Summer 2021 is gone and here in Texas we are looking forward to cooler days of Fall 2021!

1st and 2nd quarters have been tremendous. Thank you to all our Clients and Associates for a record-breaking year so far! With the ongoing changes and challenges we all face in our world; we are humbled with the trust you all have put in Texas Ranch Sales.

We continue to build and expand the vision of the company to optimally fulfill the standard of our clients’ expectations.

I would like to give attention and recognition to the outstanding Texas Ranch Sales advertising Team. They are continually pushing the limits of TRS representation across Texas and a national level, always advocating on the frontier of expansion!

So far 2021 has showed us that buyers are still highly motivated to find and purchase their own piece of Texas. While we haven’t seen a reduction in those eager to buy, we have seen a scarcity in the number of new places hitting the market.

Seller’s wishing to take advantage of the 1031 tax exchange benefits are reluctant to move forward with selling their current property because they are struggling to find a new ranch to move those funds into.

This reality will cause prices to steadily increase over the next 12-18 months.

Our advice to buyers currently looking is to find a property they like and to make the purchase.

C reamy Dijon Venison Backstrap DIRECTIONS 1. Cut backstrap into ¾” medallions. Pat dry with a paper towel.

• 1 small white onion, finely diced 6. Slowly whisk in the white wine and chicken broth. Keep • 2 gloves of garlic, minced stirring till combined. Bring to a simmer for several minutes • Fresh Thyme or Sage and let the sauce thicken.

• 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 7. Don’t worry if it isn’t a smooth texture yet- this will work itself • Cracked black pepper out.

• 1 small white onion, finely diced 8. Add the remainder of the Dijon mustard and fresh thyme (or • 2 gloves of garlic, minced sage) to the sauce and return to a simmer. Cook for about 2 • ½ cup of white wine minutes.

• ½ cup of chicken broth 9. Then, add cream and return to a simmer. Turn off heat and • ¼ cup of heavy whipping cream return the backstrap to the skillet, baste it in the sauce.

10. EAT! Best served with a good starch like mashed potatoes or rice to absorb all the flavors of the sauce!

ANNA LISA LEAL

“Twisted” 32x40

Botanical subjects are the primary subject that stokes Anna Lisa Leal’s creative fires. She is most inspired by the xeric specimens found in the Sonoran and Chihuahua deserts as well as throughout the southwestern United States. Early in her pastel painting journey, she did a painting of an agave in her garden. It was the first painting she entered in a juried show and not only was the painting juried into the show, it was also awarded a prize. It confirmed that when one is passionate about the subjects they paint, the sentiment comes through to the viewer. When asked which is her favorite between cacti, succulents, aloe and agave, she says “My heart is with the agave. I am moved by the stateliness of the agave and the seemingly endless variations in size, colors and shapes. I enjoy the colorful and dangerous beauty of cactus, the undulation of the agave leaf imprinted by the now unfurled leaf, and the poignant swan song beauty of the agave flower. But, on the opposite end of the spectrum I am also enamored with tropical flowers particularly those in Hawaii and Costa Rica.”

Anna Lisa was born in Laredo which lies on the border of Texas and Mexico. There, her father planted many fruit trees including tangerine, orange, lime, peach and fig. She spent many of her days playing under and in the tangerine trees in the backyard of her home. She also spent hours drawing in the shade of the trees where her mother set her up with a drawing pad as large as she was. Anna Lisa says she’s been a creative as long as she can remember - whether it was drawing, dancing or creating in other ways. She vividly remembers drawing through her high school years, and most often doing portraiture. Anna Lisa left Laredo at the age of 16 and moved to central Texas where she attended college at Texas State University in San Marcos. During college did figurative and portrait work in graphite, often drawing portraits on request to make a bit of money. Though she had artistic talent, she was coached to pursue “practical” studies over the creative world. As she delved into her scientific studies, Anna Lisa discovered a great aptitude in botany which was her first college course in biology. She was invited teach the lab portion of that course and did so for the remainder of her time at that campus. Following undergraduate school, she stayed in the Central Texas area and moved to Austin. She’s lived in and around Austin, Texas for over 30 years. Her studio is at her home in the Hill Country northwest of Austin adjacent to the Balcones Canyonlands Reserve.

