Cougar Bait, (DOB: 5/15/19, TL Bulletproof x MS Dutchess SH), took the 2020 Houston Stock Show and Rodeo by storm! In the Youth Show he won his class and was the overall Reserve Grand Champion. EDITOR’S NOTES A BIT OF NORMALCY It is nice when in the midst of chaos and controversy there is a bit of normalcy. While the world still whirled in its insanity, Longhorn breeders were able to come together in Belton, TX to pull off a World Show on par with last year’s record-setting numbers.

Starting on pg. 14 and continuing through pg. 37 you can find the complete results of the shows, youth competitions, futurity and lots of photos!

Other events have managed to work within the restrictions and pull off successful events as well. You will find the results of two sales inside, the Red McCombs Fiesta Sale and the Cherry Blossom Sale. There are many more coming up this fall. find a listing of upcoming sales and shows, some in person, some virtual - all allowing Longhorn owners to conduct as much “business as usual” as possible.

Trails wants to help breeders continue to conduct business as well.

We have had lots of new or potential breeders contacting us through the summer and where do we refer them to in order to find breeders in their area? Trails Magazine issues online and the website breeders directory.

If you are not listed, they can’t find you. You can be in both places for a year for $555 or if you only want to choose one option, the Trails Breeders Guide is $365 for a year and the Online Directory is $240 for a year. Both allow you better odds of your ranch popping up when people search for Longhorns.

Most Trails packages, designed to get you marketing that fits your specific needs, may be broken into installments to make it easier to bundle and save for the upcoming year. Don’t assume you can’t afford to market until you ask. Unless you have the luxury of being able to wait for people to just happen to drive by and see your Longhorns, you need to do something to let the world know you are there. And it doesn’t have to be full pages to be effective. Turn to pg. 53 to see a full list of pricing options for Trails advertising.

Sponsorship may be a better way to get the exposure you need. Many of the Horn Showcase and Bull Alley packages found on pgs. 43 and 44 this month offer something for every budget and all get your program good exposure. Some of the higher level ones even include enough marketing to cover most of your needs for the upcoming year! Take a look.

These fall issues are a great time to stick your toe in the water with marketing. There will be some great editorial subjects coming up to finish out this year and the more people want to read, the more views your ads will get. And, shhh, don’t tell anyone but there may be some special offers to be had. You don’t know unless you ask.

Chairman’s Message Greetings, Hard to believe that this year is half gone. Hope you all are doing well and staying healthy during these crazy times. It was a strange first half of the year for the Longhorn breed, with sales and shows being canceled and rescheduled. We’ve had issues with the beef sales part of our industry. It was really exciting when the Longhorn Beef Producer Committee hit a major home run with the advertising on Facebook. The response for meat across the country was unbelievable, only to hit a wall with the shortage of packing plants that would close or be overwhelmed. But, as always, “our longhorn family” is working through this and getting cattle processed and meat out there. I really appreciate the way that people were sharing information on packers with people that were looking. Hat’s off to you all!

Just an update on something we feel is exciting and could help our marketing of our cattle and get our history and breed out in the spotlight. We were blessed to receive a special grant from Google in the amount of $120,000.00 (that value is given in advertising) procured

by Jason Hartline, of Hartline and Partners, that is ours to use for a year. After finding this out and picking myself up off the floor, the Board of Directors went looking across the country for people who have had success in moving and marketing Longhorns and wanted to serve, to be on the Marketing Committee. I believe we have a great one. Mark Hubbell – Chairman, Stacey Schumacher, Charlotte Cote, Ross Ohlendorf, Mike Lucas, Scott Picker and Jason Hartline. If you have any questions or suggestions, you can contact this committee.

The Trails magazine has something for everyone. I know that Myra and Trace can fix your ranch up with a beautiful ad and at good prices. They are putting out a really nice magazine.

Don’t forget to get your memberships renewed. It’s that time of the year.

The TLBAA World Expo 2020 is in the books and was a great event. Even in this pandemic, the World Expo held close to last year’s record number of entries and participants. We had a short General Membership meeting and good turnout for that. I really want to thank Sales and Events Manager Pam Robison and the World Show Committee for a tremendous effort and lots of hard work pulling this off. Also, to the rest of the TLBAA Staff – Rick, Lisa, Amelia and Trace – for their time and work during the show. And a really big thank you to all the members and exhibitors for them wanting to be there and show. “It takes a village”. The event coverage starts on pg. 14.

