General dentist Dr. Grayson Sellers of Port Isabel is known for providing exceptional dental care to patients of all ages.

Now, he finds himself caring for a different kind of patient — one that doesn’t have a single tooth. Dr. Sellers is one of a group of dental and medical experts constructing silicone flippers for a green sea turtle named Allison.

Allison, a green sea turtle, lost three flippers in a shark attack.

Dr. Sellers has successful experience with dental implants, and the rescue group looked to him for advice. “I knew dental materials were definitely a possibility, so I contacted the University of Texas Dental Branch (UTDB),” he says. “I needed someone who would take me seriously since I was asking for help building a prosthetic flipper.”

He reached out to former TDA president Dr. Stephen Schwartz and UTDB dean Dr. Catherine Flaitz who requested help from assistant professor Dr. Sudarat Kiat-Amnuay. For almost 6 months, individuals from this team, along with veterinarians Drs. John Cozad and Thomas DeMaar and dental school hopeful Tim Hill, utilized maxillofacial prosthetic technology to create a silicone flipper using a mold from a frozen turtle flipper.

This procedure has been attempted on dolphins, but never turtles. The group tested three different types of silicone before choosing one with the closest properties of a real flipper. Last December, they placed the prosthetic on Allison’s right-rear amputated flipper, and she took right to it. “She took off,” says Dr. Sellers. “We wanted to place it in the back so she couldn’t interfere with it or try to bite it off.”

Next, Drs. Sellers and Cozad and Mr. Hill will implement several modifications expected to improve flipper function and overall retention.

Dr. Kiat-Amnuay will continue this project by taking data from this prototype to fabricate long-term, functional flippers for Allison.

For now, Allison is in her shallow pool at Sea Turtle, Inc. waiting for her finished flippers.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the green sea turtle is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The waters of the Texas coast provide an important habitat for green sea turtles, the largest hard-shelled sea turtle.

Capital Area Dental Society Hosts 10th Annual Foundation Gala

The Capital Area Dental Society and the Capital Area Dental Foundation presented the fundraiser, the Texas Safari, on Saturday, February 7, at the Texas Disposal Systems Exotic Game Ranch and Pavilion in Creedmoor. More attended the event that supported local dental charities.

Afternoon activities included bus tours and provided photo opportunities to see giraffes, rhinos, ostriches, gazelles, zebras, and dozens of other species of exotic animals.

Other afternoon activities included a golf challenge, washerpitching contest, and face painting.

The evening progressed with a barbeque dinner and silent and live auctions. The Lorrie Singer & Bradley Kopp All-Star Band provided first-class entertainment.

Second Smiles on Wheels Event Successful!

The TDA Smiles Foundation (TDASF) is proud to have completed its second successful Smiles on Wheels event on Friday, February 6, for the residents of Houston County in Crockett. Over the course of the single-day mission, volunteers served approximately 125 patients and provided more than $78,000 in charitable dental care. Our thanks to everyone who helped make it such a fruitful project.

Growing Good Dentists

Dentists, dental students, and dental auxiliaries attest that participation in Texas Missions of Mercy (TMOM) and other TDASF programs strengthen commitment to the profession ovide efficient settings tunities care for people in need.

Dr. Russell McFarlane, a general dentist in Austin, attended three TMOM events in the past 2 years, volunteering twice as a dental student and then as a dentist at the September 2008 Williamson County TMOM, Leander. “As a student, it was inspiring to see so many dentists donating their time and services,” says Dr. McFarlane. “It is always rewarding to work on patients who bless you and thank you profusely.”

Dr. Jennifer Molandes, a general dentist in Houston, says, “As a dental student, TMOM gave me an opportunity to see a lot of patients and helped me to feel very confident working in a fast-paced environment. Coming from an underserved area in East Texas, I think it’s important to never forget where you come from and keep giving back. I love going to TMOM and plan on attending for years to come. I think it is the essence of our career…caring for other people.”

Alice-Ann Thompson has attended five TMOM events over the past 5 years, in addition to serving as a TDASF intern in 2004.

She is currently a second-year dental student at Baylor College of Dentistry. “TMOM grabbed my heart, soul and mind like nothing else had ever done before! I saw first-hand what a positive impact a dentist could have on so many people, young and old alike … and as a result of all these experiences, I know I have chosen to pursue my dental career for all the right reasons!”

In addition to the TMOMs, the TDASF also supports education programs, such as annual dental student scholarships supplied by interest income from the Felix C. Crawford endowment and the Cavity Free Corral program to help educate children about the benefits of good oral hygiene on overall health and wellness.

In 2005 on South Padre Beach, a young girl found a stranded turtle that was missing three flippers, apparently the result of a shark attack that also left behind exposed bone and bite marks. She and her family took the turtle, named Allison after the girl who discovered her, to Sea Turtle Inc., a sea turtle rescue center on the island. Once there, Allison healed her wounds, but she was still without three flippers.