Anna Lisa’s largest body of work is comprised of botanical subjects. She never thought much about why she gravitated to this genre other than her love of plants inherited from her mother, But there was much more to it. Anna Lisa’s undergraduate degree is in Clinical Laboratory Science, which includes looking through microscopes at various cells in the human body, as well as bacteria and the like. Much of this work is about pattern and morphology recognition. About 20 years later someone contacted her about her current artwork. This individual knew her in college when she taught the laboratory portion of freshman biology – Botany. This encounter led to her to recall her aptitude in botanical science.

She realized over time the two science loves blended together and thus grew her fascination with the natural beauty and pattern of nature.

“I am entranced by Fibonacci spirals found in nature and echoed in phyllotaxy— the pattern in which leaves are arranged on plants in order to maximize the sunlight they receive.The placement of those leaves is about the scientific efficiency of nature – plants chasing light. I just imitate nature and attempt chasing light in art.”

Though she is strong in the sciences, Anna Lisa’s work is not that of a purist in scientific botanical illustration. Her work leans to the contemporary version of botanical art focusing on color and pattern and as she says “chasing light.” When she painted that first agave in her garden, she fell in love with the process. She says she imagined herself as a bug or lizard walking along the inner cupping or hollows in the leaves. Only later during a trip to Big Bend National Park during a drive along the Rio Grande River, did Anna Lisa realize why she so loved xeric subjects. She grew up on the Texas/Mexico border near the Chihuahua desert of Mexico. She was simply drawing her home.

Like many artists, Anna Lisa is gifted with a certain degree of innate talent.

Though she didn’t formally study art as a degree path, she’s never truly left her art. The time she had to devote to art has waxed and waned over the years. There was more waning while she focused on her early career in healthcare and ultimately the software industry. But as her corporate career arrived at a comfortable place, she was able to return more fully to her art. She was introduced to pastels when her sister asked her to come along to a half day pastel workshop given by an artist who’s work her sister had viewed at a Pastel Society of New Mexico show. “I begrudgingly went to the pastel class sure I would not like it. So, naturally, here I am many years later still working in pastel.” Anna Lisa has honed her talents through numerous workshops with nationally and internationally known pastel artists.

Her consulting skills give her the ability to listen to a collector’s desires when commissioning an artwork and she then turn those desires into reality. The skills of project management give her the ability to organize her time, work, and shows to successful outcomes. Her role as a director/manager provided the experience in managing a successful business. Finally experience in the software industry in general have been beneficial with the technology aspects of the art business such as website and social media management. Her clients and galleries have frequently said it’s refreshing to meet an artist that is both left and right brained – talented in the creative arts and skillful in business dealings.

She also attends the International Association of Pastel Societies biannual convention where there are many other learning opportunities as well.

Through many workshops, she has picked up various aspects in the techniques that resonated with her. There are many phases in developing a technique from preparing the substrate to application of the medium.

For supports, she went through stages in the types techniques applied.

This includes pastel/alcohol washes on untoned papers, commercially prepared colored papers, and adding liquid acrylic metallics. She then moved to working on board and applying her own textures and exploring pumice and micaceous iron oxide. She’s created high texture backgrounds as well as used tinted pumice and different tools for application. In terms of pastel application she does follow some level of fundamentals such as applying darks first and also likes to add lightest values early as well. With those markers in place, she says “I go where the painting takes me. I don’t work top down or right to left or any particular pattern. I let the painting speak to me and tell me where I should work.”

As it relates to the road to becoming a successful artist, it isn’t the only road she’s traveled. She’s had two very different career paths not including her art. Her education and first career was in Clinical Laboratory Science and Healthcare Administration. In this field of study, she most enjoyed the visual work requiring a microscope like Hematology (the study of blood cells), Microbiology (Bacteria, fungi etc) and Blood Banking.

She believes the appeal of the microscopic aspects in science is about her attraction to pattern. Her second career took her into the software industry. After participating in the installation of several Laboratory Information Software systems, she found she had affinity for that type of work since logic and pattern recognition are part of setup. Eventually, she left the direct healthcare delivery system for a software vendor where she became a consultant and PMI certified project manager and finally

The techniques Anna Lisa has developed over time have garnered her recognition by the esteemed Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Research Center where her work was on the Wildflower Days poster in 2016. She has also won numerous awards from Best of Show to Honorable Mentions in various juried pastel events. Her work has been accepted in many national and international level juried events that draw thousands of entries. She was selected Best in Category at the 49th Rockport Arts Festival. In 2021 she is featured as one of 12 artists to collect in Texas “Faded Glory” 32x32

by Southwest Art Magazine. She was interviewed by Voyage Dallas Magazine in 2018 and in 2017 in the Jan/Feb edition of Artists on Art Magazine for an article titled “The Educational Road to Becoming a Successful Artist”. “My goal is to bring an appreciation for the beauty of the patterns in nature. I hope to encourage people to bring the beauty of the garden to indoor living spaces.“ Anna Lisa is a member of the Pastel Society of America, Austin Pastel Society, Pastel Society of Central Texas, and is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico. In the Spring and Fall you can find Anna Lisa’s work at many art festivals in Texas. Art Gallery Prudencia in San Antonio, TX represents her work on a full time basis.

