WELCOME Welcome to our spring season of events! As an organisation that puts our community at the heart of all that we do, the team has once again carefully selected a plethora of productions and activities to entertain, inspire and connect, in a whole variety of ways. Telling stories is a common theme in our work. Across 2027 we’ll be sharing stories that take place on our stages, about the activity that takes place behind the scenes, and from you, our community. And we’ll be encouraging you to write a new chapter in your story: to take time for yourself, to rediscover your creative interests, tune in to your wellbeing or be entertained by something unexpected. The world’s troubles can weigh on us all at times, but flick through this brochure and see how we can help to rekindle joy. Keep an eye out for further details in the new year. The spring season at The Base opens with a regular favourite, GENerate (pg 58), which showcases wonderful work created by young people in local education settings. If you haven’t been before, I’d strongly encourage you to head up to the gallery in January as the quality of work each year is a testament to the passion and creativity of the young people and the teaching staff that work with them. This is followed by the latest edition of the everpopular Wildlife Photographer of the Year (pg 59), which shines a spotlight on the animal kingdom and the natural world. Again each year, I am blown away, not only by the talent of the photographers, but the stories they tell through their photos. For our younger story-lovers we have The Lost Property Library (pg 8), where forgotten objects transform into epic journeys, while in the Easter holidays there is a fabulous exploration of where a young girl’s paintbrush will take her in Can’t Sit Still, Polka Theatre and Little Angel Theatre’s Colours, Colours Everywhere (pg 33) which Corn Exchange Newbury has co-commissioned.

PRIORITY BOOKING THU 5 NOV, 10AM

PUBLIC BOOKING THU 12 NOV, 10AM

Also co-commissioned by the Corn Exchange this season is 48 Thoughts Per Minute (pg 13), a brandnew show, created by The Paper Birds and written in collaboration with comedian Jessica Fostekew, about all the things that go on in our heads. A favourite from the programming team when they saw it in Edinburgh a couple of years ago is My English Persian Kitchen (pg 18) – a life-affirming tale about starting over which includes live cooking on stage, and Vamos Theatre returns with Finding Joy (pg 25) – a touching story about a teenager caring for his grandmother.

Team Viking (pg 10) uses storytelling, music and comedy to share what happened when giving a friend the send-off they always wanted. There are adventures with Celtic heroes and villains in Sláine: The Horned God (pg 28), and, for those of you who like spooky happenings, we invite you to the chilling The Turn of the Screw (pg 5). In Mediterranean Echoes (pg 14), Paolo Coruzzi shares songs and tales from across the region, while stories from across the decades are celebrated in The Ronnie Scott’s Soho Songbook (pg 30). Continuing in the music programme we have tributes to a whole range of stars including Robbie Williams, Tina Turner, U2, Bob Dylan and ELO, while new to the programme over in the Old Library we have an afternoon of solo harp from Anna Phillips (pg 21). Comedy fans can enjoy the stand-up anecdotes from Rob Auton, Jon Culshaw, David Eagle, Jack Skipper and Ginger Johnson. For those who like to develop their own skills in workshops and courses (pg 50), alongside popular favourites this term we see new sessions including musical theatre for young people, drama workshops with Redcape Theatre and clowning workshops. Over at The Base (pg 57), you can try your hand at everything from charcoal drawing to jewellery making or wooden spoon carving. Delve into this brochure, turn the pages and see what captures your imagination – we look forward to seeing you soon. Jessica Jhundoo-Evans DIRECTOR

‘ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE, AUDACIOUS COMPANIES WORKING IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH THEATRE.’ THE STAGE ON BLACKEYED THEATRE

A world premiere by Olivier Award-winning playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, based on the seminal ghost story by Henry James. England. A remote country house. A young governess, hired to care for two seemingly angelic children, begins what appears to be an idyllic new life. Yet there is something about the children that hints at a darker presence. Desperate to protect them from what she believes to be malevolent spirits, she finds herself descending into a world of ambiguity, leading to one far-reaching question; are the ghosts real... or a projection of something far more terrifying? A masterwork of psychological suspense and the inspiration for Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, Henry James’ classic novella, The Turn of the Screw is brought to life in this brand-new stage adaptation combining powerful performances, illusion and stylish theatricality.

