In March 2026, the national organizations rolled out the framework at the Pork Forum in Kansas City. The goal of this strategy is to roll out a national strategy to eradicate endemic diseases, like PRRS and PEDv, while preventing emerging diseases like ASF from getting into the US. The National Pork Board has put together a nice visual summary of the plan. TPPA will work closely with the national team, other 10

NPPC Leads 330 Groups in Asking for Prop. 12 Fix as Senate Farm Bill Discussion Draft is Released The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) recently led a coalition of more than 330 agricultural organizations in urging Senate Agriculture Committee leaders to include a fix for California Proposition 12 in the final 2026 Farm Bill.

While Senate Agriculture

Committee Chairman John Boozman’s recently released discussion draft included several priorities supported by NPPC, including funding for the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan, it did not contain a fix for

Proposition 12. NPPC leaders emphasized that without federal action, pork producers will continue facing a growing patchwork of state animal housing regulations that create uncertainty and additional costs for farmers.

The organization noted that a legislative fix has received bipartisan support and pledged to continue advocating for producers throughout the Farm Bill process. NPPC also thanked several senators for their continued support of U.S. pork producers and their efforts to secure Proposition 12 relief.

Rep. Thompson Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Overhaul H-2A Visa Program

Representative Glenn “GT” Thompson recently introduced the bipartisan Securing Agriculture’s Workforce Act of 2026, legislation designed to modernize the H-2A

agricultural guest worker program for the first time in nearly 40 years. The bill would expand eligibility to yearround agricultural industries, including pork production, while also streamlining the application process and reducing labor-related costs for employers. Additional provisions would establish an internet-based application portal, create multi-year housing certifications, and provide greater stability in farmworker wage rates.

Supporters say the legislation would help address ongoing labor shortages facing agriculture and provide producers with access to a more reliable workforce. The bill has received support from more than 400 agricultural organizations, including the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), which noted that expanding H-2A access to year-round agriculture is a critical step in strengthening the future of U.S. pork production.

Quarterly Review and Outlook

The National Pork Board’s latest Quarterly Review and Outlook highlighted a cautiously optimistic outlook for the pork industry in 2026.

Current forecasts project U.S. pork production to increase by approximately 1.2% from last year, with overall supplies expected to remain relatively stable. While producers continue to face elevated production costs, market analysts noted that profitability is gradually improving as the 11

New World Screwworm: What TPPA is doing to help swine producers

In late May, the House Agriculture Even though Congress passed a 1-year extension to the 2018 Farm Bill in the last few minutes before adjournment, it fails to address the problems created

by California’s Proposition 12. Prop 12, which took effect Jan. 1, 2024, and has increased pork production operating costs, created business uncertainty and raised consumer pork prices.

California’s retail pork prices are anywhere from 21% to 40%, which is higher than the national average.

Pork producers are finally coming out of a nearly 2-year long period where the cost

of production was higher than the value of the pigs produced. Futures show promise for a positive market in 2025. However, by not passing a new Farm Bill, congress has made it tough for producers to be fully assured there will be adequate funding to assist if their fragile market and razor thin margins were to collapse in 2025.and adds fuel to the economic engine of our great state.

TPPA will continue to have a voice in Austin and work towards a profitable and sustainable pork industry.

USDA Invests in Projects to Strengthen New World Screwworm Preparedness and Response

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced approximately $105 million in funding for 40 projects aimed at strengthening the nation’s preparedness and response efforts against New World screwworm (NWS). Funded through USDA’s New World Screwworm Grand Challenge, the projects will focus on improving detection methods, enhancing sterile fly production, developing new treatments and control strategies, and strengthening rapid-response capabilities.

USDA officials noted that the selected projects represent

innovative, science-based approaches designed to protect livestock and prevent further spread of the pest. The investments build upon USDA’s broader efforts to combat New World screwworm and safeguard U.S. animal agriculture.

Several universities and research institutions across the country, including partners in Texas, received funding to support these efforts. USDA emphasized that continued research, surveillance, and collaboration will be critical to protecting producers and maintaining the health of the nation’s livestock industry.

To qualify, applicants must complete the New World Screwworm Preparedness and Response Education course and pass a final exam with a score of 94% or higher. State officials believe expanding the network of certified inspectors will improve surveillance efforts and strengthen Texas’s ability to respond quickly to potential NWS cases.

New World Screwworm Certified Inspector Program The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC), in partnership with Texas A&M AgriLife, has developed a New World Screwworm (NWS) Certified Inspector Program to strengthen the state’s preparedness and response efforts. The program is designed to expand the number of trained individuals qualified to inspect livestock and issue NWS Treatment/ Movement Certificates.

Current participants in the Texas Authorized Personnel Program (TAPP) already meet the eligibility requirements, while additional individuals, 15

In addition to consumers, we look to add value and build trust within our commercial swine sector through our advocacy in both Austin and Washington D.C. They need to ensure their ability to ship pigs out of state,

ith the primary and runoff elections now concluded for both parties, the November 3, 2026 general election is coming into sharper focus. This update summarizes notable primary and runoff results, previews key general election dynamics, and outlines interim legislative issues important to the Texas pork industry.

