PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Everyone, Here we are well into 2017. School for most is out for the summer and our jobs are humming along. I never realized how good I had it back in the school days. Seems like all I wanted was to finish and get a job to make some money. Duh? What was I thinking?

Something else many of you may not have realized is that TTA is celebrating it’s 70th anniversary this year. It all started way back in 1947. World War II was over and sentiment in America was high. It was during this time a group of foresighted men engaged in the business of caring for turf began to discuss organizing to share ideas and educate each other. Frank Goldthwaite, founder of the Texas Toro Company, submitted a list of names to Dr. R. C. Potts, Agronomy Professor at Texas A&M and grandfather of Past President and current Board member Craig Potts, to form an Advisory Committee for Turf in Texas. This group was comprised of turf professionals from across the state and they began to organize a turf conference for January of 1947. This was the first Southwest Turf Conference and it was held on the Texas A&M campus 20-22 January 1947. Registration was $5.00 and rooms on campus were available for $1.00/night, including linens and a towel! My how times have changed!

These organizers gathered informally on Sunday evening, 19 January, and voted to form the Texas Turf Association. Gordon F. Jones was elected the first President and he presided over the rest of the now formal meeting. The state was divided into 6 Regions and 2 Directors were appointed form each Region. In addition, an Advisory Committee was formed representing turf from 5 venues. Those were Lawns, Roadsides, Parks, Golf Courses, and Airports. Once again, My how times have changed!

From these humble beginnings the Texas Turfgrass Association has grown into a group that has provided education and training for Decades! Close to $2 million dollars have been invested back into the Texas Turf industry through the guidance of only a few Executive Directors and the direction of the Board of Directors. The Board allocated $175,000 in 1990 to develop the Texas Turfgrass Economic Impact Survey. The industry of Texas Turf had a 7.4 Billion dollar impact way back then! Pretty big number for grass!

The original Texas Turf Association was the first in the US to unite “ All Turf Interests” in the state. TTA today still seeks to be the unifying voice for “all phases of turf ” in Texas. It is up to all of us to push toward that goal and build TTA into a strong and viable association for the future. That future for turf in Texas is bright and Green!

I plan on seeing many of you at Horseshoe Bay 9-11 July for our Summer Conference and Equipment Rodeo. Please spend a minute while there to visit with Shirley and tell her what an incredible job she has been doing for the last 3 decades as our Executive Director. It will be time well spent!

2016 Complex of the Year

Texas Bank Sports Complex & Rio Concho Community Park San Angelo, Texas

The complex is a total of 80 acres which runs alongside the Concho River. It has 55 acres of irrigated turf which is made up of Tifway 419 Hybrid Bermuda grass. There is a total of 15 fields; 10 multipurpose fields (softball, baseball, football, soccer), 2 baseball fields, 2 little league fields and (1) tee ball field. In addition to the fields the complex also has 2 restroom/concession facilities, with a 3rd to start construction in the winter of 2016. Besides sports fields, this lighted complex also provides 4 sand volleyball courts, a community park with playground, several picnic tables, an overlook site of the Concho River, and 4 large parking lots. The complex was completed in 2009 and is maintained by the City of San Angelo Park’s Department Staff. The complex is located in the West Texas Region in San Angelo, Texas. There is 1 coordinator, 5 full time employees (3-man crew for turf maintenance and a 2-man crew for infield and facilities maintenance) and 1 seasonal worker.

Fields are mowed at an 1 ¼” 2-3 times a week depending on growing conditions and non-field sites are mowed at 1 ½” once per week. String trimming occurs once a week which includes all field fence lines, edging of all sidewalks and community park area. During the growing season the complex is irrigated weekly to a mini-mum depth of 6 inches. We fertilize 4 to 6 times per year and aerate 3 to 5 times per year. The clay infields are leveled, drug, and watered daily with nail dragging on an as needed basis. Infields are top-dressed periodically throughout the playing season with diamond pro conditioner and infield clay material. Temporary fences are put up for certain tournaments and girls softball leagues. Foul lines on fields are painted once every 2 weeks. Pesticide applications are made through-out the year on an as needed basis. All facilities and parking lots are cleaned on a daily basis.

During the offseason winter months, yearly up-keep Is performed to include painting of foul poles and buildings, pressure washing of sidewalks and bleachers, restriping the parking lots as needed, building maintenance and infield renovations –( tilling up and mixing clay, releveling of playing surface, replacing pitching mounds, home plates and base anchors as needed).

