EDITOR’S NOTES WE DEPEND ON YOU This issue is a little light on editorial beyond the Cash Cow feature in an effort to get your Trails Magazine back on it’s expected mailing schedule. It has been a battle for a while now, but we’re still pushing hard to get there. For those who like to contribute advertising or editorial to Trails, please note that the deadline for the next issue is always at the bottom of my letter. While there is some flexibility to get that perfect photo or some last minute information, the date shown as deadline is the date you should have contacted me by to let me know you have materials coming. That allows us to allot the space for it, whether ad or editorial. The world of print publications has to stay ahead to allow time for printing and mail delivery and once behind it takes a lot of concessions to get it back where it needs to be. We appreciate everyone contacting us by issue deadline and getting materials in to us as quickly as possible. Having time to spend on ads and writing material makes all the difference in quality of your magazine. Think of it like this...if we have to do 15 ads in two days because everyone put off sending materials in a lot less time is going to be spent on each ad than if we had the materials on time and could spend a week doing top quality work for our advertisers. There’s lots coming up in 2024 to participate in. Your association has several events we hope to see you all at starting with Cattlemen’s Congress and Longhorn Weekend in January, to the World Show in June and Horn Showcase in October. Add in shows such as Houston and State Fair of Texas, and you have lots of opportunities to be a part of association events. In addition, there are many sales and shows already listed for 2024 on the last page of each Trails Magazine and on www.tlbaa.org. We hope to see you on the road. If traveling is not in your plans, then you can still participate in Trails Magazine through News on the Trail, submitting photos for “Just For Grins” or for us to use in future issues, and by submitting editorial ideas for consideration. You can also keep an eye on our weekly E-newletter ETrails for announcements about Affiliate Committee contests and other fun activities to participate in without ever leaving the ranch. If you are a newer member, you can submit a “Meet Our Members” write up and photo to run in Trails and introduce yourself to our membership. In spite of it all, the Longhorn industry did not see a fall in the number of Cash Cows, rather an increase. Being Behind = Loss of Marketing Value If you are always finding yourself rushing at the last minute because time slipped away, you are not alone. What you may not realize though is that delaying sponsorships, consignments and ad submissions can actually cause you to miss out on part of the value of the marketing tool. Perhaps the biggest marketing tool that loses value when you wait until the last minute to commit is event sponsorships. Most events accept sponsorship money from the moment the dates for the event are announced. Sponsors names are often included on print and social media promotion of the event as soon as the sponsorships start coming in. Depending on the event, that may cover a span of several months. If sponsor benefits include an ad in a program or promotional materials such as banners, coming in late may cause you to miss these opportunities. Many events occur about the same time each year. The TLBAA wall calendar has many annual events pre-printed on the date pages and there is a regularly updated events calendar in Trails each month as well as on www.tlbaa.org. Go ahead and plan ahead for events with sponsorships that would benefit your marketing efforts so you are ready to commit as soon as the call for sponsors is sent out. Consignment sales are a big investment. Part of the attraction is benefitting from being included in promotions put out by the sale. While lots may not be assigned until all the consignments are in, if yours is destined to be included in the sale, it could be promoted along with other early consignments. Another, perhaps more subtle benefit of having all your paperwork, payment and a photo in early is when it comes time to choose lots, those who were late or missing information are more likely to be cut.

The posting of consignments on Facebook or through e-blasts is also common now and the earlier they can showcase early consignments the better for drawing more in and getting buyers for the sale. There is a tie-in between magazine advertising and consignment sales. Publications are normally printed a month before the actual cover date of the issue. That means materials for advertising have to be submitted a month and a half to two months in advance. If you know a sale is in August, you need to know what you want in your July ad by the end of May to make the deadline for early promotion of your sale animal. The loss of value in magazine or catalog advertising can vary greatly depending on the publication. The most obvious loss is if you miss the deadline and are omitted, but there are other things to consider. Unless the creation of the ad is being done in-house by the one producing the publication, there is often a rush charge added to last minute design work. Sometimes the publication itself may charge extra if an ad requires reworking page layout to accommodate it at the last minute. Beyond the potential extra monetary cost is the much greater risk of errors in a rushed situation. The possibility of typos, image issues or missing information all rise exponentially when everything is put together under severe time constraints, often when the workload was already busy finishing up the project. Not only is investing in an ad and then finding mistakes in the final printed version disappointing, it can even lead to extra payment to put out additional information rectifying the error if it is misleading, such as incorrect pedigree information or wrong date of birth. One more thing to consider with periodicals, whether they are in print or digital... last-second ads are rarely sold at a discount. If you think ahead enough to know that you’ll be doing several ads over the upcoming months you can request a package deal or frequency discount. Most publishers have a price list that points out the different price breaks for repeat advertisers. These discounts are not given retroactively if you just happen to run six ads in a year. They must be committed to up front, when the first ad is placed. Have trouble planning ahead? Are you motivated by getting the best bang for your buck? Then consider your procrastination as losing valuable exposure for your program and it may be easier to make yourself think ahead and take full advantage of available opportunities. If you need help being prompted when the time comes, contact the sale host, event organizer or ad rep to request a reminder when participation can begin.