As these hot summer days continue on, I can’t help but think of cooler days ahead. The first real chill from an October northern across the cedar trees in the hill country, Aoudad sheep bounding off mountain faces out in Marfa, Pronghorn season getting underway in the open pastures near Amarillo, the opening day of Texas Whitetail season, and large Mule deer bucks appearing from their greasewood hideouts as rut gets underway. As hunting season draws nearer, I wanted to take a moment to give some of my reflections and projections of Native & Exotic game hunting here in Texas for our Texas Ranch Journal readers, almost as if we were in a hunting camp out in Brewster county, talking and discussing, “From the Campfire”.

TEXAS FREEZE OF 2021 Back in February, Texas was rocked if you will (as you all well know) by the horrific winter storm Uri. Among many issues that sprung from this storm, Texas ranchers and wildlife managers battled several issues with their livestock and wildlife.

Although, there is probably ten or more articles I could write on this subject alone, I am going to hit on one particular topic for now, and that is Axis deer.

From our company experience with the ranches we work with and the hunts we have ran so far this summer cycle, exotics took a major blow from this storm. During and after the freeze, we found several Axis dead from the storms wrath trying to get out of the freezing temps and the moisture.

Axis deer (like many exotic game) can not handle the cold as well as our Whitetail deer for example. A lot of the issue, was that many Axis could not get ample cover from the snow. So those Axis that were in more open range areas, were the most susceptible. Many of the deer suffered from hypothermia causing them not to be able to digest their food properly and thus changed the temperature of bacteria in their stomachs. The deer that were strong enough to survive had to battle pneumonia for several weeks and the bucks, were dealing with the effects of frostbite.

During an important time of year, axis bucks that had lost their horns back in November/December were in an important phase of their horn regrowth when Uri hit. Some bucks got frost bite at their pedicles, some lost brow tines, some grew funky horns, some bucks that were near grown out or half way, got entire frost bite in their horns causing them to turn black and essentially rot off. Although, we as a company have taken many great Axis bucks this summer with minimal or no horn damage, we have seen several many mature Axis bucks that are missing points, horns, or have some funky-ness to their shape. The bright side to this coin is that these bucks in particular that are of mature age and are missing these points/horns, only insures that they will get through this year and become much larger next year. Just because these bucks suffered frost bite from this past February to their horns, doesn’t mean it will be an issue for next years horn growth. The frost bite only affected the blood flow into the Axis bucks horns, not into his skull. That calculates to more mature and larger bucks to be harvested in 2022!

TEXAS HUNTING FORECAST FALL/WINTER 2021

Looking forward to the fall/winter hunting season, I am very optimistic for all our native & exotic hunters across the state. The reason is simply from the amount of rainfall we have been receiving throughout many areas of the state. In the areas we mainly operate (south Texas, Trans Pecos, hill country, and panhandle) we have received ample amounts of much needed rainfall at the right time of year which translates to cover for new born fawns, turkey poults being born, Whitetail bucks continuing growing their horns, plenty of natural groceries for our many species of exotics, and so on. You can feed all the protein in the world, but there is no substitute to God’s given rain and the natural browse/forbs that is provided with it. Again, this is a projection, but it is my professional opinion that when rain is provided like we have been getting, Texas will experience an above average hunting season with great trophies being produced from all across this great state. Timely rains = Success for all Texas ranches.

History: Pat Garrett, John Garner, and Horse Racing in Uvalde, Texas By: Zac Kerbow - Texas Ranch Sales Associate Broker

Over the years, there have been many famous people to visit Rocksprings, Texas, that sleepy ranching town turned hunting mecca that hangs on the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau. There was Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert who parked their forty foot motorhome on the courthouse square while they looked to buy a ranch in the area. Ranch real estate guru Ed White took them out; he didn’t know they were famous until one of his secretaries told him later that day. Earl Campbell sat in a local diner a few years ago after hunting in the area, while similarly, Ted Nugent’s photo is proudly displayed in the local feed store, showing the rocker with a local rancher. With all those visits being in the last 10-20 years or so, it is hard to imagine that Rocksprings had its largest celebrities over 120 years ago. One was famous for killing the most notorious outlaw of the time, and the other would become vice president of the United States. Perhaps you have heard of Pat Garrett and John Nance Garner. Well in 1895 they decsended on the humble ranching community and fleeced the locals in a historic horse race.

