The year 2021 was monumental for First Tee—Triangle both in terms of the number of young people we reached and the financial support we generated for our work. Our team again successfully navigated the challenges of the pandemic, changing schedules, and other adversities that arose throughout the course of the year.

The Board of Directors is happy to report that our team of dedicated staff and volunteers delivered on our goal of helping young people build the strength and character that will serve them well throughout their lifetime. First Tee—Triangle reached over 1,700 participants, a record breaking number for our chapter, through programs such as We Make Four, Open Practice, and our traditional golf course programs.

We were able to reinstate our Drive4Success programs to more than half of the Wake County Elementary schools that we partner with after a year of not being able to offer this program due to COVID-19. We also brought on two new partner golf facilities, Falls Village Golf Club and River Ridge Golf Club, as new program locations. Finally, our staff has expanded to ten employees to adapt to our ever-growing chapter needs.

As we look to 2022, we plan to complete our $7.5 million More Than a Game Capital Campaign to create our new learning center for local youth at our TriGolf facility on Leesville Road in Raleigh. To date, we have raised 75% of our goal, with $1.6 million left to raise. The learning center will include a 9-hole par 3 golf course, designed by world renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, as well as community spaces for our participants and their families. The learning center is set to break ground in Summer 2022. With the support of our community, we will be able to provide a safe haven to countless young people throughout the year.

For almost 20 years, First Tee—Triangle has worked to address the challenges facing young people in our community, and 2021 was no different. Since our inception in 2004, we have come a long way and have had a positive impact on over 14,000 kids in the Triangle, yet there is still so much left for us to do. This year, we expect to complete our $7.5M More Than a Game Capital Campaign and break ground on our new facility, which will provide a safe haven for our children and affordable access to a game we all love. Additionally, we are taking on the challenging work of transforming our organization to strengthen the work we do, which will have a greater long-term impact on our community and help us build the next generation of Game Changers.

As we begin planning and implementing new strategies, our goal is to ensure that young children and teens have greater access to our program offerings, stay involved with us longer, and ultimately, become more meaningfully impacted by their involvement. Over the next two years, we will begin transforming our organization to improve Retention & Achievement; Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion; and Academic & Social Benefits. We are evolving our curriculum to ensure our programs are relevant to today’s youth, including a move to age-based programming, continuing our emphasis on serving kids and families from traditionally underserved communities, leveraging technology to engage with kids in new ways, and investing in staff and infrastructure to ensure that we have the support and resources to continue the work we do for years to come.

We are committed to helping young people pursue their goals, grow through challenges, collaborate with others, build a positive self-identity, and use good judgment. None of this work happens without the support of each and every one of you who choose to invest your time, talent, and resources in our organization. I am incredibly appreciative of our entire First Tee Family and I thank you for helping us Build Game Changers here in the Triangle!

Age-based programs and digital engagement with kids, teens, and parents help drive retention and advancement in the program, particularly in underserved and underrepresented communities.

Drive4Success Jamaine Dabney

Drive4Success Coach Jamaine Dabney is a fourth-year PE teacher and the lead coach of our Drive4Success program at East Garner Elementary. He has thoroughly enjoyed coaching this program over the last four years for many reasons. He’s grateful for the opportunities to connect and build relationships with his students outside of P.E. class. He also enjoys witnessing the participants’ growth in such a short time, noting that students who enter the program have raw knowledge and skills relating to golf, but within a few weeks of the program, he can see their improvement and development in the sport.

Over the years, more and more students hear about the program, become interested, and will eagerly ask Coach Dabney when they can sign up for the next session. “All in all, it’s a great feeling being able to expose students to a sport that they may have never thought of trying to play, and have an influence on them wanting to continue playing as they grow up!”

Jamaine is a native of Cary, and he graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in Kinesiology.

