Are You Making The Most Of Your Chances? Ray Pieniazek, East Central
Howdy and Happy New Year! I’m sure you are off to a busy new year. Isn’t it amazing how fast this school year has flown by? Some of you have already started a new semester, while some of us are just finishing up. Have you accomplished what you thought you would or are you wondering where the semester went to. Even in my 28th year of teaching I still wonder if I have covered the right amount of lessons this far to stay on track. For the new teachers, don’t worry if you didn’t get there, take some time and make a short list of what did and didn’t work and use it in planning for the coming years. Have you taken any chances lately in trying something new? If not, you have plenty more chances to do so this spring. This is the time of year that I look forward to the most; Career Development Events season. These contests have tremendous value to your students. They help them make rational decisions based upon standards, they build confidence in students, and they open student’s eyes to opportunities in the real world. Now is the time to get started and make the most of
the opportunities you have to give students; a chance to learn new and exciting things that our program has to offer. There are many Career Development Events to choose from. Try a new one and give your kids a chance to compete in something that can open the door to new opportunities for participation and growth. You never know when that event might lead to a student’s choice in a career. A few years ago we had a student teacher that wanted to coach a team that we had never trained before. One of the first students that worked on that team found out that’s where his interests was and now is in college majoring in the area career field. You never know when you will have the chance to open your student’s eyes to a new opportunity that might lead them down the path to his or her future. What contest will you take a chance on training? Do you think that you have some special lessons that other teachers can use? If so take a chance and present a workshop at our annual VATAT Teacher’s Conference this summer. We are always looking for teachers to step
up and share some lessons that can be used in the classroom. Teachers are always looking for innovative ideas to teach various topics. You can go on our website (www.vatat.org) and fill out the form to present and submit it to the office. As you begin traveling this spring, don’t forget to communicate with your administration about all the great things your students are accomplishing. Sometimes they just don’t know what we are doing. So share your student’s successes. Have a great spring and keep taking those chances.

What Does An Executive Director Do Barney McClure, VATAT Executive Director At times, I am asked what my job entails. It is a valid question, and since I am one of only two full-time State Executive Directors in the country, my duties may not be well known. According to the governing documents of our association, the current president is our Chief Executive Officer, and I am Chief Operating Officer. I answer to, and serve at the pleasure of our Board of Directors. As Chief Operating Officer, I am responsible for the day-to-day operations of our Association. These duties include managing the budget, as well as recommending to the board yearly adjustments to the budget. I supervise two full-time employees, one shared employee, and any part-time help we employee. We own a 6600 square foot office building four blocks from the State Capitol in Austin, which also serves as the home of the Texas FFA, the Texas FFA Foundation and the VATAT Credit Union. I serve on the Board for each of these organizations, acting as Treasurer. Managing our facility, while serving as landlord to the other groups, is a major responsibility. I am responsible for and sign contracts related to our association, which might include contracts concerning conference, facility repairs, business machines, maintenance contracts, internet, and phone services. Another major role is planning and conducting our summer Professional Development Conference. Of course, I don’t do this alone. Our staff, Board of Directors, and planning committee, play major roles.
I serve as the gatekeeper on our legal assistance program for teachers. A member with a potential problem must talk to me about it first to determine if it is something we can help with. We currently spend about 10% of our budget on this, and I am usually able to either put you in contact with our attorney, or direct you in another direction. I serve as the lobbyist for agricultural education at the Capitol and before the State Board of Education. Each year, I testify on issues that concern our program. The State Board meets several times per year, and I monitor issues as they arise. My official job description runs about ten pages, so this is not an all-inclusive list of my duties. The bottom line is that I work for our members, and everything I do is designed to support the efforts of our members in agricultural education. I enjoy my job and never take for granted the trust put in me by our members and Board. Anytime you have a question or concern, please call me at 512-472-3128 or email me at barney@vatat.org.

