How Bad Is The Economy? The economy is so bad that I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail. The economy is so bad I ordered a burger at McDonalds and the kid behind the counter asked, “Can you afford fries with that?” The economy is so bad that CEO’s are now playing miniature golf. The economy is so bad if the bank returns your check marked “Insufficient Funds,” you call them and ask if they meant you or them. The economy is so bad Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM. The economy is so bad McDonalds is selling the 1/4 ouncer. The economy is so bad parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children’s names. The economy is so bad a truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico . The economy is so bad Motel Six won’t leave the light on anymore. The economy is so bad Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen

DUI - TEXAS STYLE Only a person in Texas could think of this. From the county where drunk driving is considered a sport, comes this true story. Recently a routine police patrol parked outside a bar in Austin , Texas after last call the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so apparently intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off--it was a fine, dry summer night--, flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons’ vehicles left. At last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road. The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and administered a Breathalyzer test. To his amazement, the Breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the officer said, I’ll have to ask you to accompany me to the police station. This Breathalyzer equipment must be broken.’ ‘I doubt it,’ said the truly proud Redneck. ‘Tonight I’m the designated decoy.’

When An Angel Knocks On Your Door...You Open It! If you want to talk about all the terrible things going on in the world today, if you want to talk about how this country no longer has patriotism, if you to talk about how no one cares about their neighbors anymore, and if you want to talk about how the next generation is going got destroy the world, or if you want to talk about people not believing in God, I just have one thing to say. You’ll have to take to someone other than myself! On Christmas morning, 2007, an Angel came to visit my home. I won’t go into all the details, but it was a beautiful baby girl, and her name was really Angel. Her young Mom and Dad had fallen on hard times, and they were looking for food and shelter for their child. They were in Greenville looking for CPS to give the daughter they loved to the agency because they had no food, no gas, and no home. They had been turned away by the family they had come to visit for the holidays, and with no other options, they had given up hope and were doing what they thought best for their child. On their way to find the police department in Greenville, they stopped at the only place that seemed to be open. The person they spoke with tried to find help for them. They had a Texas Twister, and dialed my number thinking we could put them in touch with someone who could help with food and shelter. I began to call different agencies, but also found no one to answer on Christmas. Then, my son, Jesse, made a suggestion. We had plenty of room, why didn’t we take them in? I wanted to jump at the suggestion and say “Sure!”, but the thought of taking in strangers was a bit scary to me. We talked further. We talked about it being Christmas, and we didn’t have a whole lot, but definitely enough. We called the business back and gave directions for the family to make their way to our home. The first person gave them enough gas to fill their tank. When they arrived, I met the sweetest young couple, and their baby, Angel! Misty, my office manager, lived pretty close and she was my first call. She got on the phone, and things really started happening. We found at the mere mention of the family needing help, people went into action. Complete strangers to the young family began gathering money, food, and clothing. It was a miracle in the works! In less than 2 days, they had long term housing, a couple of job offers, and several new friends! In less than 2 days from the time they thought they were going to lose their baby, that they were homeless, and without hope, they were on track for better days! I have always been known as overly optimistic. My cup isn’t half full, it’s overflowing....even when it’s not. And, at times, that optimism has gotten me in a bit of a jam. I like looking at the good side of things. I have been warned about not seeing the negative, but now I am convinced ......The good outweighs the bad! The guys in the white hat always win! Prayer works! And, one thing for sure! When an Angel knocks at your door, you open it!

With tax season coming up pretty fast, now is the time to donate those unused items and extra cash. There are local organizations that do so much for our communities and they need your help. Anything from clothing, bicycles, real estate or cold hard cash can get the amount you owe to the internal revenue decreased. Check with your tax preparer on specific items, how it will affect your bottom line, and the deadline for making contributions. But, above all, remember this is the season for giving.

Visiting Kindergarten Little Tommy’s kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station. There they saw pictures tacked to a big bulletin board. The label clearly read, “The 10 Most Wanted.” One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. “Yes,” said the policeman, “the detectives want him very badly.” So Little Tommy asked, while tugging on the man’s belt, “Um, mister, why didn’t you keep them when you took their pictures?”

