For the History Buffs In George Washington’s days, there were no cameras. One’s image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are ‘limbs,’ therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, ‘Okay, but it’ll cost you an arm and a leg.’ (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint) ******* As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn’t wash t he wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term ‘big wig.’ Today we often use the term ‘here comes the Big Wig’ because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy. ******* In the late 1700’s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The ‘head of the household’ always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the ‘chair man.’ Today in business, we use the expression or title ‘Chairman’ or ‘Chairman of the Board.’ ******* Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee’s wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman’s face she was told, ‘mind your own bee’s wax.’ Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term ‘crack a smile’. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . . . Therefore, the expression ‘losing face.’ ******* Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in ‘straight laced’. . Wore a tightly tied lace. ******* Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the ‘Ace of Spades.’ To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren’t ‘playing with a full deck.’ ******* Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV’s or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to ‘go sip some ale’ and listen to people’s conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. ‘You go sip here’ and ‘You go sip there.’ The two words ‘go sip’ were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term ‘gossip.’ ******* At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid’s job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming.. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in ‘pints’ and who was drinking in ‘quarts,’ hence the term ‘minding your’P’s and Q’s ‘ ******* One more and betting you didn’t know this! In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near
the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem... how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a ‘Monkey’ with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make ‘Brass Monkeys.’ Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, ‘Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.’ (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn’t you.)

SENIORS A senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80 m.p.h., enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. “Amazing,” he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a state trooper behind him, lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, “What am I doing? I’m too old for this,” and pulled over to await the trooper’s arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch, and said, “Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding that I’ve never heard before, I’ll let you go.” The old gentleman paused. Then said, “Years ago, my wife ran off with a state trooper. I thought you were bringing her back.” “Have a good day, sir,” replied the trooper. *************************************************************** An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100% The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, ‘Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.’ The gentleman replied, ‘Oh, I haven’t told my family yet..I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!’.

THE BAPTIST & THE COWBOY A Baptist Preacher was seated next to a cowboy on a flight to Texas After the plane took off, the cowboy asked for a whiskey and soda, which was brought and placed before him. The flight attendant then asked the preacher if he would like a drink. Appalled, the preacher replied, ‘I’d rather be tied up and taken advantage of by women of ill-repute, than let liquor touch my lips.’ The cowboy then handed his drink back to the attendant and said, ‘Me too, I didn’t know we had a choice..’

Faith is a Lifestyle
By Pastors Dean & Ruth Remmers FaithisaLifestyle@yahoo.com
The Chief of Police pulled up just as we were getting out at my dad’s home in rural Central Texas. “Your brother called and said there was going to be a ruckus, so I wanted a front row seat.” We all laughed and got reacquainted as we discussed the situation. A young man had threatened to hit my dad, so I had come to town to “fix it.” (Of course, I took along my husband and two sons as backup.) On the way, I realized that I had the wrong attitude, and I sure didn’t want to be like Balaam in the Bible who went even though God specifically told him not to go (Numbers 22:12). As I prayed, I sensed on the inside of me that God was sending us, but not for that purpose. So when we arrived and found out the Chief was going to handle the young man, I knew God was working. As the morning unfolded, more of His purpose became apparent to me. I was allowed to talk about the LORD with the people involved in two of the Chief’s domestic cases. Praise God! In one case a man was trying to throw a woman out of their home. We talked with them about the LORD but didn’t seem to make any progress. Neither one indicated that they would even think about what I was saying. But I had inside information (Isaiah 55:10-11)! The Word of God that I had spoken to this couple could not return void, empty, or useless. My words to them were effective because I had put God’s Word in my heart and in my mouth—and it didn’t depend on whether or not I saw any results or felt any different. “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6). My faith is not in circumstances or people’s whims. I trust

