This 1,250kg 100% grassfed bull was pulled directly from a client’s paddock to be put on display for the world to see! They were captivated by his sheer capacity, length of body and his near perfect feet and structural correctness that left everyone in awe. Visitors were drawn to the commercial relevance of R448 being presented off grass, still fit, sound and ready for his 4th joining at rising 5. R448 has been joined to heifers and cows with absolutely no issues,his recent genomic test has blown his EBVs out but that is not stopping us from using a bull like this. Unfortunately the major data push in the industry has certainly stopped many seedstock breeders from using great structured, phenotype bulls like R448 and now as a result we are seeing many frail, fine boned, high tailed Angus cattle that are early maturing and that do not weigh! At WAF
Visiting the world’s largest registered Angus herd certainly lived up to expectations — with over 300,000 registered Angus females offering unmatched genetic diversity, it was an unforgettable experience.
We clocked over 7,500 km across 7 states - Montana, North & South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado - visiting 19 Angus studs and 6 AI centres in weeks.
So, what did we learn?
Low Rainfall, Big Resilience
Rainfall in many areas is a modest 12–16 inches annually (including snow!). That said, they’re currently enjoying above-average summer rain - with noticeably higher rainfall in the eastern states.
A Record Crop Year
This year’s crop is tipped to be their biggest ever - and they’ve never seen anything like it. Prices, howev- er, are very low, likely due to surplus supply, ongoing tarff issues with China, and high global stock levels. It’s certainly helping the feedlotters with low grain prices to help offset the high cattle prices. Hay bales are everywhere!
A Very Different System
Cattle production contrasts strongly with Australia:
Most bulls are sold as yearlings at winter sales, so winter calving is common, and cows have to calve in barns because of the freezing
conditions, they require bedding, feeding and round-the-clock observation. Sale barns require heating to accommodate the crowd. As a result of this intense workload many young producers are switching out of ranching to cropping. Older Bulls Slowly Making a comeback.
Due to the high fallout rate of yearlings (from intense feed regimes including being crep fed whilst on their mothers), there’s a renewed push for older bulls. Ranchers are reporting better longevity and more calves from older sires compared to yearlings - and are starting to switch their purchasing patterns and consequently we saw a number of breeders changing their calving seasons to meet these demands.
Cattle Prices at Record Highs
Following drought and a massive cow sell-off, cattle prices are soaring - and the US herd isn’t expected to rebound anytime soon. Labour pressures and the huge cattle prices is making it hard for anyone to get back into cattle and ranchers are cashing in on these prices rather than retaining their females. One com- mercial rancher in Valentine, Nebraska, told us he’s about to sell his 200 PTIC commercial Angus heifers for $7,000AUD that he would normally keep, but he’d never seen prices like these and wanted to reduce debit. Why would you not?
Due to the short US beef supply feeders are currently pushing their cattle out from 100 days to 120 to meet demand. So they are chasing
cattle with the increased length and frame to ensure the cattle hit markets weights and not go to fat early.
They are losing big money with early maturing cattle that are finishing way too early, having reduced yields and increased fat trimmings.
Interestingly ranchers are currently making more money grading Choice (which is a lower beef grade) with their animals that have higher yields compared to the cattle grading the premium grades of Prime or CAB....which leads us to the next big topic in the US
Focus on Red Meat Yield
A hot topic: Industry is pushing processors to move beyond just measuring ribeye/EMA size to predict red meat yields but to adopt whole carcase scanning (3D scanning) for a more accurate red meat yield analysis. They believe this could be introduced in the next 5 years. Let’s hope Australia follows with the latest technology.