ELECTION LANDSCAPE While the incumbent Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House each won their primaries without a runoff, several statewide incumbents were defeated in runoff contests: • Senator John Cornyn lost to Attorney General Ken Paxton.

• Comptroller Kelly Hancock lost to businessman and former State Senator Don Huffines.

• Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller lost to businessman Nate Sheets.

• Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright lost to Republican activist and businessman Bo French.

CONGRESSIONAL AND LEGISLATIVE RACES In U.S. House races, the central question is whether Republicans can hold recently won seats in South Texas and the suburbs of larger cities. Last session, the Texas Legislature completed a contentious mid-census redistricting process intended to add five seats to the Republican majority in Congress. However,

higher-than-expected inflation, rising living costs, and other factors could make some of those seats more competitive.

The Texas Senate is expected to remain stable, with 18 Republicans, 12 Democrats, and one vacant seat likely to remain Republican.

Texas House races follow a similar pattern to the U.S. House, with Republicans working to defend gains made last cycle in South Texas and select suburban districts. With the runoffs complete, candidates in contested races are shifting their attention and resources toward the opposing party and the November electorate.

INTERIM LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES Several interim legislative issues are already emerging as priorities for the Texas pork industry. Key topics include property taxes, water, and the New World Screwworm. Interim hearings are underway in Austin, and legislation is likely to develop from those discussions.

OUTLOOK As the interim continues and the November general election approaches, the issues and candidates will come into clearer focus. The Texas pork industry, and agriculture more broadly, can expect a productive legislative session, even as producers continue to face higher input costs, workforce challenges, and other pressures.

Overall, the Texas Legislature understands what is required to produce food and fiber for the state. Texas Pork Producers will continue keeping lawmakers informed on issues important to the industry.

PROPERTY TAXES Property taxes remain a major focus for both chambers of the Texas Legislature.

Lawmakers are expected to pursue additional relief for homeowners, potentially through a higher homestead exemption, a lower age threshold for the senior homestead exemption and tax ceiling, or state-funded property tax compression.

WATER Water has been a Texas priority since Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock and the Legislature passed SB 1 in 1997. Since then, the state has made significant progress in planning, funding, workforce commitments, and resource protection.

Today, one of the largest water-related concerns in Austin is the volume needed to support data centers that power artificial intelligence operations across Texas. The state’s response will be critical because water affects every part of daily life and the broader Texas economy.

NEW WORLD SCREWWORM The New World Screwworm (NWS) is another key issue for the Texas pork industry.

As of this writing, NWS has been limited to Southwest Texas. USDA and the State of Texas are working aggressively to contain the fly’s

1. Who Is Responsible for Paying the Pork Checkoff • The producer (seller of the pig) is responsible for paying the Pork Checkoff.

• Applies to youth exhibitors, commercial producers and show pig sellers.

• Collecting agents include fair boards, auction barns and sale companies.

• The checkoff is deducted from sale proceeds before payment to the seller.

Example: A pig sells for $1,500 Pork Checkoff = $1,500 × 0.0035 = $5.25 Seller receives: $1,494.75

2. How the Pork Checkoff Is Collected • Calculated at 0.0035 (0.35%) of each pig sale.

• Collected at fairs, auctions and show pig sales.

• Withheld from seller proceeds and recorded per transaction.

• Sale reports should include totals and seller details.

• Funds should be clearly tracked and identifiable.

3. How the Pork Checkoff Is Remitted • Complete the Pork Checkoff remittance online or by mail: porkcheckoff.org/pay-pork-checkoff-remittance/ • Submit payment to the National Pork Board.

• Due by the 15th of the month following the sale.

• Include total sales and checkoff collected.

4. Responsibilities by Type of Event County Fairs: Fair boards collect and remit checkoff for all exhibitors.

Livestock Auctions: Auction barns calculate, collect and report transactions.

Show Pig Sales: Sale companies collect and report across consignors.

5. Handling Changes in Leadership or Management • The organization conducting the sale remains responsible.

• Outgoing personnel must provide financial records.

• Incoming personnel must verify and submit payments if needed.

• Notify your state pork association of any changes.

6. Risk Scenarios and Compliance • Unreported sales and unpaid funds are risks.

• Risk increases with leadership changes or poor recordkeeping.

• Best practices include reconciliation and accurate reporting.

MEET OUR NEW CONSUMER MARKETING SPECIALIST

LAURA JIMENEZ G

rowing up in Lakeway, Texas, some of my favorite memories were visiting my grandparents’ ranch in Mexico. Whether I was helping with cattle, pigs, or chickens, those experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for agriculture and the people who dedicate their lives to it. Watching their commitment to raise livestock inspired me from a young age to build a career serving farmers and ranchers like my grandparents — the people who make our food system possible.