God and I believe the Book He gave us is true; therefore, the words (seeds) that we spoke (planted) will take root in their heart. God will send other laborers to them (Luke 10:2), and they will give their hearts to the LORD (the harvest). The other police case concerned a young woman who owed her grandfather $400 for a vehicle she had stopped making payments on. He had repossessed it, and she was livid! That was her only means of transportation. She demanded that he give her back her money or the car. He refused, of course, so there was a deadlock. When their argument heated to the point of boiling over, the Chief asked her to step outside. He began talking to the man, so I quickly went out to calm her down. When I caught up to her, she asked me to “excuse her French,” and then proceeded to limit most of her speech to four-letter words. Thank God for His grace and loving kindness or I could have walked off right then and there. Instead, I put my arm around her and let her cry out her frustration. Everything seemed to be going wrong for her, and now this—$1100 down the drain. The LORD gave me the words to negotiate a deal between the two of them, but it all hinged on the woman’s boss giving her a $200 advance that day. That wasn’t going to happen, the woman said, because she had already asked him for it, but he just didn’t have it. Then God stepped in and made up the difference. We visited her boss, and he remembered when my husband and I lived in the area and would come eat at his restaurant and talk to him. He said, “Just a minute” and went behind the register. In a few moments time, he handed the woman a check for $200—signed, sealed, and delivered! The woman took the money back to her grandfather, and they wept as they embraced and made amends. A “no” turned into a “yes” in a few moments because God sent us to

those people to show Himself strong in their behalf. Are you ready for God to use you in similar ways? Live ready and He will. Repeat these basic essentials over and over to God’s people. Warn them before God against pious nitpicking, which chips away at the faith. It just wears everyone out. Concentrate on doing your best for God, work you won’t be ashamed of, laying out the truth plain and simple. II Timothy 2:14-15, Message Bible

It was a celebratory mood with the boys at NASA; they had just made the scientific achievement of a lifetime. As they were uncorking a bottle of champagne, Dr. Lowenstein, the head scientist at NASA, asked everyone to be quiet as he had received a congratulatory phone call from the President of the United States. He picked up a special red phone, and spoke into it. “Mr. President,” said Dr. Lowenstein, grinning broadly, “after twelve years of hard research and billions of dollars spent, we have finally found intelligent life on Mars.” He listened for a second, and his smile gradually disappeared, replaced by a frown. He said, “But that’s impossible . . . we could never do it. . . yes Mr. President,” and hung up the phone. He addressed the crowd of scientists staring at him curiously. “I have some bad news,” he said, “the President said that now that we’ve found intelligent life on Mars... he wants us to try to find it in Congress.” ******************************************************** 70-year-old George went for his annual physical. He told the doctor that he felt fine, but often had to go to the bathroom during the night. Then he said, “But you know Doc, I’m blessed. God knows my eyesight is going, so he puts on the light when I pee, and turns it off when I’m done!” A little later in the day, Dr. Smith called George’s wife and said, “Your husband’s test results were fine, but he said something strange that has been bugging me. He claims that God turns the light on and off for him when uses the bathroom at night.” Thelma exclaimed, “That old fool! He’s been peeing in the refrigerator again! ******************************************************** Suffering from a bad case of the flu, the outraged patient bellowed, “Three weeks??? The doctor can’t see me for three weeks??? I could well be dead by then!” Calmly the voice at the other end of the line replied, “If so, would you please have your wife call to cancel the appointment?”