The following was found in the Bible of my cousin after she passed away. The author and/or origin is unknown. S.E. Farmer Little Boy Daddy had a little boy, His soul was white as snow; He never went to Sunday School ‘cause Daddy wouldn’t go. He never heard the Word of God That thrills the open mind While other children went to class, This child was left behind. As he grew from babe to youth, Dad saw to his dismay, A soul that once was snowy white Became a dingy gray. Dad even started back to church And Bible Study, too; He begged the Pastor, “Isn’t there A thing that you can do?” The preacher tried and tried, and said, “We’re just too far behind; I tried to tell you years ago, But you would pay no mind.” And so another soul was lost, That once ws white as snow; Sunday School would have surely helped, But Daddy wouldn’t go. Dad, Set the example!

A new pastor was visiting the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a card and wrote “Rev-

Flying High
Dealership sponsors “official” flag of GHS Courtesy of a Greenville High School student and local auto dealership, the pride of Greenville High School is flying high these days. The Southwest Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership, located in Greenville on the Interstate 30 East service road, recently sponsored a contest among high school art students to design the official flag of GHS. The dealership sponsored
Chance Donaghe, General Manager of the local dealership, said he sponsored the contest as a way to support local students and to display pride in the school district. “I went to high school at a school very similar to Greenville High School. On Friday - game day - all the local businesses and people in the town proudly displayed the school flag,” said Donaghe. “I think at one time it was started as a football game tradition, but I remember it growing and being just a symbol for the school in whatever we were doing.” For her efforts, Arellano earned a $500 scholarship to the school of her choice. That and the pride of seeing her work every time she travels I-30. “Shortly after I arrived in Greenville I had the pleasure of meeting (Superintendent) Don Jefferies and I asked him if I could have a school flag to display. That’s where the idea started,” said Donaghe.

I know that no one who knows me will ever look at me quite the same after I tell this story, but here it goes. It had been raining for several days about 17 years ago. PK Harris, a co-worker at the time, and I were on our way to Wylie. We headed down 66 from Greenville through Caddo Mills, and turned on Hwy 6. Just after we made the turn, I got a glimpse of something on the side of the road. Well, they say curiosity killed the cat, and there is a very good reason for that. I just had to turn around to see what it was. As we approached the object, we could see that it was the biggest turtle I had ever seen out of captivity in my entire life. Jess, my son, was 6 years old at the time. I was so amazed at this creature; I wanted him to see it so badly. We lived in Caddo Mills at the time, and even though it would take a bite out (bad choice of words, as you’ll see) our work day, I wanted to take it back to my house. This turtle was enormous! It was about 2 feet from side to side. There was moss caked on its back and it was very obvious the turtle was extremely old. I don’t recall thinking about how heavy the turtle was going to be, but he (or she) must have weighed about 80 to 100 lbs. I am just guessing the weight because I didn’t quite get to pick it up. But, I tried. PK and I got the car I was driving, positioned with the trunk close to the turtle, opened the trunk, and cleared a big area to carry my new pet. It hadn’t moved since we got there so I assumed I would just pick it up; put it in the back of my car, no problem. Just to set the scene properly, PK and I both had dresses and high heels on. Ok, I really, really wanted this turtle. I positioned myself behind the turtle, to be safe, you know. But, as I got closer, the turtle kind of stood up, hissed and shifted a bit. Little scary, but I’ve picked a turtle up before (of course, they weighed about a pound at the most), and I knew they could bite if they could reach you. I carefully reached down leaning over so the feet couldn’t scratch me. I remember having to spread my arms wide to reach each side. I put my hands on the side of the turtle, and lifted........HISSSSSS!!!!!! WHITE FLASH!!!!! SNAP!!!!! The snap I heard was no further than 6 inches away from my face. And the
Texas Twister white flash was lightning fast. I jumped back, I screamed, PK screamed, and ran right out in front of a passing vehicle. It was one of the most terrifying things that ever happened to me. The white I saw was the underside of the turtle’s neck, and the loud snap was from the most powerful jaws you can imagine. The head of the turtle was the size of a cantaloupe.
God was definitely with me that day. The powerful jaws could have taken off my entire face, and I no doubt would have died before help could have arrived. I am now pretty sure that the recent rains had washed the old turtle out of his natural habitat. I believe, after some research that it was an Alligator Snapping Turtle. They are found in streams, lakes and swamps mainly in North America, and are definitely in our neck of the woods. They have a prehistoric look due to the ridges on their shell. And, their jaws can easily crush a bone. An average weight for them is 175 lbs, but there is one in an aquarium in Tennessee that weighs 250 lbs. They can live around 100 years. And another characteristic is they can extend their necks reaching half way on their backs, and I can vouch for that. I can look back on that day and laugh now about how ridiculous it was to try to capture the giant turtle. And, I always caution little children by saying, “What do you do when you see a turtle?” Correct answer is “RUN!”

