Texas cleans up the 2016 Sydney Royal Beef Challenge Our substantial investment in accelerating the genetic gain of our herd over the last 10 years is rewarding us in many ways more than one. Never in a million years would we have ever thought by entering our second steer and heifer feeder carcase trial would we have envisaged winning the prestigious Champion and Reserve Domestic Pen, Champion Export Individual and Reserve Champion Export Pen of the Sydney Royal Beef Challenge. We made a decision to benchmark our program not only against Angus and Angus cross cattle but against all other breeds and crosses from some very recognised elite herds of NSW and QLD. Many astute cattlemen have stated that Angus can not perform on weight against other high performance breeds and crosses (that have the added advantage of Hybrid vigour), but we proved purebred Angus (including heifers) can gain up to 0.5kg/day more than any other breed or cross. It’s no fluke as we’ve achieved this for two consecutive years, and what’s more is pleasing, our performance success hasn’t compromised our excellent carcase results. Not many studs have steers that score marble 7 on only 100 days feed!

contemporary group), plus Tour of Duty, Rampage, Element and Ranch House to compare with a large range of home bred and AI Sires we have used over the last 5 years.

for 2016 was even better

The steers entered were the bottom selection of 2015 Reserve their bull contemporary group and with the guided selection from Ben Hiscox, BJA, 2 pens of 100 day export steers and one pen of 70 Day domestic steers were entered. When the feedlot trial results were announced we were elated with winning the 100 Day Export Daily Weight Gain (DWG) and placing 2nd in the Domestic Daily Weight Gain against a cohort of 120 and 330 steers and heifers, respectively. We couldn't be happier to beat crossbreds for DWG that had the added advantage of hybrid vigour but when the carcase results were announced we were a little shell shocked at the success we achieved! Ben didn’t quiet absorb the achievement that night as he had driven all the way to Tamworth without the car keys. When he had arrived and turned the car off, it automatically shut down and couldn't be restarted! Made an interesting night on how he got home as he had to home early the next morning to start an ET program.

**Texas also scored the highest marbling score steer of 7 (2 scores above any other animal in the competition) only on 100

Woolbrook family’s heifers stole the title for champion pen of weaners at the 2017 Virbac Weaner Challenge and Feature Sale, beating one of the best line-ups ever seen at Tamworth Regional Livestock Exchange (TRLX) and surprising everyone in winning a title usually awarded to steers. It was a remarkable result for Woolbrook graziers,Tony and Tania Haling, “Hillside Park” who make it four years in a row for the prestigious title. In awarding the title, judge Jeremy Cummins, of Teys Australia, said that the Angus heifers were “a pen like no other, were exceptionally well bred and have a big future in the paddock”. The Angus heifers were by Texas Angus and Pine Creek Tony Haling, “Hillside Park”, wins the 2017 Virbac Weaner Challenge with his Angus sires out of big-framed Riverina bred cows. family’s heifers at Tamworth Regional Livestock Exchange. He’s pictured with agent Andrew Mulligan They were sold by the Haling’s long-time agent, Ian Photo courtesy Garth Gardner Morgan Livestock, for $1440, believed to be a record price for weaner heifers in Tamworth. They were bought by Sam Payne, Pitt Sons, Walcha on behalf of Joe and Sue Guerrini, Woolbrook which means they’ll be making their way back to the tablelands. Mr Haling was over the moon with prices at the blue ribbon sale. His steers topped $1100 last year, compared to $1300 this year, and his heifers topped about $900 last year, compared to $1440 this year. We congratulate The Haling’s for their dedicated breeding program and obviously it’s paying big dividends for winning the Virbac Weaners Challenge 4 years running especially when they are competing against over 4000 weaners! Tony and Tanya have been buying Texas bulls for the last 5 years.