September, 2009 Listen To Your Instincts Animal medicine has its limitations. Just like doctors, vets are limited by the capabilities of their diagnostic tests and equipment. Vets also have the limitation that their patients can’t communicate how they feel. Sometimes it’s hard to determine if there is anything wrong with a pet and if so what. Just like with our children, the best route to a good diagnosis is an attentive care giver. When you take your pet to the vet it is scared and therefore does not show a true picture of what’s going on. At home while you observe your pets normal routine you might pick up that something just isn’t right. This is important, because early detection saves lives. It is important to know your pet’s habits, so when things aren’t going right you can share that information with your vet. You should have a file with your pet’s medical information inside encase of an emergency. When you are stressed out it is hard to remember the last time your pet was vaccinated and for what. The key to a happy pet is a healthy pet, so visit your vet at least once a year for a complete physical. These visits will make sick calls less stressful for your pet, because your pet will already know the clinic and its staff. Remember to spay or neuter your pets. This will reduce the number of unwanted pets in our local shelters. We have many pets looking for a great home, so visit our web site at www.commercehumane.com and see our pets. You can visit any pet by scheduling an appointment – call 903/496-2412 or email commercepets@yahoo.com. We are continuing Cat Extravaganza until the end of August. For $25.00 you can adopt a cat that has already been altered, vaccinated, leukemia tested, micro-chipped, and has 30-days insurance. That’s quite a deal. This is our effort to keep the local municipal shelters from having to euthanize cats and helping the community be offering wonderful pets at a reduced rate. You can see our cats 24/7 at PetSense in Greenville or call the shelter for an appointment. This week-end we will be at PetSense in Sulphur Springs for mobile adoption, but our cats will still be here in Greenville. THERE ARE HEROES AMONG US!
by Ginger Lane
This is dedicated to the fine job done by the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department. Misty Hensley, my office administrator, got a call from her house saying a white pickup had just driven away with their 16 ft trailer. We weren’t sure if her husband had loaned it to someone, or it had been stolen. It was early in the morning, broad daylight! But we weren’t taking any chances. She doesn’t live far from my office, so she jumped in one vehicle, and I in another. The chase was on! She was ahead of me, but we both did a quick turn around as we spotted the culprits speeding towards us with the trailer. They really sped up when they saw that we were after them. I was driving 70 on a curvy FM road, and Misty was ‘trying’ to drive faster, but I was in her way.
Hunt County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Dewey
She’s younger, more daring, and it was her trailer. So with me in the lead.......... we lost them. At the end of that road was a dead end. I went left, she went right. I knew she was calling 911, and her husband, but I really didn’t know that when a call like that goes into 911 that it was dispatched to all law enforcement. So, as I was driving towards Quinlan, I called the local police department there. I also saw a Quinlan police car going the opposite direction. When I got them on the line, the officer in the car was the one I was talking to! He asked me what I was driving and where I was. (I couldn’t imagine what difference that could make.) I was so frantic, I could barely remember what kind of car I had, but once I told him, I understood. He said he gotten the call and was watching for the truck and stolen trailer, and knew they were not between where I was and Quinlan because he saw my car! GREAT JOB 911 DISPATCH!! GREAT JOB QUINLAN POLICE DEPARTMENT! Misty was driving around the side roads by now, and I turned around to do the same. And, all I could think about was.......what was I going to do if I found them? Or, if Misty found them, would she be safe? The sheriff’s department was in contact with Misty, on and off, the entire time. Then, she called me and said that they told her they ‘had eyes on them”. GREAT JOB HUNT COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT! It had been about 30 minutes from the time the trailer had been stolen, and the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department was now following the thieves! Just a few minutes later, they contacted her again and asked her to come and identify her trailer! THEY HAD THEM! THE CRIMINALS WERE BUSTED! YAHOO!! THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE WAS SO AWESOME! (Except the part where it started and the trailer was stolen. That part wasn’t very good.)
Texas Twister Misty met up with me and we drove over together to identify the trailer. Now, this trailer means a lot to Misty and her husband, Steve. It provides a source of income to their family, and there was a lot of equipment they needed to be able to do their job on the trailer when it was stolen. So, when Steve heard the trailer was gone, he hit the ground on his knees to ask God for help getting it back. Misty and I were both praying, so the sheriff’s department did have some help. There were several officers on the scene. Deputies Baret Sanders and Chris Dewey were the officers that made the arrest. GREAT JOB, GUYS!!
Left to Right: Deputy Baret Sanders and Sgt. Hunter Landry Steve and Misty Hensley Misty and Steve are great Christians, and when we got there, she wanted to witness to the 2 grown men that stole their trailer. She asked Dept. Baret Sanders if she could ask them if they knew God. His response was, “Better not right now, they just met the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department!”