That passion continued through my involvement in FFA, where I competed in livestock judging and exhibited goats. I went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Texas A&M University. Together, these experiences provided me with a strong foundation in animal agriculture, consumer demand, and data-driven marketing strategies. Understanding both the producer and consumer sides of agriculture has given me valuable insight into how effective marketing can create opportunities for farmers and ranchers while strengthening consumer confidence in agricultural products.

While attending Texas Tech, I met my fiancé, Christian. We recently got engaged during a trip to Thailand and share a passion for travel, food, and experiencing agriculture around the world.

We enjoy learning about agricultural industries in different countries, and especially how other cultures incorporate pork into their culinary traditions.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work across several sectors of the agricultural industry.

My professional experiences include positions with Buckhead Meat & Seafood, the Texas Capitol’s Committee on Water, Agriculture, and Rural Affairs, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA), the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, and the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

At NASDA, I worked extensively in international trade promotion and agricultural marketing. I helped

organize food trade shows in Miami, Chicago, and Las Vegas, where I conducted market research and developed marketing materials to help agricultural businesses expand into international markets. I collaborated with state departments of agriculture, commodity organizations, food service companies, and industry partners to promote U.S. agricultural products around the world.

One of the most impactful experiences of my career was serving at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru, with the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. While there, I worked closely with the U.S. Meat Export Federation on initiatives aimed at increasing consumer demand for U.S. meat products. During my time in Peru, I authored the USDA GAIN Report, “The Overlooked Consumer of Affordable Meat Products.”

My research took me into some of Peru’s largest wet markets, where I studied consumer purchasing behavior and interviewed butchers, importers, and industry professionals. I also supported consumer education programs focused on increasing confidence in preparing and cooking red meat. These experiences allowed me to see firsthand how strategic marketing and consumer outreach can create new opportunities for producers while building trust with consumers.

That is what excites me most about serving as Consumer Marketing Specialist for the Texas Pork Producers Association. Texas is home to a rich and diverse culinary heritage, and pork plays a central role in many of the flavors Texans know and love. I am excited to help Texans rediscover their love for pork by highlighting its exceptional taste, versatility, value, and ease of preparation.

Most importantly, I am honored to serve the farmers and ranchers who make our industry possible. I look forward to creating new opportunities for pork producers and showcasing the quality and tradition behind Texas pork.

NEW WORLD SCREWWORM:

WHAT TPPA IS DOING TO HELP SWINE PRODUCERS

ack in June of 2025, the Texas Pork Producers Association (TPPA) was made aware of the movement of New World Screwworm (NWS) into central Mexico. At the time, the experts predicted that NWS would make it to the U.S. southern border by October.

TPPA partnered with other barnyard associations to create the Texas NWS Industry Coalition. We committed to a weekly call with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) to better understand the northern movement and work on preparing for the worst.

Luckily, the quick action and added funding from USDA along with Mexico’s cooperation, slowed movement so we were able to get to winter and allow the colder weather to slow the fly even more. The very effective and targeted use of the limited number of sterile flies out of Panama and the closure of the southern border to livestock imports and immigration slowed movement of the fly to the southern boarder until May of this year.

Unfortunately, without the necessary volume of sterile flies needed to properly reverse the NWS fly migration, Texas broke with its first case on June 3, 2026.

Because the U.S. did not break with NWS until June, USDA was able to complete and fully vet the NWS playbook that is being used to combat the infestation in Texas today. This playbook is

the game plan on how everything works under this emergency. USDA worked closely with our coalition to make sure the industry could continue to provide commerce and not have another COVID event again.

The association has created a NWS swine resources page on the TPPA website for both producers and show pig families to utilize to better protect their pigs. TPPA is working closely with other key pig states to ensure there is no issue with interstate movement of pigs to and from Texas. This is not just in the commercial industry but also in the busy upcoming summer and fall show pig sale season.

TPPA continues to be on the daily and weekly calls ensuring that swine producer’s voices and needs are heard. TPPA stands ready to engage and advocate whenever and wherever needed as Texas combats this pest and pushes it back across the border and back to South America.

NATIONAL SWINE HEALTH STRATEGY: A ROADMAP TO HEALTHIER HERDS Producer-driven priorities, proven tools and layered biosecurity practices are helping chart the course for a stronger, more resilient U.S. swine industry. by the National Pork Board

wine health isn’t optional. It’s critical to your operation and the future success of the industry.

This year, Texas producers have seen firsthand why swine health preparedness matters. Recent pseudorabies detections associated with feral swine and the ongoing response to New World screwworm serve as reminders that protecting herd health requires constant vigilance and strong biosecurity practices. While disease threats may change, the need for prevention, preparedness and rapid response remains the same.

That’s why the Pork Checkoff, alongside industry partners, is advancing the National Swine Health Strategy (NSHS) — a coordinated, sciencebased approach to protecting herd health and staying ahead of what’s next. Built by producers, for producers, the strategy was shaped through input from more than 1,800 producers, veterinarians and industry

stakeholders and establishes a clear path forward around two key goals: • Reduce the impact of domestic diseases, including efforts to eliminate PRRSV and PEDV and reduce disease spread.