The Horn Showcase on October 1-3, 2020, is taking entries for the futurity, Bull Alley and measuring classes. You still have time to get your entries in for these and your support will be greatly appreciated in making the Horn Showcase happen. It is the largest, and only, measuring event in the country. It is a great way to showcase your animals, promote your herd sires and sell semen, and enjoy the fun time competing in the futurity. It will be a great weekend for all to enjoy, visit and catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. Sponsorship packages are available and you can contact Pam Robison at the office, or any of the committee members if you would choose to support the event.

The Same – But Different The 34th TLBAA World Expo was the same fun filled, nonstop action that it typically is, but was also different in a lot of ways this year. The World Show Steering Committee was charged with the unenviable task of weighing the risks and restrictions the COVID-19 pandemic put on everyone across the world with the desire to hold the most anticipated show that everyone strives for each year. The Committee and staff watched the daily updates as everyone else did, as well as staying in contact with the Belton facility.

The last qualifying show was held the middle of March instead of the usual first of May, thus denying everyone the opportunity to qualify those deserving animals at the end of the show season. The World Show Steering Committee solved that issue by allowing a “non-qualifying fee” in those instances. And, it was received with flying colors with the exhibitors as there was a total of 831 entries for this year’s show! This was right on par with last year’s record number of entries.

Once everyone got on the grounds, the differences could be seen including hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility, portions of the seating area blocked off to help with social distancing, and masks among the crowd.

Everyone cooperated with the required food handling at the banquet as well. All in all, the excitement in just being able to show and visit with old and new friends ruled the day! Turn the pages for complete coverage of the event.

Message

TLBT National Youth Show 2020 is one show I’ll never forget! Time with friends, family, cattle and some very intense moments. The TLBT Officer/Director elections were held Friday, June 26th. I am proud to hold the office of President for the 2020-2021 Show Season and excited for a new year with unlimited opportunities!

My dreams began in November of 2014, my first calf (a donated heifer from Flying V Ranch) went home on a borrowed trailer. Was I ready for a Texas Longhorn? Not at all!

Mentors quickly stepped in to guide us on what to feed, how to halter break, grooming and registering for shows. Foxy (FV Fox Two) will forever be the spark that fueled my passion for Texas Longhorns. Over 5 years later, both my siblings are showing and together we own about 40 head of cattle. I’ve brought several youth members into the TLBT organization, promoted beef sales, conducted seminars and given speeches. I wonder, did the Vinson family really know the value of their donation back in 2014? Foxy was never a grand champion cow, but she certainly opened the door to a whole new world for me and my family. I am an advocate of donation calves for this reason. At the award banquet Saturday night, 8 donated heifers were given to the winners of Gold Merit and Hall of Fame competitions. Time will show how these deserving youth use their donated calves to further their breeding program. I’m expecting big things from these future breeders and leaders. Congratulations to the winners and a huge thank you to those ranches who donated heifers!

Some members take it to the next level, advocating for the breed in unique ways. Leading up to the 2020 National Youth Show Gabby Curtis hosted a showmanship clinic for other TLBT members to brush up on their skills. TLBT MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: 1.) What motivated you to participate in the Gold Merit competition? I was motivated by many things. I am coming to the end of my show career and hadn’t had the opportunity to compete, so I knew I wanted to participate this year. I have never really done any kind of writing or speaking events, so I knew that I would learn a lot from it.

2.) How did you feel after your speech?

After presenting my speech, I felt very relieved. I was so nervous to walk in and present what I wrote, even if I was confident about my topic. I’ve never done something like Gold Merit so when I finished I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.

3.) What was your topic? My Gold Merit Speech topic was about the effects of showing cattle and teens/children in foster care.

4.) What ranches did your two donation calves come from? I received two heifers. In Gold Merit, I received a heifer from Pine Ridge Ranch. For Hall of Fame I received a heifer from Sanddollar Ranch.

5.) Can you offer any advice for TLBT members who may be participating in the Gold Merit Competition for 2021? My advice for 2021 would be to just do it! I was so nervous and I didn’t do it when I had the chance and now I feel like I’m running out of time. It can’t hurt to try, just give it your all and even if you don’t win you will learn so much about yourself. You will learn your limits and exceed your own expectations.

6.) What are your future plans for your new heifers? I plan to exhibit them in my 2020-2021 show string.

