THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TEXAS STYLE People in Texas have trouble with all those “shalls” and “shall nots” in the ten Commandments. Folks here just aren’t used to talking in those terms.

So, they got together and translated the “King James” into “King Ranch” language: Cowboy’s Ten Commandments posted on the wall at Cross Trails Church in Fairlie, Texas.

(1) Just one God. (2) Honor yer Ma & Pa. (3) No telling tales or gossipin’.

(4) Git yourself to Sunday meeting.

(5) Put nothin’ before God. (6) No foolin’ around with another fellow’s gal.

(7) No killin’.

(8) Watch yer mouth.

(9) Don’t take what ain’t yers.

Well, that may be a bit of a stretch; however, Gary Brand of Greenville, Texas, probably thought about that movie when, on May 19, 2007, he reeled in a fish weighing over eight pounds with a full set of TEETH!!.

Brand, who was wading off the south point at Wind Point Park, said that he thought he had hooked a huge drum because it fought so hard. But then, when Brand scooped it up in his net, the strange-looking fish took one look at Gary and spit the #2 treble hook out of its mouth...liver, pork, and all. Evidently, the fish was not hooked but was just holding onto the bait and hook with its teeth!!!

That was enough to unnerve even a veteran fisherman such as Mr. Brand (shown left).

In an email sent by Kevin Storey with the Texas Parks and Wildlife, Mr. Brand’s ‘catch’ of the day was a “red-bellied pacu”.

According to Storey, “These fish are typically released by well-meaning aquarists who find they cannot take care of the fish because they get too big for their tanks or they may eat smaller fish and consume aquatic plants.

We see them occasionally in our lakes and they can cause some angler concerns because they believe they are piranhas. Their color varies a bit but they often have an attractive red coloration on their fins and belly, but the following website gives pictures that show a range of coloration: http://www.fishing-khaolak.com/gallery/freshwater/red_bellied_pacu/ red_bellied_pacu.html There is actually a state record from the San Marcos River. The fish was 19 inches long and weighed 8.95 pounds. The record was set in March 2006. The fish you pictured was probably close in size.”

According to the website, junglephotos.com, the pacu (Piaractus brachypomus), a South American freshwater fish, belongs in the piranha family. Although it’s not as aggressive as its cousin the piranha,

it is still capable of delivering serious bites with its crushing jaw system. Its teeth, which resemble human teeth, are used to cut through vegetation and crush seeds that fall into the water. Pacu are commonly sold as two to three inch ‘Vegetarian Piranhas’ to home aquarium owners. Initially they can grow an inch per month and in some cases they can double in size every month for the first year. They can quickly grow over thirty inches in length.

For this reason, many aquarium owners release their pacus in area lakes not realizing that the pacu may out-compete native species for available food, habitat, and other resources, or displace them by introducing exotic parasites or diseases.

It is very likely that the pacu caught by Gary Brand in May was released into Lake Tawakoni by one such compassionate aquarium owner.

According to Gary, this pacu will soon have a permanent place on the wall in Mr. Brand’s home.

Rules Every Camper Should Know Summer has arrived and many of us have aired out our tents and gotten our gear ready for another season of camping. Some of us will plan our vacations in area parks or make road trips to a National Park we always wanted to visit.

The rest of us have our RVs set up at a park on the lake and look forward to doing nothing but swinging in the hammock. No matter how we choose to camp, one thing will be the same; we will all encounter a camper who does not know the rules.

“Rules??” some of you will say, “like football has rules??” Well, perhaps not like rules of the game, but there are rules; or maybe I should say manners or courteous ways to behave that every camper should know.

So if you are a first time camper, pay attention!!! And for those of you that have been getting funny looks in the campground from you camping neighbors, maybe this might explain why.

1. Don’t Trash Your Campsite - People want to view nature, not the local dump. Keep your trash picked up and dispose of it properly.