Equipment used for daily upkeep of the complex include (1) truck, (2) utility trailers, (3) Toro rotary cut mowers for fields, (1) Toro rotary cut mower for non-field sites, (1) Exmark zero-turn mower, (1) Toro

versa vac, (2) Toro workman with rahn infields units attached, 2() John Deere gators with one infield rascal MVP unit attached, (1) Polaris ranger, (1) EZ Go golf cart, (1) 100 gallon 3-point boom spray tank, (2) 30 gallon spray tanks, (1) cone spreader, (2) push spreaders, (3) drag mats, (2) gracco field painters, (4) string trimmers, (5)blowers and other misc. equipment.

Balanced fertilizers, 21-0-0 fertilizer, liquid fertilizers, pre and post herbicides, diamond pro conditioner and infield clay, pioneer field paint, diamond pro chalking dust, custodial supplies, etc.

The annual operating budget for the complex is $794,000. The irrigation System is auto-mated through a central control system.

All fields, walk paths, parking lots and facilities are lighted by the Musco Lighting company.

The sports complex is used throughout the entire year for sports and non-related sports events. On average, there are 45 events/tournaments each year to include the TLCA Easter Fest, which brings in up to 20,000 people and is said to be the biggest Easter egg hunt in Texas with over 150,000 eggs (eggs dropped by helicopter). There are 4 sessions of adult softball leagues throughout the year with an average of 120 teams, flag football with 90 teams and little league play with 30 teams. Seasonal rentals in-clude girls and boys high school softball and baseball as well as Girls Fast Pitch with 55 teams. This year the complex was host for several large events to include the Texas Police Games for soft-ball and flag football, 3 USSSA baseball tournaments with average team total of 95, West Texas All-star Girls Fast Pitch tournament with 85 teams, and Girls Fast Pitch Midnight Madness with 80 teams.

2016 Soccer Field of the Year - University Mike A. Myers Stadium & Soccer Field (Austin)

Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field (MMS) is a multi-use facility located in Austin, TX. and is home to the University of Texas Women’s Soccer team, while also host to the Uni-versities Men’s and Women’s Track program. Construction was completed in 1998, and since then MMS has hosted numerous events ranging from high school to professional.

Last year the stadium hosted thirty-six events that included soccer, track, kid’s clinic, and camps. While this may seem like a small amount for a facility it is the daily use that the stadium receives that creates the challenges. Over a typical twelve month span the stadium is only officially closed 3-5 days a year. This is when they repaint their track in December to prepare for the upcom-ing outdoor track season. Someone is using the stadium nearly every day for some form of activ-ity for. A typical soccer season starts in August and will run till November— this creates daily use for practices and games. At the same time in the middle of August the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country team will begin their season. They will use the stadium daily till November running on the grass for warm ups and cool downs. Dur-ing the month of October, the track team will be-gin their workouts for indoor season.

Since they do not have an indoor facility the field and sta-dium will be used for that as well. This will con-tinue all the way into December till about a week before Christmas. On a normal day the facility can be used from 6:30 am till around 6:00 pm at night. The stadium uses a Musco lighting system that allows them to conduct events at any time of day or night.

In January, track will start up again with soccer starts hosting winter camps. February brings the start of the spring soccer season and that

will run till May with different practice schedules. March brings the Texas Relays, this is one of the largest track meets in the nation, and will consist of four days of track and field being conducted in the stadium.

During a track meet the grass portion of the field is used for the shot, discuss, and javelin events. They host two more track meets before concluding the season with the State UIL Track Meet that last three days. During the months of June and July they host several weeks of soccer and track camps. During these months they will conduct their yearly aerification, verticutting, and topdressing when the schedule allows it. This year they finished up camps six days before the start of the new soccer season, leading to a quick turnaround.

The playing surface for MMS is a 90,000 sq. ft. GN-1 Bermuda grass surface. In 2013 they re-placed the goal mouths area (600 Sq. foot on each end) with latitude 36 as a test plot. They have an eight zone irrigation system utilizing six Hunter I -40 ON nozzles per station on four different zones and six Hunter I-40 ADJ per station on four stations along the perimeter. They also utilize a Toro turf Guard system to aid in monitoring our water needs. The fertilization program is something that they have been working on for the past three years.