• Keep foreign and emerging diseases out through prevention, preparedness, monitoring and early detection.

TURNING STRATEGY INTO ACTION The Pork Checkoff’s swine health team is already prioritizing work to improve herd health across the industry, including: • Advancing efforts to eliminate PEDV through the US Swine Health Improvement Plan (US SHIP) PEDV Clean Certification and transportation biosecurity • Advancing efforts to eliminate PRRSV through

A KEY TOOL ON THE ROAD AHEAD One of the most important tools helping producers prepare for the road ahead is the Secure Pork Supply (SPS) Plan. The SPS Plan takes a proactive approach to disease preparedness by strengthening biosecurity, improving animal traceability and supporting early disease detection.

The plan provides step-by-step guidance to help producers prepare before a disease event occurs, define a line of separation, document biosecurity practices and support business continuity during an outbreak. The SPS Plan was recently updated to be more applicable to the show pig community, providing additional guidance that can be implemented across all types of swine operations.

LAYER PROTECTION EVERY DAY The National Swine Health Strategy emphasizes that strong biosecurity takes everyone, every day, using multiple layers of protection. Biosecurity is not one action — it’s a system of layered practices that work together to prevent disease entry, limit disease spread and reduce disease impact.

No single practice is enough. Effective biosecurity uses multiple overlapping safeguards to reduce risk. Strong internal practices protect your herd, neighboring farms and the entire pork industry.

Consistency is critical.

STAYING ON COURSE The road to stronger swine health starts on individual farms, but it doesn’t end there. The Pork Checkoff is investing in the research, tools and partnerships needed to help producers navigate today’s challenges and prepare for what’s ahead.

BREAKFAST SMASHED TACOS -½ lb breakfast sausage, loose -8 street taco tortillas -4 eggs -2 Tbsp mild cheddar cheese, shredded -1 Tbsp milk -As needed, cooking spray -To taste, salt and black pepper -1 avocado, sliced -¼ cup salsa (optional)

Preheat flat top grill to 400-450°F. Spread 1 ounce of sausage meat onto each of the tortillas.

Whisk eggs together with milk. Add cheese and season with salt and pepper.

Oil flat top with cooking spray and sear tortillas, sausage side down, until sausage is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F, about 2-3 minutes. Flip tortillas and sear to crisp slightly then remove from flat top. Oil flat top and scramble eggs then remove from flat top. Top the sausage side of each tortilla with scrambled egg, two slices of avocado, and half tablespoon of salsa if desired. Serve warm.

kid-friendly AIR FRYER PORK NUGGETS 1 pork tenderloin (16 oz) ½ cup buttermilk 1 egg 1 tsp paprika ½ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp + a pinch of salt (divided) ¼ tsp + a pinch of black pepper (divided) 1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs ½ cup traditional breadcrumbs 2 tbsp Italian seasoning 2 tbsp olive oil Cut pork into small bite-sized pieces; transfer pieces into a large bowl. Add buttermilk, egg, paprika, garlic powder, salt and black pepper.

Mix well to combine. Cover bowl and set aside to marinate for 1 hour or. Preheat oven to 400° F or an air fryer to 375° F. Once pork has marinated, place panko breadcrumbs, traditional breadcrumbs, Italian seasoning and olive oil in a large plastic freezer bag. Seal the bag shut; shake mixture well to combine.

Place pork pieces into the bag and reclose.

Shake thoroughly until pork pieces are fully coated. Carefully transfer pork pieces onto a parchment-lined baking sheet or air fryer basket. Repeat this step with remaining pork pieces until all pieces are coated. Cook pork nuggets for 20 minutes.

GRILLED PROSCIUTTO AND PEACH PIZZA -6 oz prosciutto, thinly sliced -1 lb prepared pizza dough -½ cup crushed tomatoes, canned -1 cloves garlic, minced -2 ea peaches, sliced into wedges -½ cup parmesan cheese, grated -8 oz burrata -2 cups arugula -1 tsp lemon juice -As needed extra virgin olive oil Allow pizza dough to rest at room temperature for 2 hours.

Preheat grill to 400-450°F. Combine crushed tomatoes and garlic. Set aside. Stretch pizza dough out to roughly an 18-inch oval that is 1/8inch thick. Place dough on a baking tray or cutting board to transfer to the grill.

Grill peaches for 2-3 minutes per side until they are lightly charred. Remove from grill and clean and oil grill.

Brush stretched pizza dough with olive oil. Place dough, oiled side down, onto grill. Close lid and grill for 2-3 minutes.

Brush ungrilled side of dough with oil and flip. Evenly spread crushed tomatoes across crust. Sprinkle with parmesan.

Break up burrata and distribute evenly across crust.

Once cheese has begun to melt and dough is slightly charred and cooked through, remove from grill.

Toss arugula with lemon juice and distribute over pizza. Decoratively place grilled peaches and tufts of prosciutto on top of arugula.

Slice and serve.

