This posh yet minimalist hotel opened in early July 2018 in the hip West Village near Uptown Dallas. The walkable area is full of shopping and dining, so the Hilton brand has filled a need with this new hotel. With its orange brand, Canopy’s signature style is urban and slick.

The lobby is inviting with its workspaces, plush living room feel and wide open bar beckoning you to sit a spell and have a cold drink. Or, head up to the top floor (8th) for a cocktail and appetizer at Upside.

One of the most Instagrammable skylines in Dallas, the outside patio will be ideal in the fall. During the 108-degree day we visited, we cowered indoors with pretty-in-pink cocktails, edible flowers and yummy bites.

The rooms at Canopy include a patio, laminate flooring with an ample rug, luxe bedding and a large flatscreen TV. I liked the crisp, minimal feel of the room and the barn door that separates the bedroom from the bathroom vanity—which really comes in handy when one of you is an early riser and the other isn’t.

About a mile from Canopy, treat yourself to a refined steakhouse dinner at Ocean Prime, where your biggest problem is deciding between steak or seafood. Or, you can do as we did, and try both the prime rib and the perfectly seared sea bass over a bed of mashed potatoes.

The Franciscan cabernet paired surprisingly well with both and was the ideal match for the chocolate peanut butter pie as the encore. You really can’t beat the ambiance of Ocean Prime for a quiet date night.

The Stoneleigh A Le Méridien property that has entertained and wooed guests for 95 years holds court in the heart of Uptown Dallas. The Stoneleigh sits in all its glory on Maple Avenue, the entrance—flanked by stone lions—embodies an early 1900s upscale Dallas hotel.

The stylish lobby invites with a few seating areas, bookcases and a happening lobby bar. Rooms perfectly blend the old and the new with spacious floor plans, the latest bedding, modern lamps and black and white tiled bathrooms. I loved the royal blue design of our room, tying in wallpaper, chairs and accent designs.

Do not leave without enjoying a bountiful breakfast at their new restaurant, Perle on Maple. Choose the buffet or order from a menu that highlights down-home Texas flavors, accented by fresh ingredients.

We enjoyed the Ranch Hand Benedict and a spread of homestyle biscuits and gravy, with home fries and scrambled eggs. Pair that with the day’s paper and a pot of coffee and you won’t want to leave!

Try the Gulf crab and avocado lettuce wraps or their Pappas Bravas, little bites of crispy potato heaven. The PB&J is not what you’d imagine; it’s sous vide pork belly, jalapeno pecan jelly glaze, jicama slaw and croustades. Having a Blast Literally! with Military History Former Green Beret masterminds the world’s only live-fire tank adventure range

hinking we were visiting a playground for testosterone-fueled onepercenters searching for their next macho thrill, we surprisingly found the crown jewel of interactive museums fit for every age and gender. Experiencing Drivetanks will span the senses: from the rush of shooting all manner of guns, firing flamethrowers and driving tanks to the heartfelt appreciation for the patriotism, courage and sacrifices of the Greatest Generation, beautifully presented in this top-notch museum.

The 14 tanks and track vehicles, wall of weapons, shooting ranges, mile-long tank course and museum are all situated on the picturesque 18,000-acre Ox Ranch, two hours west of San Antonio in the northwest corner of Uvalde County. (There’s also a private airstrip if you want to fly to the ranch.)

Free-roaming exotic game adds a serene safari contrast to the loud, adrenaline-filled tank and artillery experience. Friendly kangaroos at the main lodge greet guests, a quirky ostrich at the booby-trapped Caen shooting range allows you close enough to pet it as Père David's deer peacefully wade in the creek, undisturbed by the approaching Sherman tank.

Todd DeGidio, a former Green Beret and Houston Police helicopter pilot, is the mastermind behind Drivetanks and is in partnership with Brent Oxley, owner of Ox Ranch. DeGidio has created an incomparable interactive experience designed to engage weekend warriors on all levels.

Exhibits in the museum are sensitively arranged, labeled and explained.

You’ll see authentic WWII yellow-starred armbands, which Jews were forced to wear, as well as a Nazi flag hanging from the ceiling with its evil swastika. Stalin memorabilia is on display in the Russian corner and the prominent blood-red circle of the Japanese flag flies on the wall above an execution pistol. The headline in a vintage newspaper (“Japs Attack U.S. Pearl Harbor, Manila Hit”) strikes the heart. Chests will swell with pride as you tour the American display and Patton Lounge, which reflect the courage of young men who lied about their age in order to be sent to the front.

To see the exhibits in context instills a greater connection to the encounters of troops fighting a monumental war. Tip: watch “Fury” prior to your visit to make your tour even more meaningful.

DeGidio is quick to defer accolades for the operation to his passionate and talented team members, who flawlessly restore the tanks and guns, manufacture all of the discontinued ammunition, and also serve as museum curators and docents with unmatched customer service and knowledge of military history. Many of them, like DeGidio, live on the sprawling ranch with their families, immersed in the lifestyle they love to share.

They follow their motto, “Find it, fix it, fire it!” when acquiring vintage tanks and guns. Tanks are purchased, transported in pieces and restored on-site. Surprisingly, anyone may own a tank as long as it is properly demilitarized, but Drivetanks is certified and heavily audited by the ATF to retain working tanks and firearms for the public to use.

In addition to all the activities and learning opportunities, DeGidio and his team have created lodging to resemble campaign headquarters barracks, just beyond the ‘minefield,’ complete with period furnishings, sandbags and defensive artillery for any potential enemy breach.

Sergeant Carlos will delight you with tasty chow from his mess wagon and you can even sound the wind-up air horn to signal ‘incoming fire.’

Visitors have come from as far away as Australia, Germany and Russia for this exclusive experience and range from soccer moms with kids to machismo-men with compadres. Even the disabled are accommodated in a track-powered wheelchair. By year-end, the plan is to add seven more tanks and an “Explosive Experience,” giving guests the ability to detonate and watch explosions from behind a clear protective enclosure.

As a travel writer with three kids, who often travel along with us, I was glued to Tracey Carisch’s travel memoir, Excess Baggage (August 2018, She Writes Press). Tracey was a successful business woman with a master’s degree and a full-time job. She was being run ragged between work, kids, their activities, home… the list goes on and on.

Then, one night at happy hour with girlfriends, she realized she was tired of the rat race. After discussing it with her husband, who was equally tired, they decided to pull their three daughters out of school, sell everything and travel the world.

Tracey desperately wanted more out of this life—more for her daughters, and to do more for others. In Excess Baggage, we get to travel along with Tracey and her family as they volunteer, eat strange but delicious food, converse in various languages and navigate their way through 24 countries over the span of 18

months. In her search for balance and meaning, Tracey learns some momentous life lessons and gives her children an educational journey into the world’s cultures like no other.

Tracey’s travel memoir inspired me on so many levels: to let go of the unnecessary, to find joy in the little things, to open myself up to those I don’t know, to venture far and wide with my kids and to live like there’s no tomorrow. These things are easier said than done but after reading Excess Baggage, I find myself thinking about Tracey’s words nearly every day. Whether it’s reminding myself to laugh with my kids about silly things, offering a helping hand to a stranger, or even remembering that the rat race is for rats, not humans—I’m thankful I had the chance to read this book. It’s life-changing in the simplest of ways. Not to mention, Tracey is a gifted writer who had me laughing out loud in many parts. I chuckled at some of her family’s experiences and my heart broke with them at others.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

I

t’s the biggest single structure made from living organisms on the planet, so large that it can be seen from outer space. The world’s largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef is made up of more than 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands, stretching over 1,400 miles off the coast of Australia.

It’s a bucket list destination for many, and a long-time travel dream that I finally got to fulfill. After spending a fun 10 days in the dynamic cities of Sydney and Brisbane, we hopped on a flight north to Cairns, an oceanside city in Queensland that is the gateway to the reef for most visitors. I found tons to do from restaurants and shopping to outdoor activities and cultural attractions. We actually stayed a few minutes north of Cairns, at Machans Beach.

DAY REEF ADVENTURES FROM CAIRNS Called “Australia’s great natural wonder,” the Great Barrier Reef was named a World Heritage Site in 1981, and labeled one of seven natural wonders of the world. It supports a huge diversity of life, and the excitement of witnessing that up close through diving and snorkeling is an opportunity that’s hard for nature-lovers to pass up.

