step into an environment that will shape their future direction. The next two years are about more than courses and grades. They are about growth, challenge, and possibility. Everything we do is designed to help our students master their subjects, understand how they learn, and discover their voice. Our teaching is rooted in quality. We place great emphasis on mastery, cognition, metacognition and oracy because these are

the foundations that allow students to think with confidence, to question, to connect ideas and to communicate them clearly.

It is not enough to learn; our students are encouraged to understand how they learn and to take ownership of that process. In doing so, they gain a deeper knowledge of their subjects and the independence to excel. We believe potential should never be limited. Alongside their courses, students have access to a rich programme of supercurricular and enrichment opportunities that broaden their horizons and raise their ambitions. From specialist societies to work placements and external competitions, these experiences open doors and prepare students for university, apprenticeships, and careers. Our Aspire Programme supports gifted and talented students, while our Oxbridge Co‑ordinator works closely with those aiming for places at the world’s most competitive universities. The College is an inclusive community where every student is known and supported. We recognise that each individual arrives with different strengths and aspirations, and our role is to nurture both. The Personal and Professional Development Programme helps students build the skills and resilience they will need long after they leave us. We want every student to flourish as a scholar, as a professional, and as a person.

Through high expectations, expert teaching and structured support, students are challenged to achieve strong outcomes while developing the knowledge, skills and character they need for their future. Progress is closely monitored, with targeted support and challenge provided where needed. But success at Henley is about more than qualifications. Our ambition is to develop confident, capable young people through four important principles: Communication, Creativity, Care and Collaboration.

the growing national focus on ensuring post-16 education develops the skills employers and the future workforce need. At Henley, we combine academic excellence with vocational and technical breadth, giving students both strong intellectual foundations and opportunities to develop practical, transferable skills.

We encourage students to become articulate and thoughtful communicators, able to express themselves with clarity and confidence. We nurture creativity through problem solving, design, performance and innovation; promote care, responsibility and respect for others; and develop collaboration, recognising that the ability to work effectively with others is essential at university, in employment and throughout life.

Our students progress to universities, competitive degree apprenticeships and professional careers, equipped to make confident choices about their next steps.

Our curriculum also responds to the changing world beyond College. The establishment of Skills England reflects

CAREERS

Catherine Mattingly Careers Lead

At The Henley College, careers education extends far beyond the Careers Office. Our ambition is to create a whole College culture where students are encouraged to explore where their subjects, strengths and interests could take them and to think ambitiously about their future. Our careers programme is shaped by the Gatsby Benchmarks, the nationally recognised framework for high quality careers guidance, and evaluated through the Compass tool. Our dedicated Careers Lead and two experienced and knowledgeable Careers Advisers work closely with teaching teams across the College to connect subjects with relevant industries, professions and progression routes. Students benefit from employer encounters, industry specialists, workplace experiences and curriculum guest speakers, as well as former Henley students returning to share their professional journeys and expertise. Our extensive employer and industry network includes established connections with Cisco, CIPHR, Softcat, Invesco and Evolito, alongside Zzoomm in Engineering and Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in healthcare. In Sport, our connections include Gloucester Rugby, Saracens Rugby Club, Wycombe Wanderers Sport & Education Trust, Reading Rockets Basketball and Henley FC, as well as Origin, Leander Club and Henley Rowing Club. 20

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE The world of work is changing rapidly, and we want our students to be ready for it. Employers increasingly value a combination of knowledge, technical capability and strong human skills, including analytical and creative thinking, communication, adaptability, resilience and the ability to work effectively with others. Students have opportunities to develop and demonstrate these qualities through their studies and through meaningful experiences with employers, industry professionals, work placements and our alumni network.

BEYOND HENLEY We want careers to be part of everyday College life, not something students think about only when making their next decision. Our growing alumni network provides authentic insight into different careers, broadening horizons and helping every student leave Henley with the confidence, ambition and experience to take their next step.