THE “CHOPTALK” CHALLENGE ENCOURAGING MORE PEOPLE TO EAT MORE PORK, MORE OFTEN.

he Texas Pork Producers Association (TPPA) recently welcomed the first cohort of participants in the inaugural ChopTalk Advocate Program, a new leadership and advocacy initiative in partnership with a grant from the National Pork Board. The program was designed to equip youth exhibitors with the skills and experiences needed to become influential voices for the pork industry.

The first session, a four-day short course, brought together 11 youth leaders from across Texas, including: Alaya Prado of Liberty Hill, Emma Perez of Sinton, Kenley Krohn of Lamesa, Kotton West of Taft, Madeline Rakowitz of Salado, Madison Hunzeker of McKinney, Malaina Baker of Blue Ridge, Reese Huffaker of Post, Reese Sagebiel of Fredericksburg, Sarah Albus of Hankamer, and Weston Lackey of Haskell.

The program was created to transform passionate young pork exhibitors into confident advocates who can help broaden knowledge

between pork production and consumers. The experience began in Austin with a welcome session focused on relationship building, leadership expectations, and an introduction to the role advocates play in shaping public perceptions of agriculture for the next two sessions. Participants quickly connected while preparing for a week of learning opportunities centered on the pork industry.

The first full day focused on understanding the broader pork industry and the importance of consumer engagement. Participants heard from industry leaders about the impact of pork production, the role of commercial producers, and why authentic storytelling is essential in today’s marketplace.

The group traveled to San Antonio, where they met with the H-E-B Wellness Team and participated in a hands-on culinary demonstration led by Chef Patrick Clark and Chef Matt Davis.

During the session, advocates prepared pork-based dishes while learning how retailers communicate

nutrition, convenience, and flavor to consumers.

Later that afternoon, participants explored pork nutrition, consumer perceptions, and common misconceptions surrounding the industry.

The day concluded with a visit to Southside Market & Barbeque, Texas’ oldest barbecue joint and sausage processor, giving participants a firsthand look at the connection between production agriculture and consumer food experiences.

Day three shifted the focus toward retail marketing and consumer behavior. Participants toured a San Antonio H-E-B store, where they examined meat case layouts, product labeling, merchandising strategies, and pork placement compared to competing proteins. Throughout the visit, advocates were challenged to think like marketers and identify opportunities to better connect with pork products.

Additional sessions explored H-E-B’s commitment to Texas-made products, current retail trends, and the evolving preferences of today’s consumers. Participants also learned about the unique pathway Texas show pigs take after the show ring through discussions on livestock marketing and pork processing.

One of the week’s most interactive activities challenged students to develop strategies for promoting pork to modern consumers. While hearing from the team with Texas Livestock Marketing Association, advocates analyzed existing marketing campaigns and explored ways to communicate the pork industry’s story to audiences beyond agriculture.

The fourth day highlighted the people and businesses that connect pork producers to consumers. Participants met with Julie Halfmann

of Prime Pork and Meats to learn about local pork production, processing logistics, and community engagement efforts.

The group then visited Green’s Sausage House in Zabcikville, where they enjoyed traditional Czech kolaches and fresh pork sausage while learning about the lasting influence of pork on the history and culture of Central Texas communities.

Later that afternoon, the advocates traveled to Churchrow Tejas BBQ in Austin for lunch, where they met pitmaster Miguel Vidal and explored the role of pork in authentic Texas barbecue.

As the week progressed, attention turned toward advocacy and communication. Through media training and storytelling workshops, participants practiced interviewing techniques, on-camera communication skills, and methods for translating their agricultural experiences into meaningful conversations with consumers. They also explored how advocacy skills can strengthen resumes, scholarship applications, leadership opportunities, and future careers.

The program concluded with a capstone project announcement in which participants team up to create communications materials over the following: Your Guide to Choosing, Cooking, and Loving Texas Pork, The Stories of Texas Pork, Uniquely Texas Pork: Culture Focused, and Pork Meals Made Easy for College Students.

The team will meet for their final session in Houston from October 18-21 to further their education and present their capstone projects.

The Texas Pork Producers Association is always honored to have the opportunity to invest in the next generation of industry leaders and ensure that authentic voices continue telling the story of pork production across Texas and beyond.

TEXAS PORK JUNIOR AMBASSADORS Over the course of two (2) years, junior ambassadors motivate and educate the youth of Texas while learning more about the swine industry. The goal of this program is to generate visible agricultural advocates through industry tours, development sessions, networking opportunities, and more. Ages 17-21 are welcome to apply from March 1 to May 1.

INTERNSHIPS TPPA offers summer internships for students continuing their education in the state of Texas. During the summer months, interns can assist with major association events related to the ambassador program, youth programs, and more. In addition, interns play a vital role in creating the largest issue of the year for the Producer Connection magazine. Applications are due by March 15th.

“CHOPTALK” ADVOCACY ACADEMY The Texas Pork “ChopTalk” Advocacy Academy helps young leaders build confidence in advocating for the pork industry beyond the show ring. Participants will develop communication and leadership skills, collaborate with Texas pork brands on consumer-focused projects, and explore career opportunities across agriculture and related industries.