NEWS On the Trail... Industry-Wide Futurity Points Tracking Offered As A Free Service To the Longhorn Industry The National Longhorn Futurity Race (NLFR) is new program rolling out in 2024. This will be total points gained in 2024 from participating futurities from across the nation. The awards will go to the High Point Heifer and High Point Bull, these will be the animals that earn the most points in 2024. The winning animals will be featured on the 2025 cover of the January Trails and January Drover. Each winning ranch will have an article in the magazines as well. There is no charge to participate in the NLFR. We will be totaling and posting point totals below after each futurity. This will give you the chance to see points throughout the year. This is a program from Huntington Sales, we’re giving back to the industry. Contact us to be listed in the NLFR. We hope to include you in this program. Any futurity may have their points included, they simply need to contact us for the format we need the results submitted in prior to their futurity. All registered Texas Longhorns qualify.
FAQ’S How are ties broken? Ties are broken by the two judges that are thrown out. If there is still a tie, the animals are compared head to head with each judge. How are points accumulated? The score from the futurities will be totaled after the futurity. When do points start to accumulate and end? Point accumulation start January 1st and end December 31st. What is the free to be part of the NLFR? There is no fee to be part of teh NLFR. What do the winners receive? The winning animal will be featured on the cover of the January Trails & eDover with an article on each winning ranch. How do we participate in the NLFR? Futurity hosts can contact us to have their futurity added.

In Memoriam
Cynthia Marie Manion November 21, 1959 - December 4, 2023 Cynthia Marie Manion, 64, of Wills Point, Texas, passed away on December 4, 2023, in Dallas. She was born on November 21, 1959, in Dallas, Texas. Cynthia was a courageous and friendly character, known for her strong-willed nature. Cynthia is survived by her loving husband, Robert Manion, her mother Shirley Reynolds, her sons Daniel Manion (Cassie) and Colton Reynolds (Emily), her daughters Rebecca Manion and Chelsea Manion, her brother Gregory Dale Reynolds, Jr. (Amber), and her sister Laurie Walker (Don). She was also a cherished grandmother to Logan Martin, Audrey Manion, Josie Reynolds, and Zayden Manion. Cynthia was preceded in death by her father, Gregory Dale Reynolds. Cynthia graduated from Richardson High School as part of the Class of 1978. She proudly served in the United States Army and had a successful career as a Horse Racing Jockey from 1991 to 1992. Following her time in the racing industry, Cynthia dedicated 24 years of her life to Dallas Fire Rescue, serving the community from February 1994 to August 2018. Outside of her professional life, Cynthia had a deep passion for her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with them, attending concerts, and raising longhorn cattle. Mullin-Fuller Funeral Home was honored to be assisting the family during this difficult time. In memory of Cynthia’s remarkable life, her family kindly requests donations to be made to a charity of your choice. Please join us in celebrating the life of Cynthia Marie Manion and honoring her legacy. Memorials are published free of charge based on information shared by the family or a close family friend. January traditionally brings fresh goals, a renewed motivation and a countdown to the annual TLBT World Youth Show. What are your goals this year? Maybe you want to watch those newborn calves a little closer and start choosing your show string for next show season. Maybe you want to work your current show string more often to get them polished in the ring. My fellow seniors and I are gearing up for our Senior Heifer Sale. The TLBT successfully raised funds for General Funds and our service project, and we’re planning on finishing the year strong. Make sure that if you see any TLBT officers/directors at the next upcoming shows, start a conversation so that we can share some of our goals for 2024 with y’all! If you’ve ever thought about serving on the TLBT board, the upcoming Spring shows are a great opportunity to reach out and meet the entire board and get to know more about what we do. Elections will be held at the TLBT General Membership Meeting at the 2024 World Show. Let’s get started on “Building A Better Tomorrow!” Happy New Year,