Royse City ISD’s Creative Convocation Gets Staff Ready for a Great Start!
GOLDEN DEBS
The Royse City High School Golden Debs recently returned from a MA Dance & Auxiliaries summer camp….. The camp was held at the Marriott DFW Resort & Golf Club in Ft. Worth and had over 300 participants. As host to thousands of students each year, Marching Auxiliaries awards organizations and individual participants at its camps around the nation. Founded in 1976, MA has been conducting summer workshops for 31 years, and is one of the largest privately held dance and auxiliary companies in the world. The Golden Debs represented RCHS with energy and excitement and the girls began unifying as a new squad of 25. They rose early and practiced late each day and their efforts did not go unnoticed. This genesis squad of girls brought home two team awards and eighteen individual awards by the end of dance camp. All four officers, Dani Sanders-Captain, Myranda Alonzo-1st Lieutenant, Jennifer Lehfeldt-2nd Lieutenant, and Britney Mayes-3rd Lieutenant, received an All Star Performer award, given out for attention and enthusiasm throughout camp sessions and demonstrating mastery of skill. Golden Debs newcomer, Rhiannon Gibson, also received this top individual award. The Rising Star award is given to camp participants who are “up and coming”, displays effort and showmanship while working towards mastery of skill. The following girls received this complimentary recognition: Rhiannon Gibson, Lauren Smoot, Carley Tanner, Cassandra Sanchez, Cristin Finney, Catherine Finney, Jennifer Lehfeldt, Taylyn Fischer, and Shelby Shields. The MA Honor Roll Medal winners, awarded to the best of the All Star awards and invited to perform at the Capital One Bowl Halftime show in Orlando, went to the talented Debs officers, Dani, Myranda, Jennifer, and Britney. As a team, RCHS Golden Debs earned a Spirit Stick award for enthusiasm, spirit, and a great attitude. For their Grand Championship performance, the Debs received a Superior award, demonstrating a routine with superior precision, technique, showmanship, and memory. Ms. Michelle Culp and Ms. Chandra Caffee are honored to be leading these 25 outstanding ladies into the 2009 – 2010 Class 4A performance year. Congratulations Golden Debs on your accomplishments both individually and as a team. Good luck as you begin your season!
Royse City ISD teachers and staff were entertained and inspired at the district convocation on Tuesday. Superintendent, Randy Hancock, welcomed employees back to school and commenced the day with a ventriloquist act entitled “Finance for Dummies” (Photo Right). With Hancock as ventriloquist and Chief Financial Officer, Jimmy Butler, playing the role of the puppet, the two cracked jokes yet also gave staff a brief financial update of district finances and staff salaries. It was like watching a “Best Of” show from Carol Burnett, as Mr. Hancock struggled and lost to keep a straight face as the clown-faced Butler spontaneously quipped out lines that left the staff in stitches. District employees were again entertained with a commercial break to kick-off the Payroll Deduction Campaign for the Royse City ISD Education Foundation. A parody on the Geico money eyes, Vernon Principal, Paula Walker and Jimmy Butler starred in the production touting the message…“That’s the money you could be giving to the Royse City ISD Education Foundation!” This first year of fundraising for the foundation gives supporters the opportunity to become Founding Donors, an honor that will only be available this first year. Those who pledge to give $250 or above will be listed as a Founding Donor, a designation that will always be a part of our foundation – in its publications, the web site and a monument also to be dedicated in recognition of the donors. No matter what level of giving you choose, please know the foundation appreciates any and all support and enthusiastically looks forward to funding the innovative grants our staff members bring. Also included in the day’s activity were the funny and moving messages brought to our staff by Angie Homan, District Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Chandra Caffee, District Secondary Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Homan entertained with classroom stories demonstrating all the different hats an elementary teacher must wear during a school day. And, she even sang a song! Homan concluded with, “So, at the end of the day we are exhausted. Yet, no matter how many people tell us or how often the state tries to make our job about numbers, you and I know that it is about children who will grow up and one day impact our communities, our country, and our world. And WE get to play a small part in that…and that is why we do what we do. I hope you have a great year – my hat is off to you!” Ms. Caffee spoke eloquently about how our actions and words imprint memories upon our students and fellow staff. “Every second that we come into contact with a child–kindergarten up to seniors— we leave an imprint on that student…the bus ride to school, walking into the front door, the front office, the cafeteria, the classroom. Each person with whom a child comes into contact leaves some impression with that child! From your voice, your vibe, the smells, the colors, the posters or pictures, the words on the wall, OR a lack of anything in the room… you are imprinting each student. So I leave you with this question to ponder – What imprint are you leaving?”