Selected participants will attend two in-person sessions throughout the year and complete a capstone advocacy project.

TEXAS PORK LEADERSHIP CAMP Texas Pork Leadership Camp is an intense, progressive, and thought-provoking week, full of activities, tours, and presentations featuring all aspects of the pork production industry. Students will join TPPA staff for a week travelling to different businesses and operations. Camp is held every odd year for applicants must be between the ages of 16-18.

TEXAS PORK YOUTH RETREAT Texas Pork Youth Retreat, led by the Texas Pork Junior Ambassadors, allows youth to engage in all aspects of the pork industry, development activities, and of course, a whole lot of fun! This event is open to students grades 7th-12th who have an interest in the growing within the swine industry.

SCHOLARSHIPS For more than a decade, the Certified Texas Bred Registry has given back over $184,500 to Texas youth through scholarship programs. The Certified Texas Bred Registry aims to award more students who exhibit Texas-bred barrows and gilts.

This industry the meat animal evaluation team, and serve on has given me so many opportunities, and I hope the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) to spend my career giving back by helping the Student Board of Directors. These experiences next generation find the same opportunities that helped me develop leadership skills while I did. I am so very thankful to the TPPA staff and connecting me with an incredible network of peers producers across the state who made this summer and industry professionals. such a valuable experience.

This summer, interning with the Texas Pork Producers Association gave me a firsthand look at the industry beyond the show ring. Much of my time involved helping with youth programs, leadership events, and educational activities across the state. Seeing the amount of work that goes into supporting producers and promoting the pork industry gave me a greater appreciation for all that happens behind the scenes.

Out of everything I did this summer, the highlight was working directly with the kids.

Assisting with youth programs and seeing how much these kids genuinely care about the pork industry at such a young age was easily the best part of the experience. Watching their excitement and enthusiasm firsthand was incredibly rewarding,

During his high school years, he was heavily involved in Texas 4-H and FFA through serving in officer positions and on competitive teams. Gober plans to continue his pursuit of being a veterinarian like his father and continue to give back to an industry that has given him so much.

Ford plans to pursue a future in veterinary medicine and hopes to continue serving the agriculture industry through leadership and education.

For many years, she has been actively involved in the Texas pork industry through her family’s swine operation. Recently, Krohn completed her term as Area II FFA President, as well as being heavily involved on national qualifying CDE teams.

“This association has shaped who I am both inside and outside of the show ring,” Krohn said. “Through showing pigs and participating in Texas Pork youth programs, I’ve learned the value of hard work, responsibility, humility, and serving something bigger than myself. I hope to continue giving back to the industry that has given me so much by advocating for agriculture and encouraging the next generation to get involved.”

LAMESA, TX FRESHMAN AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY First generation pig farmer, Kotton West, is from Taft, Texas, and plans to attend Blinn College to be a member of the livestock judging team, as well as pursue a degree in animal science. Through his experiences in Texas 4-H, West has served in several leadership positions, as well as recently serving as a Texas Youth Livestock Ambassador. West plans to return to the farm after college to help run his family’s row crop farm and continue to raise pigs.

“Advocacy is more than promoting pork. I’ve had the opportunity to grow closer with my team and develop new ideas to impact the youth that currently serve the pork industry. After completing the Texas pork Youth retreat camp, I can honestly tell you Texas Pork has a future that is brighter than any of us could’ve imagined. There are so many kids waiting to make a long-term impact on our industry.

As the new communications director, I look forward to developing new ways to promote, advocate, and engage our youth on social media across a variety of platforms. I am also looking forward to increasing membership across all ages, regardless of background.

The youth of our industry is going to be the reason we get to continue doing what we love. The number of agriculturists is going down every day. My job is going to be extremely important in recruiting and keeping kids engaged in an industry that feeds the entire world.

Alongside the ambassadors, the youth membership has more ideas to continue and preserve our industry. I will be developing a strategic marketing and advertising plan as well as an analytic system to keep records of youth enrollment. As I wrap up my first year as a Texas Pork Junior Ambassador, gratitude is the word that comes to mind. This past year has been filled with incredible role models and leaders who have poured into me and inspired me in ways I never imagined.

This organization is so much more than the production of pork, it is a community of passionate, servant-hearted individuals who are committed to making a difference. What makes this entire experience even more meaningful is my team. Every single person brings light, and positivity to everything we do. As I begin my second year and step into the role of Events Director alongside my sunshine girl, Lynley Albert, I couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead.

Our goal isn’t to start over, but to continue building on the strong foundation that the two ambassador teams before us have worked so incredibly hard to establish.

After hosting the second annual Pork Retreat this summer, our team walked away with countless ideas for how we can continue expanding both our message and the experience we provide for our youth. Every decision we make and idea we pursue is centered around our youth. As the third ambassador team, our vision is growth.