Even if you don’t dive or swim, there are ways to experience the reef, including submarine-like viewing pods, glass-bottom pontoon boats, kayaks and more.

There are lots of tour operators out of Cairns with a variety of day trips to the reef, catering to those short on time or money and also those looking for a unique experience.

I took off with Raging Thunder for their Fitzroy Island Adventure, a full-day tour that visits Fitzroy, which was once part of the mainland, via a one-hour catamaran ride. Once on the island, you can get snorkel gear to go out on your own or a guided snorkel tour. Other options include a combination sea kayak and snorkel tour, along with snuba—a newish water sport that allows people to experience diving short distances underwater while connected at all times by an air hose to the tank at the surface.

I started my day at Fitzroy by walking through the rainforest for about 20 minutes to Nudey Beach (not named that for the reason you’re thinking). This is a beautiful, white coral beach with little bays and places to snorkel, though there isn’t as much to see here as around the other side of the island, where big rocks host a lot more reef life.

Tip: Take water shoes if you visit the reef. The beaches are largely made of broken-off bits of coral, which can really hurt your feet to walk on.

I was amazed at how beautifully aquamarine the water is, how pristine and white the beaches are, how lush and green the trees and other flora are. After some time at Nudey Beach, I walked back around

to the main pier and Raging Thunder’s activity hut to pick up the box lunch provided. After my picnic at the water’s edge, I snorkeled among rocks where the sea life was plentiful, with lots of parrot fish, clown fish and some of the biggest brain and cabbage coral I’ve ever seen. I even saw a shark—a small white tip reef shark, about three feet long, who shyly zipped away a moment after I started following it.

Stand-up paddleboards, a water trampoline and glass-bottom boat tour were also available for us while at Fitzroy.

Half-day tour: AUS$79 Full-day tour: AUS$84 (a much better bargain) Multi-night Live-aboard Dive Trips I’m not a huge diver, so day trips and short introductory dives are more my thing. But my partner Keith did a three-night live-aboard dive trip with Divers Den, and had a great time. They’re one of the more reasonably priced operators in the area, and Keith was very impressed by their professionalism, skill and knowledge. They also offer snorkel trips, introductory diver trips, and PADI certification courses.

Keith took the Ocean Quest boat, which has flexible itineraries with daily access to and from the mainland via a shuttle boat. While he was on his itinerary, other guests would come and leave on various days according to their own itineraries. The biggest highlights for

him were seeing many, many sharks on night dives, and having a sea turtle climb up onto him during a daytime dive.

A magical experience available in these waters is witnessing the annual migration of the dwarf minke whale, a new species of whale discovered in 1981. Between May and August, only 700 people in the world have the opportunity to witness these whales congregate in the remote Ribbon Reefs — and nowhere else on earth. Several dive operators offer these excursions, including Divers Den. EXPLORING THE QUEENSLAND RAINFOREST When you’re not in the water, there are a lot of other incredible attractions around Cairns. Probably the best land experience we had was our rainforest trip. Tucked beside the ocean with its great reef, the tropical rainforest covers more than 900,000 hectares and is millions of years old — a combination that offers some of the most breathtaking natural beauty to be found.

We took the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to Kuranda, an artsy village in the middle of the forest. The Skyrail is a unique opportunity to get a bird’s-eye view. The cable cars stop twice before reaching Kuranda, and at these stops you can get off and walk along a path and boardwalks for incredible overlooks. Rangers also give guided walks at the stations.

In Kuranda, take some time to walk to the end of town, where you’ll come to the Original Rainforest Market. It’s full of quirky little cafes and stalls selling all manner of handmade items, from clothing and jewelry to soaps and artwork. There’s also a koala sanctuary nearby.

To go back, we elected to take the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

Doing the Skyrail one way and the train the other makes for a varied and fun day. The railway was established in 1891 and the refurbished railway cars definitely have that heritage feel. Rising from sea level to 328 meters, the journey winds through a tropical paradise framed by rugged mountains with waterfalls tumbling forever into deep ravines.

I took an hour flight from Cairns to Hamilton Island, to arrive at Qualia Resort.

The largest of the inhabited Whitsunday Islands, Hamilton Island makes a great base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef. It’s surrounded by a kaleidoscope of pristine beaches, coral and marine life. Situated atop a bluff with amazing views across the island and water, Qualia Resort evokes luxury and privacy all the way. This peaceful oasis is the perfect spot to melt any stress away.

WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS

I spent the first day doing nothing but enjoying the pool, spa and my villa at Qualia, driving my buggy around to see the island, and ending with a sunset cruise around the islands. I spent my second day at the reef with Cruise Whitsundays, a run-like-clockwork operator that offers full-day and overnight excursions, as well as day cruises to world-famous Whitehaven Beach and other tours around Hamilton Island.

This stunningly beautiful chain of 74 islands, mostly uninhabited national park islands, is a completely different way to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Located in the heart of the reef on the Queensland coast, four islands offer a variety of accommodation, all with fringing coral reefs at their doorstep.

Boarding the ferry from Hamilton pier, it was two hours and 39 nautical miles out to the company’s own anchored air-conditioned pontoon boat at Hardy Reef, with amenities such as undercover seating and tables, sun decks for topping up the tan, freshwater showers and changing rooms. Most importantly, there’s access to

seeing the reef and its life: diving, snorkeling, a submarine with glass viewing windows that takes guests around the reef, and even an underwater viewing station. All of this makes the reef and its life viewable to just about anyone of any capability, even those who don’t get in the water.

A coral wall, home to an ecosystem of magnificent corals and marine life, runs adjacent to the pontoon. Hundreds of fish species gather here – it’s common to see tusk fish, cuttlefish, morays, barracudas, unicorn fish, surgeonfish, angelfish, starfish, feather stars and much more.

Thanks to the Cruise Whitsundays Introductory Dive experience, you don’t need to be certified to dive. I’m not, although I have been diving before in similar “learn to dive” programs. With this intro package, even people who have never been diving before or are nervous about it can feel at ease. All of our equipment was provided and taken care of, and the instructor guides were with us at all times, at a ratio of two divers per guide — meaning they are even available to hold your hand if you need it! The reef was vibrant, and immediately tropical fish surrounded us. It was really magical under the water.

Paronella Park, about an hour-and-a-half drive from Cairns, is a delightful place with an enchanting story. On 5 hectares beside Mena Creek Falls José Paronella built a castle, picnic area by the falls, tennis courts, bridges, a tunnel, and wrapped it up in a lush rainforest.

Rusty’s Fruit Market is a must-do in Cairns. Open every Friday through Sunday, it’s a large covered, open-air market selling the best tropical fruit you can find, along with all kinds of other foods, stalls selling everything from handmade jewelry and clothing imported from Asia, and some fantastic coffee and food stands.

Great Barrier Reef Drive is a beautiful coastal day trip of a drive to Palm Cove and Port Douglas, where you can stop at any number of virtually deserted white-sand beaches.

The iconic, award-winning museum, opened in 2013, is built around an old dry dock and was designed by the internationally renowned architecture company Bjarke Ingels Group.

Leaving the 60-year-old dock walls untouched, the exhibit areas have been placed below ground and arranged in a continuous loop around the dry dock walls – making the dock the innovative centerpiece of the museum. This has created what has been called “a beautiful hole in the ground,” — an open, outdoor area where visitors can experience firsthand the reality and scale of ship building.

ven if you’re not an architecture buff, a quick glance tells you that the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the country.

Located at the UNESCO World Heritage site in Elsinore (“Helsingor” in Danish), and just north of Copenhagen, it is also neighbors with one of Denmark’s most important historical buildings, the towering Kronborg Castle.

(Known by many as “Hamlet’s castle,” Kronborg has long been one of the country’s greatest tourist destinations.)

With its carefully designed flow and thoughtful exhibits, the museum feels relevant and inclusive. Without you even realizing, the museum takes you lightly by the hand to tell the story of Denmark as a leading seafaring nation—-from its history to modern day.

The emphasis throughout is on the visual. A model of a coal-carrying freighter sits above a glass case full of its black, sooty cargo. A passenger liner sits atop old suitcases, while bags of mail make it clear the role of the ship sitting above them.