Hey TLBT! This book that was kindly donated during our 2023 leadership camp provides some excellent Longhorn words of wisdom. There are plenty of great lessons from Longhorns that you can take away from this book - lessons that relate to our everyday life! Adapt To Your Surroundings These days, that kind of stability is more exception than the rule. We’ve become a mobile society, and, as such, we find ourselves having to adapt to new people, new customs, new ideas, new cultures. Even if we stay in the same place, we are likely to encounter new bosses and new ways of doing things. Change can be stressful or it can be exhilarating, or both. One of the strengths of the Longhorn over the years has been his ability to adapt to different climates, different terrains, different situations. The Longhorn found a way to adapt and survive without changing the essential character of who he is. Chapter 38, page 77 Learning From Longhorns by Lester Galbreath and Glen Dromgoole.

What have you learned from showing Longhorns? - I have learned countless lessons from showing Longhorn cattle. But the extensive ones that have stuck with me since the start is having a sense of responsibility, sportsmanship, and the will to compete. It takes time to balance and learn the true meaning of each one, but they are all very valuable lessons to use in life. What/Who has been your biggest influence while showing Texas Longhorn Cattle? - I would say that my biggest influence while showing has definitely been my mom. She supports me day in and day out with what I love to do and gives me advice that I may not want, but need to hear. She has always pushed me to be the best and true version of myself.

AFFILIATE UPDATES We hope that you and your families had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with tasty food, wonderful memories and special times with family and friends. If we missed you at our annual Jim Curry Classic held November 3rd-5th we hope you will consider joining us on February 16-18, 2024 for the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo. The San Angelo Stock Show was established in 1932 as an AMANDA DANLEY PRESIDENT opportunity to promote agriculture to West Texas boys, and eventually girls. The INFO@WESTTEXASLONGHORNASSOCIATION.COM San Angelo Livestock Show has grown to be one of the largest junior shows in the nation. This year we will have Miniature Longhorns offered in all three shows. Our mission is to promote Texas Longhorn Cattle and help Breeders in our Region. To that end, this month’s report is written by Marlin Krump. Our interest in Texas Longhorn cattle began because of a very scary triple bypass for my dad during the Fargo flood in April of 1997. A family friend, Steven Manock, who owns Manock Meats in Great Bend, ND. Steve was butchering a Longhorn steer, and we acquired a sample of burger along with facts about the heart healthy meat. At that time, we become hooked on Texas Longhorns. We started finishing
Longhorn steers in the fall of 1997. In the fall of 2002, Vickie’s dad, Glenn Dorr, talked us into buying our first three cows. Sadly, cancer claimed him before he got to see our first calf crop. Man has our ranching story mushroomed from those three cows. In 2013, we bought a small herd of Longhorns in Minnesota. On September 26, 2015, we attended the first Great Plains meeting in Rapid City, SD. The Krump Ranch is just west of Hankinson, ND. We have had visitors stop from time to time to see the Longhorns; the furthest away being a young man from the Czech Republic. Our collection of Longhorns belonging to our oldest son, Martin, Vickie and I are beefy Longhorns with some show bloodlines. Our youngest son, Benjamin, however, has his sights set on producing big, long horned cattle. Being a part of GPTLA allows us to make many new friends all over the country. GPTLA has also helped our small business, “The Creation Station,” a chance to help Longhorn ranchers all over the country to use our services of embroidery and screen printing. We are proud to say that we will celebrating our 6th anniversary in March. We are the home of “Love Your Longhorn T-shirts.” Our business can be found on Facebook or reached during normal business hours at (701)-242-7549. One of our favorite weekends during the year has to be the third weekend in August. We participate in many ways from selling the t-shirts, judging, helping with the silent auction, and maybe if it rains in southeast North Dakota, buying another cow. Of course, we have to be done haying before that weekend. Before I forget, my dad, Marvin Krump, is looking forward to his 88th birthday in January; still enjoying Longhorn beef not only on the plate, but also at the ranch where he enjoys helping wherever he can.