At The Henley College, our focus is on ensuring every student feels informed, supported and confident about what comes next. Whether they are considering university, an apprenticeship, employment, a gap year or another pathway, we help students explore their options and make choices that reflect their strengths, interests and ambitions. Our Careers Team provides personalised one-to-one guidance, including support with university applications, apprenticeships, employment, work experience, volunteering and gap-year opportunities. Careers education is also embedded across the wider College experience, working alongside teaching teams, PPD, Aspire and enrichment, with specialist support for students with the highest academic aspirations. Our annual Careers Fair and University & Higher Education Fair connect students with employers and universities, while Unifrog and our regular Careers & University newsletter provide further information, opportunities and guidance. Ultimately, we want every student to recognise their potential, broaden their horizons and take their next step with confidence.

ASPIRE

The aspire programme is designed to support and maximise the potential of gifted, aspirational and more able students during their time at the henley college, regardless of their background. We are dedicated to nurturing ambitious and high-achieving students to succeed on their chosen pathway by providing tailored academic, personal and professional development opportunities, preparing them to apply to competitive higher education institutions such as Russell Group universities and Oxford and Cambridge, and equipping them to pursue ambitious careers in areas such as law, medicine and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The Henley College Aspire programme is designed for A level students who typically achieve predominantly grades 7 to 9. Students on an A level pathway will be automatically enrolled onto our 4-week Academic Skills Programme at the start of their first year, encouraged to undertake an Extended Project Qualification and will attend designated tutor groups. However, students with lower GCSE grades who demonstrate high achievement in their A level studies may also be added to the Aspire cohort and transferred to an Aspire Personal and Professional Development group. Alongside the core Personal and Professional Development programme, these sessions will have an additional focus on preparing

22

students for Russell Group and Oxbridge applications, as well as competitive degree apprenticeships. Personal and Professional Development sessions will help students develop the knowledge, skills and experiences needed to strengthen their university applications, while also supporting them to master higher-level skills through the national Skills Builder framework. Students on the Aspire programme will also have the chance to work closely with our Aspire Programme Lead, Aspire Careers Adviser and Oxbridge Coordinator to receive expert advice and guidance. Aspire students will also be encouraged to become an Aspire Student Ambassador and take part in the 10-week Aspire Future Leaders Award which will allow them to play a vital role in representing the College, advocating for the student voice, shaping College policy and preparing themselves to run for the Student Union in their second year. Further to this, there is a range of Aspire events and enrichment opportunities that are open to all aspirational students at the College regardless of GCSE results. These include: ● Specialist university talks and careers events ● Subject masterclasses

Assistance with university applications through the expert Careers team ● Support with College and national competitions such as essay, public speaking and STEM competitions ● Mastering skills workshops in communication, collaboration and creativity In short, Aspire will help you to achieve academic excellence, expand your opportunities and lead with confidence. ●

Applicants with a GCSE profile of grades 8 and 9 may apply for a four A level programme at The Henley College. However, this does not apply to students wishing to study Further Mathematics alongside Mathematics A level. For these entry requirements please check our website. Competitive universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, typically base their offers on three relevant A levels, usually requiring A or A* grades. A strong fourth A level, particularly in a contrasting subject, can nevertheless demonstrate valuable academic breadth. Alternatively, Aspire students may choose to study three A levels alongside the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is highly valued by universities and demonstrates sustained super-curricular engagement with their chosen subject. If you have any questions regarding a four A level pathway or the EPQ, please contact Eleanor Witcher, the Aspire Programme Lead: aspire@henleycol.ac.uk WWW.HENLEYCOL.AC.UK

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION

The Extended Project Qualification is a highly regarded supplementary qualification, which is equivalent to half of an A level, that allows you to develop valuable skills and develop genuine expertise in your chosen field of study. The EPQ places you in control of your own learning. You will be assigned an expert supervisor who will support you throughout your project while helping you develop academic research, project management, academic writing, presentation and critical thinking skills. We also work with leading universities to shape our teaching in response to the latest academic advice and research, ensuring you develop the skills needed for higher education. Over approximately eight months, you will independently plan, manage, complete and evaluate a substantial project, producing a portfolio of evidence that is internally assessed and externally moderated.