Large-scale film projections and evocative soundscapes, such as the sound of crashing waves, highlight and add perspective to many of the exhibits. Youngsters are drawn in by the interactive installations and games around every corner.

The Danish crown jewels may be on display in Copenhagen’s Rosenborg Castle, however you will not regret making the easy trip north to Elsinore to visit this crown jewel of a museum.

THE MAKING OF A MUSEUM What visitors to the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark don’t see is what the architects called the “mixture between archeology and spacecraft design” that went into creating the museum. Building a museum below sea level took construction techniques that had never been used in Denmark before.

The old concrete dock, with its 5 feet thick walls and 8 feet thick floor, had to be cut open and reassembled. The steel bridges that now cross the dock, were produced in giant sections on a Chinese steel wharf and transported to Denmark on the biggest ship that had ever docked in Elsinore. The steel sections weighed up to 100 tons each, and were lifted on site by the two largest mobile cranes in northern Europe. Over 400 ground anchors were drilled 42 meters into the ground to secure the floor – making the museum the tallest museum in Denmark, even though it’s almost invisible from the outside.

While at the 2018 Maui Jim Ocean Shootout, I stayed at the Kā'anapali Beach Hotel, where I was immersed in a true Hawaiian experience. Located on the northwest side of Maui, a few miles from the quaint town of Lahaina, the Kā'anapali Beach Hotel (KBH) is the second oldest hotel on Kā'anapali Beach. There’s a somewhat secret lookout on the hotel’s sixth floor, which shows off some of the phenomenal views. The ocean and sandy beach sit on one side and lush green rainforests covering the West Maui mountains (Maui Komohana) sit on the other.

The hotel is beautiful, although the staff and the experience they create is what makes KBH so special. Every single staff member, whether they were a waiter at breakfast, a bartender or part of the front desk staff, made an effort to ensure my stay was exceptional. Once you are a guest at KBH, you become part of their ‘ohana (family). As they leave the hotel, each guest is given a kukui nut lei during a ceremony to remind you you’re part of their ‘ohana. For each return visit to KBH, they will place a new kukui nut on your necklace.

In 1986, the Poʻokela (excellence) program was created to teach guests about the Hawaiian culture, including its geography, technology, agriculture and more. The innovative program has been a huge success for KBH, with the Waiaha Foundation naming KBH “Hawaiʻi's Most Hawaiian Hotel.”

You’ll find a huge variety of complimentary daily activities at the Hale Hoʻokipa (cultural center), including 'ukulele and hula lessons, kukui bracelet and lei making. In one of the many activities I took part in, we learned how to make a kaula, which is similar to a rope and used to bind materials together. This skill has been practiced for centuries in Hawaii.

Hale Huaka’i is KBH’s water activity center where you’ll find it easy to discover all types of ocean fun including paddle boards, snorkels and boogie boards. As an outdoor enthusiast, Hale Huaka’i was the highlight of my trip.

Every day, the center’s manager spent a few hours showing us the ins and outs of the activity center and Kāʻanapali Beach. He taught us to paddleboard and to use a sailing outrigger canoe—which has a floating support on one side (the outrigger). They’re serious about their water sports at KBH, with their own team that races the sailing outrigger canoes. The team even participated in a few short races around the island as part of the Maui Jim Shootout.

The water lapping under the 62-foot catamaran gently rocks us awake.

In our quiet stateroom—one of four guest cabins on board—the sun is barely peeking through the hatch cover we left slightly open after stargazing the night before. Emanating from the salon up top, we catch the first whiffs of Capt. Dennis’ French press coffee and the heavenly aroma of banana pancakes on the griddle in first mate/ chef Stephanie’s tiny galley.

Sailors of all stripes have long been drawn to these islands, from Spaniards seeking to colonize them, to pirates like Henry Morgan and Blackbeard and explorers Columbus and Sir Francis Drake, to today’s charter boats which now comprise the predominant revenue source. The 2017 hurricane season took its toll on the BVI along with its land-based tourism and sailing charter industry. Nearly a year later, the customs and immigration office at Soper’s Hole/West End, Tortola, still is little more than a table and chairs shaded by a blue camp tarp. Those blue-tarp makeshift roofs dot the hillsides on most every inhabited island. On the other side of Tortola in Road Town, the BVI’s capital and hub of commerce, street lights still dangle precariously from half-standing light poles.

The recovery is slow. Labor is in short supply, as workers too struggle to find housing. Unlike the U.S. mainland areas hit by those same storms, there is no Home Depot down the street. Building materials here must be shipped in on cargo ships their passage is a daily site in the Sir Francis Drake Channel and that adds time and money to the rebuilding process.

And so starts another day in the British Virgin Islands. Just don’t ask us what day, date or time it is. Here in paradise, a visitor can lose track of time and (gasp!) forget they even own a cell phone.

But these are resilient people, indeed their motto is BVI Strong, and rebuilding is evident at every anchorage. Increasingly hotels, restaurants and beach bars are coming back to life, charter boats have been repaired, the waters and beaches remain breathtaking. The visitors who wisely didn’t cancel their planned BVI vacations after the storm are the fortunate recipients of a trip of a lifetime.

We have Christopher Columbus to thank for discovering the BVI in 1493 on his second voyage to find the New World. But after a week of sailing these aquamarine waters, exploring deserted white sand beaches and being lulled into complete relaxation by soothing trade winds, we marvel that the rest of the New World was ever discovered at all.

With dozens of islands to navigate, the best way to maximize your time and see as much as possible on a BVI sailing trip is on a crewed charter boat. Catamarans are the predominant sailing vessels, providing

greater stability and more space than a typical monohull. A 62-foot boat like the More Amore offers more than 2,000 feet of interior living space and that much or more outside space beckons on the aft eating deck and sunning space on the fore deck. Climb a few stairs— they can be slippery—and grab one of the four oversized bean bags under a shade awning for a bird’s eye view from the skipper’s helm.

If you aren’t diving or snorkeling later, the first mate might deliver up a fresh batch of mimosas or Bloody Mary’s for the morning’s sail to whatever destination is on the day’s itinerary. For those so inclined to sail, the captain is happy to share the wheel.

If you are envisioning an on-water equivalent of rustic camping, think again. These boats have all the luxuries of a five-star hotel, packaged in your own private setting. Charter crews pride themselves on their gourmet menus. From galleys the fraction of a home kitchen’s size, and with limited cooktop/oven space and storage capacity, these chefs whip up meals worthy of James Beard award-winning status. Meal presentation is just as elaborate, with fruit centerpieces made into all manner of beachy designs and a different color-themed place setting for each meal. When we suggested using paper plates to make the work easier for our crew, we were quickly dismissed. “This is not a paper-plate boat,” the captain quipped.

On our charter of eight guests, some were certified divers, others only interested in snorkeling or swimming. Some enjoyed hiking and exploring on land; others were happy reading a book while lounging on the oversized trampoline on the bow. Good communication with the crew in advance of arrival helps the captain plan a general itinerary and sailing route to make the most of each day.

What began as a “what was your favorite thing so far” roundtable over dessert each night soon had to be expanded to plural answers, as each previous day’s best experiences were topped by the subsequent days’ exploits. If you are considering a BVI charter, here are a few crowd picks that consistently made the favorites list:

Probably amongst the top five most popular dive and snorkeling sites in the BVI, these four rock outcroppings near Norman Island are home to abundant sea life in waters shallow enough for snorkelers to enjoy.

An underwater cave lies about 10 feet below, and with a maximum depth at about 50 feet, the Indians make an ideal first BVI dive. Diving alongside a P.A.D.I. Dive Master—many charter captains or crew members are certified master divers with extensive experience—brings greater safety and a comfort level to visitors exploring unknown waters.

For our nine days of adventure, Capt. Dennis welcomed us dockside and led us to our awaiting home-away-from-home in Red Hook Marina on St. Thomas. There, we were greeted with a fresh batch of Painkillers as we got a tour of the boat and the all-important safety briefing. Later, after dinner ashore, we talked through the general itinerary, always contingent on wind and weather of course, and laid out a game plan for the next day. This became the pattern over the nine-day charter: share favorites from the trip so far, and plan everso-loosely the next day’s adventures. Over the course of our charter,

BVI comprise four main islands—Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada—and another 50+ smaller ones, a few of which are uninhabited. They present the sailor with literally unlimited options, far too many to be explored in a single vacation. If you are sailing with a group, it’s likely that each person has a different wish list for the trip, so early and frequent communication is important.

