TEN YEARS OF COMPETING IN AUSTRALIA’S FEEDER CARCASE TRIAL HAS SEEN TEXAS CARCASE DATA SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE.
Reflecting back over the last 10 years of consecutively competing in Australia’s largest and most prestigious feeder carcase trials including the RAS Beef Challenge, RNA Paddock to Palate and ANZ Beef National Carcase Competitions, we could never dream of the success we have achieved to date. Our pursuit of breeding highly fertile, high-performance Angus with excellent carcase traits (which = REAL LIFE PROFITABILTY) continues. These industry relevant feeder carcase trials are the perfect avenue for us to benchmark our pure-bred Angus steers and heifers against not only Angus but all other breeds and crosses from across Australia.
Balance and profitability are the key drivers at Texas and we will continue to push the boundaries of efficiency whilst not sacrificing fertility and our proven excellence in eating quality. Entering crossbred Angus would be an easy solution but we will not comprise our purebreds and the DATA is what we are heavily chasing.
2023 RAS BEEF CHALLENGE
Once again with only heifers available to enter last year’s 11th Beef Challenge we certainly knew it would be a tough ask for them having to compete against crossbred steers but our heifers performed extremely well!
2023 RNA PADDOCK TO PALATEEKKA QLD
Now in its 26th year and only our 3rd year of competing, EKKA’s Paddock to Palate is Australia’s richest feeder carcase trial that dished out almost $55,000 in prize money. It’s also recognised as one of the world’s more commercially relevant competitions, with cutting edge data collection technology giving producers the opportunity to benchmark their purebred or crossbred cattle against 900 entries from some of the best seedstock and commercial cattle operators across Australia.
With only 3 years of experience competing in this prestigious RNA PADDOCK TO PALATE and allowing the world to see how our pure Angus genetics perform, we once again just missed taking the top honours in the 100 Day NON HGP Free Export Class 40, placing 2nd Overall. It was deja vu for us as we repeated the same result in 2021 and 4th in 2022.
We also placed 2nd for the carcase section and 4th and 5th in the weight gain in Class 40.
We have always focused on the 100 Day NON HGP Class at the Paddock to Palate Competition as we feel this represents where customer demand is and will definitely be in the future. We also had the second highest marbling pen in this class.
Two of our commercial clients Don and Kathy McCrae and Hamish and Mary McIntyre of McIntyre Ag both had a very successful night on the podium. The McCrae’s Angus won the Highest Individual MSA Index Score Class 37 & 40 plus the Eating Quality Award in class 40, while McIntyre Ag Angus scooped the pool with Highest Individual MSA Index score Class 38.

MACKA’S 2ND COMMERCIAL FEMALE SALE GOES OFF WITH A BANG!
Just under 700 Angus females went under the hammer and topping the sale were a pen of verified Angus heifers PTIC in calf to Texas ICEMAN selling for $4,300! 185 PTIC heifers in calf to ICEMAN and ICEMAN sons sold for a healthy average of $2,268 which was a terrific result considering the very soft market back in March.
TEXAS EARNAN L612 FEMALE TAKES SUPREME EXHIBIT AT 2024 SYDNEY ROYAL EASTER SHOW.
Congratulations to JSR & DSK Angus for winning the Urquhart Trophy & Hordern Trophy. We were pretty chuffed that Texas EARNAN L612 played a small part in this terrific success. This female was described as ”unbelievable” by Judge Scott Myers.

TEXAS BULLS STRONG COMMERCIAL INFLUENCE IN NORTHERN QLD & AUSTRALIA WIDE
“Clients are returning for Texas Bulls purely for survivability, fertility and profitability.”
Texas Angus was first established in Queensland in 1936 and has been selling bulls throughout the state and Australia wide for over 88 years. The influence of Texas Genetics has grown substantially over the last 10 years as we’ve increased our bull numbers to meet demand.
Clients are returning for Texas Bulls purely for survivability, fertility and profitability. Pastoralists are recording REAL performance with excellent weight gains, allowing QLD western pastoralists early turn offs. It’s great to hear from clients that their weight gains have significantly jumped, hitting market specs and their TEX bulls are surviving.
Our bulls are grown out on sub tropical pastured through the summer months and finished on oats and NOT thrown into a feedlot for a quick sale prep on a high grain ration. Our hot humid summers provides an ideal environment for out bulls to climatise for Northern environment. These photos are of Texas progeny around Cloncurry, Mt Isa & McKinlay.
Another great example of how well Texas bulls are surviving and thriving in Australia’s harsh conditions is at Tieyon Station, South of Alice Springs NT. Andrew Smith sent us this photo of Texas GPS M104 (K2 & M100’S full brother) who is still going strong at 8+ years old thriving in some of the driest climatic conditions in central Australia weighing a hefty 920kgs.
Other clients such as the Miles family who reside in the heart of Bos Indicus tick Country west of Rockhampton, are producing these magnificent Droughtmaster x Angus calves. Doug purchased his first Angus bulls from Texas at the 2021 Bull Sale and he couldn’t be happier with the Droughtmaster Angus cross calves he’s bred since then. Doug’s results have been phenomenal with 5-6 month old calves weighing in at 300kgs! (3 photos of his X bred calves)

HOW IMPORTANT IS DOCILITY IN YOUR HERD?
TEMPERAMENT would have to be our number one selection criteria at Texas! Not only are we super critical with all bulls we sell, the ones we keep, purchase and inseminate with, but every cow at Texas is analysed not only at weaning for docility but at calving as well.
For us it’s an OH& S importance, we tag and process all new borns and the mother is always recorded for protectiveness. If any aggressive behaviour is displayed these females are culled and we’ve found a strong correlation between the dam’s aggressive behaviour and how it influences her progeny’s behaviour.
No working dogs are allowed when weighing and tagging new born calves as our cows will become extremely protective of their calves which is an excellent protective instinct required for wild dogs or dingos.
As a result of stringent observations of the temperament of our herd, Ben and Hayden can comfortably tag and weigh every calf (900+) with their mother standing quietly beside them without any need to invest in a caged calf catcher.
Good temperaments will not only improve meat quality, but increase weight gains, quicker recovery from transportation and support general contentment in cattle.
