An old Indian chief sat in his hut on the reservation, smoking a ceremonial pipe and eyeing two Canadian government officials sent to interview him. “Chief Two Eagles,” asked one official, “You have observed the white man for 90 years. You’ve seen his material wealth. You’ve seen his progress. You’ve seen his wars.” ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc The chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, “Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?” The chief stared at the government officials for over a minute and then calmly replied, “When white man found the land, Indians were running it. No taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, women did all the work, medicine man free, Indian man spent all day hunting and fishing, all night with his wife.” The chief leaned back and smiled, ............... “Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.”

One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge of me. I was maybe 2 1/2 years old and had just recovered from an accident. Someone had given me a little ‘tea set’ as a get-well gift and it was one of my favorite toys. Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought Daddy a little cup of “tea,” which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home. My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was “just the cutest thing!” My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watched him drink it up. Then she says, (as only a mother would know . . ... ) “Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?”

HOW MY CELL PHONE ENDED UP IN THE REFRIGERATOR!!
By Ginger Lane
It was just a tiny mistake.. a momentary lapse in judgment… one I will never live down. Here’s the whole story. I drove a vehicle out to my son, Jesse’s house to sell for me. He really didn’t think it was a good idea for me to try to meet up with folks, so he volunteered. He lives about 5 hours from me and then the company that he works for had some equipment that needed to be brought back to Greenville, so they sent him and allowed me to ride in an 18 wheeler with him! It was a pretty easy ride but it was raining and cold almost all the way back and we even got to stop and have a nice meal. Of course, we ordered too much and then had to get a doggy bag. When we got back, he had to drop me off to get my vehicle to follow him to park the big truck overnight. I was tired and grabbing all my stuff to transfer it to my truck. The cold wind was blowing, there was the rain and it was late. I was trying to make one trip and grabbed everything as fast as I could. Immediately, when I walked in the house, I began getting everything settled in. Jess was going to stay overnight, then drive back out the next morning. I had to get his room readied, start a load of laundry, feed the cat.. you know the regular things you do including put your phones on the charger. Here’s where it started. I couldn’t find my cell phone. Since in the few minutes I had been home, I’d been in almost every room in the house, I looked everywhere. I had sat down in a chair, the cushions came out feeling as far down as I could. I took my purse and dumped the entire contents out. I went back out to my truck and looked under the seats, in between the seats, in the back seat. I looked on the ground. I dug in all my pockets. AND, THEN, I did it all over again! And, again! At some point, Jess jumped in to help with the search and he is looking in almost all the same places I looked and no phone. Continued on Page 6

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. “Careful,” he said. “CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my Goodness! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my GOD! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful . CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!” The wife stared at him. “What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?” The husband calmly replied, “I just wanted to show you how it feels when I’m driving the car.”

We finally gave up and he went to bed. But, me? I’m reliving every step I took trying to find the phone. Then, I remembered! While I had been at his house, and everyone was talking about aps and downloads, I had signed up for a free service called LOOKOUT. The service can find your phone and make it ‘scream’. I logged on and it immediately pinged me right at my home address. EUREKA! The phone is here. I press the ‘scream’ button and it gives you a written warning. “Are you sure you want to make it scream? It’s really loud. By this time, I’ve been looking for the phone for a couple of hours and yes, I want it to scream, I want it to jump up and down.. send up flares! Anything to put me out of my misery. The LOOKOUT program is telling me that it is connecting, but I can’t hear anything. I keep clicking the scream button.. running outside and into other rooms.. nothing. I fall asleep, still wondering what in the world I did with the phone, but with some peace knowing it is at least somewhere close by. Next morning… I wake Jess up with the news that the phone did make its way to Greenville, but I can’t press the scream button and be outside at the same time. I asked him to see if he can hear it. I log in and press the scream button as he is wandering through the house listening. He opened the door, walked to my truck, opened the truck door, back in the house, room by room. He goes into the kitchen and he says, “Shhhhh, I hear something.” He walks over and starts looking all around and on top of the refrigerator. Then, he opened the door and this blood curdling screaming is so loud, I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t come running. He can’t see it so he starts digging around and there it was, inside the doggy bag. As he picked it up and showed it to me, he had this ‘you have got to be kidding me’ look on his face. When I was trying to be efficient and get everything at one time out of the 18 wheeler, I had put the phone in there for safe keeping and I wouldn’t drop it. Great idea, right? Oh, well, we had a great laugh about it, at my expense. It was a funny thing I got to enjoy with my kid, so the humiliation is worth it! It’ll be one of those stories repeated down the generations… “Why, did you know that your great great grandmother once put her phone in the refrigerator?” and the young generations to follow will gasp, “What? Did they have store them in there way back then?” or see me as some feeble minded old lady that had to be kept under lock and key. LOOKOUT is a great free download and I highly recommend you get it on your phone right away. Here’s the web address, www.lookout.com. You never know when you might put your phone somewhere like the bathtub or in a tree, the refrigerator or…

December, 2014 AND AWAY WE GO! An elderly man on a Moped, looking about 90 years old, pulls up next to a Doctor at a street light. The old man looks over at the sleek shiny car and asks, “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?” The doctor replies, “A Ferrari GTO. It cost half a million dollars!” “That’s a lot of money,” says the old man. “Why does it cost so much?” “Because this car can do up to 220 miles an hour!” states the doctor proudly. The Moped driver asks, “Mind if I take a look inside?” “No problem,” replies the doctor. So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Then, sitting back on his Moped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car, all right.... But I’ll stick with my Moped!” Just then the light changes, so the doctor decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 150 mph. Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer ! He slows down to see what it could be and suddenly WHOOOOSSSHHH! Something whips by him going much faster! “What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?” the doctor asks himself. He presses harder on the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 180 mph. Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it’s the old man on the Moped! Amazed that the Moped could pass his Ferrari, he gives it more gas and passes the Moped at 200 mph and he’s feeling pretty good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man gaining on him AGAIN! Astounded by the speed of this old guy, he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 220 mph. Not ten seconds later, he sees the Moped bearing down on him again! The Ferrari is flat out, and there’s nothing he can do ! Suddenly, the Moped plows into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear end. The doctor stops and jumps out and unbelievably the old man is still alive. He runs up to the banged-up old guy and says, “I’m a doctor... Is there anything I can do for you ?” The old man whispers, “Unhook my suspenders from your side view mirror!”