My Answered Prayer by Leslie Patton Four years ago, my sister and her husband moved to Austin, about 5 hours from where I live. I don’t have much family on my side, just an uncle and my grandfather and sister. My mother lives in Alaska, and my grandmother and great grandmother have passed away. My sister and I have always been very close, we are 16 mos. apart in age, and I had a huge part in helping raise her when we were little. I took my position of being “The Big Sister” VERY seriously. We were best friends, we shared lockers in school, we ate lunch together, we walked to classes together, we sat with each other while we used the bathroom, and at nights while laying in bed, we would talk about our dreams of raising our children together one day. Things changed when my mom moved to Alaska and Chris, my sisters husband’s mom died. He was alone, and needed his family and by the grace of God, he found his dad and established a much needed relationship with him in Austin. For four years my sister and I have texted every day. At least 10 times a day. We never have time to talk on the phone because of the demands of children, family and work. We get to see each other every other month or so for less than two days. I get to spend just enough time with her to really miss her like crazy. I miss that different relationship that you have with a person when you actually get to be in their presence, help take care of their kids, go out to eat together, go shopping, lean on each other, share your lives and events together.. Back in October 08, at a ladies retreat that I went to with my church. I started praying very hard for my sister to relocate and move back closer. This time I was praying with expectancy and faith and a lot more then I had ever had before. After all, why wouldn’t God bless me with this? Psalms 37:4 says, Delight yourself in the LORD and he shall give you the desires of your heart. I truly believe that it was meant for my sister and I to have that closeness with each other. A couple of weeks ago, my sister and her husband announced they would be moving back to East Texas. I am so excited. I just can’t hardly stand myself!!! It’s so awesome because this was one of those times, and there have been very few, where I actually gave this whole thing to God and stepped aside, kept my mouth shut, and let him do his work. I realize that while I was praying, God was aligning things in the right order to answer my prayers. It took forever it seemed like, but I didn’t push it. I never tried to convince Chris to move back and neither did my sister. We just let God do his thing, and he came through for us. I believe that God will give us the desires of our hearts, if we just believe and ask him. He made us to desire relationships, and yearn for that closeness with him, and with others. Thank you God for answering my prayers! Want to share an answered prayer? Write misty@texastwister.us.

One day last week we had the Publisher of the Texas Twister and the Advertising Editor both for lunch. That was a great treat. I had cooked our last squash of the season and had added a little extra. They both liked it and said I should put the recipe in the paper. So I had better put it in the paper! Hope you have a little squash left and will try it.
Squash, Bacon & Cheese 6 to 8 Yellow Squash 1 lg Onion (chopped) 2 t. Oleo 6 Slices of Bacon Salt & Pepper to taste Cheese (grated) I use Velveeta Fry bacon until crispy and set aside. Wash and slice squash into a microwaveable dish. Add chopped onion. Add salt & pepper. Put two pats of oleo on top. Cover and microwave on high for 12 to 15 minutes. Stir after 6 minutes. You may need to cook less time or more time, according to size of squash. Remove from microwave and let set for about 10 minutes. Crumble bacon and stir into squash mixture. Generously sprinkle cheese to cover top of the squash and cover again. The heat from the squash melts the cheese. You could microwave and melt cheese if you need to serve immediately. Enjoy! This recipe came from the Brookshire’s monthly Celebrate Cooking Book. You can pick one up at the store for free. If you have someone going off to college or maybe a newlywed this would be a quick and easy recipe to share for a good meal.
Chicken Crescent Roll 1 pkg. Tyson Grilled Chicken Breast Strips 1 (8 oz,) can Crescent rolls 1 C. Shredded Cheddar Cheese \ Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Separate the roll of dough into 8 triangles. Divide chicken strips among triangles, placing at the bottom of the short edge of the triangle. Sprinkle cheese over strips; roll up dough to enclose meat and cheese. Bake rolls 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy!!

