GIVING SHAPES OUR LEGACY As Texas Wesleyan University commemorates 135 years of serving Fort Worth, its history reflects a profound evolution shaped by innovation, community partnership and an enduring commitment to students. What began in 1890 as a teacher training college has transformed into a comprehensive university offering more than 40 areas of study across campus, hybrid and online formats. “Our 135-year legacy is built on the bold belief that education changes lives,” President Emily Messer, Ed.D, shared. “Texas Wesleyan continues to grow because our community invests in students ensuring they have the knowledge, skills and opportunities to thrive in an ever rapidly changing world.”

A remarkable chapter in this evolution began when TXWES alumni came together to form the Wesleyan Fund, which serves as the foundation for the university’s long-term financial strength. Since 1990, the fund has grown, expanding opportunities for students and supporting academic innovation.

“The Wesleyan Fund is more than financial support,” Board Chair Glenn Lewis noted. “It symbolizes decades of collective generosity that ensures Texas Wesleyan remains a place where students are seen, supported and inspired.”

Philanthropy has shaped the physical and academic landscape of TXWES for generations. Among the institution’s most dedicated supporters is Lou Baker Martin, a third-generation member of a family who has served on the Board of Trustees.

Reflecting on her family’s legacy of service, she shared, “Texas Wesleyan is part of my family’s story. My grandfather and father believed deeply in this institution’s mission, and I am honored to continue that work. Supporting TXWES means investing in the next generation of leaders who will strengthen Fort Worth and beyond.” Her recent philanthropy helped close the university’s historic campaign, leaving a lasting imprint on campus for years to come.

Philanthropic investments have translated directly into state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, athletic facilities and learning environments designed for today’s students.

Scholarship funding, student-success initiatives and academic centers continue to expand access and elevate the educational experience.

For students, these advancements are not abstract. They shape the daily life and future aspirations of every student.

“Coming to Texas Wesleyan opened doors I didn’t think were possible,” said senior finance major Jeline Rivera. “I wanted to come to the university because of its small atmosphere.

Also, connecting to my mentor, Dr. Sameer Vaidya, dean of the school of business, has helped. It is because of my education and the scholarship allows me to give 100 percent everything I do whether that is leading a student organization, project or assignment and connecting with students and other professionals.”

Rivera, who will graduate in May, has been recruited by several firms and has most recently interned at Ernest and Young. She has accepted a full-time finance position at the firm after graduation.

Senior Ka’Ryan Williams echoed that sentiment: “I am so grateful to receive a scholarship. It came at a time when my family needed the help to financially cover my college expenses. The fact that the university saw great leadership qualities in me makes this scholarship even more meaningful.”

Beyond scholarships and facilities, a defining hallmark of advancement at Texas Wesleyan University has been its enduring commitment to honoring the alumni and champions who embody the institution’s mission and values. That tradition began in 1955 with the inaugural Alumni of the Year Award, presented to Marvin Evans, and continues today through the Alumni Medal Awards. From its earliest recipients to this

year’s honoree, Rene’ Lawson, alongside six additional alumni and friends, the awards celebrate individuals whose leadership, service and character reflect the very best of Texas Wesleyan.

The university’s commitment to recognition expanded in 1976 with the establishment of the Athletic Hall of Fame, beginning with the induction of legendary golf coach O.D. Bounds.

Nearly five decades later, that legacy continues. In early 2025, Texas Wesleyan welcomed five new honorees into the Athletic Hall of Fame, underscoring the lasting impact of student-athletes, coaches and supporters who helped shape the university’s competitive and character-driven athletic tradition.

Community partnership has also played a central role in the university’s advancement story. The Business Hall of Fame, first established in 1970 with the recognition of J.M. and O.P. Leonard, founders of Leonard’s department stores, reflects Texas Wesleyan’s belief in the power of connection and commitment beyond campus. This fall, the university celebrated its 55th Business Hall of Fame by honoring Rusty Reid, chief executive officer of Higginbotham, recognizing his leadership and enduring support of education and community impact.

As Texas Wesleyan looks ahead to its next 135 years, the spirit of advancement remains inseparable from its mission.

“We are building on the extraordinary work of those who came before us,” Messer said. “Our future is bright because our community believes in what education makes possible.” Through continued partnership, shared vision and philanthropy, Texas Wesleyan will continue forging pathways for students to learn, grow and lead— on campus, across Fort Worth and throughout the world.

TXWES CAMPUS Generous philanthropic gifts and grants have shaped our campus from its earliest days to now.

The first major building on the campus provided both administration offices and classrooms, and after a significant gift for expansion, was later named for the first major benefactor of the college, Mrs. Ann Halsell Waggoner, wife of Texas cattleman Dan Waggoner.

In 2007, the university opened the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Science and Technology Center funded by a 2002 Department of Energy grant and other gifts, including from the Alcon Foundation.

