Catalyst Summit in My Own Words

H

ow do you respond when you are asked to tell the story of seeing one of your most longawaited dreams come true? You say, "Heck Yes!"

The Dream (Briefly) It was roughly eight years ago when my friend and coworker, Lynne Christopher, and I dreamed of a day when all Texas water educators and communicators would gather in one place to share secrets, trade ideas and simply make new friends. After all, we mused, there must be other water educators out there feeling as lonely and disconnected as we were, right?

So imagine the excitement we had when our Rogue Water friends, Stephanie and Arianne, along with TAWWA and WEAT agreed to partner with us, San Antonio Water System, to host a mastermind summit called Catalyst right here in our home city. While it was pretty amazing to see this finally coming true, it was also a little scary. After all, would anyone really want to show up?

Wednesday, June 20th (2:30 pm) Welcome to San Antonio! You did show up. In fact, more than 60 of you, our fellow water educators and communicators representing every corner of the Lone Star state, have gathered to be stirred, recharged, energized and challenged by 12 outstanding thought leaders.

(5:30 pm) Self-professed "water nerds" began arriving at the El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel this afternoon to see what this Catalyst summit was all about. Dressed in our summer casual wear with locally inspired libations in hand, it was time to just hang out together: to renew

old friendships, create new work collaborations and even more important, just find a sense of belonging.

And this was just the pre-event gathering!

Thursday, June 21st (8:30 am) Ok, things really heated up this morning as I had the honor of speaking alongside water rock star and allaround good guy, George Hawkins, about the importance of "Why" and how that one question can propel both mission and strategy. Not a bad way to kick things off.

(10:45 am) In the spirit of innovation and creativity and because "place matters," we all walked up the San Antonio River Walk to the eclectic Paramour Rooftop Bar. With a shagcarpeted wall and hundreds of colorful bottles as our backdrop, Duke Greenhill of J.O. Design Duke Greenhill of J.O. Design and Arianne Shipley and the of Rogue Water lead a session at Catalyst 2018 in a Rogue creative space on the power of branding.

F

ake news and misinformation, common terms nowadays. I recently had two experiences that fall into this category.

The first one occurred as I was leaving a local Walmart store. There was a display for bottled water (see the photo below).

Based on my experience, the closest RON TAMADA the pipe in the 469-499-6152 picture gets to rontamada@gmail.com a water supply would be as a vent for an air release valve—in other words, this is NOT a water pipe. The second one was at the end of a routine plumbing service to install a new water faucet. When the plumber completed the installation, he told us that he was going to perform a water quality check using a swimming pool test kit. He then told us that our water supply was not safe to drink based on the results which showed a free chlorine residual of approximately 2.0-2.5 mg/L and a pH of around 7.5. When I informed him that the test kit results were right where they should be for a public water supply, he stated that this was swimming pool water. "Would you drink swimming pool water?" he asked. He made two mistakes: First, arguing with the customer and second, being totally uninformed regarding drinking water quality. The purpose of his diatribe was to scare the customer into having a (totally unnecessary) filtration system installed by his company.

The goal of the two incidents I have described is to create doubt, and even fear, in the mind of water customers regarding the safety of their water supply. This is a disservice to the clear majority of public water providers who work tirelessly each day to deliver a safe and plentiful CONTINUED PAGE 30 | letter from the texas section chair

Once More Unto the Breach, Dear Friends, Once More

M

ost of you who have known me for even a short time know that I am not one who quotes Shakespeare very often. My tendency is to quote contemporaries, such as lines from a good movie, or even a recent Broadway play. (Hamilton: "I wanna be in the room where it happens!")

But, the title of this column seems to be most appropriate.

It’s hard to imagine that it’s been almost a year since Hurricane Harvey struck the Coastal Bend, and then went on to dump more rain than anyone has ever recorded on Houston and the surrounding communities all over southeast Texas. Many of these communities are still recovering, rebuilding structures, infrastructure and most importantly, lives.

For those of us not directly impacted, it’s hard to imagine what those first few days were like, and what it truly means to rebuild everything. Spend just a few minutes talking to someone from the Coastal Bend or the Houston area, and after the surface conversation slowly goes deeper, you begin to hear and see the anguish in their remarks about the loss and starting over.

And once more and again dear friends, a year later we are in hurricane season. But, even though we have had two small threats this year, hurricane season is predicted to be less eventful than last year. That means we may not see three devastating storms hit the U.S., but it doesn’t mean we can sit back and read a book.

Instead, it means we can’t drop our guard, but maybe we can be just a little less nervous.