In the beginning they were using 10-12 pound of nitrogen per year to maintain the field. One of the main issues on the field was the grass would run and have extremely long stolons. This would lead to scalp in the summer and would not allow them to mow across our field. Last year they had only applied about four pounds in mul-tiple applications using earth works 5-4-5, and should end the year around six. While dropping the nitrogen they are adding potassium and gyp-sum on a monthly basis, along with applications of Kick Soil Conditioner and periodically applica-tions of 12-0-0 with micronutrients. In the three

years, they have never been able to mow across the field for the start of the soccer season. Last season after the second year of lower fertilizer rates along with bi-weekly brushings or a verticut they waere able to mow across the field.

They are very fortunate to have an excel-lent stock of equipment and workers. While there is one he main caretaker for 95% of the mainte-nance at MMS he does have assistance from five others that will come over and help out when needed. Their equipment consists of a Toro Work-man, Toro Reel Master 5010H, John Deere 3215 A with verticutting reels, John Deere Aerifier, Wiedenmann Terra

Spike GX1 6 HD, John Deere Tractor 4052, Buffalo Blower, Toro sweeper, Toro Spray rig, Vicon practices and events that happen in this facility is their hardest challenge. With a facil-ity that is ba-sically used every day, they have dedicated their efforts to insure that they are pro-viding the best field possible. This is accom-plished by doing whatever it takes no matter the time of day, and the conservation of a vital natu-ral resource. They are striving to reduce the amount of products that they apply to the field on a yearly basis, and use more sustainable products when available. A dedication to the student athletes and desire to produce the best looking field for anyone that enter this stadium is why Mike A. Myers is the best in the state.

2017 SUMMER CONFERENCE INFORMATION

2016 Soccer Field of the Year - Municipal City of Grapevine • Oak Grove Soccer Complex

Our Oak Grove Soccer Athletic Complex is a high quality sports area in a landmark civic park taking advantage of unique settings on the shores of Lake Grapevine in North Central Texas. Oak Grove Soccer fields were built in 1978 and more fields have been added to the complex through-out the years to its’ current configuration of 7 fields.

During Normal Years: We host 2 tournaments a year 1 being sponsored by our local youth association over a Friday night thru Sunday night and 1 being sponsored by an outside provider lasting 3 days. We also have an outside select league that play on our fields as well as two different adult leagues.

Oak Grove Soccer fields have an automatic irrigation system. It operates off of a Flowtronics VFD 1,100 gpm pump station that utilizes untreated lake water (Grapevine Lake) for its water source.

We have an Irrinet control system central con-troller and Hunter I-20 sprinkler heads. Of the 7 fields in the complex 4 are lit. These fields are used 4 nights a week for practices and are used on weekends from 9am-10pm. These fields are normally used approximately 36 hrs a week on average from February-June and August-mid December.

Not Normal Last 18 Months: Round 1 Starting on May 15, 2015 my 2 closest fields to Lake Grapevine started going under water and stayed under water (inches deep and up to 14-16 ft. deep) thru August 20. That’s 96 days total for that round. These fields were out of the water for 98 days. However !

From this point we verticutt and swept the fields multiple times as well as core aerated several times, each being about a week apart. We top-dressed each field with app. 25 tons of sand when we core aerated.

We have not replanted/re-grassed any areas of the fields. We did do hand topdressing in areas where fish were clearing out spawning areas.

There were also areas messed up from wave action on the surfaces.

We do have some weeds we will be addressing at the end of August.

Our plan is to open these fields for play September 17th, 2016. We are not going to over-seed these fields for winter play so we won’t have to worry about spring transition issues next year.

My team takes a lot of pride in taking care of all the athletic fields in Grapevine. The City is constantly being asked by outside tournament providers to host soccer, softball or baseball events.

We finally think we are done!

2016 Soccer Field of the Year - Commercial FC Dallas • MoneyGram Soccer Park

MoneyGram Soccer Park is a premier soccer venue located in Dallas, Texas. This site was originally a landfill until a joint venture was formed with the City of Dallas and FC Dallas. The many years of planning and developing lead to Moneygram’s opening in April of 2014 Moneygram’s facility boasts 14 professional grade full size soccer fields, 10 of which have lights and 6 youth size fields. Moneygram Soccer Park is open for play approximately 10 months out of the year. Moneygram hosts youth academy leagues, adult leagues, and a range of national tournaments. Money-gram has also had the privilege to host multiple national soccer teams from several countries around the world as well as international soccer clubs. Moneygram staff takes great pride in hosting trainings of international teams for both club and country.