We want to reach more young people who are eager to learn, grow, and become part of the Texas Pork family. We hope to expand not only in numbers, but also in the strength of our community. We want to help build the character of the young people we have the privilege of serving. As I step into my role as events director alongside Hannah Garcia, my primary goal is not to rewrite what already works, but to build upon the strong foundation that has been established from previous ambassadors and find ways to make an already outstanding program even better. Whether through engaging workshops at the Texas Youth Retreat, well-organized competitions at the Texas’ Elite, or meaningful networking opportunities throughout the year, I hope to create experiences that are both educational and memorable.

I hope to strengthen connections from junior ambassadors to youth participants while continuing to promote the Texas pork industry positively and professionally. I am excited for the opportunity to serve in this role and help contribute to the continued success and growth of this association.

TEXAS PORK YOUTH RETREAT: Be the Light

he Texas Pork Producers Association hosted the 2026 Texas Pork Youth Retreat at Texas A&M University, bringing together 88 youth from across Texas and nearly doubling attendance from the inaugural retreat last year. Over the weekend, participants took part in leadership activities, hands-on learning, and opportunities to connect with other youth interested in the pork industry.

Throughout the weekend, campers explored different areas of the pork industry through handson activities, demonstrations, and educational sessions. Participants learned about the harvest processes, carcass evaluation, fabrication, reproduction, sausage making, biosecurity, and pork nutrition while also taking part in a live hog evaluation and career-focused discussions. These experiences allowed campers to ask questions, learn new skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the pork production chain.

The retreat also helped participants build leadership skills and put what they learned into practice. Whether they competed in the cookoff challenge, participated in the debate, took part in communication and team-building activities, or spent time with their breakout groups, campers built friendships and connections that lasted beyond the weekend.

“The youth retreat is an eye-opening experience not only for our campers, but for anyone who attends,” said Riley Reep, director of communications, programming, and operations for the association. “A big theme for the weekend was to be a light to others in a world full of darkness.

Each of these campers has the power to positively impact the world, and that starts here at the youth retreat. This event creates a community of individuals who dare to be different to better an industry we all love dearly.”

The Texas Pork Junior Ambassador team led breakout groups, assisted with activities, and mentored participants throughout the weekend.

Their leadership helped create an environment where campers felt comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and learning from one another.

“I am incredibly grateful we are for all of the time, effort, and heart that the association poured into making this camp such a special experience,” a camper mentioned in their post-event survey.

“Over these past four days, we gained so much more than knowledge — we gained friendships, confidence, and memories that will stay with us for years to come. Thank you for investing in us, encouraging us, and creating an environment where we could learn, grow, and have fun.”

Beyond the hands-on learning, the retreat allowed participants to hear from industry leaders, explore potential career paths, and learn about the many opportunities available within the pork industry. Through leadership activities, career discussions, and conversations with professionals from across the industry, campers gained a broader understanding of where a future in agriculture could take them.

On behalf of the association, we would like to thank the Texas A&M University’s animal science department for hosting the event and pouring into these students.

Following another year of growth, the Texas Pork Producers Association looks forward to continuing to expand the Texas Pork Youth Retreat and providing even more youth with opportunities to explore the pork industry, develop leadership skills, and build connections across Texas.

NEW WORLD SCREWWORM RESOURCES FOR TEXAS SHOW PIG

With summer jackpots and farrowing season in full swing, it is crucial that Texas swine producers and exhibitors are educated on risks, management practices, surveillance, and treatment if a case were to occur.

We’re sharing proactive educational resources on New World screwworm (NWS) to help swine producers understand the pest, recognize potential signs, and know where to turn for additional information.

While New World screwworm has not been reported in any swine herds, education and awareness are key tools in safeguarding our animals and our industry. This information is intended to support preparedness efforts and ensure producers have access to the latest guidance and resources.

What is New World Screwworm?

According to Texas Agrilife Extension, The New World Screwworm (NWS) is a parasitic fly whose larvae feeds on living tissues of warm-blooded animals, which can occur in any broken or damaged skin. NWS was successfully eradicated from the United States and Mexico in 1970’s through the mass release of sterile male flies. However, a recent NWS from Panama through Mexico has brought concern to our country’s livestock production.

Risks and Management Practices that Could Attract NWS Per the Texas Agrilife Extension factsheet and the Screwworm Coalition of Texas, various factors and swine management practices could cause breaks in the skin and risk exposure.

• Piglet processing, including ear notching or tagging, castration, tail docking, tattooing, or needle teeth clipping • Vaccination or any needle injection • Ear tagging • Umbilical sites in newborn piglets • Skin abrasions or wounds from external sources • Ticks, lice, or rubbing sites • Poor hygiene

A good rule of thumb during this outbreak is to closely monitor your swine, especially if they have an open wound or any other exposed areas of tissue.

Practical Prevention Practices Per the Texas Animal Health Commission, the chances of finding a NWS fly are low, so producers are encouraged to remain watchful and report suspicious maggots on their animals. However, there are preventative measures to take into consideration.