The IRS decides to audit Jim, and summons him to the IRS office. The IRS auditor is not surprised when Jim shows up with his attorney. The auditor says, “Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, which you explain by saying that you win money gambling. I’m not sure the IRS finds that believable.” “I’m a great gambler, and I can prove it,” says Jim. “How about a demonstration?” The auditor thinks for a moment and said, “Okay. Go ahead.” Jim says, “I’ll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.” The auditor thinks a moment and says, “No way! It’s a bet.” Jim removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor’s jaw drops. Jim says, “Now, I’ll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye.” The auditor can tell Jim isn’t blind, so he takes the bet. Jim removes his dentures and bites his good eye. The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Jim’s attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous. “Want to go double or nothing?” Jim asks. “I’ll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and spit into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between.” The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there’s no way this guy can manage that stunt, so he agrees again. Jim stands beside the desk but although he strains mightily, he can’t make the spit reach the wastebasket on other side, so he pretty much gets it all over the desk. The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win. But Jim’s attorney moans and puts his head in his hands. “Are you okay?” the auditor asks. “Not really,” says the attorney. “This morning, when Jim told me he’d been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty thousand dollars that he could come in here and spit all over an IRS official’s desk and that you’d be happy about it.”

The happiest of people Don’t necessarily have the best of everything; They just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness lies for Those who cry, Those who hurt, Those who have searched, And those who have tried, For only they can appreciate the importance of people Who have touched their lives. When you were born, you were crying And everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, You’re the one who is smiling And everyone around you is crying.

December, 2014 We never get what we want, We never want what we get, We never have what we like, We never like what we have. And still we live & love. That’s life... The best kind of friends, Is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, Never say a word, And then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had. It’s true that we don’t know What we’ve got until it’s gone, But it’s also true that we don’t know What we’ve been missing until it arrives. Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they’ll love you back! Don’t expect love in return; Just wait for it to grow in their heart, But if it doesn’t, be content it grew in yours. It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, An hour to like someone, And a day to love someone, But it takes a lifetime to forget someone. . Don’t go for looks; they can deceive. Don’t go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, Because it takes only a smile to Make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile! May you have Enough happiness to make you sweet, Enough trials to make you strong, Enough sorrow to keep you human, And enough hope to make you happy Always put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, It probably hurts the other person, too.

ENCHANTED ROCK LEGENDS
Enchanted Rock, a granite dome in southwestern Llano County about twenty miles north of Fredericksburg, has long been the center of various legends. The local Comanche and Tonkawa Indians both feared and revered the rock, and were said to offer sacrifices at its base. One Indian tradition holds that a band of brave warriors, the last of their tribe, defended themselves on
the rock from the attacks of other Indians. The warriors, however, were finally overcome and killed, and since then Enchanted Rock has been haunted by their ghosts. Another legend tells of an Indian princess who threw herself off the rock when she saw her people slaughtered by enemy Indians; now her spirit is said to haunt Enchanted Rock. Yet another tale tells of the spirit of an Indian chief who was doomed to walk the summit forever as punishment for sacrificing his daughter; the indentations on the rock’s summit are his footprints. Finally, there is the story of a white woman who was kidnapped by Indians but escaped and lived on Enchanted Rock, where her screams were said to be audible at night. The Indian legends of the haunting of Enchanted Rock were probably bolstered by the way the rock glitters on clear nights after rain, and by the creaking noises reported on cool nights after warm days. Scientists have since theorized that the glittering is caused either by water trapped in indentations in the rock’s surface or by the moon reflecting off wet feldspar, and the creaking noises by contraction of the rock’s outer surface as it cools. A number of stories involve rumors of great mineral wealth to be found at Enchanted Rock. Spanish explorers believed it was one large chunk of silver or iron. They also sought legendary gold and silver mines nearby, and some early Texans believed that the lost “Bowie Mines” were in the vicinity west of Enchanted Rock. Some gold has in fact been mined near Enchanted Rock, but not enough to be commercially profitable. According
Texas Twister to an account written in 1834 the rock was once supposed to be of platinum. One of the most enduring and romantic stories involving Enchanted Rock is that of a young Spanish soldier, Don Jesús Navarro, and his rescue of the Indian maiden Rosa. Navarro supposedly came from Monterrey to San José y San Miguel de Aguayo Mission in San Antonio in 1750. At the mission he met and fell in love with Rosa, the Christian daughter of the Indian chief Tehuan. But Rosa was kidnapped by a band of Comanches bent on sacrificing her to the spirits of Enchanted Rock. Her daring lover followed them there and managed to rescue her as she was about to be burned at the stake. Another tale, given official credence when the state of Texas commemorated it with a plaque near the summit of Enchanted Rock in 1936, relates a heroic episode in the life of Capt. John Coffee Hays. Cut off by Comanche raiders from his company of Texas Rangersqv on a surveying trip in the fall of 1841, Hays took refuge on Enchanted Rock and singlehandedly held off the Indians in a three-hour battle that ended when the frustrated Indians fled, convinced even more firmly than before that Enchanted Rock was possessed by malevolent spirits.