“I teach A level English, deliver the Extended Project Qualification and coordinate the College’s Aspire programme. As a former Henley College student who went on to achieve a first-class degree, I am passionate about helping students achieve ambitious outcomes, no matter their background. I work with Aspire students to set their goals and collaborate with the wider Aspire team (Oxbridge Coordinator, careers and PPD tutors) to help them achieve these ambitions. I enjoy working with my colleagues, universities, and local and national partners to provide events, mentoring and guidance for our high-achieving students.”

Jack achieved A*A*A*A* in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Computer Science. “Henley College supported me in achieving A*s in all four of my subjects, and I am thrilled that this will enable me to now go on to study Computer Science at Cambridge University. Jon Lagden was very supportive and flexible in allowing me to sit Maths a year early, and I really appreciated Andrea’s preparation support for the admissions test, and Joanna’s support with my Personal Statement and application.” Jack was part of our Aspire Programme, and achieved a place at Cambridge University to study Computer Science.

You can choose to complete your project in one of three formats: A dissertation: an extended piece of academic writing, supported by a literature review. ● An artefact: a practical outcome such as a piece of artwork, a garment, a website, or a piece of creative writing (fiction or nonfiction), supported by written evidence of development. ● A performance: planning, directing and delivering a live performance, such as theatre, music or dance, supported by written evidence of development. Students are assessed on their ability to manage a project, their use of academic/critical research, their ability to develop and realise a project and also their ability to review and reflect on the project process. Oxbridge Support “For the past fifteen years, in my role as designated Oxbridge Co-ordinator, I’ve prepared students for application to Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. I’ve developed a comprehensive programme offering information and support throughout the two years of students’ college courses including: monthly bulletins (advertising such outreach activities as subject masterclasses, college/ departmental open days, residential courses, competitions), and regular email contact with individual students and their parents. Specific support is provided during the actual application process, refining of the crucial Personal Statement, co-ordination of the subject-tutors’ reports into the main UCAS academic reference, preparation for the tests and written work which many subjects at Oxford and Cambridge now require before applicants are short-listed for interview, and focus on the interview itself. We’re very proud of our Oxbridge Programme and hope those new students interested in finding out more about what’s involved with making an Oxbridge application will take advantage of all we have to offer when they start their course at The Henley College!”

THE BEST WAY FOR YOU TO LEARN CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE

qualifications to better reflect the skills needed by employers and the economy.

We offer a diverse range of A Levels, vocational qualifications and T Levels, with new V Levels beginning to join our curriculum from September 2027.

T Levels are already a successful and established part of our curriculum, with Henley College students achieving a 100% pass rate. These two-year technical qualifications combine classroom learning with substantial industry placements and are designed with employers to prepare students for skilled employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

Whether you already have a clear idea of your future direction or need some guidance, The Henley College is here to help you find a programme that suits your learning style, interests and ambitions.

If you enjoy theoretical, exam-based learning and are considering degree-level study, A Levels could be the right choice. These rigorous qualifications are particularly suited to students who thrive in an academic environment. If you prefer practical and applied learning, our vocational qualifications provide an excellent alternative. Depending on the programme, vocational courses can be taken individually or as a larger programme equivalent to three A Levels, providing strong progression routes to university, apprenticeships and employment.

VOCATIONAL CHANGES: T LEVELS AND V LEVELS

Technical and vocational education is changing nationally as the Government reforms Level 3 Disclaimer:

From September 2027, the Government will begin introducing V Levels, a new generation of Level 3 vocational qualifications which will gradually replace many existing vocational qualifications as part of the national reforms. The Henley College will introduce its first V Level in Digital for 2027 entry, with further V Levels expected to join our curriculum as the new qualifications are phased in nationally.

EPQ (EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION)

APPLIED A LEVELS

Applied A Levels, sometimes offered by exam boards under titles such as Extended Certificates, provide an alternative assessment model to traditional A Levels, typically combining coursework with examinations. Equivalent to a single A Level, they can often be combined with traditional A Levels to create a programme that balances academic and applied learning. They provide strong progression opportunities into higher education, although entry requirements vary and some universities or courses may require particular combinations of qualifications.

Alongside your studies, you can also choose to undertake an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This standalone qualification allows you to explore a topic of your choice in depth and is typically taken alongside A Levels or other Level 3 qualifications.