The goal is to plan a charter that makes each guest feel as though it is their trip of a lifetime.

The BVI National Park Service calls The Baths on Virgin Gorda a “geological wonder comprised of awe-inspiring granite boulders, which form sheltered sea pools on the beach's edge.” An easy hike down a sand path opens onto the pristine bluewater-protected Devil’s Bay. If you can bring yourself to leave its refreshing water, meander through the 40-foot boulders in sometimes waist-deep rock pools, then scale a series of ladders and ropes that deposit you at the Bath’s white-sand beach with beach bar and thatched-roof palapa shops. Make your way back up the trail for lunch at The Top of the Baths.

While waiting for your lobster salad and conch fritters, take a dip in the pool with its panoramic Caribbean vista.

The northernmost island in the BVI chain, Anegada’s nearly flat elevation is in stark contrast to the other islands’ peaks and outcroppings. Surrounded by 18 miles of coral reef, Anegada’s beaches offer calm swimming in crystalline waters. Like many visitors, we rented scooters for a day of exploring those beaches.

Our first stop was an overlook platform, from which visitors can view the island’s Caribbean flamingoes which make the island’s salt ponds their home.

From there, stop in the open air Cow Wreck Beach Bar where your pina coladas are on the honor system. Join a young local for a spirited game of Guests and first mate prepare to darts, linger in one of the colorful Adirondack chairs moor in the evening’s anchorage. along the beach and take a dip in the beckoning water. Be sure to visit the gift shop down the sandy path, where you’ll find photos of recent visitors like to the beach, and return when you’re ready for pick up. Word of caution: the roads on Anegada are a mix of deep sand and asphalt and can be challenging to navigate on scooters, especially if the island has had little rain. For a less-challenging option, jeep rentals are also available.

Known as the home of the original Painkiller – the BVI’s concoction of rum and juices topped off with nutmeg – the Soggy Dollar is back in operation after extensive hurricane damage. Charter boats claim their anchorage early in the day (by 11 am, the harbor was full) for swim-in access to this popular beach bar. Grab a picnic table or Adirondack chair, and settle in for an afternoon of fun. No room to anchor? Your charter captain can dingy your group directly

you on arrival. While the setting offers lots to do including its infamous Soggy Dollar Ring Game – the best part of this afternoon can be simply doing nothing.

An uninhabited and quiet island may be just the antidote to a day at the Soggy Dollar. With its 14 acres of nature preserve land originally donated by the late philanthropist Lawrence Rockefeller, Sandy Cay delivers solitude and untouched beauty. Sandy Cay lies between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. A sandy but well-maintained trail rises from the palm-tree lined beach to the island’s cliffs where you’ll be treated to a breathtaking 360-degree view. The island is home to several species of trees, shore birds and reptiles, and even leatherback sea turtle nests in some years.

But not all its beauty lies ashore. If time allows, don your snorkel gear for a glimpse at Staghorn and Elkhorn coral and an array of fish which inhabit the reef just off the shoreline.

Tips for a Great Trip

If you are island dreaming, keep in mind these tips to help ensure a great trip:

Numerous charter companies and brokers offer help in choosing the right boat for your charter.

Experienced sailors who don’t mind doing all the work - and having responsibility for a million-dollar-plus vessel - may opt for a bareboat charter. Food and supplies can be pre-arranged through provisioning companies or the charter company. A captain’s sailing resume is required, and most also require a check-out sail to verify the boat is in good hands before allowing her to leave port.

Those who prefer to leave the work and responsibility to others opt for a crewed charter, as we did. A “sleep aboard” first night is a good option for groups after a long day’s travels, enabling you to unpack

luggage, get acquainted with the boat and crew, and get a good night’s rest before setting sail the next morning.

Being on a sailboat for a week or two is not the time to spring surprises on your travelers, or on the crew working to exceed your expectations. Be sure to fully communicate the interests, likes and dislikes of the group you are sailing with. Crewed charters provide guests with a preference sheet—ours was a 10-page booklet—for specifying everything from what activities you enjoy to what foods and drinks you like and dislike, the music you listen to and any special needs or requests (an anniversary or birthday to be celebrated, for example).

Even the largest charter boats have limited storage space. Pack in carry-on duffle bags that can be easily stowed away in your cabin. Avoid the temptation to over-pack.

Your daily wardrobe will consist of swimsuits and cover ups so bring all that you have. Otherwise, throw in a few pairs of shorts and tops, some flip flops and swim shoes, a hat or visor and you are set. If space allows, pack an empty bag for bringing home the purchases you are sure to make along the way.

On a day when the water isn’t choppy, you can head across Winding Bay to the small island of Sugar Cay (pronounced “key”).

Flippers Beach Bar is a great place to hang out by the water with a local beer or a beautiful fruity cocktail.

Order some avocado hummus and snack on a salad, sandwich or burger. In the rules and regulations, it says: “Flippers: cover-ups and shirts are recommended…but let’s be serious—it’s a beach bar.” Exactly!

For something a bit fancier, enjoy dinner at Cliff House. Ask for a table on the interior deck that overlooks Winding Bay. I highly recommend starting with the crab cake, the risotto appetizer or the avocado and shrimp salad. Make sure you take advantage of the fresh seafood on the menu for your entrĂŠe and pair with a crisp chardonnay.

If you're looking to go off property, you might want to check out Pete's Pub (with t-shirts hanging from the ceiling) and taste their signature drink, The Blaster. Enjoy a fresh fish like mahi mahi or grouper. The menu is small but fresh, and the floor is sand.

So, fly on over to The Bahamas and enjoy this pristine 2-mile stretch of beach. You just might realize that you need to call The Abaco Club your second home.

Speaking of exploring, a day island hopping is highly recommended. Climb to the top of the old Hope Town lighthouse next to the cholera cemetery on Elbow Cay, have lunch at Firefly Bar & Grill overlooking the beautiful blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and snorkel around the coral reefs.

Aruba One Happy Island Alex Temblador

The name evokes tropical images of white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and a serene environment conducive to relaxation. The image in your mind is not far off.

About 1.5 million people visit Aruba every year, and I was happy to count myself as one of them this year. Nicknamed “One Happy Island,” I had a front row seat to all that Aruba has to offer. Surprisingly, it reminded me of Texas in some ways. The locals and tourists are happy and pleasant, quick to start up a conversation. Furthermore, the island is the perfect place for adventure and wellness-focused activities, yet has a strong breeze off the ocean and a year-round temperature of about 88 degrees.

My stay in Aruba began at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in a top-floor suite with an ocean-view.

Spacious is an understatement, as I could have fit a family of four in the room, which came complete with a cozy bed, living room area, patio, and large bathroom with a double sink vanity and glass walk-in shower. My first night at the Aruba Marriott Resort began with a sushi meal at the Lobby Bar, a sleek and stylish area with white décor and vibrant atmosphere. I ate scrumptious rolls and sipped on a hibiscus margarita. It was my first taste of the delectable dining scene at the resort, and over the next few days my taste buds would explode.

Breakfast in La Vista was buffet-style with ocean views, offering freshly made juices and American and local breakfast choices.

Waves Beach Bar & Grill, located on the beach, is where I had a delicious lobster roll. It turns into Atardi in the evenings, a pop-up beach restaurant with tables mere feet from the water and a front-row seat to an Aruban sunset as you sip on wine and munch on fresh seafood dishes. The food was healthy and light – an uncommon vacation occurrence. It felt good not to be weighed down by heavy food as I explored the island.

A visit to the Aruba Aloe Factory and Museum brought knowledge and insight into the health benefits of aloe, and a little shopping spree of fantastic aloe-infused products, like an After Sun Lotion meant to rehydrate the skin after a long day in the Aruban (or Texan) sun. I swam with fish and over a WWII sunken ship with De Palms Tours, did a morning beach walk with a Happiness Expert from the Aruba Marriott and, with

the help of the hotel concierge, learned how to play beach tennis with a nationally ranked beach tennis star at MooMba Beach Bar & Restaurant. I had to refuel between all the activities, and I did so with the beautiful passion fruit acai bowl at Eduardo’s Beach Shack.