2. Don’t Walk Through Other Campers Sites It’s like walking into someone’s house uninvited.

It’s a home without walls and campers have the right to expect some privacy.

3. Don’t Speed in the Campground - Most campgrounds have posted speed limits. Observe them. Camping is a family activity and there are often children present. Besides you’re there to relax…there’s no need to rush!!

4. Observe Quiet Hours - Just because you are outside doesn’t mean you can disturb your neighbors ‘til the break of dawn. People have small children trying to sleep or they may be traveling and need to get up early. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time to get your site set up before quiet hours begin.

5. Don’t Let Your Kids Run Wild - Kids should be able to have fun, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t mind them. One of the number one things campers like are clean bathrooms and yet

one of the top causes of trashed bathrooms are unattended children.

6. Don’t Let Your Pets Run Wild - Keep your pets on a leash. Fido may not hurt a fly, but your fellow campers don’t know that. Take him to an open area or designated area for potty time and clean up after him. And for heavens sake, keep them out of the bath houses!! You may want Poochie in the bathroom with you, but not everyone shares your love for your pet.

7. Learn How to Use Your Equipment Before You Leave Home - Learn to set up that tent and back up that RV before you hit the great outdoors.

Everyone has an emergency and most of us are friendly folks willing to lend a helping hand, but you will have a better time if you learn to use your gear before hand.

8. Don’t Wash Dishes in the Drinking Fountain or Bathroom Sink - People don’t want to see your corn when they bend down for a drink nor do they want to clean out your left over dinner from the bathroom sink before they brush their teeth.

9. Don’t Clean Your Fish in Your Campsite - That’s what the fish cleaning station is for. It smells, it draws flies and critters like skunks and opossums, and some of us just don’t want to know where our food comes from.

10. Don’t Feed the Wildlife - Store your food appropriately and under no circumstances should you or your children feed the wildlife. Wild animals are WILD and unpredictable and they may carry rabies.

Above all remember, you are a guest. You would not go to a friend’s or relative’s home and speed through their back yard, have a argument about how to park the car, play “Sweet Home Alabama” over and over again until 3 in the morning, walk into their bedroom without knocking, let your dog go all over their carpet, leave every light in the house on all night and leave the place a mess.

Manners do count even when you’re roughing it.

And, here are a couple of recipes I promised Back at the Ranch!

Chocolate Icing 4 squares unsweetened chocolate 1 C powdered sugar 2 T hot water 2 eggs 6 T butter or oleo (cut in 4 pieces) Melt chocolate in top of small double boiler over hot water. Transfer to small bowl for electric mixer. Add sugar, water, and eggs. Beat at medium high speed until smooth, scraping bowl as necessary to keep mixture smooth. Beat in butter, one piece at a time, beating until smooth after each addition. and another

Chocolate Icing 2 ½ T butter or oleo (melted) 3 T cocoa (sifted if lumpy) ½ C powdered sugar ½ t vanilla about 1 T hot water In a bowl, beat together melted butter, cocoa, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in the water, really good until mixture is thin and of good consistency.

Pour over cake and let it run down sides. This can be doubled!

“Prevention, Prevention, Prevention” If you’re afraid of the dentist, then you’re not alone. Many people avoid going to the dentist because they’re afraid treatment will be painful or too expensive. As a result, they often do not go until they have a major problem and are in pain. When a tooth nerve is affected by decay, but not infected, you will usually experience slight sensitivity to cold or sugar.

As bacteria work their way deeper into the tooth and the nerve becomes infected, then the tooth will usually get more sensitive and the pain lingers.