The legendary lawman and the eager attorney supposedly met over a poker table in a Uvalde saloon. Both men were known to enjoy a friendly wager and seemed to have immediately hit it off. While Garrett had already been made a national celebrity for his killing of Billy the Kid in New Mexico, the young Mr. Garner was a young, up and coming lawyer just beginning to make his mark. Garner had come to Uvalde to benefit from the arid climate, being better for his lungs and the tuberculosis that threatened him. At the time of their meeting Garner was a junior circuit rider, working legal cases across a 200 mile territory with little grandeur and many miles horseback. The older Garrett was chasing another rabbitt in the brush of fortune as he sought to build a horseracing empire on the Nueces. There was a mile long race track at the Uvalde fairgrounds and Garrett set up his own stables not far away. The two men became friends and would often bet the horses together, with Garrett even naming two horses after the future congressman.

Meanwhile, 60 miles north, the community of Rocksprings had recently mounted a successful coup for the county seat over nearby Leakey. So contentious was the vote that an armed escort was required to transport county records (Real County would later be formed so Leakey wouldn’t feel so bad.) These local hardened residents had their own beliefs on the quality of their horses. Local ranchers and homesteaders would divert themeseslves with barbeque, barn dances and match races, with families all loading up and bringing their best quarter horse to the town track or just setting the races down a flat patch of dirt. After a time it was known who would bring the fastest horses. One of the more successful breeders was the Thurman family living down on the West Prong of the Nueces River. They were known to be willing to bet against any and all challengers.

As horseraces were seen as a diversion to some, the speculation of horses was also seen has a means of making your livelihood. And so it was on a summer day in 1895 a horse was stabled at a local livery and its owner began to make the rounds. He was looking to match his mare, Betty Connors, against the best the blossomming community had to offer. He found his match in a horse named Gulliver, owned by the Thurmans. The dates and terms were fixed and in a few months time, Rocksprings would host the social highlight of the season. Word soon spread that the visiting animal was under the ownership of famous New Mexico lawman, Pat Garrett. While races were a common, weekly fixture, when someone with the recognition of Garrett comes to town, it becomes an event.

The challenge of handicapping these match races was always a difficult one. While you knew how fast your horse was there wasn’t much information that could be obtained on a horse you’d never seen run. As opposed to the present day parimutual races where odds are established by the bets actually placed and payouts based on the amount of money in the pot, these bettors would have tried to find an oddsmaker that gave them the best odds for their bet.

So, while the Thurmans and many of the surrounding ranchmen new the speed of Gulliver, they knew very little of the Garrett horse, Betty Connors.

Thousands of people would have gathered around the old fairgrounds, pitching tents around the race track days in advance of the race.

From what has been recorded the two horses were equally matched with bets being evenly placed on either horse. It wasn’t until the day of the race that the newly elected Uvalde County Judge, John Garner, rode into town in a buckboard buggy. Sometime in the afternoon of the big race, Judge Garner stood up on his buggy and offered all bettors 2 to 1 odds in favor of Garrett’s Betty Connors. Perhaps the local Rocksprings folks could hardly believe the fortune of betting on Gulliver with such favorable odds, or more likely, they realized this fiery little lawyer had some inside information. While the pride of the Rocksprings folk would have encouraged a bet for Gulliver, it would have been hard to discount the certainty of the future vice president.

But as pride and stubborness go, well these men wouldn’t be where they were without it.

With much anticipation, the two horses lined up to race the typical 400 yards of a quarter horse race. The spectators would most likely have stood along the rail, on wagons or on top of the highest spot they could find. As the horses raced for the finish line there must have been audible groans and perhaps some cursing as Garrett’s horse finished ahead by three lengths.

Now the jovial judge was back atop his buggy without having to payout much, taking the locals money and descending down the hill, through the canyon and home to Uvalde. He had probably made as much that day as he would in a year on his judge’s salary.