For utilities this is the time to be sure you are doing everything to build resilience and to review and improve your best practices. It’s also time to review emergency response plans and refresh everyone’s understanding of response protocols. One thing we

learned last year is that folks were a little "rusty" because it had been so long between storms.

So, here’s the pitch. We are presenting a 1.5 hour webcast on August 3 on hurricane preparedness.

We will host a panel of utility MIKE HOWE folks who were directly 512-238-9292 mikehowe@tawwa.org impacted by Hurricane Harvey to discuss what they have learned a year after the storm, how this information has changed their preparedness plans and how other utilities can learn from their experience.

We will also discuss All Hazards Consequence Management and the AWWA After Action Report on the 2017 Hurricane Season. Again, that will be August 3 online.

And, the next week, August 10, 8:30 am-12:30 pm, in Rosenberg, we will host one of our very informative Preparedness Workshops with folks from TCEQ and the Texas Department of Emergency Management. For those of you who were signed up for this workshop last year the same Friday that Harvey hit, we welcome you to join us this year. (Who knew?)

Both the webcast and the workshop are free, and both will have TCEQ Operator hours for attendees. You can register at www.txwarn.org. You must register in advance, and frankly, utility staff should register for both if they can.

Also, mark your calendars for April 2-5, 2019, to join us in Houston for Texas Water 2019TM. This will be the first time we have ever hosted the conference in downtown Houston. Submit an Abstract for Texas Water 2019TM!

Q

uick question: what’s your favorite part of the Texas Water Conference? I know, there are plenty of options to choose from. Maybe it’s the competitions, such as Pipe Tapping, Meter Madness, Hydrant Hysteria or the Top Ops quiz show.

Perhaps you’re partial to the trade show that gives you the chance to meet with vendors and discover the latest products and services from an exhibit hall that has grown to accommodate more than 500 booths.

Maybe you enjoy one or more of the ever-expanding list of conference activities, such as the Dodson’s Drive

Fun Run, the Curtis Smalley Environmental Event or the Gloyna Breakfast. If you’re a golf fanatic, this was probably a very easy question.

Free TXWARN Workshop: Disaster and Hurricane Preparedness

I

n the wake of Hurricane Harvey, TXWARN is hosting a free Disaster and Hurricane Preparedness workshop on Friday, August 10 in Rosenberg.

Last year, after nearly 10 years without a major hurricane in Texas, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in the Coastal Bend as a devastating Category-4 storm, damaging most structures in Port Aransas and causing significant damage to the water system. Harvey moved further on shore, causing power outages in the entire area and leveling entire blocks in Rockport and damaging their water and wastewater system.

Other communities in the impact zone also lost utility service because of power loss and hurricane wind damage, all while contending with nearly 20 inches of

flood-causing rainfall in Corpus Christi and the entire Coastal Bend area.

At the same time, Harvey was already dumping what became historic rainfall over all of Southeast Texas, flooding the Houston metropolitan area and surrounding communities. Water and wastewater systems were completely inundated, and after more than 60 inches of rain, many of these utility systems remained out of service for days. By the time Harvey had moved out of the state, it had become the wettest tropical cyclone on record for both Texas and the United States.

The strength of the technical sessions— the chance for water professionals to spread new information, techniques and strategies among their colleagues—is what makes Texas Water the can’t-miss event that it is.

But those sessions are only as strong as you, the water professional in the field, make them. Your willingness to share your knowledge and expertise with others is what drives the program forward. We’re asking you to step up, to share your work. It’s that time of the year to submit an abstract for presentation at Texas Water 2019TM. We want this year’s conference in Houston to raise the bar yet again for our Technical Program and we’re asking you to be a part of that effort. The rest of this article is going to briefly walk you through the process for submitting an abstract to our Texas Water Program Committee, which will allow us to consider you for inclusion in the Texas Water 2019TM Technical Program.

1. The first step in the process is to access the abstract submission form (this is assuming you’ve already formulated and refined your proposal).

The form can be found through a link on the Texas Water homepage (www.txwater.org) or by going to www.txwater.org/abstract_submission_2019. cfm. Make sure to read the brief instructions and introductory information, including the "Abstract Guidelines," before clicking the "Start" button.

2. The next step in the process is utilizing the "Search" function. This is designed to save you some time when filling out your contact information. Enter your first or last name, your company OR your email address. You should only fill out one of those fields or the search engine will not function properly.