Then, as the nerve dies, sometimes the pain will temporarily go away, and many people think the problem has gone away as well. It is at this point, however, that the bacteria are working their way down through the roots of the tooth into the bone, and when this occurs—watch out! That is when the pain of a tooth abscess sets in, and this is the point at which far too many people decide to seek dental treatment. If a tooth nerve is infected, there is only one option available to save the tooth, and that is to do root canal treatment and stabilize the tooth with a crown. While costs for this treatment can vary greatly, costs are typically a minimum of $1000 and can more than double depending on the number of roots on the tooth and type of crown desired. If you cannot afford this treatment, then your only other option for getting out of pain is to have the tooth removed. Choose this treatment option often, and you will end up with a smile you’re embarrassed to show as well as other serious problems like difficulty eating! Many people think that dentures are an easy solution, but I can assure you that you would much rather eat with your own teeth than with a mouth filled with plastic!

The good news is that many dental problems can be prevented with good oral hygiene and regular checkups. I know you’ve heard that old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and it is especially true when talking about your teeth. Most cavities can be prevented by minimizing sugar intake and by brushing and flossing regularly. And if you do get a cavity, regular checkups with your dentist can catch the problem before it grows into something serious.

If a cavity is found early on, it can often be repaired easily and inexpensively, without even the need for a shot! If left alone, however, the problem will continue to grow. It will not go away on its own, it will only get worse! So first, try to prevent problems by brushing twice a day and flossing. Second, try to catch any potential problems early on with regular dental check ups.

You’ll save yourself a lot of pain and expense in the long run. Take care of your teeth, and they’ll take care of you.

History tells us that the first Lone Star flag to fly over our Texian troops was one made by a seventeen year old Georgia girl, Joanna Troutman.

She made the flag, a silk banner with a fivepointed blue star, for a battalion of Georgia men who were coming to Texas to help with the fight against Mexico. On one side of the flag above the star was the inscription, “Liberty or Death,: and on the other side the Latin phrase”Ubi Libertas Habitat Ibi Patria Es,” – “Where Liberty dwells, there is my country.” The flag was first flown over the Americana Hotel in Velasco on January 8, 1836. As it was lowered that night, the flag was ripped and tattered; however, it remained the flag of the Georgia troops.

When Texas was declared free at Washingtonon-the Brazos on March 2, 1836, Joanna’s silk banner was flown at Goliad on March 8, making it the first Texas flag to be flown after Texas was proclaimed free from Mexico.

Following the massacre at Goliad on March 27, nothing remained of the silk flag; however, Joanna was not forgotten. She died in 1879 and was buried in a family plot in Georgia without ever having set foot in Texas. In 1912, Texas Governor, Oscar Colquitt, a native of Georgia, persuaded the Texas Legislature to begin legal proceedings to have her body moved and reburied in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. This was done on February 26, 1912, and in 1919, a bronze statue of a girl sewing a flag was erected in honor of Joanna. It is the only statue of a woman erected in the state cemetery.

family, RC Bridges, his wife, Sherron, and their children, Will and Taylor.

Well, the thing of interest out there is that Wild Thing is a buffalo, and RC’s been dancing with him! Yep, dances with him. On CMT, Bill Engvall named RC “The Buffalo Tamer” for riding a chariot behind Wild Thing.

And, Wild Thing can pull a sleigh for Taylor, a plow, and lets Will ski behind him. It’s the darndest thing you have ever seen. RC can’t dance with him anymore because of the buffalo’s size, but they still let

has been a rodeo clown; halter broke full grown bulls, and trained horses.

He has participated in just about every type of rodeo event. He has won 2 world championships in cutting. And, Yep, broken just about every bone in his body at one time or another, his neck several times, had to have reconstruction surgery for a facial injury, and lost the sight in his left eye (now corrected by surgery). He still does the training, the horse shoeing and teaching of both.

RC and Sherron love each other, their family, and they all love Wild Thing. They claim, and it looked to be true, that Wild Thing loves them, too. He follows RC around wherever he goes. RC and Sherron married 8 years ago, and renewed their vows in 2006, with Wild Thing as the best man. Yep, the best man carrying rings on his horns.

They also have a saddle making company, and they are beautiful saddles. You can check them out at www.bisonsaddles.zoomshare. com………Yep, Bison Saddle Co. Sherron is also a great photographer. She does the full glamour shots with beautiful costumes, and specialty photos of animals.