The most recent addition to our campus, the Moritz Fieldhouse, features state-ofthe-art amenities for student-athletes and was made possible by a leadership-level gift from Moritz Dealerships.

The Karen Cramer Stadium is in the process of being built on the western edge of campus. The stadium will be home to football, soccer, cross country and track and field teams once completed.

Construction began when Karen Cramer pledged a gift for the construction of a new East Fort Worth stadium to serve not just TXWES, but the entire East Fort Worth community.

Texas Wesleyan University has evolved from a teacher’s college into a university offering one of the nation’s leading graduate programs in nurse anesthesia, along with critically acclaimed programs in business, psychology and education.

Today, TXWES continues to strengthen and expand its academic portfolio.

Focused on preparing students for their future and their purpose, TXWES is expanding opportunities across disciplines. Beginning this year, students may earn an associate degree; a Bachelor of Arts in humanities and artificial intelligence; a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry with a concentration in forensic science; and micro-certifications in marriage and family therapy foundations and school counseling foundations. In 2027, the university will launch a Master of Science in project management for the artificial intelligence economy.

Together, these programs position the university for its next era of academic expansion and innovation.

President Emily Messer says this momentum reflects the university’s forward-thinking approach to program development. “Texas Wesleyan has always responded to the needs of our community, state and beyond,” Messer said. “From our beginnings as a teacher-training college to becoming a national leader in graduate nursing education, our evolution reflects a commitment to providing high-quality programs that prepare students for high-demand careers. As we look to the next 135 years, TXWES will continue to lead in teacher preparation and retention with its newly formed Center for Educator Excellence, as well the next generation of healthcare Professionals.”

Academic innovation is also flourishing beyond healthcare. The

Texas Wesleyan Honors College has expanded significantly in recent years, attracting high-achieving students who seek small classes, faculty connections and mentorship, along with interdisciplinary learning experiences. Honors students engage in undergraduate research, leadership development and community-based projects that reflect the university’s core values of connection, compassion, commitment and courage.

“The Honors College represents the best of what Texas Wesleyan offers, which is a highly personalized, academically rich experience where students are encouraged to think critically, lead boldly and serve their communities,” said Dr. Stacia Dunn Campbell, director of the Honors College. “As we continue to grow, we are building a culture where curiosity and excellence go hand in hand.”

Board of Trustees Chair Glenn Lewis says the university’s academic transformation is a testament to its mission and its people.

“Texas Wesleyan has never stood still,” Lewis said. “Our faculty, staff and leadership have built programs that respond to real needs locally, nationally and globally. Whether through the expansion of The Honors College, the strength of GPNA, or expansion of healthcare offerings, TXWES continues to position students for long-term success.”

TXWES TRADITIONS ROBING AND HOODING: Seniors first received their academic robes from the hands of the faculty during the baccalaureate ceremony in 1927. It is a tradition that continues to this day with both undergraduate and graduate students receiving their academic regalia from a faculty-member they chose because of the meaningful relationship they established while a student.

HOMECOMING: Always an important part of any college experience, Homecoming at TXWES has been celebrated with parades, bonfires (these photos are from the 1940s), a homecoming court and, of course, football!

LIGHT UP TXWES: Traditions always have a start, and we started a new one in December 2023 with Light Up TXWES to embrace the approaching holiday with our RAMily.

BRICK DEDICATION: Donors are eligible to inscribe a brick in the Donor Walkway in front of the West Library on campus to memorialize or honor alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends.

RAILBLAZERS Texas Wesleyan Launches First Varsity Women’s Flag Footbaball Team in Texas Texas Wesleyan is blazing a new trail by launching the first varsity women’s flag football team in Texas — one touchdown at a time. Competition begins in spring 2026, marking the newest chapter in a long history of athletic innovation at the university.

For decades, TXWES has been on the cutting edge of emerging sports. The university was an early adopter of beach volleyball and expanded wrestling to include both men’s and women’s programs long before many institutions followed.

Today, Texas Wesleyan wrestlers are even tapped to train at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center during the summer, an honor that reflects the excellence, discipline and competitive spirit cultivated across TXWES Athletics.

The addition of women’s varsity flag football continues this forward-thinking momentum and reinforces the university’s commitment to ensuring every student can access a full collegiate experience within a small, close-knit environment.

“We’re making history,” Coach Keenah Lambert said. “These players have an opportunity that no one will ever have again to build a new team and a new program. That takes a lot of work, and we’re off to a good start.”

Lambert’s top priorities are building a culture of excellence and recruiting athletes who can shape the identity of the program. “I start with finding great leaders who set examples for the rest of the team,” she said.

One of those leaders is Captain Mikaela Nunez. “Mikaela is my captain. She is one of the first people I met, and she made a big impression on me,” Lambert said. “She’s tall and lean and muscular. But even more important than that is her character. She knows what she’s supposed to do, and she sets an example for the younger players.”

