Japan’s main island won’t be warm in January, but it looks swell. Mt Fuji and the Japanese Alps are cloaked in snow, and low precipitation leaves skies clear and views at their most spectacular – you’re more likely to be able to see Fuji’s iconic cone from downtown Tokyo. Also, cultural highlights such as Kyoto temples are far less crowded. Days are short, but the bright lights of Tokyo will easily counter that. Warming up isn’t a problem either: Japanese onsen (hot baths) and restaurants serving nabe (hotpot) and warm sake at kotatsu (tables with under-heating and blankets) will do the trick.

Japan’s excellent trains run without a hitch, and are super-heated, so you can glide across the country, sightseeing in the warmth as you go. And as this is off-season, room rates are lower, too.

Trip plan: With a JapanRail Pass, explore Honshu’s highlights by shinkansen (bullet train). Link buzzing Tokyo with Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Takayama in the Japanese Alps. Fuji-Hakone National Park can be reached by train from Tokyo.

Need to know: JapanRail Passes must be bought before arrival in Japan.