Garrett would have been a considerable winner as well, and one can imagine the back slapping that must have gone on back in a Uvalde saloon. Unfortunately his luck must not have lasted as he is quoted as writing, “There is no chance in the world to make a dollar in Uvalde.”

Garner didn’t share the sentiment and went on to become one of the largest landowners in Uvalde County, also operating a newspaper, title company, with various interests in many other enterprises. His election as a US Congressman, Speaker of the House, and eventually Vice President of the United States might just solidify him as the most famous visitor to Rocksprings, Tx

Strategic Planning for Managing the Unwanted Neighbor 50

Land ownership trends over the last decade have been very dynamic, to say the least, with many new rural landowners coming from urban settings. These landowners quickly find themselves at a decision-making crossroads as they learn about land stewardship and best management plans. With any good plan, one must start with realistic goals for the property and work backward.

In learning about stewardship, the damage and conservation challenges caused by non-native invasive species are evident. The most notorious nonnative invasive on the Texas landscape is the wild pig (Sus scrofa), with an expanding population and impacts ranging from hundreds of millions in crop damage to native habitat degradation.

A strategic mitigation effort to remove wild pigs from your land should start with data collection. You must understand your current situation before you establish land management goals and a best management plan. Due to the nomadic tendencies of wild pigs and large family (“sounder”) ranges, game cameras are the quickest and easiest way to conquer this task. Such cameras positioned on game trails, food sources, water sources, or scent stations can collect sufficient data to devise an approach for resident wild pig management. You’ll quickly learn the number of pigs and size of sounders using your property. You might even be able to identify individuals based on coat patterns. You can also witness sounder dynamics, better understand where they travel, favorite food sources, and see any non-target species in the area.

Essential data points from your game camera data are the number of pigs and sizes of the sounders. When scouting specifically for wild pig sounders, you will need to set the camera to allow the manager to determine the color of wild pigs after dark. This setting will likely require a relatively technical camera with no flash or a less expensive option requiring a flash. The color of pigs in a sounder can help you identify the number and size based on the individuals’ physical appearance (color) in the group. Managers can also determine an individual’s or group’s overall health, indicating the potential for successful management. Thin wild pigs are a good indicator of a diminishing landscape function, thus less food availability, increasing the probability of successful trapping efforts.

Sounder dynamics are one often overlooked aspect of wild pig management.

This oversight quickly pushes a well-meaning control plan into the meaningless category. To hold localized wild pig populations stable, managers must remove a minimum of 70% of the population annually. The only path to this math is to use an integrated pest management plan with trapping at its core.

It is critical to know the dynamics and number of sounders in your area, the individual number of wild pigs in each sounder, and the number of lone boars in the area.

The strength of a sounder is in the number of individuals within. On any given landscape, there will likely be multiple sounders overlapping in the use of available resources. There will be a single dominant sounder with varying insubordinate sounders, each led by a dominant female. Trapping efforts may require multiple traps in a single location to remove the occupying sounders quickly. Wild pigs are creatures of habit. Sounders will develop a typical pattern that lends itself to trap sites for mitigation efforts. Managers should focus on one location for trapping, staying close to the area where the dominant sounder most frequently visits while potentially adding sites to trap insubordinate sounders. If this is not a possibility, managers will then need to identify a location that best covers the area of overlapping sounders with a trap that will allow the catch of multiple sounders in a single catch event. Many trapping options only catch the first visiting sounder. This trap style educates subsequent visiting sounders to the trap location and removal efforts. Trapping can be further complicated when attempting to remove boars as they are typically solitary and encounter traps only after the initial capture.

Adding to the discussion of sounder dynamics are the individuals that make up the sounder. Managers must closely assess camera images, specifically looking for any small piglets in the sounder. The presence of small pigs in a sounder will tell the manager that they should expedite the removal effort. Sows with small piglets will be highly nomadic as a predatory response. Predators seek out small piglets as a relatively easy food source, and sows keeping piglets in an area for a prolonged time will allow predators to home in on sounders and feed on these young individuals. Once pigs reach weaning, they are typically large enough to thwart the efforts of native predators. Young sows may take a litter or two to figure this out.

Many well-intentioned wild pig management plans are rendered useless because managers did not use data collected on non-target species occupying the landscape. Raccoons, deer, squirrels, and flocking birds pose the highest probability of spoiling trapping efforts due to the manager incorrectly using the data. Conventional trapping efforts use a catch gate and manual trigger that the wild pigs must trip. Unfortunately, non-target species do the same if the selection of a trigger is not considered. If deer are the non-target concern, trip strings will not work. Trip strings, however, are the correct choice for a trigger if your concern is raccoons. Strings of any type are unsuitable if flocking birds (like Blackbirds) or squirrels will perch or walk on your string and impact your success. High populations of predatory animals, such as coyotes and bobcats, can cause wild pigs to be almost perpetually on the move.