“I graduated with my first master’s in athletic training and now I’m earning my MBA in healthcare administration,” she said. “I keep up with everyone to be sure they’re doing what they need to do on and off the field.”

She has also witnessed firsthand the growing momentum behind the sport.

“I’m from Las Vegas, so I played flag football all four years in high school,” she said. “When I graduated in 2019, it wasn’t really a collegiate sport yet. I went to Midland University and played there all four years, when programs were just starting.”

Athletic Director Ricky Dotson said he is proud to see Texas Wesleyan leading the way as the first university in the state to elevate women’s flag football to varsity status.

“I see all of our athletic teams as representatives of the university, and for them to have success means the university has success,” Dotson said. “We wanted to be at the front end of flag football and be a model for other schools to follow.”

National interest is booming. According to the National Football League, participation in flag football among 6-to-12year-olds has grown by 38% since 2015, making it one of the fastest-growing youth sports. Flag football will also make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

As the Rams take the field, they carry forward Texas Wesleyan’s legacy as a trailblazer, expanding opportunities, elevating women’s athletics and ensuring every student can compete, grow and thrive.

Nunez, now pursuing her second master’s degree, says her academic and athletic experiences have prepared her to lead.

SEVENTY YEARS of STAGE MAGIC For seven decades, Texas Wesleyan University has been a driving force in shaping the cultural landscape of Fort Worth. What began as a small but ambitious theatre program has grown into a vibrant artistic powerhouse— one that produced the first musical performances in Fort Worth 70 years ago and continues to make the arts accessible to audiences across the city. As the university celebrates this milestone, it honors a legacy of innovation, community engagement and artistic excellence.

Theatre at Texas Wesleyan traces its roots to 1912, when The Winning Party graced the stage of Poly College.

But 1955 marked a transformative moment: the debut of the university’s first musical, "Finian’s Rainbow."

The production launched what would become a 70-year tradition of annual musicals, establishing Wesleyan as the first institution in Fort Worth to mount full-scale productions of this kind. Over the decades, these musicals have become a cultural touchstone, with packed seats drawing diverse audiences, enriching the community and giving students a platform that mirrors professional theatre. This spring will mark the 71st season with one of the most popular musicals of all time, "Little Shop of Horrors," April 23-26, 2026.

No figure has shaped this journey more profoundly than Professor Joe Brown, whose extraordinary 43 years of service has left an indelible mark on 22

the program’s evolution. As a professor, director, mentor and visionary, Brown has guided thousands of students with steady dedication and a deep love for the craft.

“Wesleyan theatre has always been about possibility,” Brown reflected.

“For 43 years, I’ve had the privilege of watching students discover who they are onstage and off. What we create here is more than a performance, it’s a community where storytelling, courage and creativity come alive.”

As the program evolved, so did its reach.

Graduates have gone on to become casting directors in Los Angeles and New York, film and special-events producers, Emmy winners and even a Tony Award recipient for the "Broadway revival of Porgy and Bess." Others have applied their performance and communication skills to fields such as business and education, broadening the program’s educational value.

Brown attributes this success to the collective commitment of the department. “Nothing of importance happens without a great team,” he said. “The focus for all of us is always our students, and that’s what produces the results.”

Alumni continue to shape the program’s future. Jacob Sanchez ’15, who now serves as marketing and recruitment manager and feature director, described how Wesleyan’s training continues to resonate in his professional life: “Texas

Wesleyan gave me the foundation I needed to pursue my dreams. Brown and the faculty taught us discipline, collaboration and heart, which are all qualities that guide me in how I work with every student. Today, I am honored to help continue the legacy of TXWES and Joe Brown.”

The physical home of Theatre Wesleyan has also evolved. Housed in the Law Sone Fine Arts Building, originally a 1947 church sanctuary, the program now benefits from deep connections with local organizations such as Casa Mañana, Stage West, Jubilee Theatre and Amphibian Stage Productions.

These partnerships strengthen its position as a cultural anchor in Tarrant County and offer students a direct pipeline to professional networks.

As Theatre Wesleyan celebrates 70 years of musical theatre and more than a century of theatrical storytelling, its next act is already taking shape. With the program’s eyes set on a modern fine arts center that unites theatre, music and art, the theatre family continues to foster new forms of collaboration to expand the arts across the university and the community. The evolution from the university’s early productions to its far-reaching alumni network demonstrates a legacy def ined by creativity, mentorship and the belief that the arts can transform lives.

STRATEGIC PLAN IGNITES THE FUTURE Every flame begins with a spark — and at Texas Wesleyan University, more than 1,400 sparks have ignited a bold new vision for the future.