While it may seem like my visit to Aruba was spent running around the island, a lot of simple things made my stay complete. Things like laying out by the calm adults-only pool, watching the sunset on the beach, marveling at the clear turquoise waters, and eating pastechi, a Caribbean pastry with Gouda cheese baked inside.

There’s almost too much happiness and wellness to be had on one trip to the One Happy Island, and I plan on discovering more of it in the future. Next time, I’ll hike the Arikok National Park, explore the Guadirikiri cave and walk through the Tunnel of Love.

or two girls who are avid travelers but had never stepped foot on a cruise ship, the 44-hour cruise to try out Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) newest vessel, Bliss, was a great adventure on the high seas.

With each new ship, today’s cruise industry is figuring out ways to bring more thrills, more convenience, and more bliss to each cruise.

The use of technology is expanding with each new vessel and NCL has clearly upped their game with Bliss.

We were warned about the importance of making our meal reservations quickly, because with the number of people on board, restaurants fill up fast. So, the first use of technology we experienced was the touch screens in the hallways of each deck, where guests could make meal or activity reservations

Time for a little “do nothing?” Yes, please. The aqua park in mid-ship on deck 17 awaits with a lounging pool, DJ, open bar and plenty of deck chairs. Nearby is a kids’ pool and, just a deck up, you’ll find two water slides. One of the slides has a dramatic drop and spins you over the side of the boat!

Is gambling your thing? The boat heads out into international waters so that the casino can be humming non-stop. With all the drinks you can handle mixed with lights and gaming, you can bet your bottom dollar on staying busy.

For the younger gen, you’ll find Splash Academy (kids), Entourage (teens) and Guppies (6 months to age 3). And while they’re busy cruising on their own, adults can also enjoy the spa, fitness center, walking/ running track, or maybe some day drinking!

And, because there are no windows within Q , you might just feel like you’re home as the distinctive mesquite grill aroma wafts around and you listen to tunes like “Luckenbach, Texas” by Willie and the boys.

The meat is sourced from a farm in Texas, brought to the port and loaded aboard. Here, you’ll find a “Goldilocks” of brisket—not too fatty, not too dry, but just right. Also from the pit, you can relish pulled pork, beef short ribs, smoked sausage, turkey and chicken—all served with coleslaw, chunky potato salad, pinto beans, pickles and… jalapeno cheese cornbread!

T

he first thing I noticed when I saw the Bliss was the stunning marine art on the ship’s hull by artist Robert Wyland.

I first saw his work in Dallas, in 1999. His “Whaling Wall” was then number 82 of what would eventually be 100 life-sized marine paintings found around the country.

Wyland’s signature art on the exterior of the Bliss is called “Cruising With Whales,” and features a mother humpback whale and her calf—-a typical sight in Alaskan waters.

all summer long.) Through his artwork, Wyland aims to capture both the beauty of the Alaskan frontier and the importance of whale conservation, while paying homage to these majestic mammals.

While onboard the Bliss, we had the opportunity to attend a demonstration given

by Wyland and fellow marine wildlife artist and conservationist Guy Harvey. With great passion, the artists shared the techniques and brush strokes they use to bring the sea to life. Wyland has certainly won the

hearts of Norwegian Cruise Line and ocean lovers across the world through not only his art but also his water conservation efforts. With Norwegian’s daily operations encouraging the responsible use of water and the recycling of materials, Wyland’s values perfectly complement the company’s mission. “I can’t think of a more perfect canvas for a marine artist than Norwegian’s Bliss, and I hope my art inspires people to see the beauty in nature and hopefully work to preserve it,” said Wyland. ~ Dana Kent

ome people are adventurous travelers – wanting to explore all the sights, hike, ski, surf, and all the activities their destination offers. But my trip to W Punta de Mita in Mexico’s Nayarit, about 20 miles from the Puerto Vallarta airport, was quite different. The W Punta de Mita has adventures to explore, but my absolute favorite thing about this resort was their attention to service that made me feel completely content to do nothing but disconnect and relax.

As you pull into the resort, you drive past the huge W—signaling the R&R has begun. With a freshly squeezed juice and a cool washcloth, you’re off to check in. Walking into the lobby gives you a view straight past a bar and the pool and right into the Pacific Ocean.

The room I stayed in was one of the resort’s jungle rooms, where I fell asleep nightly to the sound of birds and tree frogs outside. It was decorated with beach vibes—a brightly colored, tasseled pillow and a wall accented with Frida Kahlo in a bikini carrying her surfboard. Most impressive was the wall of a window that opened to a huge balcony overlooking the resort with two colorful rockers.

By far my favorite place at W Punta de Mita was WET, the blue tiled pool that overlooks the ocean. As soon as I got there, someone was putting a towel on my chair (or canopied lounger if I so chose). I could sidle up to the end of the pool and watch surfers in the ocean while sipping on a fresh-pressed juice or one of their many signature cocktails. Then, when I was hungry, someone was around with a menu to offer me fresh-made ceviche or homemade guacamole.

The hotel offers surf lessons and surfboards to rent, as well as a fitness center for those guests who want to get some activity in. Their Away Spa allows for pamper time with a massage, facial or body scrub. For extra serenity, pop into one of the saunas for a little detox or the spa pools to cool off.

The food alone is a reason to stay at W Punta de Mita. Start the day at the Huichol-inspired Venazu restaurant for breakfast. Grab fresh fruit and just-made baked items from the buffet (or try their chilaquiles) and settle into one of the contemporary couches at a wooden table. Watch the tide rolling on the beach while you tuck into your first cup of coffee and fresh juice of the day.

Stop by Chevycheria for lunch where a 1950s Chevrolet truck has been converted into a bar; keep your feet in the sand while you try their Ceviche de Pescado – Punta de Mita’s coconut and spice-infused catch of the day.

Plan on Spice Market for dinner—Jean-George’s Asian street cuisine.

Served family style, enjoy spiced chicken samosas and Asian spiced fresh fish. Save room for a signature dessert like the toasted coconut cake.

For an out-of-this-world dining experience, Mesa1 is situated on its own island where diners sit around a massive tree trunk table for a private dinner for up to 18 people. It only serves one seating a night so get your name on the list to have a private chef make your customized menu for an evening you’ll never forget.

Not lying, it was hard to leave. My apartment pool doesn’t quite do the same as the view from WET did for me. I’ll be waiting on someone to bring me poolside guacamole until the day I can run back to the resort for another getaway.

A Tale of Two Colorado Ski Towns: Copper Mountain and Snowmass Choose the Best Fit or Visit Both

Copper Mountain: A Fan Favorite When I started telling people we were going to Copper Mountain, everyone who had been there had the same feedback: “It’s my favorite ski resort.” So, I was curious to learn why.

Cozy Condo Copper Mountain isn’t overrun with condos. Copper One in Center Village (between West and East Villages) is in the middle of all the action. Ask for “slope view” for one of the best vantage points a balcony can offer.

A 2-bedroom, 2-bath is just enough for a family of six or less because of the foldout sectional sofa in the living room. A full kitchen and table for six provides a sense of togetherness. After a full day skiing, it’s nice to relax, cook your own dinner, build a fire and enjoy a glass of wine or local craft beer. We also prefer to make our own breakfast in the condo before skiing so as not to add to the rushing around. (It’s already challenging enough getting a family of five dressed in layers and suited up for the slopes.)

Copper One is all about location, right next to the lifts.

It’s easy to go up to your condo for lunch and, when everyone else is huddling around a community fire for après ski, you can sit on your balcony and watch the resort fire up for the evening.

Slope Style Texans basically take over Copper Mountain during spring break; we met fellow Texans everywhere we went.

One reason to love Copper is because the slopes are organized by degree of difficulty. For example, you can find really easy green runs all over West Village, where the ski school is located. There, you’ll find two lifts, Kokomo and Union Creek Quad. From either of those lifts, you have access to a myriad of manageable greens.

From Center Village, you have American Eagle lift, which hits a variety of blue options and American Flyer, which leads to a nice selection of greens or blues.

From American Flyer, you can grab Rendezvous lift

and go to the top of Tucker Mountain and enjoy greens all the way down, a 3-4 mile adventure.

And, if you’re jonesin’ for more blues and blacks, get over to East Village where the shredders are playing.