Destination Imagination TRAINING UNDER WAY Teams from various cities in the East Region gathered to enhance and improve their Destination Imagination skills on Saturday, November 14 at Vernon Elementary. Two hundred and fifty eight students participated in sessions designed to give them tips regarding make up, costumes, props, script building, and team building. DI teams work hard during the year to complete a challenge which can require technical skills, theatrical presentations, building skills, and real world problem solving. Each team will compete at the Regional Competition at Poteet High School in Mesquite on February 27th. Royse City ISD has forty four teams that will participate in the competition. Competitions are held at three different levels: Regional, State, and Global, which is held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. DI Workshop Photos: Students work with the props given to them to create costumes for their DI Challenge.

These strange quotes have been attributed to Will Rogers: A fool and his money are soon elected. A holding company is a thing where you hand an accomplice the goods while the policeman searches you. All I know is just what I read in the papers, and that’s an alibi for my ignorance. America is becoming so educated that ignorance will be a novelty. I will belong to the select few. Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for. Chaotic action is preferable to orderly inaction. Diplomacy is the art of saying “Nice doggie” until you can find a rock. Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today. Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there. Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects. Everything is funny, as long as it’s happening to somebody else.

2009 QISD Hall of Fame Inductees
Daniel Chester Cannon
Daniel Chester “Dip” Cannon was born and grew up in the Gooseneck Community in the Cash area, North of Quinlan. D.C. Cannon was devoted to his family, his community and the schools in which he served. At an early age, Mr. Cannon had a passion for reading and education. The nickname “Dip” was given to him when he was approximately three years old by his sister, Pearl, because he could not wait each day for someone to read his favorite comic strip, “Dipsy-Do” to him. In high school, Cannon was an avid basketball and baseball player. He was one of the only baseball players in the county that could hit against the famous MLB Monty Stratton. This yearning for reading and sports sparked a lifetime commitment to education and to the Quinlan Independent School District.
Son Gary Cannon is pictured receiving awards on behalf of his deceased father, D.C. Cannon from Superintendent Micheal French D.C. Cannon married Quinlan native Lillian Odell Strickland on November 30, 1935 and they built a long-lasting life together for 69 years. Their life-long friends, Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Butler were also married in the same month and year. In the first half of the century, over ten common schools in the area consolidated to create Quinlan ISD, expanding its boundaries to include over 152 square miles. Mr. Cannon served on the Gooseneck Board of Trustees until consolidation, and then became a member of the Quinlan ISD Board of Trustees. Until the 1950s, the area was a rural, vast farm community. The creation of 36,700 acre Lake Tawakoni by the Sabine River Authority brought exponential student growth to QISD in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Quinlan school leaders, W.H. Ford, C.B. Thompson, Mr. Cannon, Mr. Butler and others experienced the early growth of Quinlan ISD from a small 1A school district to a large 3A school district. Quinlan Elementary School was re-organized to include pre-kindergarten through third grade. The school was renamed D.C. Cannon Elementary School in honor of his