UPDATE Make it a “Brand” New Year Aaron Alejandro, Texas FFA Foundation Executive Director Did you know that 50% of the world’s population is under the age of 30? Young people born in 2007 represent the first generation that has been connected since birth via the introduction of the iPhone and wave of mobile communication. We no longer search for the news …. now the news finds us. We must utilize technology and social media to be a “great story teller.” We are starting a brand new year, let’s make our “brand” extraordinary. If you do not have a social media account, let me encourage you to do so – your very own brand could be at stake. How many other people have the exact same name on social media as you? Have you ever checked? What does their brand say about them? What does your brand say about you? Having a social media account(s) and internet presence allows you to communicate to the world … what is your brand … what do you stand for … what do you find amusing … what do you find important … who you are advocating for … you are communicating your brand. Why are people even on social media? Here are some of the top reasons people use social media: • To stay in touch with what friends are doing • To stay up-to-date with news and current events • To fill up spare time • To find funny or entertaining content • To share opinions • To share photos or videos with others • Because friends are already on them • General networking with other people • To meet new people • To share details of our everyday life
Freshen It Up
How often should I update my social media accounts? Here’s some tips on being effective and keeping a broader audience engaged. Research into the ideal frequency of posting to social media shows some good guidelines on volume. Much of the research refers to company brands, so it’ll be best to use these tips as starting points for finding your own best frequency. • Facebook – 2 times per day • Twitter – 5 times per day • LinkedIn – 1 time per day • Google+ – 2 times per day • Pinterest – 5 times per day • Instagram – 1.5 times per day
“Brand” New Year Let’s make 2016 the year for agriculture, agricultural education, leadership, advocacy and the Texas FFA. Engage your brand, engage your chapter’s brand, engage your company’s brand, engage your friends with information that makes you an expert. I challenge you to be an expert in three areas: Leadership, the Texas FFA and Agricultural Advocacy. Use your “brand” to help tell our incredible story.
Be an Expert Social media is an incredible tool in telling an incredible story, our story, our story, Texas agricultural education/FFA’s story. Examine your social media account; for example Facebook. If we looked at your Facebook account, what three areas would we determine you to be “an expert?” As people look at what you post, what you say, what you like and what you share, they are determining in what ways you are an expert. Be known as an expert in 3 areas. 7

UPDATE Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) Kelly White, Texas FFA Alumni President Each year, FFA members from all over the United States travel to Washington, D.C. to attend the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC). During the five-day event, attendees learn how to become effective leaders by teaching them to know their purpose, value people, take action and serve others. This is no ordinary leadership experience. You will spend a week putting these skills into practice as you make new friends from across the United States, tour our nation’s capitol and visit with members of Congress. This action-packed week will help you gain selfconfidence and leadership skills to take back to your FFA chapter and share with other members. They leave the Washington Leadership Conference with the knowledge and the confidence to act in ways that help their schools, community, and their country. The Texas FFA Alumni has traditionally granted four (4) $500.00 scholarships to deserving FFA members whose local affiliate are in good standing with the Texas FFA Alumni. Applications are online at www.texasffaalumni. ffanow.org under Applications. More info about the Washington Leadership Conference can be found at www.ffa.org. Don’t forget State and National FFA Alumni dues are due by February 15, 2016 to be considered for the Washington Leadership Conference scholarship.
Eligibility and Deadlines 2016 Scholarship: • Only one FFA member per chapter can submit an application for the Washington Leadership Conference scholarship. • Recipients must attend a Washington Leadership Conference workshop for the year the scholarship is awarded. • The Washington Leadership Conference scholarship will cover at least $500.00 of the registration fee for an FFA member to attend the WLC conference. Travel to and from the Washington Leadership Conference conference site and incidental expenses are the recipient’s responsibility.
8
• Applications are to be postmarked by February 15 of each year. The Washington Leadership Conference scholarship recipients will be announced by March 1st and winners notified by March 15th. • Each Washington Leadership Conference scholarship recipient is expected to attend the Texas FFA Alumni Association’s annual meeting in July. (The FFA Alumni Association Annual Meeting is held in conjunction with the State FFA Convention).

UPDATE Notes From the Executive Secretary Don Beene, Texas Young Farmers Executive Secretary It is hard to believe that we have begun a new year and it is now 2016. May this year bring good health and prosperity to each of you. Good luck during livestock show and CDE season. I know this time of year can by very busy. Just a reminder, scholarship applications are due April 1. We will be introducing a new application format this year. There will be no picture requirement, or SSAN. The application can be found on our website www.txyoungfarmers.org. I would hope that you would visit our website occasionally. The site is maintained by Debi Peyton of Chico and she does an amazing job. We are looking forward to the State Convention this month and hope you will join us in Bryan, Texas. The 2016 State Young Farmer Convention Planning Committee has been working diligently to finalize details for the convention agenda. Don’t forget to bring chapter baskets and other auction items for our Appreciation Lunch/ Scholarship Auction. I want to express our appreciation to our Young Farmer Program sponsors. Thank you for your support.
A Message From Your President
Kenneth Brown, Texas Young Farmers President The last few years have been a blast for me. Attending the Texas Young Farmer Convention in Bryan, National Young Farmers Convention in San Antonio, presenting scholarships and awards at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Texas FFA Convention and recruiting agriculture science teachers at the VATAT Conference in Waco have kept me busy. While I will appreciate the break, I’m going to miss it. I want to thank all of you for allowing me the privilege of representing you. The association has done so much for me. I have a deeper understanding of everything required to make a professional organization run efficiently. I’ve made many new friends and developed relationships because of Texas Young Farmers. I have matured to the level that I now feel comfortable being active in other civic groups. As I write this final article I pray that God watches over each of you and wish you all that life can offer.
Thank You For Your Support