He has to, because he weighs 1300 lbs. He has his own room attached to the house. Yep, his own room. It is decorated just as I would imagine a buffalo would like. His favorite outside toy is a big green plastic trashcan.

And, after meeting him, I was told he liked me because he didn’t stomp at me. Well, if he had stomped, I’d a been long gone! I watched Sherron let Wild Thing give her a kiss on the cheek …….Yep, a kiss. RC was in the pen with him rubbing him on the head. And, I got to pet him, too.

RC started his cowboy career very young. At 14, he started out at Anderson’s S & J Ranch in Plano, after being told by Neal Gay, and Jim Shoulders he was to young for the Mesquite rodeo. Since that time, he has been (and is) a cutting horse trainer, and was the first to put on The Worlds First Buffalo Cutting Contests in 1996. The contest was won by Doug Jordan from Lone Oak. RC didn’t enter because he didn’t think a man should enter his own contest. He shoes horses, and teaches horse shoeing.

He has held cutting horse training clinics in Germany and Holland. He

This is a new addition for Texas Twister. With the participation of Quinlan ISD and our advertisers, we hope to bring you interesting stories each month about students and teachers. We hope to add additional schools throughout the year. August 27th is the first day back to school for students, and as I was looking for information to pass on to you, I couldn’t help but get excited at the prospects for their new year.

Students!

School is the grand opening of your future. Embrace it. Your education is a privilege, an experience that will define you in later years. In today’s world, absolutely anything is possible.

You might want your own business, publish your own paper, work with numbers at financial institutions, or travel to foreign countries and be able to converse with them in their own language, even if slightly. You might work with companies helping them to manage their budgets in one way or another. You might be able to help non-profit organizations find more money to further their cause. You can be involved in your community to further growth, bring new jobs, and help make it be a place people would love to live. You will definitely want to budget your family finances, schedule your family’s time for vacations, and become an adult that no matter what you do, you hold your head high with accomplishments. You will need to have the social skills to work to resolve issues among family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, no matter what your profession. And, your school years are the best possible gateway to a happy, successful life.

I have had the pleasure to do each of the things listed, and it was my 12 years of education that laid the groundwork for my opportunities.

When your education is completed at QISD, you will need to be on time (even if it is your own company), follow company rules (even if it is your own company), conform to company policy (even if it is your own company), and meet your obligations of what is expected of you (even if it is your own company). It will be a lot like your school years.

So…………..Get excited about your education, be on time, be dependable, respectful, and join in sports and clubs. In other words, GET INVOLVED. It will pay off in more ways than you can ever imagine. Good luck and have a great 2006-2007 year!

Quinlan ISD Online Gradebook Available QISD provides parents at almost all grade levels the opportunity to review your student’s grades online via a secure Internet web site called K-12 Planet. These daily grade reports are updated at least once weekly. This information is available to any parent, guardian, or student who requests access. A trip to the campus office is required during the sign-up process in order to verify your identity should you subscribe. To get the process started, contact Betty O’Neal with the Quinlan ISD Technology Department by telephone at 903-356-0564 or via email at betty.oneal@ quinlanisd.net. We will take down your pertinent information and forward it to the campus, who will then contact you to come down pick up your login information for the K-12 Planet web site. As adults we may not view a child’s behavior as grief as it often is demonstrated in ways which we misunderstand as “moody”, “cranky”, “withdrawn” or other behavioral patterns which do not appear to us to be grief. When a death occurs, children need to be surrounded by feelings of warmth, acceptance and understanding. This may be a tall order to expect of the adults who are experiencing their own grief and upset. Caring adults can guide children through this time when the child is experiencing feelings for which they have no words and thus can not identify. In a very real way, this can be a growth

I have been reading your paper since it came out and I just love it! My check engine light came on in my 99 Ford Focus. I have always heard to ignore it if my car seems to be running fine. How serious is it?