thirty-seven years of service as a QISD Board of Trustee. The majority of Cannon’s service to the board was as board president. Concurrent with his service as a QISD board member, Mr. Cannon worked for the Hunt County Precinct 3 for thirty years. Cannon was instrumental in the planning, constructing and general oversight of many roads in the county. He also worked as a deputy for Sheriff Red Woods for four years. Throughout the holiday seasons, Mr. and Mrs. Cannon brought holiday cheer to the Quinlan community with the largest Christmas light display in the area. Cannon was a lifetime member and leader of the First United Methodist Church of Quinlan. He has one son, Gary Cannon, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Quinlan Independent School district is proud to induct Mr. Daniel Chester Cannon into the QISD Hall of Fame.
Arlee E. Butler Sr.
Arlee E. Butler was born on August 16, 1915, in the String Town Community. He was the seventh child of Lou and Tom Butler. He attended String Town School until age eleven. His family later relocated to the Payne Store Community. After graduating from Quinlan high school in 1935, Butler went to San Francisco, California to work on the Golden Gate Bridge. Upon returning to Quinlan, Arlee married Nancy Christine Robinson on November 28, 1935. They were married for sixty-seven years and were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Nancy, in 1937 and their son, Wendell in 1939.
Daughter Nancy Young is pictured receiving awards on behalf of her deceased father, A. E. Butler from Superintendent French along with grandson Phil Young and great-grandson Tony Brown. Also pictured are Deputy Supt. Dr. Debra Crosby and FHS Principal Kell Clopton. Arlee and Nancy left their farm and moved to Pennsylvania to find work during the depression. In 1938, they returned to Quinlan to farm once again until 1941, when he moved to Richmond, California to work in the shipyards. Mr. Butler planned to work just long enough to make crop money for 1942. What he didn’t know was
that Pearl Harbor would be attacked in December of 1941. The U.S. was at war! Due to these circumstances, he was not able to return home. His job at the shipyard was frozen so his family joined him in California. While in California, Arlee worked on the repair of the Liberty Ship, which was manned by the Merchant Marines during WWII. The Great War ended in 1945. Butler returned to Quinlan to farm on the land that he was raised on and later purchased it with the money he earned while working at the shipyards. After two years, he began working for Hunt County building bridges. In the 1950s, he was contacted by McKinney Highway Construction to build hard top farm to market roads. Arlee was in charge of excavation. After two years, he purchased the Mobile Station, which was previously located on Main Street (276) in Quinlan. It became a family business where his wife and children all worked alongside of him. He sold the station about five years later, due to the illness of his wife’s parents. He returned to excavation work, until his doctor insisted he change occupations because of the damage it was doing to his health. He soon began working for a seismograph company in Dallas. Along the way, he had acquired another 183 acres to add to his previous 100 acre farm. Arlee was always a rancher at heart. Arlee then began working for the Quinlan State Bank as a teller. He was offered the position of vice president three times, which he finally accepted. He was eventually promoted to president, where he remained until his retirement in 1980. At this time, he became a full time rancher until 2001, when he sold his cattle to his grandson, Wendell Butler Jr. Upon Mr. Butler’s retirement, which coincided with lifetime best friend, D.C. Cannon’s, Butler Intermediate School was formed and was named in his honor for thirty-seven years of dedicated service on the QISD school board. Quinlan Independent School district is proud to induct Mr. Arlee E. Butler Sr. into the QISD Hall of Fame.
Dr. Irene Rae Willingham
Dr. Irene Rae Willingham grew up on “The Willingham” farm just west of Quinlan and attended Quinlan ISD. She is a 1974 graduate of Quinlan High School. Irene is the daughter of the late J.D. and Irene Willingham, long-time QHS homemaking teacher. Her mother inspired Irene to make the most of her education. While in school, Irene was active in: Panther Annual Staff, National Honor Society - serving as president her senior year, Future Teacher’s of America – serving as president her senior year, Who’s Who in American High

After completing her internship, Irene became a Nutritionist/Dietician and began a private practice in 1979. She moved to Colorado to complete her neurosurgery residency at the University of Colorado from 1985-1991. She has been a certified member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery since May of 1994. Irene was a director for the Baylor University Medical Center’s Brain Tumor Treatment Center from 2004-2007. During this time, she also worked as a Neurosurgeon at the Health Texas Physician Network in Dallas. Since 1990, Dr. Willingham has worked as a medical expert with the Professional Liability Defense Issues, representing law firms in Texas and Colorado. Willingham’s special interests include: neurotrauma, complex spine problems, clinical nutrition and women’s health and fitness. Most recently, Dr. Irene Willingham founded Aeon Health - a health behavior change company. This facility is noted for changing the way health and a wellness service are delivered and focuses on three core areas: life, health and performance. Dr. Willingham is also an active member of the Dallas Metropolitan Ballet Guild. Dr. Willingham is married to Lance Terada, M.D. and has two children, Ross and Leah. Sometimes we are so caught up in who’s right and who’s wrong that we forget what’s right and wrong. Sometimes we just don’t realize what real friendship means until it is too late.
Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right.. Forget about the ones who don’t. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

December, 2009 LADIES! DON’T LET YOUR PURSES SPROUT LEGS!
by Ginger Lane
I was in Wal-Mart the other day and was in line to return some merchandise. The lady in front of my was facing the counter with her shopping cart behind her. Her purse was sitting there, and she was not paying attention at all. There were people all around, and any one of them could have picked it up and kept walking. I started really paying attention to all the shoppers. And, all the women had their purses in the same place, and so many of them had their backs turned away focused on what they were thinking about buying. Simple fix. Please pass this on! Take the straps meant for keeping children from falling out, and slip them through the purse handles and snap them together with your purse completely zipped closed. You can shop worry free.

