Client feedback - highlight the performance of Texas Angus Genetics Last year, Weewondilla Pastoral of Longreach QLD sold 12 decks of Brahman x Angus Steers to a northern NSW buyer who custom fed at Welcannah Feedlot at Moree NSW. These steers were fed for only 62 days and achieved an unbelievable feed conversion of 4:04 on a dry matter basis (which is 25% better than the feedlot average) with a 2.4kg daily weight gain to finish on a liveweight basis of 573kgs. They dressed out at 55.47% to 302kg HSCW and all graded MSA. This was an incredible result for the progeny of a line of trade Northern Brahman females that were crossed with Texas Angus bulls.

Weewondilla steers at Welcannah Feedlot Congratulations to the Haling Family of Woolbrook NSW who won the Vibrac Weaner Challenge at Tamworth Saleyards this year for a second year in a row. This weaner sale attracted well over 2800 weaners and once again the Haling family won the best pen of steers as well the new category to the competition a champion pen of heifers.

The Halings steers sold for $905 ahead and his Angus heifers making $800/head. These weaners were Texas genetics.

Knockdon Park of Tenterfield NSW has been exhibiting at the EKKA carcase competition for the last 2 years with excellent results. At the 2013 Brisbane Show, they won the Light Weight Meating Eating Award, placed 2nd in the 450kg carcase competition and placed 3rd on the hoof in the heaviest of the light weight range. Following up on their success last year, Knockdon Park exhibited again at the Brisbane Show last year and placed 1st on the hoof in the Medium Weight Class and took out the Medium and Heavy Weight Meat Eating Quality Awards. These steers were all by Texas bulls and its a credit to Knockdon Park’s breeding program.

Surplus Texas heifers were sold direct to Bindaree Abattoir this year under the MSA grid and the feedback was very pleasing.

These females were sold due to the season cutting out back in March and were 20 months of age straight off very dry grass paddocks. They marbled up to 5 with 15mm of rump fat and 86 EMA meat colour 2, AUSMB 780 and MSA index of 65.06.

The tops made $1175 which was prior to the EYCI price jumping. We were so happy with this result and will continue to evaluate our steer and heifer carcase results and take time to visit some of the bodies.

Maria River Cattle Company of Yarrawitch NSW has achieved yet another mile stone at the New England Weaner Sale at Walcha NSW taking out the higher priced pen of weaner steers of the day. Over the past 10 years, each year at the New England Weaner Sale Walcha, Maria River has either taken out the best pen of weaner steers or heifers, or achieved the highest price pen of the day. Congratulations to Maria River, it is a credit to their breeding program to achieve such consistently high results for so many years. They have been sourcing Texas genetics exclusively for over 12 years.

2015 Sale Bulls This year we have an exciting line up of commercially focused sound, problem free bulls that have undergone a rigorous selection process from birth to sale date. These include docility testing all weaners and their mothers at every calving, weighing, scanning and continuous evaluation. Over 100 of their brothers were castrated and sold to a QLD feedlot and as always we find their results invaluable information to analyse and incorporate into our breeding program.

We have a great selection of sons of Matuari Reality, Connealy Earnan, Te Mania 09 450 and GPS. Reality is a trait leader for calving ease, GPS is a Maxwell, New Zealand’s Matauri Angus inleader for growth, calving ease, fertility and Indexes. Connealy Earnan, a Colin spected the sale bulls with Ben in February this year. trait leader for growth, has sons that are real powerhouse bulls with amazing thickness and structure. We also have E10 sons who were the highest selling bulls last year and some great homebred sons. The “Carcase/Calving King”, GPS has stamped his breeding capabilities with evenness and his ultrasound results and carcase feedback have all been significantly higher than any other sire lines. We have some real standout GPS sons including K002, J603, J030 and J044. Please note J030 (Lot 26) is Australia’s highest indexing for Domestic and Heavy grass Indexes and second highest for Angus breeding Index!

Now is the time to take advantage of Australia’s record beef prices and upgrade your older bulls. Cast for age bulls have been making up to $2,500 and with 60% of our sale bulls making $3000 last year, a $500 change over for a higher performing, genetically improved sire is quite a bargain. The genetic advancements in the Texas herd are humbling.

70% of Texas Sale Bulls are in the top 10% for all growth traits (These bulls will produce heavier calves for 200, 400 and 600 days).

40% of Texas Sale Bulls are in the top 10% for EMA, RBY & Scrotal (These bulls will breed higher yielding progeny on the hook with higher fertility).

45% of Texas Sale Bulls in top 10% for Angus Breeding and Heavy Grain Indexes (this represents improving overall profitability for commercial grass and grain operations, particularly targeting highly marbled markets with premiums for superior marbling ie more $$$ for you).

Soils, Beef & Bull Day on 17th June

Run in conjunction with Northern Slopes Landcare Association and Texas Angus David Harwick of Soil Land Food (Agricultural Ecologist) will be discussing and showing at firsthand how to assess your soil and change its health. A soil pit will be accessed at Texas Angus. It is encouraged for you to bring your clod of soil!

Greg Krarup National Livestock buyer for Whyalla Feedlot will discuss preparing cattle for feedlot entry and international grainfed markets. He has been with Whyalla for 5 years and this feedlot currently feeds 70,000 head with 100,000 head on feed Australia wide. The company also backgrounds 18,000 cattle and runs a Wagyu breeder operation in NSW and an Angus herd with Wagyu Bulls on King Island in Tasmania.

Greg previously worked for Primo Meats in Scone having a similar role in the abattoir sector, with procurement of fat cattle with a focus on MSA graded cattle.
