Mt. Pleasant and Atlanta Smiles On Wheels First-ever, Back-to-Back Smiles on Wheels Successful!

Thank you to these dentists for participating in the Mount Pleasant Smiles on Wheels:

Volunteers and TDASF staff held the first-ever, backto-back Smiles on Wheels events in Titus County in Mount Pleasant and Cass County in Atlanta, April 3 and 4, respectively.

In Mount Pleasant and Atlanta combined, volunteer dentists treated 240 patients and provided more than $137,000 in charitable care.

2009 Healthy Smiles Golf Classic

One hundred four of Texas dentistry’s finest participated in the 2009 Healthy Smiles Golf Classic at the Pecan Valley Golf Club during the TEXAS Meeting in San Antonio earlier this month. A four-person team scramble began with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start and wrapped up at lunchtime with an entertaining awards banquet emceed by Dr. Percy Luecke of San Antonio.

Special thanks to the hosts, the Texas Association of Orthodontists, and the generous sponsors and players. A very special thanks to Nobel Biocare for serving as the tournament title sponsor and to Class One Orthodontics, Dental Health Management Solutions, and Delta Dental for serving as eagle sponsors of the event.

Donations to the TDA Smiles Foundation totaled $30,000, and the funds will support the foundation’s programs and missions.

More than 100 golfers participated at the TDA Smiles Foundation’s 2009 Healthy Smiles Golf Classic at the Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio.

Prizes for first and second place “Gross and Net Teams”, along with “Closest to the Pin” and “Longest Drive”, included trophies, golf clubs, and embroidered leather luggage.

Letter to the Editor

The TDA received an e-mail from Mr. Earl Stout expressing his gratitude to the service of member Dr. William Jay Fielder of Alpine.

If your organization has a way to honor or call to the attention of peers, I think Dr. Fielder should be recognized for his help to my wife on March 11, 2009. When in Lajitas, Texas, she fell and broke her upper front teeth and cut her lip quiet severely.

After telephoning Dr. Fielder, he waited with his staff beyond normal working hours until I could drive to his office in Alpine, Texas. He then provided the care needed to allow us to travel to our home and regular dentist to begin the several days required for the repair.

TDA Building Renovations The TDA Building Committee has been busy over the last few months! The committee received approval from the Board of Directors to freshen the exterior of both the TDA Building and the TDA Extension with new paint for exterior doors and trim, a covered walkway between both buildings, as well as new signage along the access road.

TDA 2014 Receives Approval

In The Loop Matthew B. Roberts, DDS, TDA President 2009-2010 As I write this first TDA Today president’s message, I reflect on my past 28 years of practicing dentistry. This is the time of year when new graduates anxiously await the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners’ exam and look forward to graduation ceremonies. It seems like only yesterday when I too was wrapping up my dental school education.

The economy in 1981 was in a period of extremely high interest rates. Uncertainty in the housing and job market sector had all of us cautious about our own futures. Yet, the naiveté of youth seemed to overshadow our fear of the unknown. We were ready to challenge the world. So, here we are, almost half way through 2009. The world economy is struggling, to say the least. Jobs are harder to come by, and uncertainty has again gripped our country. Still, I cannot help but believe the profession of dentistry is poised for continued success as we meet the needs of our patients. Challenges will always abound, from government regulation, insurance intrusion, and challenges by those who wish to diminish our ability to treat.

My goal over these next 12 months is to keep you informed of the pertinent issues affecting dentistry in Texas. As I visit the component societies and lead the Board in implementing TDA policy, this forum will allow me an opportunity to communicate the important ideas and happenings within the TDA. This will in effect keep each of you “in the loop” of what is important to all of us at the TDA. The staff, volunteer Board members, and I especially look forward to serving you, the members, of this great Association. Until next month — stay in the loop!

TDA Receives ADA Membership Awards

The Texas Dental Association won three awards in the membership category at the 2009 ADA Annual Recruitment and Retention Conference in April. The awards are Greatest Net Gain of New Dentists, Greatest Net Gain in Membership, and Greatest Percentage of Nonmembers to Membership.

Since 2007, TDA has received eleven awards from the ADA for recruitment and retention efforts.

Governor Perry Appoints Two TDA Members to TSBDE

Gov. Rick Perry appointed four new members of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE), two of whom are TDA members, for terms to expire in 2015.

Dr. William “Bill” R. Birdwell of Bryan is a member of the TDA, Brazos Valley District Dental Society, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and a fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists. He is also a past member of TDA’s Council on Legislative and Regulatory Affairs and the Financial Services Inc. Board.

Dr. Rodolfo “Rudy” G. Ramos Jr. of Houston is a member of the TDA, Academy of Dentistry International, Houston Dental Society, and U.S. Senate Conference Task Force on Hispanic Affairs.

He is also a board member of International Hands in Service, Spring Branch Independent School District Education Foundation and Memorial Spring Branch Rotary Club, and a member of the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church’s Guatemala Mission Dental Team.

The two other TSBDE appointees are Ms. Whitney Hyde of Midland, a court administrator in Midland County, and Ms. Mary L. Baty, RDH, a dental hygienist from Humble.

These appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.

The Governor’s office indicated that TSBDE presiding officer Dr. Gary McDonald of Kingwood, whose term expired on February 1, will continue to serve, at least until later this summer. State law authorizes the Governor to designate one of the five dentists on the Board to serve as its presiding officer.

TSBDE Rule Update This recurring section is designed to help TDA members keep up with important Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) rules, other regulations, and state law affecting their practices.

Question: My dental office was burglarized recently and the thieves stole two computers that contained patient records. Do I have an obligation to notify the affected patients or take other actions?

Answer: Yes. Both federal law, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and state law, the Texas Medical Privacy Act (Title 2, Subtitle I, Chapter 181, Health & Safety Code), require you to take certain steps to notify patients whose records were potentially compromised. You should contact an attorney who is familiar with the requirements of both laws and work with him or her to devise a plan of action.

In the News TDA Member Honored as One of Lubbock’s First Black Dentists

Texas Tech University honored 83-year-old Dr. Heenan Johnson II as one of Lubbock’s first black dentists. The event was hosted by the Texas Tech Black Faculty and Staff Association as part of Black History Month.

Dr. Johnson started his practice in Lubbock in 1959 and is retiring. His son, Dr. Heenan Johnson III, is a partner in the practice, Johnson and Johnson DDS. Dr. Johnson is a TDA life member and has served as a board member for the Boys and Girls Clubs for Blacks, Lubbock Power & Light, and the South Plains Food Bank.

TDA Council on Dental Economics (CODE) Visits the State Fluoride Director

The TDA Council on Dental Economics visited the Texas Department of State Health Services to meet with the state fluoride director Mr. Tom Napier. The council received a fluoride implementation demonstration and examined fluoride implementation hardware and materials.