As the Department for Education (DfE) continues to review the Level 3 programmes available in 2027, our courses may be updated to reflect the latest guidelines. We are dedicated to offering the best opportunities for our students, so please check our website regularly for the most up-to-date course information and availability. 24

Equivalent to half an A Level in UCAS points, the EPQ develops valuable skills in independent research, critical thinking, planning, analysis and project management. It is highly regarded by universities and can be an excellent addition to your academic profile.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE A LEVELS A Levels are rigorous two-year academic courses with a strong focus on theoretical content. Typically assessed through examinations at the end of the course – either written or, in some cases, practical exams such as those in Art – A Levels are widely recognised for their academic excellence. They hold a prestigious international reputation and remain the primary pathway for students aiming to pursue traditional university degrees.

VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL COURSES Vocational and technical courses combine practical learning with subject knowledge. Level 3 options include vocational qualifications and T Levels, with V Levels being introduced from September 2027. Henley will initially offer V Level Digital. These pathways can lead to university, apprenticeships or skilled employment.

SUBJECT COMBINATIONS Students choose their A Levels for various reasons: they may have a passion for the subjects, a particular interest in a field, or a belief that certain subjects will keep their options open. However, it’s also important to consider how these subjects will support your future goals. With this in mind, selecting at least two subjects that complement each other can be highly beneficial. Such a combination not only makes your studies more cohesive but also enhances your prospects for university, apprenticeships, or employment by providing a strong, interconnected foundation.

This broad and dynamic field allows you to explore various aspects of society, culture, and human behaviour, all while uncovering your place in the bigger picture. Humanities subjects offer you a deeper understanding of the world we live in and the impact we have on it. Humanities subjects not only enrich your mind but also equip you with practical skills for university and a wide range of career paths. You'll develop essential, transferable skills like critical thinking, effective writing, and clear presentation of ideas – abilities highly sought after in fields such as law, advertising, politics, and journalism. Beyond these traditional careers, Humanities qualifications are increasingly valued in sectors like IT, accountancy, sciences, and management consultancy, where strong analytical and communication skills are in demand. At Henley, we offer a distinctive edge with our formal Philosophy programme – one of the few available in the Thames Valley. This unique

qualification attracts students from across the region, making it a standout choice for those seeking a deeper understanding of the world. We also offer Classical Civilisation, a subject that delves into the rich history, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. This programme not only fosters a deep appreciation for the foundations of Western thought but also sharpens your analytical and comparative skills – qualities that are highly valued in sectors like law, education, and the arts. Studying Classical Civilisation provides a broader perspective on modern society, enhancing your ability to critically assess contemporary issues through the lens of history.

LANGUAGES By immersing yourself in the richness of language, culture, and communication, you may not even realise you’re developing key skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. These skills can take you a long way. Communication is at the heart of modern life, and understanding the nuances of language is a key that can unlock doors in life, business, travel, or any career path. Our students enjoy challenging reading and engaging in discussions and debates about ideas expressed in language, whether written or spoken. Our teachers are passionate about their subjects and are committed to helping you enjoy your experience here and succeed. A Level courses in English Language are quite different from GCSEs. You will actively engage with everyday language and understand how it works. You’ll explore why people speak differently, how men and women use language, and how to use language effectively to communicate. In A Level English Literature, you’ll look beyond the characters and plot of books to

think critically about how the author made their choices, as well as the social context of the work. Studying Shakespeare, for example, can involve examining Tudor politics and lifestyles as much as the Bard himself. Students of French, German, or Spanish will be taught by native speakers and have opportunities to travel and participate in exchanges. The foreign language skills you gain will be in demand by future employers and will also prepare you for further study of these subjects at university level. A recent study showed that employees who use a foreign language in their work earn, on average, eight per cent more than their colleagues.

The Henley College is one of few colleges offering a suite of modern languages. Students are able to study any combination of the three MFL subjects on offer. This also opens the door to studying a joint honours degree.

Students are generally discouraged from driving to College for practical and safety reasons. Unless a student has a disability or access issue, there is strictly no parking available on the College sites and the Rotherfield site should not be accessed by car.