Hailey Mann became the proud owner of DC Vegas, a young steer donated by Don Bartlett of D&C Ranch (Frisco, TX). Hailey and DC Vegas earned class champion at the TLBT National Youth Show 2020, a well earned reward for months of dedication and hard work. While the ribbons and buckles are amazing, the true win comes outside the ring – when a TLBT member and an established ranch make a connection. Don Bartlett recently commented on a post by Hailey Mann... “One of the many rewarding events in my Longhorn life was donating 2 steers to a youth program about 20 months ago. Hailey Mann won one, DC Vegas. Since then I have received a dozen letters from Hailey Mann, countless positive posts from her. Today I finally met Hailey Mann, her parents and her sister. It is more rewarding to donating to youth than to selling ropers. If any youth wants to follow in Hailey Mann footsteps I will donate a steer and I encourage the rest of my friends to do so.”

Updates and Additions to the TLBAA Handbook Effective beginning July 1, 2020 General Rules and Regulations Pgs. 43 and 44 Grooming of Animals: Exhibitors are encouraged to show their animals in a neat and clean condition. Washing, brushing, combing and trimming of excess hair is permitted. As a recommended guideline, hair trimming should be done in those areas such as the neck and portions of the topline of the animal which may not lay flat against the body. The head, neck, brisket and around the base of the horns may be clipped smooth and the underline clipped blending sides. The sheath, navel flap, udder and tail (excluding the tail switch) may be clipped to remove long hair. While not advised or recommended body clipping or slick sheering is not grounds for removal from competition.

All animals must be exhibited with the hair must be brushed down and smooth without the use of adhesives, aerosol sprays or agents that deter from the animal’s natural appearance. The tail switch is to be long and full without trimming or docking, and no balling or back combing of the tail switch is allowed. Sprays or concentrates specifically formulated and sold as fly and/or insect inhibitor or prohibitor are allowed to be applied to the hair. Show sheen administered from a pump spray bottle will be permitted.

While trimming and clipping grooming of animals is permissible at shows, specifically prohibited practices include are: {a) the training of hair upwards or forwards and/ or being pulled upwards or forwards on any part of the animal’s body by brushing, combing or any other means; (b) the use of grooming chutes and/ or generators for the purpose of to aid in the clipping or grooming of hair on the premises of show locations (Note: generators mounted to trailers with living quarters, travel trailers or RV’s are acceptable); (bc) the sanding, oiling and polishing of horns; (c d) polishing of hooves; (d e) use of neck sweats. Violations of these rules will be grounds for removal from competition by show management and forfeiture of all fees and World Show qualifications. Sprays or concentrates specifically formulated and sold as fly and/or insect inhibitor or prohibitor are allowed to be applied to the hair. Show sheen administered from a pump spray bottle will be permitted.

Mike Broussard Double B Farms • Orange County, TX As far back as I can remember, I have had a passion for cattle ranching. I guess it came naturally from my early ancestors back in the late 1800’s, when the Broussard’s six brothers relocated from Louisiana to Texas with the original purchase of 3000 acres for the purpose of running cattle in Texas. With hard work and dedication, the ranch was expanded to over 4,000 head of cattle.

I was recently blessed with the opportunity to purchase 951 acres in Orange County, TX with about half a mile of Sabine River frontage. My childhood dream of running cattle is coming together at age 53....it’s never too late. Of course the first task is to sell off the timber and develop pastures with grass, fencing, water wells, etc. It is indeed exciting times for me and Double B Farms. I decided on Double B with my 2 daughters in mind, Bailey and Brooklyn, hence Double B. I decided on the Texas Longhorn breed with much consideration.

We were looking for a breed with durability, heat tolerance, mosquito Mike’s Champion Bull “Cougar Bait”. You can also and disease resistance, and of course docile to handle. It is certainly see him on this month’s cover. strange for me to say as a ‘89 Texas A&M graduate, but I fell in love with the Texas Longhorn breed as a perfect fit. I have purchased a young bull and 3 heifers from the show arena, and it’s just so exciting how each head has its own stamp on its hide that makes it special in comparison to others in the breed. When a heifer is about to become a cow, like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get as Tom Hanks would say.

In closing, I feel that I am off to a great start with my new farming venture and must give a special thanks to a few individuals that have given me a warm welcome to the Texas Longhorn network. I am very grateful for the relationship that I have with the Charlie Nolan family, the Rusty Morgan Family, Chris Schaper, and Ross Ohlendorf.

HORN SHOWCASE FUTURITY

The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.

• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top 20% of the class.

• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.

• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB, and a horn measurement taken from the previous day. It will be a TTT, TH, Twist for the females, and a TTT, or TH for the males in the contest.

• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.

• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.

• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.

• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.

• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.

• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.

• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in Lawton.

• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.

• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.

HORN SHOWCASE SUPERIOR AWARD

This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.

• To win the Superior Award, you must receive the smallest number in the points system. 1st is granted 1 point. 2nd granted 2 points, and so on. This will be the same for the Futurity as well as horn measurement.

• In the Futurity, you must place in the top three in your class to be eligible to compete for the Superior Award, as well as placing in the top 3 in any measurement class (Tip to Tip, Total Horn, or Twist for females) or (Tip to Tip or Total Horn for bulls) to be eligible.

• Example of how Superior animal is awarded: Animal with the lowest number of points wins “Superior.” If there is a tie for Superior, then both animals will be awarded.

BULL ALLEY

• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.

• Bulls that are living must be present in Lawton, OK; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them) • Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 100 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.

Coronavirus Has Many Different Strains

C

oronavirus has been in the news a lot this year; the new human strain that started in China created worldwide panic. There are several strains of coronavirus that can affect humans, but even though they are related to the coronavirus in cattle, humans can’t get this disease from cattle.

Dr. Geof Smith, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, NC explains that the coronaviruses are a very diverse family of RNA viruses. These are a type of virus in which the genetic information is stored in the form of RNA (as opposed to DNA). “The coronaviruses are characterized by clublike spikes that project from their surface. The strains that cause respiratory disease in people and the strains that infect cattle are different. The bovine coronavirus is in group 2a and all the human respiratory coronaviruses have been in subgroup 2b,” Smith says.

Making sure calves get an adequate amount of high-quality colostrum soon after birth is the best insurance against scours caused by coronavirus, but there’s also an intranasal vaccine that can be given to newborn calves if there is some question about the adequacy of colostrum antibodies.

CORONAVIRUS IN CATTLE Most cattlemen are familiar with coronavirus because bovine coronavirus has been a problem in beef and dairy herds for many years, especially in young calves. Smith says there are three different but distinct disease syndromes caused by coronavirus in cattle.

CALF DIARRHEA - Coronavirus can infect and kill cells that line the small intestine in a young calf, damaging the lining so it can’t absorb fluid and nutrients. Moderate to severe diarrhea is the typical result. The diarrhea generally lasts four to seven days and is the most common sign of this disease.

Affected calves are usually between one and three weeks of age, according to Smith. Older calves generally have some resistance. If diarrhea shows up in a calf older than three weeks, it’s generally due to some other type of infection, or mixed infection.

The best prevention against diarrhea in young calves caused by coronavirus is a clean environment and strong immunity in the calves. If you have trouble with scours in young calves, it pays to vaccinate pregnant cows ahead of calving so they provide a high level of antibodies in their colostrum. There are several vaccines that can be given to pregnant cows (such as Calf-Guard— which can be given to pregnant cows or to baby calves, to protect against rotavirus and coronavirus—and ScourGuard which can be given to 50 | August 2020

trolytes (administered often) to replace what’s being lost through diarrhea. If you can prevent severe dehydration and help the calf fight the disease, he will usually recover within a few days. Viral scours does not respond to antibiotics, but your veterinarian may prescribe a broadspectrum antibiotic to protect the calf against secondary bacterial infections. A calf whose immune system is weakened by the viral infection is more vulnerable to an opportunistic bacterial infection in addition to the viral scours.

WINTER DYSENTERY is another disease in cattle associated with coronavirus. This is a highly contagious gastrointestinal disease, causing diarrhea in adult cattle. Dr. Gregg Hazlicek (Kansas State University) says it usually affects cattle 2 to 6 years of age. Even though it’s most common in dairies, it has also been seen in some cow-calf operations and feedlots. Several cases were recently diagnosed in the university lab at KSU. The diarrhea appears suddenly, and spreads

through the herd quickly. In some instances the cows seem fine one day and by the next day a large number of them have blackish-green diarrhea, or will be passing blood clots instead of manure.

Hazlicek says the virus is transmitted via feces (contaminating feed and water) but can also be spread via the respiratory tract, and there may be a mild nasal discharge. The number of cows in a herd that are affected is generally very high, but mortality rate is low. The disease is generally mild and the cows recover fairly quickly.