Sarah and her thirteen-year-old sister had been fighting a lot this year. This happens when you combine a headstrong two-year-old, who is sure she is always right, with a young adolescent. Sarah’s parents, trying to take advantage of her newfound interest in Santa Claus, reminded the two-year-old that Santa was watching and doesn’t like it when children fight. This had little impact. “I’ll just have to tell Santa about your misbehavior,” the mother said as she picked up the phone and dialed. Sarah’s eyes grew big as her mother asked “Mrs. Claus” (really Sarah’s aunt; Santa’s real line was busy) if she could put Santa on the line. Sarah’s mouth dropped open as Mom described to Santa (Sarah’s uncle) how the two-year-old was acting. But, when Mom said that Santa wanted to talk to her, she reluctantly took the phone. Santa, in a deepened voice, explained to her how there would be no presents Christmas morning to children who fought with their sisters. He would be watching, and he expected things to be better from now on. Sarah, now even more wide eyed, solemnly nodded to each of Santa’s remarks and silently hung the phone up when he was done. After a long moment, Mom (holding in her chuckles at being so clever) asked, “What did Santa say to you, dear?” In almost a whisper, Sarah sadly but matter-of-factly stated, “Santa said he won’t be bringing toys to my sister this year.”

Faith is a Lifestyle By Pastors Dean & Ruth Remmers FaithisaLifestyle@yahoo.com You’ve been asking God to help you, especially with finances, but something’s been stopping the flow. I’m not talking to sinners here, because they don’t even have a covenant with God Almighty. (However, it only takes a few seconds to step over the threshold and come into the family of God.) I’m talking to you, a born-again Christian who has asked Jesus to forgive your sins and take over your life. You know God hears and answers your prayer (I John 5:13-15), but something’s been hindering you from receiving. Who or what is stopping you? satan? (By the way, that’s not a type-o…I don’t capitalize that name or give the enemy any other honor.) No, it’s not him that’s doing it; it’s Y-O-U! Just consider what the Author and Finisher of your faith has said about your situation: “And He said to them, I saw satan falling like a lightning [flash] from heaven. Behold! I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and [physical and mental strength and ability] over all the power that the enemy [possesses]; and nothing shall in any way harm you.” (Luke 10:18-19, Amplified) You’ve been asking the Father in Jesus’ Name to fix this, and He has already answered you: “I gave you the authority; Jesus did the complete work on the cross” (my paraphrase). You’ve been given the power; you’ve been given the authority over all of the works of the enemy. So, if he is stopping up your flow of answered prayer, who
is responsible to change the situation? Y-O-U! Yeah, it’s a lot easier to tell everyone in your prayer group…to let the preacher do it…or to dial 1-800Instant-Prayer than it is to grow up in the things of the LORD and to put on the things His Blood purchased for you, but that’s what He wants you to do. While there are times to have others pray with you and for you, there are higher places that you can attain in Him. You need to stretch yourself in this arena of faith to become more effective for Him. Just imagine that Jesus came to visit you in your home. After a quick greeting, He excitedly tells you that He bought something for you. You close your eyes and when you open them again, He has laid out an elegant, expensive set of clothes for you with shoes and accessories that are beyond this world. In fact, it’s beyond anything you’ve ever hoped for or imagined. (You think, “This is all new to me, but they must be wonderful because they came from Jesus Himself.”) So, what do you tell your Savior? a) “No, Jesus, I’m not worthy. I could never walk in that.” or “I hate that You went to all that trouble, but I’m comfortable being who I am, and I’m not willing to change, not even for You. Is it possible that You could get a refund?” Or do you say… b) “Thank you so much for thinking of me…I read about this in your Word, and I know that’s just what I need. But (sob, sniff) I beg You to give it to me, pleeeeze Je-sus! Please, please, please…If You could just answer me this one time; I’ll never ask You for another thing….” Then you walk off leaving Him standing there with your
Texas Twister
gift, and you go tell everyone you meet that you don’t know why God is doing this to you, and you don’t understand why He won’t answer your prayers. Or do you say… c) “Hallelujah! It’s mine—I take it now!...Thank You, thank You, Jesus; You’re so good to me!” And you put it all on, every Blood-bought piece. And even though the world—and sometimes the church—are unfamiliar with the accessories Jesus bought for you, that doesn’t stop you! You ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and to teach You about the Gifts that Jesus has given you, and you begin to move and to walk in the place He has prepared for you. Of course, “C” is the Bible answer and should be your Final Answer. In 2010, I’d like to share more with you on how you can walk in victory every day of your life. Jesus came to give you a joy-filled life here and an eternal one with Him. Keep pressing into Him—He’s got all you’ll ever need and much more to give you!