Food sources in a landscape will always be in a temporary state. Farmers will harvest crops, and hardwoods will drop mast crop in the fall. These are examples of changes that will dictate travel patterns for wild pigs throughout the year. The location and abundance of a food source will determine travel patterns and the length of time pigs will be in an area. It is critical to decide when you have decreasing or low nutritional availability on your landscape. During such times, the probability of trapping success will increase. The best trapping times of the year are from December/ January to bud break in the spring and during the summer heat when conditions are typically under drought stress.

Managers who successfully control their wild pig populations and develop a sound integrated management approach are focused on the initial phases of scouting, data collection, and analysis. While not the most exciting task, detailed data collection will help determine the most appropriate equipment, the best time to capture, and most importantly, how many sounders are remaining on the landscape. This base knowledge will set a bigger plan in motion, including decisions about pre-baiting, baiting, and program duration.

Let me set the stage for my worst moment in cattle working history…I was probably around ten years old. It’s a sweaty Saturday, pushing up on lunchtime, in the Texas Hill Country. We’d already worked all the cows and calves for that particular morning and only one thing remained…the bull. Now my parents aren’t rope and drag kind of ranchers. There were no horses or cowboys. They had a hand-welded chute system that was typical of 1960s cow size. One snag…in the late 80s/early 90s we were still in the “frame race” (trying breed leggy cattle). Towering meat wagons were in style, thus cattle had outgrown the head gate and squeeze chute my parents designed. In typical southern engineering/redneck style, they adapted.

We just put them down the chute portion, running a pipe behind them, across the chute, so that they couldn’t back out.

Don’t laugh, the money tree didn’t put on new leaves that year.

I had ONE JOB. Stay up against the barn with my mother and when the bull ran down the chute, slide that pipe in behind him so he couldn’t back out. Simple enough, right?

I could hear the bull coming up through the pens and my father clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth, easing him along. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a mouse. Mice are everywhere around a barn and our most recent barn cat had fallen victim to one of two things: a coyote or it found it didn’t have to work as hard for it’s food at a neighboring farm. No matter the reason, we had a nice population of mice and I thought I should help my parents and catch this mouse. I could do both at the same time, the bull was still far enough away.

I sat down the pipe that was supposed to go behind the bull and grabbed another pipe and thought “if I just get the mouse trapped in the bottom of a pipe, I can hold it there and then Dad could kill it when he’s done getting the bull in the chute”. Makes total sense… insert eye-roll. I wait for my moment of glory, just knowing the pride my parents will feel when I managed to capture this mouse and put the pipe in behind the bull. The mouse goes right where I think he will and BOOM, I tip up the pipe and catch it, heck yeah!

One tiny little portion of this “feat of genius” I hadn’t planned on… that mouse could climb. I heard the bull getting closer, I grabbed the pipe that was to go behind him with my right hand and my left hand held the pipe on the mouse. All of a sudden, the mouse popped out onto my hand, runs up my arm onto my shoulder. I dropped the pipe in my right hand, threw the pipe in my left hand, flung the mouse off me and screamed bloody murder, all at the exact time the bull started coming down the alley.

The 2,300 pound bull promptly turned back on my Dad and started to run at him.

Like a rodeo cowboy, my father was over a five foot welded wire gate and safely to the other side in an athletic stunt that is generally only seen on ESPN highlights.

Mom turns and said words to me. I did not comprehend them, as I know the wrath of my father is coming. That’s it, I knew at that moment, that barn is where I was going to die. I made it to pre-teen, that was a good life. He was going to kill me and probably just bury me out back.

At the least, I was going to get a serious whipping. My father came around the corner and his eyes were huge…I’ve accepted my fate, so of course, I was crying, knowing that is where it all ends. “What, what was going on?!” he hollered.

Through tears I told him my “genius plan” and that I just didn’t know the mouse would come up the pipe.

His furrowed brow softened a little, I received a scolding, a lesson in safety, and that I had awesome parents…as in hindsight, I would have killed a kid! Dad walked away chuckling and shaking his head.

From then on, I was a large supporter of the barn cat and using the double mouse trap along the wall method of catching a rodent.