Now in its fifth year, Drive4Success has continued to expand, now offering programs in 14 Wake County elementary schools. Designed around character building, the after-school program offers students the opportunity to learn basic golf fundamentals, such as putting and chipping, while learning life skills. Last year, we piloted our first successful Drive4Success trackout camp and are continuing to offer this camp to students.

New Programs & Outreach Experiences 5K Foundation In July, we had the opportunity to partner with Chris Kenan, Dewayne Washington, Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, and the 5K Foundation to offer a unique program for a group of children living in the Rochelle Manor Apartments in East Durham.

These kids do not have regular access to safe and purposeful play opportunities and certainly would not think about the game of golf as a sport to play. Eleven kids participated in a week-long program and learned about the game of golf and more from some of our partners, including Teens Against Bullying and The Traveling Tortoise.

Durham Police Athletic League We have partnered with the Durham Police Athletic League for three years in a row, with programs taking place at Falls Village Golf Club and TriGolf. To date, we have served 17 middle and high school students through this program. The DPAL program provides opportunities for local youth to be exposed to various sports and mentors through a free five-week long session. The roles of both the police officers and our coaches are similar in that they all serve as mentors and role models for the youth members while teaching and reinforcing positive values through engagement in sports.

Fore HER Future In April, we had the opportunity to partner with Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Leadership Raleigh 42 group which hosted the first Fore HER Future Golf Tournament at River Ridge Country Club.

This tournament focused on Raleigh’s female leaders mentoring First Tee—Triangle female youth. Over 30 First Tee—Triangle female participants played in the tournament. We want our girls to look up to the top leadership of businesses in Raleigh and see people that look like them, talk like them, and grew up like them.

Pencils & Putters Pencils & Putters is a scholastic support program, with a First Tee twist, that gave many of our Drive4Success kids the structure, education, and mentorship they need during the changing times of COVID-19. In an attempt to expand how we support our Drive4Success families, we created this program that ran on a weekly basis for the length of a normal school day, for five weeks at the NC State University Club. Through Pencils & Putters, we served 259 kids, averaging 16 students per week.

Spotlight: Our Youth Golfers Ava Heaton Ace Level Participant “First Tee has been an important part of my life and has given me confidence as a person, as a female, as a teenager, and as a golfer. I have been in the First Tee program since I was very young and it wasn’t until I entered my teenage years that I really began to appreciate everything First Tee has done for me, and all the people who are associated with this amazing program.

Recently, First Tee—Triangle and Dogwood Country Club graciously presented me with a year-long sponsorship for lessons and unlimited practice sessions as a member of the Dogwood Country Club. First Tee has raised both my spirits and my confidence.”

Kaitlyn Rand Ace Level Participant “First Tee is a place where I always felt like I belonged.

I started at the PLAYer level about 10 years ago and now I’m preparing to complete my ACE certification and graduate high school. The coaches and staff have always been a support system to me whether it was for golf, school, or just the struggles of growing up.

I reached the pinnacle of First Tee when I was selected to play at the Pure Insurance Championship Impacting First Tee at Pebble Beach last fall. It was an experience that can’t be put into words and one I will never forget.

I know it would never have been possible without First Tee—Triangle’s coaches and staff helping to add opportunities to my leadership resume, helping with interview skills, and being a constant source of encouragement to reach this goal. I can’t thank First Tee—Triangle enough for being a part of my life!”

First Tee—Triangle has been the owner of TriGolf, formerly known as Triangle Golf Complex, since January 2020. For over 15 years, we have relied on the generosity of local golf facilities and collaborations with other youth agencies to provide space and access for program delivery.

While we have been fortunate to have experienced a great deal of success over the last several years, we have identified opportunities for continued growth, not only in how many kids we serve, but more importantly in how we serve them. Our Center for Youth Development will be a place where kids can receive positive mentorship and develop experiences that are just as fun as they are meaningful.

Thanks to our founding investors and the generosity of worldrenowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, we are on our way to reaching our $7.5M goal to turn the Center for Youth Development vision in a reality and to create permanency for our programs.