Question: How Do We Lead by Example?

Dentists lead by example by being the leader of the dental team and by advocating for their profession. Our most important responsibility is being the advocate for the patient, and, as leaders, to ensure that their dental home always serves them ethically.

One of the key aspects of advocating for the patient is to ensure access to proper dental care. With grant funding from the American Dental Association, the TDA commissioned an independent third-party report on the issue of access to oral health care in Texas, “Building Better Oral Health: A Dental Home for All Texans.” The TDA assembled a team of dentists to identify the state’s most pressing issues and specific and practical policy recommendations. The TDA views this report as the beginning to improving oral healthcare in Texas. It is our hope that the report will become the resource guide to oral healthcare in Texas.

We will also remain leaders for our patients who do not have a dental home by continuing to promote and serve our TDA Smiles Foundation through the Texas Missions of Mercy, Texas Donated Dental Services, and Smiles on Wheels programs that allow us to treat the underserved.

February 25 is TDA Legislative Day in Austin. All members are encouraged to attend this event as we have the opportunity to meet with our legislators to advocate issues related to our profession. On behalf of TDA, Senator Florence Shapiro (R-Plano) is filing a bill that would modestly expand duties for properly trained dental assistants.

Our role as the dentist is to not only be the leader of the dental team, but to advocate for the patient and the dental profession.

Greater Houston Dental Society Hosts Second Annual Dream Street

The Greater Houston Dental Society (GHDS) hosted its second annual Dream Street event at the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston (UTDB) last month. The event is part of the GHDS Professional Association Liaison (PAL) mentorship program, which member dentists mentors to dental students, residents, and new dentists.

GHDS members volunteered to exhibit a “mini table clinic” on an area of dentistry for the Dream Street attendees. The goal of the event is to portray life after dental school to the dental students and to illustrate the importance of organized dentistry.

Southwest Dental Conference in Dallas Sees Record Attendees

A record 10,872 people attended last month’s Southwest Dental Conference (SWDC) in Dallas. The event, sponsored by the Dallas County Dental Society (DCDS), was a huge success thanks to the DCDS Southwest Dental Conference Scientific Committee and chairperson Dr. Pamela Moore and hundreds of volunteers.

Attendees had access to the latest dental technology, products, and services and the opportunity to complete 24 hours of continuing education. The exhibit hall featured 375 booths.

Continuing education courses ranged from new expertise in practice management to anesthesia methods where participants received hands-on experience. At the conference’s “Center for Knowledge” exhibit, live patient demonstrations were given to packed audiences of dental professionals.

TSBDE Renewal Cards Update

IMPORTANT TSBDE NOTICE: Reminder Postcards Have Replaced Renewal Forms

Applies to all dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental laboratories licensed and registered in Texas. As of January 1, 2009, the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) stopped mailing renewal forms. Instead, the TSBDE will mail a reminder postcard approximately 60 days before the license or registration expiration date.

What Do You Do When You Receive Your Postcard Reminder?

Unlike the renewal form, which was mailed back to the TSBDE with a check or money order, the new postcard should not be sent back to the TSBDE to renew a license or registration. Instead, you will be encouraged to renew online by visiting tsbde.state.tx.us.

When Can You Renew Online?

A license or registration can only be renewed online up to 45 days prior to the expiration date and any time after the expiration date. A cancelled license or registration is non-renewable. Your payment online can be made by credit card, debit card or electronic check.

Licensees Under Continuing Education Audit

A license under Continuing Education Audit cannot be renewed online and must be renewed by mail.

In the News TDA Members Named 2009 International College of Dentists – USA Section Officers

The International College of Dentists – USA Section named Dr. Leighton A. Wier of San Antonio as its 2008-09 president. Dr. Richard M. Smith of Amarillo was named the treasurer.

The International College of Dentists is a not-for-profit organization which awards fellowships to dental professionals for conspicuous and meritorious service to the profession of dentistry.

American Dental Assistants Association Names Texans as Officers

The American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA) named San Antonio resident Stephen E. Spadaro (Ret., U.S. Army) as the 2009 president and Irving resident Ms. Ronda V. Lane the ninth district trustee.

The 2009 ADAA officers will work toward the adoption of legislation mandating credentialing for clinical dental assistants and greater recognition of the assistant’s role in the professional dental team.

The ADAA is America’s oldest, largest professional association serving dental assistants.

Academy of Dentistry International Inducts 2008 Fellows

The Academy of Dentistry International (ADI) inducted its new 2008 fellows.

Dr. T. Bob Davis of Dallas was named the regent for the ADI South Central USA Section and 16 TDA members were named fellows.

ADI is dedicated to sharing knowledge in order to serve dental health needs and to improve the quality of life through the world.