Henry took his fishing very seriously. One day his young son, David, burst into the house, crying. His mother asked him what the problem was. “Daddy and I were fishing, and he hooked a giant fish. Really big. Then, while he was reeling it in, the line busted and the fish got away.” “Now come on, David,” his mother said, “a big boy like you shouldn’t be crying about an accident like that. You should have just laughed it off.” “But that’s just what I did, mommy.” ********************************************************************** The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After their tent is all set up, they fell sound asleep. One hour later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, “Kemo-Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?” The Lone Ranger replies, “I see millions of stars.” “What that tell you?” asked Tonto.

The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute, then says, “Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially millions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, it’s evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What’s it tell you, Tonto?” Tonto is silent for a moment, then says, “Kemo-Sabe, you real dummy. Someone stole tent.”

By Ginger Lane Family Traditions (or Monkey See, Monkey Do) I was thinking of traditions and how they are handed down generation to generation. One of the first things that comes to mind is that when I was a child, my mother and father always ‘crunched’ their cereal flakes. So, I crunched mine. When I was about 27 years old, a friend asked me, “Why do you crunch your cereal?” It was pretty embarrassing that my answer was that I had no clue. That same day I was talking to my parents. “Why do I crunch my cereal?” I just knew the answer was going to be something like it made it taste better. When they told me it was to get more cereal in the bowl, I couldn’t believe it. My whole life I had been crunching my cereal simply because my parents did, and I didn’t even consider the answer until I was 27 years old! And, I found the following written by Dorothy Law Nolte in 1954. Remember when the kids are around, they are watching! If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. If children live with praise, they learn appreciation. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal. If children live with sharing, they learn generosity. If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect. If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves. If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live. © 1982 Dorothy Law Nolte

The math teacher saw that little Johnny wasn’t paying attention in class. She called on him and said, “Johnny! What are 4, 2, 28 and 44?” Little Johnny quickly replied, “NBC, CBS, HBO and the Cartoon Network!” ****************************** A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to “honor thy father and thy mother,” she asked “Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?” Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, “Thou shall not kill!” ****************************** I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me, and always she was correct. But it was fun for me, so I continued. At last she headed for the door, saying sagely, “Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these yourself!” Solution on Page 28