After clicking "Search," you should be presented with some options. If the system has located you from a previous Texas Water database, you may select that entry and click "Start." If the system doesn’t find a match, that’s ok—simply click "New Registration" to begin your submission. NOTE: Your name may appear multiple times if you’re in the

database more than once. If this is the case, pick any one you’d like, but be sure to always choose that same option if you’re submitting multiple abstracts.

3. At this point you should be in the system. If you found yourself in the database, you should have some of your contact info filled in. Otherwise, fill out any required items (as noted in red.) Assuming you’re the Primary Contact (i.e. the first person filling out the form and not a "Co-Author"), the email address you input here will be the contact point for communication regarding your abstract. You’ll then need to provide a short bio and some information regarding your experience as a presenter. This information will be used in evaluating your abstract.

You’ll also need to tell us if you’ll be participating in the presentation, should the abstract be selected.

This helps us out around conference planning time.

4. Next is the task of submitting the actual abstract— the "meat" of your proposal. Most of it is self-explanatory. The Abstract Body needs to be pasted or entered in typed format (sorry, we can’t do graphs

or other images). You’ll have a chance to briefly summarize your abstract, so make sure to have your "elevator pitch" ready.

5. You will also be confronted with a question about how your presentation would assist water/wastewater operators in the performance of their duties.

This question helps when we’re applying to TCEQ to have the sessions accredited for operator continuing education hours. Some sessions/tracks aren’t necessarily geared toward operators training, and you should enter "N/A" if that’s the case for your abstract.

You will be asked whether you’re willing to prepare a poster presentation should your abstract not be chosen for a live session at the conference. While this information is not used in your abstract’s evaluation, it’s highly recommended that you click "yes." This is not a firm commitment on your part to prepare a poster (nor should it be interpreted as an offer to do so from the Program Committee), CONTINUED PAGE 22 | tw abstracts

The whole process is actually relatively simple and designed to be intuitive for the user. If your abstract is already fully written out, the whole submission process should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

The Program Committee will review your submission and begin informing accepted abstracts of their decision midDecember 2018. All submitted abstracts will be notified of their final status by mid-January 2019.

If you are accepted as a presenter, you will be required to register for the conference when registration opens in January 2019.

Did anyone else think Tom Ferguson’s British accent was pretty cool too?

Final Thoughts (11:00 pm) Ok, it’s probably just me, but I have a problem with patience. But if Catalyst is the reward of remaining patient all these years, to see a dream finally become realized, then sign me up for more. Because after 20 years of working in the water education/ communication world and having a difficult time feeling like I never "belonged" to a particular group, Catalyst allowed me to finally find my tribe—a collection of my "peeps" passionate about the same things and struggling with many of the same issues.

There were so many great questions asked during

our time together at Catalyst, but by far my favorite question went something like this: "When is Catalyst scheduled Greg Wukash, Stephanie Zavala and George for next year Hawkins at Catalyst 2018. and what is the plan for this water tribe moving forward?"

Oh my friends, just wait and see!

Additionally, we have learned better practices for utilities to prepare for events in the future, plus understand the local procedures for disaster preparation, response and recovery.

On Friday, August 10, TXWARN is presenting an updated workshop with subject matter experts from the TCEQ and the Texas Department of Emergency Management designed to help utilities to be better prepared for all types of events.

What is an effective and appropriate response to this type of misleading or just plain wrong information? I believe there is no better group of folks to spread the truth about drinking water than the members of TAWWA. Supporting educational efforts about drinking water for our members and the public is a primary function of the Section as set forth in our Mission Statement (https:// www.tawwa.org/general/custom.asp?page=About).

Our Section’s Education Division is led by Christianne Castleberry and her six co-chairs, Mark Southard, Gabe Trejo, Grace Sober, Karen Menard, Kira Iles and Greg Wukasch. This division is responsible for a significant part of TAWWA’s educational efforts to our membership, consumers, educators and students. The Division also promotes and supports competitions for water professionals and develops partnerships with other like-minded organizations to increase outreach

to the public. It also focuses our attention on specific water issues through the Value of Water series. Boy howdy, that’s a lot.

But our Section’s education activities don’t end there. Each of our Councils, Divisions and Committees work throughout the year to develop content for workshops, webinars, articles and on their program for the Texas Water Conference. Our 10 chapters cover timely topics, often geared to local concerns, at their regularly scheduled meetings and annual seminars.

Finally and most importantly, each of us interacts daily with people—family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, customers and passersby. If the opportunity presents itself, I encourage you to speak a good word about water. It can be as simple as a positive statement about the wholesomeness of tap water, or about your efforts to provide a safe and sufficient supply. "We work hard everyday to make you the best water possible!" No debates, no complicated technical explanations, just a simple positive word.
