Anna’s history can be traced back to the early 1800s when a group of settlers arrived from Fort English in Fannin County and settled along Throckmorton Creek about three or four miles south of Anna. A few years later, the Houston and Texas Central Railway passed through the area, making Anna an important stop on its journey between Dallas and Denison.

There are many stories of the early days of Anna, but the main one is that it was a thriving community in its day. A number of businesses operated in the early days of the town, including a saloon, store, meat market and drugstore.

According to local historian Chester A. Howell, the first business to establish in the town was a general store run by Greer and Barnett. Other stores were established by Guinn and Davis, Strother Brothers, and Jim Guthrie.

By 1907 a group of connected buildings were built on the south side of Main Street by Milt Hornsby. The back part of the building served as the interurban station when the electric railway began to run through Anna. The front part of the building was used as a drugstore and blacksmith shop.

The city incorporated in 1913, with John Greer as its first mayor. In the same year, a company called the Greenville and Whitewright Northern Traction Company was formed to build a line between Anna and Blue Ridge via Westminster.