Common practices such as quickly treating and sealing wounds to ensure that the fly has no viable host are key practices in preventing NWS in your operation.

Times this would be beneficial include, but are not limited to: • Covering the site of where you tagged your animal for validation and/or an 840 tag • Sealing an open wound from rubbing sites • Irritated vaccination sites • Umbilical cord sites It is highly recommended for producers and exhibitors work with their vet to determine what treatment products and methods to use. The CTBR Top Breeder and Premier Exhibitor programs are based off of a cumulative point system tabulated by TPPA staff. Here is the updated points system that is used to reward breeders and exhibitors for their accomplishments at the following major barrow shows: the State Fair of Texas, Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, and Rodeo Austin barrow shows, plus, the Texas’ Elite Showcase gilt show.

The top breeder awards will be determined by the total points earned according to the table listed.

The results of the CTBR Top Breeder and Premier Exhibitor programs will be released after the spring major shows each year. For questions regarding these programs, please contact the TPPA office at tppa@texaspork.org.

FOR SHOW PIG SALE SEASON

W

ith the sale season right around the corner, it is important to remember that the choices we make can have a big impact on the health of our pigs and the swine industry. Bringing home a new pig is one of the most exciting parts of the season, but it also means bringing an animal from a different environment onto your farm. Taking a few extra precautions can help keep your new pigs and the pigs already at home healthy.

Before heading to a sale, make sure your truck, trailer, and any equipment you plan to use are cleaned and disinfected. In addition, it is important to have a separate quarantine area ready before your new pig arrives. Keeping new pigs separated for at least 30 days gives you time to watch them closely and make sure they are eating, acting, and adjusting normally before introducing them to your other pigs.

Most sales will provide biosecurity supplies, but it never hurts to come prepared.

Pack your own disposable boot covers, an extra set of clothes, and any other supplies you may need. These simple steps can help lower the chances of bringing home something that could affect the health of the pigs you already own.

While at the sale, pay attention to the pigs around you and look for anything that seems out of the ordinary. Coughing, trouble breathing, not eating normally, or unusual behavior can all be

signs that a pig may not be healthy. Wear boot covers, follow the biosecurity rules put in place by the sale, and avoid entering pens or sharing equipment unless it is necessary.

Once you return home, your responsibility does not end when you unload your new pig.

Throw away used boot covers, wash the clothes and shoes you wore to the sale, and thoroughly clean and disinfect your truck, trailer, and equipment before using them again. Continue keeping your new pig in quarantine for at least 30 days and monitor it daily before introducing it to the rest of your barn.

These steps may seem small, but they can make a big difference in protecting your pigs and even the future of the swine industry. Sale season is an exciting time, and by making biosecurity part of your routine, we can all help keep our pigs healthy.

S

uccess in the livestock industry never happens overnight. It takes long days, late nights, countless lessons learned through trial and error, and a community willing to lend a helping hand. For Brad Cudd and his family at Cudd Farms, that journey has been defined by perseverance, family, and a passion for raising quality livestock.

“My dad and Chris Bishop talked us into buying two sows from Brockman Farms in 2021,” Bradley recalled. “I got interested in it, and the operation grew from there.”

As first-generation breeders, the Cudd was the first to say they started with enthusiasm, but very little experience.

“We had never farrowed any litters before,” Cudd laughed. “We were literally YouTubing it and relying on other breeders for advice along the way.”

Today, Cudd Farms operates a 60-sow herd consisting primarily of Hampshire and Crossbred genetics. While the operation has grown significantly in just a few years, Cudd is quick to point out that none of it happened alone. However, one sow holds a special place in the family’s story.

“Penny” was purchased as a show gilt during the family’s first year in the business. Over time, she became the foundation of some of the operation’s most successful genetics, including the grandmother of the Champion Lightweight

Hampshire barrow at the San Antonio Stock Show and the Reserve Hampshire at the San Angelo Stock Show in 2026.

While the wins are rewarding, Cudd believes the greatest asset of the pork industry isn’t found in the barn—it’s found in its people.

“The most rewarding part of the pork industry is the people,” Cudd said. “We would not be where we are today without people like the Brockman’s and Chris Bishop. They have always willing to answer phone calls, offer advice, and help guide us through it all” The support extends far beyond mentors. At Cudd Farms, success is truly a family effort.

Tagen, Brad’s wife, their children, extended family, and friends all play an important role in keeping the operation moving. Whether it’s waking up at two o’clock in the morning to farrow sows or helping prepare animals for the show ring, everyone contributes.

“This operation would not function without our family and friends,” Cudd said. “They go above and beyond every day.”

That willingness to invest in others is something Cudd believes defines the livestock industry. Cudd said the livestock is more than a business, but more so families showing up for one another and teaching youth valuable life lessons.

“I think the most rewarding part is you’re there with your family, your friends, and you have a great time doing it,” Cudd said. “It’s a very rewarding career, and it can be very disappointing at the same time. It has a bunch of highs and lows, but the best part are the memories and lessons learned along the way.”