One of the longest running international tournaments that Moneygram has the privilege of hosting is the Dallas Cup. The Dallas Cup is a week long tournament with teams from several different countries as well as teams from all over the United States. It has been estimated that the economic impact for the City of Dallas from just this tournament is around $20-30 mil-lion annually. Moneygram’s staff often refers to this tournament as their “Super Bowl” and strive for perfection each April.

a large site with a small staff not only requires great planning and efficiency from each employee, but each individual must be cross trained to do multiple tasks on any given day. Money-gram has a wide range of equipment which consists of two Kubota tractors, three fairway reel mow-ers, two rotary mowers, a 200 gallon chemical sprayer, Pro Sweep Vacuum and four utility carts. Each tractor has multiple attachments, which include a Lely spreader, Verticutter, Slicing Aerator, Procore Aerator, and a 6 yard top-dresser. The equipment is a major reason that Moneygram staff is able to maintain the complex in an efficient manner throughout the soccer seasons. Compaction seems to be one of the bigger challenges that Moneygram’s staff is confronted with, so the cultural program dictates that staff must slice or cross-tine the fields every Monday to reduce compaction from weekday trainings and weekend games. Fields are mowed up to three times a week leaving staff one day to paint and another to set up for the multiple games hosted over the weekend. All fields are striped with a field lazer Graco painter each week. In the summer staff will coreaerify and top dress every soccer field once with about 20 tons of sand per acre. Moneygram’s 34 acres of soccer fields are over-seeded with a perennial rye blend

Moneygram’s staff consists of 4 full time employees and 2 part-time employees to manicure the 34 acres of fields, 4 acres of beds and the additional 40 acres of common areas. The fields at Moneygram were planted with Celebration Bermuda grass and are annually over-seeded with a professional blend of Rye grass for winter play. Maintaining such

at 550 pounds to the acre. The winter rye will help ensure a healthy playing surface for all the winter play. During the winter months grow blankets are used to help the rye grass mature and grow when the temperatures are cool. The facility boasts enough grow blankets to cover 2 full fields. Blankets are moved every 7-10 days to help with growth and protect from frost burn.

Moneygram’s fertility pro-gram consists of granular fertilizer as well as foliar applications. Granular applications consist of triple 18 and Sulfate of Potash-Magnesia 0-0-22 which are both applied at 200 lbs. to the acre, five times a year, in addition Replenish 8-2-2 which is an organic fertilizer is applied once per year at 435 lbs per acre. The foliar applications consist of a wetting agent and several Earthworks products.

17 Staff has seen the best response of growth and recovery in the Celebration Bermuda grass when using these foliar organic products.

Foliar applications are done during the summer growing months on a biweekly basis. There are 8 foliar applications made to the soccer fields each year.

There are numerous challenges to maintaining athletic fields built on a land-fill. In the first few months staff experienced areas where debris had worked its way to the sur-face, mainly rebar and concrete. Staff has cut up-wards of 50 pieces of rebar in the initial months of acceptance, but hasn’t had to in a couple of years. Staff has also experienced some other interesting challenges such as large rocks underneath the soil, a sheet of plywood under one field and bur-ied sprinkler heads. The significant challenge that remains is the dense clay sod that was laid on the fields. This clay if not aerified weekly will seal off and as our tests have shown results in a infiltration rate of zero.

The biggest challenge that the Moneygram staff faces is keeping the large irrigation system running in a landfill. Texas soils are known for its ability to move, and in a landfill the movement is magnified.

This system tends to have multiple leaks each summer which the staff is quick to fix. As with most things, time and experience breads knowledge, and thus is the case pertaining to the Moneygram Soccer Park irrigation system. Staff has made some minor adjustments to nozzle sizes, operating pressure and pump maintenance which has yielded less irrigation repairs. The staff never knows what they might experience from day to day, it could be mowing, irrigation repairs, plumbing is-sues or even pouring concrete. Whatever the challenge is, you can be sure that Moneygram’s staff will meet each challenge head on with a “can do” attitude and creative thinking to solve the quandary at hand. It is this ideology that will ensure that Moneygram Soccer Park remains as one of the premier soccer venues in Texas.

Moneygram Soccer Complex’s irrigation system is operated by 4 Hunter ACC irrigation clocks. The Hunter 2 wire system has 320