Dining Decisions When you’re ready to enjoy a mountain meal, there are a variety of casual dining options.

Toast & Co. offers protein-packed breakfast options, like eggs Benedict or a 3-egg omelette, or sweet treats like pumpkin pancakes and berry smoothies.

Ten Mile Tavern is at the epicenter of Center Village, at the bottom of the slopes, and is a great place to chill for lunch. Enjoy a burger, a salad or pizza pie. It is a tavern, so you’ll want to pair it with a Colorado brew.

J.J’s in the East Village is a family-friendly grill that can accommodate large groups and takes reservations. Try some spicy chili, chicken strips or a warm melted sandwich. They have a full bar, as do most establishments in Copper.

T-Rex Grill on the mountain is ideal for a bluebird day, with its outdoor seating and a bar area called The Beach. Relax in folding Adirondack chairs on the snow for a different type of beach. Or, chomp on a cheeseburger on the sunny patio.

Action Packed In late 2017, the Rocky Mountain Coaster opened in Center Village, next to the American Flyer lift, and is a fun way to see the mountain from a different vantage point. Weather permitting, it’s open from 10am-6pm and costs $25 for one ride, for a single rider (children under nine ride with an adult). The 8-minute coaster excites without flips, but with lots of turns through the trees and over the slopes.

Woodward Barn was built to help people level up on the slopes. An intro lesson will get you comfortable jumping into foam pits, flying high on trampolines and flipping on mats. If you bring your ski or snowboard boots and helmet, you can level up to the pump track and then move up to the short ramp that launches into a foam pit, while on a snowboard with wheels.

You can also find tubing, sledding, a frozen lake for ice hockey, and shopping in Center Village. And don’t leave without a few divine mini donuts from Sugar Lips.

Texas sends a lot of tourists to Colorado, no matter the season. But, it’s most common for Texans to drive or fly over for ski season (Christmas break to spring break.) For this double resort trip, we flew direct on United from Austin to Denver, rented an SUV, and started our week in Copper Mountain.

Snowmass: Aspen’s Lesser-known Neighbor Snowmass is one of four mountains you can ski in the area; and far less known than its sister town, Aspen (about 20 minutes away). Snowmass Village encompasses two main areas, which locals refer to as “the mall” and “base camp.” In these two developments, which are a short 5-minute walk apart or a quick gondola ride from each other, you’ll find restaurants, bars, Four Mountain Sports (where you can rent your ski and snowboarding gear), and shopping. Snowmass, established in 1967, just celebrated its 50th snow season.

Cozy Condo Woodrun V are spacious luxury condos right behind the mall and the Village Express lift, making them ski in/ski out. After an easy check-in, expand to fit your split-level condo offering all the comforts of a threestory home. Ours was a 2-bedroom, 3-bath, with an extra living area offering a comfortable foldout sofa, easily sleeping our family of five.

The open kitchen with marble countertops and breakfast nook (with flat-screen TV) was our favorite room. Providing everything we could possibly need to cook any meal, and a view of the snow, we were content to spend our limited extra time here.

With carpeted rooms boasting luxe bedding and an uber-spacious master bath, not to mention full washer/dryer and foyer for wet boots, we could have stayed longer than three days. And, a necessity for après ski for our family is a dip in the hot tub. Woodrun V’s was directly behind our condo for easy access.

We were lucky enough to get 5 inches of snow dumped on Snowmass the night before our last day of skiing, which provided the ultimate day of pow pow skiing. We had a sprinkling of snow in the morning, which opened up to heavenly blue skies by the afternoon.

Dining Decisions Venga Venga is a hip Mexican cantina on the backside of Snowmass Village mall with a patio that looks out on the slopes and the Sky Cab gondola, which locals call “Skittles” because of its multi-colored cabs.

Enjoy tableside guacamole or skillet fries with an Aspen Brewing Co. blonde or margarita. It is the perfect location for après ski. Just across the way is Snowmass S’mores for the kids (3:30pm-4:30pm) so you can enjoy an adult beverage while the kids enjoy a sweet treat.

If you’re looking for a heartier dinner, upstairs at the mall you’ll find Slow Groovin’ BBQ , a locally owned joint with a pool hall interior but meats that please. Texans will want to start with the Willie Nelson poutine (fries covered in country gravy, brisket and pickled onions) paired with a Roaring Fork Beer Company Slaughterhouse lager. The family platter with four meats and two sides will be plenty for a family.

Base Camp Bar & Grill is centrally located and offers indoor/ outdoor seating. Warm up with white bean hummus and glass of bold cabernet. If you’re in the mood for something healthy, the kale and feta salad will deliver; but if you want something more solid, go for the turkey avocado club. And, ending the meal with the unique Brioche Nutella Sliders will have you ready for bed.

Action Packed

Slope Style The slopes are a short walk from the condos. Pop on your skis and head down a little hill to get on the Village Express lift. From this 6-person lift, you can access many of Snowmass’ green runs. Surprisingly, there are fewer than 10 green runs on this mountain; however, there are many easier blues, known as “cruisers.”

After you’ve warmed up on greens, take the Elk Camp Gondola up the mountain and ride down Funnel Bypass. Or, take the Elk Camp lift all the way to the top of the mountain for glorious views and ride blues like Bear Bottom or Gunner’s View back down to Elk Camp Restaurant where you can catch Adam’s Avenue (a blue cruiser) which ends up back at the condo.

The Breathtaker Mountain Coaster near Elk Camp Restaurant, is accessible from Elk Camp Gondola. You can purchase a block of time and ride as many times as you like (versus a per ride fee). After a slow ride to the top of the coaster, providing beautiful views of the Aspen trees amid the sunlight or sprinkling snow, you’ll hear screams of delight as you race downhill.

There are a variety of off-mountain activities like Snowmass’ VIK (Very Important Kids) program that includes cookie decorating and other indoor activities for tiny humans. Kids of all ages might enjoy a visit to the Discovery Center in the mall to learn about the area’s prehistoric mammoth findings.

This is the last town of size on your drive from Copper Mountain to Snowmass. To avoid paying higher prices for groceries and gas in Snowmass or Aspen, stop here for provisions.

Also between Copper & Snowmass, make a pit stop here at Northside Kitchen. It’s right next to a gas station so you can fill up, use the restroom and grab a bite. It’s a unique place, with a case of specially designed donuts right up front (trays full of seasonal designs and other funky choices like Fruity Pebbles), hearty diner grub, and an impressive wine on tap selection.

Plan at least an hour to stop in at Iron Mountain Hot Springs where you’ll find 16 natural mineral pools of varying temperatures, ranging from 99 to 108 degrees. There’s also a large freshwater family pool that’s heated to around 95 degrees and a café for lunch or drinks. $20 adults/$14 kids for a day pass

A Day in Denver If you’re flying out of Denver, don’t rush it. It’s a 4-hour drive from Snowmass, so spend a day/night in the Mile High City.

Stay: Halcyon, a Cherry Creek Hotel Halcyon (an adjective denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful) boasts a modern, hip vibe while paying homage to the ‘80s with real record players and vinyl records (we had Prince’s “Purple Rain”) to entertain in-room. The furnishings in our room also included an ‘80s Polaroid camera.

What’s To Love: »» The rooftop pool and hot tub with a view of the city. »» The first floor Gear Garage offering guests complimentary access to longboards, cruiser bikes, helmets, backpacks and even a Vespa scooter. Check them out at the front desk.

What’s New for You in New York City?

Texans love to take a bite out of the Big Apple in the fall and over the holidays. There’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the beautiful holiday lights and, of course, the ball drop for New Year’s Eve! Many of us have visited NYC dozens of times but continue to find new places and attractions. How many times have we jogged through Central Park, discovering new wonders each time?

L O C AT I O N , L O C AT I O N , L O C AT I O N No matter your politics, you won’t find a more spacious, luxurious hotel with an ideal location than the Trump International Hotel & Tower New York. Sitting on Columbus Circle at the corner of Central Park, this grand dame towers over the park, along with notable hotel sisters like The Plaza and The Sherry Netherland.

However, after going to NYC for over two decades, I’ve never before experienced spaciousness like this in Manhattan.

The hotel boasts one of the larger hotel gyms in New York with personal trainers on call (at an additional cost), an indoor saltwater pool, a relaxation room, and steam room and sauna available to guests at no charge. You can also get a mani/pedi at the spa if you need to freshen up for your big city visit.