Paula via e-mail Vehicles have never been known to have a sense of humor, so take this and all warning lights seriously. I’m glad you asked this because, unfortunately, I see people ignore the check engine light in their car all the time. This CAN be disastrous to your car and pocketbook, if ignored. The thing to remember is that this light is the only indication the car gives you when the computer sees something out of a specified value for a given time. Your check engine light can mean anything from leaving a gas cap a little loose, to being an early sign your engine or transmission is about to need a major repair, if not taken care of immediately. Regardless, it is never a good idea to leave it unchecked. Almost any shop can now scan the car and give you a rough idea of what is going on in just minutes. They will let you know if it is something that needs immediate attention, or if it is a “false alarm” like leaving a gas cap loose. Either way, have it checked; it could be killing your gas mileage and or doing unnecessary damage to more costly parts by not replacing less expensive ones in a timely manner. It is never a good idea to neglect your means of transportation, and thanks for your kind words about the paper.

be shipped there by a railroad flat car, but never made it. There was a storm in Texarkana, that blew the airship off and destroyed it.

The Wright Brothers came along in 1903, and with full media attention went down in the history books as the first powered flight. It wasn’t until the 1970’s, that Pittsburg fought the historians and won. There is a full sized replica of the Ezekiel Airship displayed in Pittsburg at the Northeast NO WHERE ELSE BUT TEXAS, the Ezekiel Texas Heritage Center and Museum. There is an Airship was the first powered flight. It was built official state historical marker in honor of Rev. and flown in Pittsburg, Texas (my home town) in Cannon and his airship.

1902. The boys from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina Cannon did build a second airship in 1911, but did not get airborne (powered) for another year. it was also destroyed… during flight. And, that In 1898, there was an offer of huge prizes for also destroyed any future effort for Cannon to try the invention of a flying machine that could again. Pittsburg media just didn’t get the word out.

The Ezekiel Airship was designed by a preacher, saw miller, and inventor, Rev. Burrell Cannon. He got his idea of a flying machine from the Old Testament, the book of Ezekiel.

“The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the color of beryl; and they four had one likeness; and their appearance was as it were a wheel within the middle of the wheel.”

(Ezekiel 1:16) The design was completed around 1900. There was to be a 26 foot wingspan, wheels within wheels, several levers for control, made of fabric and wood, and it would be powered by a four cylinder gas engine. 10 friends later, with a total of $20,000 investment, The Ezekiel Airship Manufacturing Company was formed. The airship was built at P. W. Thorsell’s foundry in Pittsburg, and the pilot of the first flight was Gus Stamps, a worker at the Foundry.

Stamps and the workers decided to “try it out” in a pasture for the first flight in 1902. Rev. Cannon wasn’t even there to see it. He was at a nearby church preaching. The airship went upward for about 10 feet, then Stamps killed the power when the airship started heading towards a fence. The first flight was about 160 feet. (A year later, the Wright Brothers flew their first powered flight 300 ft.)

Needing more financial backing and interest in the manufacturing, Rev. Cannon decided to take the airship and display it in St. Louis. It was to

Our Ten Gallon Salute this month is to the Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department. I spent some time with Chris Moore, who serves as Fire Chief.

I’ve always known it was a volunteer facility, but until today, I never really thought about what that means. All members are completely voluntary, and no one receives any financial Peggy Bedingfield with the Lone Oak Newsletter.) compensation whatsoever.

The department depends mostly on donations to run.

So, not only do they risk their lives for the residents of Lone Oak area, they have to keep enough funds in the account to do it.

Most of them have full time jobs, families, and all the same responsibilities the rest of us do.

But, these guys (and gals) are ready at a moments notice to respond to all types of emergencies, an average of 300 to 350 per year. They each know the others schedule, so they know who is available and who isn’t. They get up in the middle of the night, sometimes volunteer all night, then work their regular job during the day.