I told Santa you were good this year....and He hasn’t stopped laughing since! *********************** A guy bought his wife a beautiful diamond ring for Christmas. After hearing about this extravagant gift, a friend of his said, “I thought she wanted one of those sporty four-wheel-drive vehicles.” “She did,” he replied. “But where was I going to find a fake Jeep?” ************************************ Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents. At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs. “I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE... I PRAY FOR A NEW NINTENDO... I guess the older I get the faster Christmas gets here. I remember when I was a kid Christmas took forever (so it seemed) to get here. Now it gets here before I am ready for it. If I’ve said that before, forgive me, as we get older! Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and don’t forget it is Jesus’ Birthday. When my grandson Jesse was small at Christmas he would say his prayers and then say, “Happy Birthday Jesus!” He is still a great joy in our lives and still saying cute things too. I found some cookie recipes this month because we all have so many parties and get-togethers this time of year that we need quick, easy and tasty ideas. These are so good you may think they are candy. Give them a try. I bet you will like them. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cookies 1 refrigerator roll Sugar or Peanut Butter “Slice & Bake: Cookies 36 Reese’s Miniature Peanut Butter Cup Candies Cut cookie dough into 9 equal slices. Cut each slice into fourths. Put one piece of the cookie dough in each muffin cup of a greased miniature muffin tin. Bake at 375 degree oven for 10 minutes. While they are in the oven, unwrap the candy. (You may need more than exactly 36 pieces, in case some disappear while unwrapping!) When the cookies are taken from the oven, immediately press one candy cup into the center of each hot cookie. Allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Remove carefully and place on a paper towel until cool. Children love to help with these. Enjoy! Sinful Seven-Layer Cookies 1 Stick Oleo 1 C. Crushed Graham Cracker Crumbs 1 6 oz. pkg. Semi-Sweet Chocolate bits 1 6 oz pkg. Butterscotch bits 1 C. Angel flake Coconut 1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 C. Pecans chopped Melt oleo in a 9’ X 13’ baking dish. Sprinkle other ingredients on top in order as they are listed. Do Not Stir or Mix Ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Allow to cool before cutting and removing from pan. Enjoy! Gooey Snickers Bars 1 (18.25 oz) German Chocolate Cake Mix ¾ C. Oleo, melted ½ C. Evaporated Milk 4 (2.07 oz.) Snickers Candy bars, sliced into 1/8 inch slices Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, combine cake mix, oleo & evaporated milk. Beat on low speed with mixer until well-blended. About 1 to 2 minutes. Spread half the batter into bottom of greased 9” X 13’ baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove dish from oven and place candy bar slices evenly over surface. Drop remaining half of batter by spoonful over candy bars, as evenly as possible. Place back in oven and bake for 20 minutes. Cookies will “jiggle” slightly on top when you remove them, that’s ok! Don’t over cook them. Let them cool; cut into bars. Enjoy! These Cookies (BELOW) are not for eating, but for decorating and giving! Let the kids help make them! Cinnamon Ornaments ¾ C. Applesauce 1 Bottle (4.12 0z.) Ground Cinnamon Also needed: Cookie Cutters Drinking Straw Colorful Ribbon (1/4” or 1/8 “ in width) Mix applesauce & cinnamon with hands in small bowl until a smooth ball of dough is formed. Using about ¼ of the dough at a time, roll dough into ¼ inch to ½ inch thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap. Peel off top sheet of plastic wrap. Cut dough into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Make a hole in the top of ornament with drinking straw. Place ornament on baking sheet. Bake in preheated 200 degree oven 2-1/2 hours. Cool ornaments on wire rack. Insert ribbon through holes and tie to hang. Makes 12 – 15 ornaments. Hope they make your tree look beautiful & they make your room smell Christmassy! Merry Christmas from Jean & Kenny!