Note: September through December is their high season so plan ahead.

With real estate at a premium in Manhattan, hotel rooms are typically of meager square footage. I was immediately charmed by the expansive Trump. Opened in 1997, it was the first of the Trump hotel properties.

The five-star hotel offers a Deluxe room that will please even the pickiest of travelers. With a recent renovation, bringing more stylish greys into all rooms, adding crown molding to the rooms and brushed nickel to the bathrooms, I couldn’t have been happier here. (Not to mention, I was steps away from my happy place—Central Park.)

If you’re in for a splurge, book an Executive Park View suite with glorious ten-foot floor-to-ceiling windows. This option includes a separate bedroom with private bath, a hallway, with a bathroom off to the side, leading to a full kitchen. A separate living area features a foldout couch and dining table. This is the suite life you’ve always imagined!

Classic Harbor Line offers unforgettable sunset sails on the Hudson River that show off this iconic city in a way that many visitors never get to see. Leaving from Chelsea Piers (easily accessible from midtown), guests are transported by yacht or schooner on a relaxing sail.

We recommend the Adirondack, an elegant, white-hulled, 80-foot, 1890s-style pilot schooner, which we heard later from a longtime New Yorker is the best of the fleet! With the wind at your back and a cheerful crew serving wine and beer and hoisting the gigantic white sails, you’ve got New York City on your left as you head out.

Its glass towers reflect the setting sun while steel skyscrapers peek in and out of the low clouds rolling in off the Upper Bay. To your right—the Statue of Liberty stands guard over the harbor, with its rainbow of private sailboats out for their own evening cruises. The views—and Instagram opps—are incomparable!

Once the sun went down and the air chilled, the crew passed out warm blankets for those of us who forgot jackets for the return trip back to the dock. Make this a must on your next visit!

New York City is one of the most visited places in the United States.

You’ve seen Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Central Park, but how about checking out the city that never sleeps from a new perspective?

Classic Harbor Line offers a view of the city as you’ve never seen it before.

The Milling Room is across from the American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side. Featuring seasonal locally-sourced American cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Phillip Kirschen-Clark, The Milling Room’s skylit dining room and lively tavern-inspired bar (complete with innovative cocktails) create a delightful oasis of beauty and luxury. Our friendly waitperson suggested the risotto, which – at the time of our visit – was filled with fresh sugar snap peas that were in season. The Rhode Island Red Chicken was another favorite, set off perfectly with garlic honey butter. And try the desserts that are specially created to match the season – if the Earl Grey ice cream is available, partake!

Even in the middle of Times Square, you might get a hankering for a taste of the South. The recently opened Opry City Stage — inspired by Nashville’s iconic Grand Ole Opry — delivers an authentic taste of country music and Music City itself throughout its four stories. Stroll around each floor to see hundreds of photos from the Opry’s nine decades of superstar performances – and check the website to see who is scheduled to perform. Luke Bryan (who recently topped the Forbes list of highest-paid country stars of 2018) was the first artist to grace their stage. The menu is filled with dishes you’d find in the South: fried green tomatoes, cornmeal-crusted catfish and even Nashville Hot Chicken! Try your burger with a hearty slather of pimento cheese (the Tennessean), and for a true Southern experience, your desert should be a slice of hummingbird cake – a moist treat packed with banana, pineapple and pecans.

Get to The Point!

illiam Avery Rockefeller owned several properties and The Point was one of his vacation camps (they began construction in 1929 and completed it in 1933). You might not be familiar with this term from the northeast, but camps are typically privately owned property, many times on a lake with housing (somewhat loosely analogous to a ranch in Texas). The Point, located on Upper Saranac Lake, is a time capsule of exterior and interior Adirondack great camp style.

The Point of it all The main reason guests return again and again is not the lakeside cozy setting; it’s not the delicious food served 24/7; it’s the people. The staff at The Point is made up of some of the friendliest folks (Texas-level friendly), there to satisfy your every whim. We jokingly said they anticipate your needs to the point of reading your mind (me sitting at breakfast table thinking I’d like another cup of coffee; server appears holding coffee).

The Point staff thrives on making your stay as relaxing as staying at your best friend’s lake house (but with five-star VIP treatment). I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know many of the team and missed them as soon as I left!

Rockefeller’s study is now the Algonquin room, and it’s cozy, filled with walls of books, two perfectly situated reading chairs and a comfy queen bed. We also enjoyed the door to the back terrace where we dined many times.

But if you’re looking for a more spacious suite, The Mohawk was the Rockefeller master bedroom, featuring a luxe king bed fit for “the princess and the pea,” two original reading chairs enjoyed by Rockefeller and his wife, a fireplace (which we used in July), a large bathroom spacious enough for a chair, and a door leading out to a private patio overlooking the lake.

One of the buildings houses the pub downstairs and three guest rooms. That building was originally their three-car garage; the original gas pump still sits outside. The pub houses a host of interesting antiques. Pro tip: Ask for a Kolsch ale from the von Trapp Brewery in Stowe, Vermont.

Beside The Point Any season of the year, one of the prime activities at The Point is simply curling up with a great book (it helps that there’s no WiFi or cell service), and you can pair this with a glass of wine or craft beer just by asking. There’s a sense of peacefulness that permeates the camp.

But, if you’d rather be more active, the summer temperatures allowed us to hike two trails: the “blue trail” outside the gate (just challenging

enough to get out of breath and break a sweat) and a trail we reached by boat, a 45-minute hike across to Waller Pond.

We also enjoyed taking one of The Point’s 20-horsepower outboard boats out on Saranac Lake. We explored and then settled on Windy Island where The Point staff set up a clothcovered table for the lunch they prepared and delivered to us. Fish and chips with craft beer on your own private island, anyone? #spoiledrotten The fleet also includes electric boats you can take out yourself; plus three boats that The Point will provide a captain for: a ski boat, a 33-foot mahogany hacker craft beauty and a replica of a 1920s Victorian fantail riverboat.

Occasionally, their nightly cocktail hour will be on this boat, weather permitting.

What’s The Point?

All-inclusive is The Point! All of your food and beverage is included for your entire stay. (Nightly rates for a couple are $1,800 for Algonquin and $2,300 for Mohawk.) Not only do you get to enjoy gourmet meals, but you have booze at your fingertips at all times, no extra charge. The breakfast menu stayed the same for our three-day visit, but we saw others ordering things not on the menu… just because! I loved the breakfast bowl full of quinoa, a sous vide egg, sautéed spinach, feta cheese, sliced avocado and sumac dukkah (like

Rustic luxury in upstate New York on Saranac Lake

Dinner is served at 8pm, following the cocktail hour, where you are encouraged to mix and mingle with other guests and enjoy communal dining in the Great Hall. But, as with any other meal, you’re free to dine alone at your preferred location. (Guests who have been coming to The Point for years chose to eat in the kitchen one night.) Dinner is a four-course gourmet dining experience with wine pairings along the journey. My favorite dinner included housemade ricotta gnocchi, diver scallops, lamb loin and lemon pudding cake.

As if that’s not enough sustenance, yummy snacks are left in your room throughout the day and the “night butler” encourages crazy culinary requests all hours of the night.

(How about some honey truffle fries at 2am?)

Apparently, he gets a kick out of catering to the most outlandish requests!

Getting to The Point From Texas, you might choose to fly into Boston’s Logan airport and take Cape Air to Saranac Lake. Cape Air, a small boutique carrier, flies to various locations within the Northeast, to the Caribbean and beyond.

Some things to know: »» You must check-in at the airport’s Cape Air desk a minimum of one hour before your flight. These planes are small so they need to weigh baggage (even your backpack) and they’ll ask for your weight, too!

Lunch is a set single offering, but guests are encouraged to ask for other choices if the feature doesn’t suit them. You can request your lunch be served anywhere on property.

Most eat on the terrace or inside the Great Hall, but you could choose the table in the pub, on your patio, at the actual point of the property, a picnic packed to take with you or any other location that you fancy.

There are many hikes of various levels within a decent driving distance. The Point will happily loan you a car for the day to go off-property.