This type of diarrhea is most commonly seen in dairy cattle housed indoors during winter, according to Smith. “The most common sign is explosive diarrhea in multiple animals within the milking herd, and the diarrhea often contains blood,” says Smith.

Affected cows go off feed, so their milk production may drop significantly. There is often a musty, severely unpleasant odor in the barn during winter dysentery outbreaks. “There is no specific treatment for this disease other than keeping the cows hydrated with fluids, but actual death loss is usually low and the diarrhea typically resolves within a week or so,” he says.

Antibiotics are of no use for treating the virus; the main thing is to make sure the cattle have access to plenty of fresh water and highly palatable feeds (to encourage them to keep eating).

Diarrhea should always be properly diagnosed by a veterinarian, since there are other diseases that could cause diarrhea—including salmonella, coccidiosis and sometimes BVD. Hazlicek says that cows in herds that have experienced winter dysentery in the past are most at risk for getting it again.

Stress such as confinement, poor ventilation in barns, bad weather and a sudden drop in temperature may create more risk. Sanitation is important.

“We often see winter dysentery on operations that use the same loader buckets to load feed and also push manure,” he says.

Smith says research suggests that coronavirus is involved in bovine respiratory disease complex, though there is conflicting information in veterinary literature about the actual role of bovine coronavirus in causing pneumonia in cattle. “Several studies have shown that coronavirus represents one of the important viruses involved in development of bovine respiratory disease, though other researchers have not been able to find any correlation between prevalence of pneumonia and coronavirus shedding in the field.”

Some researchers have been able to consistently find this virus in healthy calves, and some studies have produced pneumonia in calves, using experimental coronavirus infection. Some field studies show that the virus can be more commonly isolated from calves with pneumonia than from healthy calves.

Smith says it is still not clear whether the virus that causes calf diarrhea, winter dysentery, and respiratory disease are all the same or a bit different. “The bovine coronavirus that causes these three distinct diseases may be the same virus or

Health there may be some slight differences. Several publications have suggested that these bovine coronaviruses are genomically the same as the respiratory coronaviruses, while other studies have shown some small differences. At present, we still aren’t sure whether the bovine coronavirus that causes diarrhea is exactly the same virus that causes pneumonia, but we do know that the bovine virus is different from the one causing disease in humans,” he says.

THE HUMAN STRAIN - Human coronavirus was first isolated in 1967 and is related to bovine coronavirus from a genetic standpoint, according to Smith. “Bovine coronavirus, however, has been shown to be species specific for cattle and does not infect people. Coronaviruses use special molecules called sialic acids to attach to the surface of cell membranes in the body, but other proteins are required for the viruses to actually enter the cells,” he says.

“Studies in the lab using human cells have shown that the bovine coronavirus can attach to human airway epithelial cells but are unable to actually enter the cells,” says Smith. Even though there are genetic similarities between the different strains of coronaviruses, most scientists believe that these viruses have very narrow host

ranges. Past epidemics of coronavirus in humans have included animal vectors such as pigs, chickens, ducks, and camels, but not cattle.

The latest human outbreak is caused by a strain called Wuhan coronavirus. It seems to have originated from Wuhan, a large city in central China. “In 2003, there was a major coronavirus outbreak called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS. That particular virus originated in China during late 2002 and spread globally in 2003. There were approximately 8,100 confirmed cases of SARS across 26 countries with about 775 deaths due to the virus,” says Smith.

Another coronavirus outbreak called Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) originated in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and resulted in 850 deaths.

“We still don’t fully understand where all these respiratory coronaviruses originated, but they probably moved into humans from animals. For example, the SARS virus originated in bats and then mutated to infect cats before moving into humans. With MERS, scientists believe the virus went from bats to camels to people,” says Smith.

We don’t really know where the new Wuhan virus originated, but recent evidence suggests that it moved from bats into a rare animal--the Malayan pangolin. Smith says this armadillo-like species is popular in traditional Chinese medicine and is sold at the Wuhan Seafood Market where the virus was originally isolated. We hope that the current spread of this disease in humans can be halted, but in the meantime people can rest assured that they cannot get this virus from cattle.

Calling for Nominations for the TLBAA Special Awards The TLBAA special year end awards will be presented during the annual meeting held during Texas Longhorn Weekend in January 2021. All TLBAA active members are encouraged to nominate fellow breeders for these special honors. Nominees will each be verified as active TLBAA members in good standing. Nominations must be in a written format and will include why/how the individual nominated fulfills the criteria of the award. An individual can only be nominated for one award each year. All nominees received and verified will be listed in the November TRAILS, and you the members, will be selecting the overall award winners. Deadline for nomination submissions is September 15, 2020, 5 pm CST. Nominations should be emailed to awards@tlbaa.org. If unable to email, you may fax or mail to the TLBAA office. Think about who you know that deserves to be recognized for a year end award.