‘THIS PHYSICALLY DEMANDING DANCE, CHARACTERISED BY AN EXPLOSIVE USE OF RHYTHM, IS AN EXTRAORDINARY SIGHT.’ METRO

In a world torn apart by war, disaster and the invisible collapse of human connection, seven individuals find themselves stranded in the heart of chaos. Confronting the remnants of a shattered world, stripped of certainty and memory, they stumble, fight, and protest; with each encounter, a voice is reclaimed.

LETLALO – choreographed by Vincent Mantsoe Letlalo, meaning 'Skin' in Mantsoe’s native tongue Sotho, draws from African, Indigenous, and contemporary dance languages to explore the deep connection between humanity and the earth. Rooted in ancestral wisdom and inspired by nomadic cultures, the performance reflects on the quiet strength of communities living in harmony. It examines the layers beneath the surface, exploring the true essence of the human spirit, while evoking themes of power, unity, serenity, and interconnectedness.

Team Viking premiered in a tiny meeting room at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe and became a breakthrough hit: critically acclaimed, completely sold out. Now, ten years on, this modern classic returns for a special anniversary edition – as funny, raw and joyous as ever.

Ed just wants to live a life free of hassles or drama.

Harpist Anna Phillips brings her debut album to Newbury.

He feels he’s earned it, but the world has other plans for him.

Trained at the Royal Academy of Music under Catrin Finch and winner of the 2023 Nansi Richards Award, Anna has performed at Wigmore Hall and the Southbank Centre. Her programme moves from Bach and Guridi, to the Welsh composer William Mathias, and closes with the shimmering French repertoire of Grandjany. The award-winning Flabbergast Theatre brings a rambunctious approach to Shakespeare’s muchloved comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Goblins and Sprites run amok as the King and Queen of the Faeries settle a spat and cause havoc among the humans caught up in their machinations. The action focuses on a troupe of players travelling with their beautiful vintage Haywain, frantically multi-roling and bringing the world to life with joy and excitement. Arcadian folk songs, slapstick comedy and mask work combine with a respectful approach to the text, an irreverent attitude and a focus on storytelling to bring the magic of midsummer alive with physical comedy, song and dance.

Two greats of the US and UK roots scene join up for a very special tour. It is a shared love of songs, songwriting, acoustic guitar and two-part harmony singing that bring Sally Barker and Brooks Williams together for The Singer’s Tour. Carter Family fuelled. Everly Brothers inspired. A thing of beauty.

Big voices, big hits from the women who rocked the world! Women in Rock celebrates the artists who broke boundaries, defied expectations, and proved that rock music has never belonged to just one voice. From the raw power of Janis Joplin and Suzi Quatro, to the arena-filling anthems of Tina Turner, Blondie, Joan Jett, Cher, Belinda Carlisle, Pink, Evanescence and Kelly Clarkson, every performance captures the attitude, energy, and spirit that made these artists icons.

E TO SIGN SCAN HER BASE'S UP TO THE IST: MAILING L Spring is all about new beginnings, and what better way to embrace that spirit than by creating something from scratch with your own hands? Our new season is packed with exhibitions, workshops and courses to inspire creativity, bring people together and help you learn new skills. You might have noticed a few changes recently… It’s been about a year since The Base moved to its own ticketing system, so our website looks a little different, and booking may have involved a few extra questions. We’re still managed by the Corn Exchange and remain one big arty family, sharing the same vision and values, but The Base also has its own ambitious plans for the future. We now have our own mailing list, giving us more space to share what’s happening here, tell you about our Base Pass membership scheme, highlight our community work and raise awareness of The Base charity. Sign up by scanning the QR code to the right or by visiting our website. We hope you’ll join us this spring to try something new, discover a hidden talent and make time for creativity. We can’t wait to welcome you! Steph Johnson Gallery Manager