888-355-5263 LET’S ROLL! 73 MINUTES THAT CHANGED OUR LIVES FOREVER It’s hard to believe that a little over an hour, a flash in time, can cut so deep in our American hearts. But, here it is, step by step. Early in the morning on September 11, 2001, nineteen hijackers took control of four commercial airliners en route to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Boston, Newark, and Washington, D.C. (Washington Dulles International Airport). At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 was crashed into the World Trade Center’s North Tower, followed by United Airlines Flight 175 which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m. Another group of hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. A fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, whose ultimate target was thought to be either the United States Capitol or White House, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m, after the passengers on board engaged in a fight with the hijackers. During the hijacking of the airplanes, the hijackers used weapons to stab and/or kill aircraft pilots, flight attendants and passengers. Reports from phone callers
September, 2009 from the planes indicated that knives were used by the hijackers to stab attendants and in at least one case, a passenger, during two of the hijackings. Some passengers were able to make phone calls using the cabin airphone service and mobile phones, and provide details, including that several hijackers were aboard each plane, that mace or other form of noxious chemical spray, such as tear gas or pepper spray was used, and that some people aboard had been stabbed. The 9/11 Commission established that two of the hijackers had recently purchased Leatherman multi-function hand tools. A flight attendant on Flight 11, a passenger on Flight 175, and passengers on Flight 93 mentioned that the hijackers had bombs, but one of the passengers also mentioned he thought the bombs were fake. No traces of explosives were found at the crash sites, and the 9/11 Commission believed the bombs were probably fake. On United Airlines Flight 93, black box recordings revealed that crew and passengers attempted to seize control of the plane from the hijackers after learning through phone calls that similarly hijacked planes had been crashed into buildings that morning. According to the transcript of Flight 93’s recorder, one of the hijackers gave the order to roll the plane once it became evident that they would lose control of the plane to the passengers.[21] Soon afterward, the aircraft crashed into a field near Shanksville in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, at 10:03:11 a.m. local time (14:03:11 UTC). Khalid Sheikh
Page 27
Mohammed, organizer of the attacks, mentioned in a 2002 interview with Yosri Fouda, an al Jazeera journalist, that Flight 93’s target was the United States Capitol, which was given the code name “the Faculty of Law”. Three buildings in the World Trade Center Complex collapsed due to structural failure on the day of the attack. The south tower (2 WTC) fell at approximately 9:59 a.m., after burning for 56 minutes in a fire caused by the impact of United Airlines Flight 175. The north tower (1 WTC) collapsed at 10:28 a.m., after burning for approximately 102 minutes. When the north tower collapsed, debris heavily damaged the nearby 7 World Trade Center (7 WTC) building. Its structural integrity was further compromised by fires, and the building collapsed later in the day at 5:20 p.m. The attacks created widespread confusion among news organizations and air traffic controllers across the United States. All international civilian air traffic was banned from landing on US soil for three days. Aircraft already in flight were either turned back or redirected to airports in Canada or Mexico. News sources aired unconfirmed and often contradictory reports throughout the day. One of the most prevalent of these reported that a car bomb had been detonated at the U.S. State Department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. All information from Wikipedia.com.

I was going to write about the ‘M’ word for cars. It’s almost a dirty word for those of us who can’t do it ourselves or those of you who don’t want to. MAINTENANCE! Besides not driving recklessly, it is the most important part of automobile ownership. And, since it has been a while, here is an article we published in our first edition written by Jesse Lane. The original question was from a C. Smith in Greenville. Q. I have been bugging my husband to change the oil in our car by himself to save money,
September, 2009
to which he replies, “It doesn’t save money.” I want to know once and for all. Isn’t it much cheaper to change your own oil? Yes or no? Sorry, Cynthia, but its actually yes AND no. I called around to some local shops and the AVERAGE PRICE for a complete oil change was $27.38, which includes up to 5 quarts of good quality oil, and a quality filter. They top off all of the fluids of the vehicle, including that precious windshield washer fluid. They do a multipoint inspection for any serious issues that might be coming up with the vehicle that you would otherwise be unaware of. Taking your vehicle to a reputable shop also insures that if something goes wrong with the process (yes, it happens) the shop is liable, instead of it coming out of your pocket. It is important to remember that proper main-
Page 31
tenance of your vehicle is the only way to keep it running reliable, the way it should. Unless your husband is very skilled in looking for signs that preventive maintenance is required, it is wise to let the professionals do it for him. Not to mention that a shop will give you a printout of your oil change with reminders of the next due date and areas that will need attention in the future. A good maintenance log is a great weapon in your arsenal against a service writer that doesn’t want to fix your car under warranty because of ‘ neglect’. Proving you have taken care of your car is harder when you do the work yourself. Then, come the tools. If you do decide to do the work yourself, you will need a good set of ramps, a set of wrenches, an oil filter wrench, a drain pan which you will have to carry (after the deed) in your car to an approved waste recovery site once you are done...(OOPS, it spilled add anther 10 bucks for cleaning the carpet!) and a bunch of rags, because it will get messy. If you buy the same quality oil and filter as a good shop, you’re going to save roughly $10 (once the price of your tools you had to buy has been cancelled out) But spending the $10 extra today can save you much more in the future. So, Cynthia, as long as you’re driving under normal condition (close to 3,000 miles every 3 months), I would just let him continue to take it to the pros. You will thank me each time there is NOT a greasy mess in your sink for you to clean up!