Bob couldn’t believe it -- he’d made it to the last round of his favorite game show. “Congratulations, Bob,” said the emcee. “Answer correctly and you go home with five million dollars! “This is a two-part question on American history,” he continued. “The second half of the question is always easier. Which part would you like first?” Bob figured he’d play it safe. “I think I’ll try the second part of the question first.” The emcee nodded approvingly, while the audience was silent with anticipation. “Okay, Bob, here is your question: And in what year did it happen?” ******************************************** REALLY DUMB CRIMINALS A guy is still pleading not guilty even though he was identified in a police line-up. He has a map of Florida tattoed on his face. This guy really didn’t know when to cut his losses. He robbed a 7-11, and then called it into police when he caught a ride with strangers……who robbed him. A guy left his name and number when he lost something in a home-improvement store. They quickly found his property. He was arrested for possession of methamphetamines.

by Ginger Lane “Never Mix Business With Pleasure” is the general rule. However, when you are talking about the business of raising children, it is a rule that is meant to be broken. There are many household chores that are a lot more fun if you have someone helping you. For instance, cooking and doing the dishes afterward could be quality time spent with your children. Let them know this time is not just about work. It’s a good time to catch up on the day. Cleaning chores might go a little easier if you try teaming up on the job. For instance, suggest you both clean the living room together, then tackle their bedroom. It doesn’t have to be a serious time, make it fun by maybe singing songs, playing ‘I Spy’. We live in a busy world, so multi-tasking with cleaning and spending time with your children can get the chores done faster AND make it more fun.

for a family and unburden the extreme load that they carry
Q. My mother passed away two years ago. We had prepaid her funeral service with the funeral home prior to her death. We understood that we would not have to pay anymore, but when we went to make arrangements, we were told that we owed several more hundred dollars toward her service due to price increases. There were also numerous things that were very important to our family that was to be done during the service that the director ‘forgot’ about. Now, when I look back on my mothers funeral service I only remember what a nightmare it was. What recourse does a consumer have for poor service or overcharging? A. First, discuss your problem with the funeral director and/or management of the funeral home. If you believe you were not treated fairly, the funeral director should be given the opportunity to rectify your complaint. If this is not acceptable, you may contact the Texas Funeral Service Commission. The TFSC is the licensing and regulatory agency for all funeral home establishments, funeral directors, and embalmers in the State of Texas. You may file a complaint and secure additional information regarding mortuary laws in the State of Texas by requesting a complete copy of the Texas Occupational Rules through the Texas Funeral Service Commission at P O Box 12217 Capitol Station, Austin, Texas 78711, or 888-667-4881 (website: www.tfsc.state.tx.us). You may also contact the Federal Trade Commission. The funeral industry is regulated by the FTC and state licensing boards. If the dispute cannot be resolved by talking with the funeral director, the consumer may wish to contact the Funeral Service Consumer Assistance Program. FSCAP provides information, mediates dispute, provides arbitration, and maintains a consumer guarantee fund for reimbursement of services rendered. To contact FSCAP, call 800-662-7666. In reference to your question about your mother’s prepaid service:
A funeral director should serve as a safe haven
Without full knowledge of what was on the pre-
arrangement and at need contract, it would be unfair for me to pass judgment. The whole purpose of prearranging is to freeze the cost of services at today’s prices. It is illegal for any funeral home to charge extra for items on a prearranged contract due to price increases, infla-
on their shoulders. They are there to ‘direct’ and take considerate care of all aspects of the funeral service. Unfortunately, as with all walks of like, you will cross paths with honest, caring, and compassionate people and at times you will experience not so caring and honest individuals. I pray that one day you will be able to think about your mother and remember the wonderful little things that made her so special in your life.

A small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand in a trial--a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “Why, yes, I do know you Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a young boy. And frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you’re a rising big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.” The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Williams, do you know the defense attorney?” She again replied, “Why, yes I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. I used to baby-sit him for his parents. And he,too, has been a real disappointment to me. He’s lazy, bigoted, he has a drinking problem. The man can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the shoddiest in the entire state. Yes, I know him.” At this point the judge rapped the courtroom to silence and called both counselors to the bench. In a very quiet voice, he said with menace, “If either of you asks her if she knows me, you’ll be in jail for contempt within 5 minutes!” ********************************************************************** A big-city lawyer was representing the railroad in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher. The rancher’s prize bull was missing from the section through which the railroad passed. The rancher only wanted to be paid the fair value of the bull. The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store. The city-slicker attorney for the railroad immediately cornered the rancher and tried to get him to settle out of court. He did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking. After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn’t resist gloating a little over his success, telling the rancher, “You are really a country hick, old man, but I put one over on you in there. I couldn’t have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the t rain went through your ranch that morning. I didn’t have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!” The old rancher replied, “Well, I’ll tell you young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that durned bull came home this morning.”