»» Our plane held eight passengers and two pilots. Our backpacks went into a cargo space on the wing of the plane, but you can carry on reading material. »» Because these planes are petite, you might experience a little turbulence going over the mountains. They have to be uber-aware of the weather patterns. If storms are imminent, they might need to cancel a flight. Be flexible with your travel plans.

f you’ve only got 24 hours in Boston, you need a strategy. This New England charmer, the birthplace of our nation’s government, is full of history and culture.

There are also sports, a hip urban scene and a foodie’s paradise. Here’s one plan of action that will make you “wicked smaht.”

Taj Boston: Check in to check it all out Location, location, location. You can’t beat it.

The Taj Boston is on Arlington Street across from two beautiful outdoor areas, the Boston Public Garden and the Boston Common park. Not to mention, you’re within walking distance of just about anything you want to do in the city. (Including being just a few blocks from the famous “Cheers” bar.)

The Taj Boston was built decades ago (as a Ritz Carlton property) and has been renovated and updated, with a lobby that mixes posh culture with timeless beauty. Rooms are of ample size. (But, really, you’re only going to be there to sleep!) You will not find a more convenient and comfortable hotel.

Chowda & Chowdaheadz: Dinner & Fenway Uber over to Tapestry, a pub/grill that is blocks away from historic Fenway Park. Start with a regional craft beer like a Lamplighter Space Monster, an IPA from Cambridge, Mass.

Sonsie: Rise and shine About a mile down the road from Taj Boston is Sonsie, where you can get a great latte with their signature breakfast sandwich—a Cheddar jalapeno biscuit filled with sausage, egg, cheese, tomato and pickled onions. They call it “Boston’s best!”

Freedom Trail: A walk down history lane From Sonsie, head over to Commonwealth Avenue and walk the lovely urban park trail back to Boston Public Garden, then over to Boston Common, where you will pick up the Freedom Trail. Tip: Ask the concierge at Taj Boston for the Freedom Trail map and brochure. You can easily walk the trail and read all about the monuments, sites and parks.

From Boston Common, the first site you’ll see is the Massachusetts State House. Next up is Park Street Church, followed by the burial ground of many of our Revolutionary heroes, including Paul Revere, at Granary Burying Ground. There are a multitude of other sites on the way to Faneuil Hall, which has been a marketplace and a meeting hall since 1743. Now you’re about half way through the Freedom Trail. You can choose to walk the

other half or head towards Boston Harbor.

(Or, “hahba” as they say in these parts.)

Boston Harbor: food, fun and facts Have a tasty Italian lunch at Babbo Pizzeria.

Quench your thirst with a Mystic Voltage IPA from Chelsea, Mass., a pilsner from Maine or one of the array of other beers offered. Then brace yourself for one of the best caprese salads. (I fancy myself a caprese aficionado.)

Their secret weapon: burrata instead of mozzarella. Delicious! Share a pizza, maybe the Bagna Cauda—spicy sausage, escarole and mozzarella di bufala.

For some fun, pop into King’s Dining & Entertainment, which houses a pub, a bowling alley and an arcade. An array of pub grub like fried mozzarella or hummus will top you off after lunch.

A few blocks away, you’ll find the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum. Take the 75-minute tour, where you’ll listen to reenactments from colonial men, walk aboard a ship (and even toss tea jugs), listen to interactive canvas paintings, and watch a film explaining the conflicts Bostonians faced with the tea tax.

For a little inspiration, turn up Kenny Chesney’s “Boston” and plan your trip. If 24 hours isn’t enough, just go back! We’re planning to return in the fall to see the New England foliage.

Deer Lake Lodge A Detox Excursion for Body and Soul

This is not your typical travel story. This is a story about health, wellness and renewal.

In our busy lives, we hustle from day to day, not realizing how much wear and tear our environment, our food and the toxins in our homes (not to mention all of our technology) affect us.

Deer Lake Lodge, which opened in late 2012, is the only overnight detox spa in Texas and it’s tucked away in the woods near Montgomery, not far from Lake Conroe. The holistic health program focuses on your physical health (because, after all, we’ve only got one body in

this life and we need to take care of it), and also gently flows into mind and spirit.

Most guests check in for an average of 4 days/3 nights for their ultimate detox program, which is a combination of juicing, supplements, fasting and spa services. This unique health resort features a rustic chic style and caters to mostly women. At Deer Lake Lodge, they’ve unlocked a productive combination of detoxing, relaxing and inner reflection (with a dab of yoga thrown in for good measure).

Understandably, some might be intimidated

by a fasting regimen. Obviously, the longer you stay, the longer your detoxification, so beginners might dip their toe in the healthy waters with just a 2-night stay. Deer Lake has many guests that return annually or more than once per year. (Houston is nearby and a large feeder market for the spa.)

The drive to New Orleans from any one of the Lone Star State’s metropolitan cities is a picturesque trip full of Southern splendor, such as antebellum mansions (many complete with the history of plantation slavery), Civil War sites, drive-thru daiquiri joints, side road Cajun eateries, and oak trees where Spanish moss hangs effortlessly from the outstretched limbs.

If you’d rather stay away from the bustle of the French Quarter yet remain within a short distance, the Ace Hotel in the business district opened its doors to much fanfare after extensive renovations to the original art deco building. The lobby bar serves up splashy cocktails while the Josephine Estelle restaurant dishes an Italian menu with influences of the American South.

Other notables: Catahoula Hotel, a Caribbean vibe found in the business district, and the Henry Howard Hotel, a boutique hotel located in one of architect Henry Howard’s antebellum Greek revival homes nestled in the Lower Garden District.

With overnight accommodations a dime a dozen, the Hotel Monteleone stands out from the crowd. Begun in 1886 before being expanded several times throughout its life and taking on the Beaux-Arts façade seen today, it has been said that the French Quarter begins in this luxurious hotel lobby. Considered a literary playground of sorts, iconic American authors such as Tennessee Williams, Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner have found lodging and debauchery here. Located within the lobby is the world famous Carousel Bar, where you can sip on one of the finest Sazeracs in town while slowly rotating on an actual carousel.

Where to Eat: Although sometimes an afterthought to the booze-soaked nightlife found in the French Quarter, the New Orleans dining scene is consistently ranked among the best, if not the best, in America.

And rightfully so, thanks to the gastronomic explosion and cultural prevalence now found here.

With plenty of adventurous options scattered throughout the French Quarter, occasionally you desire a straightforward decent Cajun and Creole meal. The Original Pierre Maspero’s, directly across from Napoleon House (swing by for a Pimm’s Cup), exudes French Quarter warmth. With its history as the original slave exchange dating back to 1788, and the location for Andrew Jackson’s meeting with pirate Jean Lafitte to plan for the Battle of New Orleans, this restaurant is a must. Barbecue shrimp, fried green tomatoes, po’ boys, and blackened redfish round out the menu.

Where to Drink: Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop is considered by many to be the oldest continuously operating bar in America. Rumored to have been the swashbuckling pirate’s operational base, complete with tunnels leading to the Mississippi River, guests have guzzled many a purple drink while swaying to the tunes from the piano, lit only by candles. Beware, you may experience Lafitte’s ghost protecting the bar’s alleged hidden treasure.

Sylvain is slightly hidden along Chartres Street. Navigate down a narrow corridor before entering a courtyard and finding the door to the bar and restaurant with the help of the host. With a stellar playlist and early rustic American feel, it’s very easy to spend several hours perched at the bar.

Other notables: Step away from the French Quarter to the Marigny neighborhood where artists and musicians of New Orleans reside.

Here you’ll find The Spotted Cat Music Club and some of the greatest jazz and blues in town on their small stage. The Chart Room in the French Quarter is a cash-only dive bar with a great jukebox, eccentric characters, and Big Easy cocktails. And you really wouldn’t want it any other way.

While NOLA high-end names such as Brennan’s, Galatoire’s, and Commander’s Palace garner plenty of recognition, and rightfully so, a new breed of restaurants has been surfacing over the last decade. Housed within the walls of an 1883 Victorian mansion in the Garden District is Cavan, one of the newest eateries from the same team who operates other gems such as Sylvain, Meauxbar and the new Longway Tavern. Expect savory organic and classic cocktails, exceptional twists of New Orleans cuisine such as boudin tater tots, and hints of Asian flare with sweet curry shrimp and grits and General Lu’s crispy chicken. Reservations are recommended but walk-ins are also accommodated.