These sparks came from students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners who shared their ideas, hopes and expectations throughout the strategic planning process. Through surveys, listening sessions, emails and conversations, their voices shaped a plan created by the Ram community and for the Ram community. President Emily Messer set the charge — then stepped back deliberately, empowering campus stakeholders to lead the work.

“As president, my role was to cast the vision and ensure our values guided the process,” Messer said. “But the true brilliance of this plan comes directly from our Ram community.

They defined the priorities, identified the opportunities and built this roadmap for the next 135 years of Wesleyan excellence.”

From these community voices, a new five-year strategic plan emerged; one that strengthens the student experience, advances the university’s mission and positions Texas Wesleyan as a forwardthinking leader in higher education. At the helm of leading this planning effort include Strategic Plan Co-Chairs Dr. Sameer Vaidya, Dean of the School of Business Administration, and Lauren Findley, Vice President for Enrollment

Management, supported by a 22-member Strategic Planning Committee.

According to Findley, collaboration has been at the heart of every decision.

“What makes this plan powerful isn’t just its goals, it’s the people who created it,” she said. “The process was intentionally inclusive. Every voice mattered and every idea was considered.

This is a plan grounded in shared purpose and built for collective action.”

The plan, named “Igniting Impact,” is organized around three bold priorities: Purposeful Growth

Driving economic and regional impact through strategic enrollment growth, optimized campus spaces and technology, diversified revenue streams and strengthened partnerships.

Transformative Learning

Developing a Signature Wesleyan Student Experience and evolving academic offerings through careerintegrated learning, experiential pathways and flexible, lifelong education.

Intentional Connection

Fostering a culture of courage, creativity, transparency and collaboration ensuring students, faculty and staff remain central to all decision-making.

To measure progress, the university will track key performance indicators (KPIs) in four areas: enrollment, financial sustainability, philanthropy

and targeted partnerships. The plan was presented to the Board of Trustees in November 2025 and received full support. The launch started in January 2026 along with goal-setting cycles to ensure ongoing accountability.

The impact of stakeholder-driven planning is already evident. New onboarding strategies have been developed and embedded that help new and existing staff build a deeper sense of belonging. Additionally, there’s the expansion and elevated spiritual life programming for students, which has already seen an increase in student participation. These are only two significant changes that Vaidya sees as early wins and fuel for the years ahead. “When people see their feedback turn into action, trust grows,” he said. “Momentum grows. That is how transformation takes hold with one idea, one spark at a time.”

For Messer, early progress is a clear sign that the community is ready to move boldly into the future. “This is more than a strategic plan. It is a shared promise,” she said. “Our RAMily has ignited something powerful. The next five years will be defined by their courage, their creativity and their commitment to shaping a Wesleyan experience worthy of every student we serve.”

The sparks are lit and the fire of transformation has started.

Ann Arnold, Ph.D., was married to Leonard for 57 years. Their family grew with the addition of two sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Dr. Arnold earned degrees from Texas Wesleyan and the University of North Texas. She was a FWISD teacher, counselor, and administrator prior to her retirement in 1990. Her interest in Fort Worth history led to the publication of four books, including the bestseller, Gamblers & Gangsters: Ft. Worth's Jacksboro Highway in the 1940s and 1950s. Together, Ann and Leonard endowed a scholarship at Texas Wesleyan.

Miriam served the University from 1978 to 2013, during which time she served as professor of English and as Dean of the School of Arts and Letters. She was deeply committed to her students and passionate about the mission of higher education. She will be remembered for her compassion, dedication, and a profound love for learning that touched the lives of many in our campus community.

Thad Smotherman, a successful entrepreneur, served on the Texas Wesleyan Board of Trustees and was a supporter of the university, particularly in the area of fine arts and theater.

Bridgette Griffin '69 February 7, 2025

Bridgette graduated in 1969 with a degree in Music Education. While at Wesleyan, she starred in several spring musicals and was active in Sigma Alpha Iota.

She met her husband David at Texas Wesleyan, and children Wes and Rachel are also graduates.

She had a 35-year career in public school teaching and a similar-length commitment to directing church choirs. For fifty years, she was an avid and gifted quilter, founding a prayer quilting group at University United Methodist Church.

In all of this—and in her cooking—she consistently shared unwavering love and acceptance toward all.

February 10, 2025 Ann Reed was a beloved mother, Nana, sister, and friend. One of her greatest passions in life was education - through travel, art, music, food, and great books. She was a 1982 graduate of Texas Wesleyan University and a grade school teacher for many years. In 2000, she joined the faculty at Texas Wesleyan University where she taught others how to become educators themselves.

Mike came to Texas Wesleyan to develop a Mass Communication program, and was a friend and mentor to many students. He graduated from the Texas Wesleyan Law School in 1997. He taught business law and ethics in addition to his ever-popular Mass Communication courses: Pop Culture and Mass Media in the Viet Nam War. Dr. Sewell retired in 2008.