I have just had a much needed prayer answered. I have wanted to know how to realize that it is God talking to me. I thought that if God Himself was talking to me that I would know it. He is all powerful and mighty so I assumed, I would hear something powerful. I expected it to be a demanding voice, something strong that would come to me and I would know without a doubt that I had heard from God. There have been many times that a thought enters my mind. It is a good thought to help others or to help myself. One time as I was getting dressed, this family came in my mind. I knew I was supposed to pray for this family. I didn’t know why but I couldn’t think of why else they would come to my mind all of a sudden. I told myself I would do it later. I was going to be late. Later never came for me to pray for this family. Sundays passed and this family had stopped coming to church. I knew they were having problems in life. But I didn’t listen to that thought; I passed it off. Months later the wife came to church and I

was very glad to see her and her daughter. I told them what had happened and I was very sorry that I didn’t pray for them. She began to tell me how they had gotten a divorce. Not just a divorce, but a divorce with a lot of anger and bitterness. Maybe had that day I would have stopped and listen to that thought God would have intervened and put his love where the anger was. Or maybe, it was just people put in my life so I could have my prayer answered to learn to listen to God’s voice. Situations like this kept happening to me. I did pray and told God I need you to show me, teach me because I am confused on how to hear your voice and know that it is you. I need to know that it is God and not just my own voice. One Friday my son brings home a picture day note from school. This thought comes to me, “you better read that note”. Oh, I think to myself, surely they wouldn’t just give me a weekend to get the money and the clothes together for picture day at school. I need like a week. Monday morning as I sat down to read my bible; I saw the note and begin to read it. Sure enough I had just sent my son to school in clothes not meant for picture day and guess what? It was picture day! I knew I should have listened to that thought! We are not getting the pictures by the way! The prayer that I prayed was answered by lessons, too many to mention. If I would have just listened things would have been better and I was be-

ginning to understand the thoughts were to help me, not to make me have to do extra stuff. What I have learned is when we ask God to help us with something we have to start looking for the answer. It’s there. He answers prayers. I was looking for something strong. What I have found is gentleness, love, kindness, someone looking out for me, taking care of me, faithfulness. Now that I get it, I listen to God’s voice, that thought in my head. It’s sweet, it means well, it cares, and it is concerned. I am so peaceful now that I know God talks to me and I hear Him. Just want to tell you God is checking to see if I am listening and I passed the test! God does have a sense of humor, if you didn’t know that! I had to make Thanksgiving dinner at my house at the last minute. The Texas Twister is about to go to print. I am so tired. The day before Thanksgiving I am cutting up my stuff for my dressing. This little thought comes “do you have sage?” I have just sat down and my in laws are on their way to stay the night. I have not been home from work very long. I think to myself, I’m pretty sure I have some. Then I remember “Picture Day at school”. Don’t think I didn’t get myself up and look to see if I had sage! God is talking to you just listen. God bless you, Misty Hensley

A business man was interviewing applicants for the position of divisional manager. He devised a simple test to select the most suitable person for the job. He asked each applicant the question, “What is two and two?” The first interviewee was a journalist. His answer was “Twenty-two.” The second was a social worker. She said, “I don’t know the answer but I’m glad we had time to discuss this important question.” The third applicant was an engineer. He pulled out a slide rule and showed the answer to be between 3.999 and 4.001. The next person was a lawyer. He stated that in the case of Jenkins v Commr of Stamp Duties (Qld), two and two was proven to be four. The last applicant was an accountant. The business man asked him, “How much is two and two?” The accountant got up from his chair, went over to the door and closed it then came back and sat down. He leaned across the desk and said in a low voice, “How much do you want it to be?” He got the job. ********************************************************************* Two attorneys went into a diner and ordered two drinks. Then they produced sandwiches from their briefcases and started to eat. The waiter became quite concerned and marched over and told them, “You can’t eat your own sandwiches in here!” The attorneys looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders and then exchanged sandwiches. ********************************************************************* A woman walked up to a little old man rocking in a chair on his porch. “I couldn’t help noticing how happy you look,” she said. “What’s your secret for a long happy life?” “I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day,” he said. “I also drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise.” “That’s amazing,” the woman said. “How old are you?” “Twenty-six,” he said.