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program.

This award is named after native Texan, Dave Evans, who entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch.

Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountain & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years.

From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger JP in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned.

Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder.

Jack Phillips Award The Jack Phillips Award honors individuals who have worked selflessly for the Texas Longhorn and breeders alike, without recognition. This award is named after former TLBAA President Jack Phillips who was a quiet, yet forceful presence in the TLBAA. It is hoped that Affiliate Presidents will encourage their members to nominate individuals who have fulfilled this criteria but all members of the TLBAA are encouraged to makes nominations.

Elmer Parker Lifetime Award

Lifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its Breeders

The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for.

This award is named after Elmer Parker, who was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd.

Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century.

The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors.

Mel Raley Rising Star The Mel Raley Rising Star Award is a special recognition awarded to those who have been an active member of the TLBAA for less than five years and through involvement and sustained enthusiasm have made a positive impact on their peers and on the Longhorn breed.

This award is named after Mel Raley, who will always be remembered as a shining star for the TLBAA because of his ability to share his vast knowledge of the Longhorn breed with new members.

Texas Longhorn Hall Of Fame

Nominations Being Accepted for Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame The purpose of the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is to preserve the great history of the Texas Longhorn cattle breed and to recognize individuals who have had the greatest impact and influence on the breed. Induction into the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual, whose contributions and commitment have truly shaped the breed.

NOMINATION CRITERIA Any TLBAA member in good standing may submit a nomination. Nominee must have been an outstanding contributor over a period of years either as a breeder, competitor or contributor to the Texas Longhorn breed. The nominee should have been or is currently a member of the TLBAA. A nominee may be either living or deceased.

NOMINATION PROCESS Nomination of an individual must be submitted using the form provided by TLBAF. Incomplete nominations will not be accepted. Materials which may be included with the nomination form are photographs, newspaper or other publication clippings, multimedia items, URL addresses for online videos, competition records from the TLBAA’s HORNS system or other related organizations, reference letters from those who know or knew the nominee, a personal testament from the individual preparing the nomination, or relevant passages from books containing biographical information on the nominee. If these items are sent in, they will not be returned and will become a part of the archives. Nomination forms and supporting materials must be submitted UNBOUND on traditional letter size paper (8.5”x11”).

The nomination process considers individuals addressing the following criteria: a. Accomplishments in the Longhorn industry b. National importance within the Longhorn industry c. Contributions made to the Longhorn industry d. Enduring value or historical significance of accomplishments e. Personal qualities (integrity, character, uniqueness) Upon receiving a nomination, the TLBAF office will send acknowledgement. The acknowledgement of materials does NOT indicate a successful nomination. Nominations will be accepted year round; however, a nomination must be received by a deadline of September 15 of each year in order for the committee to consider for the following year. A nomination of a person may be reviewed by the Hall of Fame Committee each year for a maximum of three years; however, the nomination must be resubmitted each year. Upon the completion of the third year, if a nominee has not been selected for induction, then the nominator must wait two complete calendar years before resubmitting that particular nominee to the Hall of Fame Committee for consideration.

The Hall of Fame Committee, by a majority vote will select the inductees and be confirmed by a majority vote of the TLBAF Board.

INDUCTION CEREMONY An induction ceremony will take place annually at the Hall of Fame banquet, co-hosted by the TLBAF and the TLBAA. Inductees will receive appropriate recognition and awards at the banquet. Inductee will also be showcased in the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame section of the TLBAF Museum (once the building is complete).

AFFILIATE UPDATES We continue to search for ways to host an in person meeting and our jackpot but most avenues have been closed to us. We will wait and see if Ron Walker’s sale in November is going to happen and if so, he has graciously invited us to host our meeting and heifer jackpot in conjunction with his sale in Oyen. The Directors will decide if this is workable and information DEB LESYK will be on our Facebook page and our website.

PRESIDENT 306-867-9427 Seems that rain has been plentiful for many of our members, a few are in dry areas, a few in overly saturated areas, but the hay crop overall seems positive. Bull sales were good for the spring and early summer and most have their herd sires in their pastures and busy. Stay safe and stay healthy.
