GIVE IT A GO IN TEWKESBURY If you fancy trying out a new sport or taking up a new hobby this Summer, then now is the time to find out what Tewkesbury has to offer. To showcase what’s going on in the busy town, a special ‘Our Tewkesbury’ event will be held on Saturday 30th July. It will be a great opportunity to explore what’s happening in the town. The event will be hosted by Tewkesbury Rugby Club, and supported by Barnwood Trust, who will be there with Tewkesbury Community Builder Jane Griffiths. “We’ll be there to offer support for budding interest groups, connecting people around their passions, and looking at ways to get groups up and running, said Jane. “Whether it is Underwater Hockey or Walking Football, Museum Projects or Photography, Art or Gardening, Crafts or Music – there is a club or group of people who get together and do it. “If you’ve wanted to join in with something but don't know who, where or when, this is

The event was organised in partnership with Jackie Dean of Flowers of Fun. As part of the town's entry in to the Britain in Bloom competition, an educational programme has to be provided for children and around twenty five children aged 5 upwards visited the Town Hall to enjoy a morning of creative fun and learning. Participants were able to pick up the basic skills of floristry and take home a cone full of flowers. Organiser Jackie Dean commented “The idea of the workshop is to reintroduce flowers to children, encouraging them

to develop an enjoyment of flowers through getting creative. The history of the flower cone is an age old tradition when youngsters would leave small bunches of fresh flowers on May day in the door ways of friends and neighbours.” Two Britain in Bloom judges from the Royal Horticultural Society will be visiting the town on Wednesday 6th July to assess the town's horticultural efforts. In 2015 the town was awarded a gold award and best in category in the Heart of England regional competition and a silver gilt in the national competition.

BLOOMING MARKET PLACE Every Friday morning from 9 am you'll find the Country Market team setting up at Tewkesbury Town Hall. If you've not visited this weekly market before, its a real gem with stalls laden with delicious homemade cakes and preserves, home grown and carefully tendered bedding plants. You'll also find a great selection of crafts and goodies including hand knitted baby's clothing, handmade cards and fabric bags. The busy team (pictured above) are backing Tewkesbury in Bloom this year and have sponsored the a new rose bed at the 1471 garden on the corner of Lower Lode Lane as well as a town centre barrel to bring cheer to the High Street.

NEW FERRY TIMETABLE Town Mayor Karen Brennan (left) helped to launch the revised Tewkesbury to Twyning ferry service over the Bank Holiday Weekend. The service, run by Severn Leisure, operates between Back of Avon and the Fleet Inn. It will also be stopping off at Croft Farm Waterpark, which offers camping and water sports activities. New earlier trips will run on Wednesdays and Saturdays to cover market days. They leave Tewkesbury at 9.30am and Twyning at 10.15am.

BREDON GET A CLEAR WAY TO MIDLAND VASE SUCCESS Staff and directors of Cheltenham-based Clearway Doors & Windows are celebrating after two Rugby teams sponsored by the company notched up memorable victories. Bredon Star RFC defeated Redditch 32-7 in May to retain the North Midlands Vase for another season. Bredon Star travelled to the final for the second time in three seasons, full of hope of victory to finish off an upand-down season. A coach full of players and supporters made the trip in beautiful sunshine, and they were not to be disappointed. The match started with Bredon playing with a slight wind behind and it wasn't to prove as easy as expected in the early exchanges, with Redditch putting up a strong fight up front. However the heat of the day was to take its toll on the large Redditch pack, and the ball handling of the Bredon forwards in the close exchanges proved too hot to handle. Clearway’s Managing Director Jeremy Phillips, who lives in Bredon, commented: “I am delighted that the sup-

䡵 Victorious Bredon Star RFC port we have given to the club has helped them to achieve sporting success. Well done to all the players, coaches and supporters of Bredon Star for showing such fantastic team spirit.” Last season Clearway provided a set of fleece tops for Bredon Star’s first XV (who play in Gloucestershire League One) as well as shirt sponsorship. The company also helped with the refurbishment of the team’s clubhouse, supplying and fitting doors and windows to the premises. The second team sponsored by Clearway, Newent, beat local rivals Cinderford United to win

the Forest of Dean Cup for the first time in their history. Clearway Doors & Windows was established in 1983 and remains locally owned and managed today. They specialise in aluminium and PVCu products for a wide range of domestic and commercial applications. Clearway has undertaken a variety of projects over the years; schools, hospitals, factories and sports clubs - as well as individual clients whose needs vary from a single item or refurbishment right up to a complete new build. Lost babies to be remembered at ‘saying goodbye’ service in Tewkesbury Abbey Families from Tewkesbury and beyond who have suffered the pain of baby loss at any stage of pregnancy, birth or in infancy are invited to join a special service in Tewkesbury Abbey this month. The service, at 5.00pm on Saturday 16th July, is one of the first of a set of national commemorative services to take place in cathedrals and minsters across the UK. Part of the international ‘Saying Goodbye’ series, it is the first time the service has come to Tewkesbury. The services were established by Staffordshire couple Zoe and Andy Clark-Coates, who have lost five children through miscarriage. ‘Saying Goodbye’ is part of the Mariposa Trust, a charity and company limited by guarantee, which works with other organisations and charities to provide counselling, information and support. The service will feature contemporary music as well as poetry and readings, mixed with acts of remembrance and time for reflection. The organisers hope

that people from all over the county and beyond will come to what is always a beautiful and deeply moving service. The service is free to attend and open to any-

one of any or no faith. Seats for the service are available on a first come, first seated basis. For more information please visit the website www.sayinggoodbye.org

A new social book club has been set up by Tewkesbury resident, Jackie Day. Meetings are held every first Wednesday of the month at Bookworm Book shop in the high street starting at 7pm.

The cost is £3 which includes light refreshments (glass of wine or cup of tea) and a choice of book to take away on loan. “This is an informal book club, and instead of members all reading the same book, we are encouraging people to discover new authors and genres. Everyone gets the opportunity to share their feedback on the book they have read,” said Jackie. There is also the bonus of book recycling too since members are encouraged to return the book to the shop, which is put back on the shelf. Profits from the monthly event are donated to Bookworm’s charitable causes which include donations to

Cancer Research and local community good causes.

I am delighted to report that the NHS is now getting more joined up, writes Peter Badham. Pharmacists will have access to a summary of patients records held in the GP surgery. This access will only be available after permission has been granted by the patient, or in an emergency or accident in the best interest of the patient. Access at the moment will be read only , but in time , pharmacies may be able to feed information back to the GP via write option. This new service will improve patient safety and improve efficiency. We will have to contact the GP less often for example on queries relating to medication and allergies. Patients can be assured that the system will be carefully monitored by trained Privacy officers at each pharmacy who will audit and report every time the system is activated. I think this will be massive bonus to patient care, pharmacists will have more information about the patients medication and allergies. Please call into and speak to one of our team, if you want any more information on SCR.

TEAMWORK We recently received a call from the South Worcestershire Lifeguard Club who had been testing out their boat on the River Avon, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. They were making sure the boat would be ready in the event of an emergency, when they came across a swan in distress on the water. They spotted something hanging from his beak which looked like some sort of fishing float. They had tried in vain to catch the swan but unfortunately they could not get close enough to reach him and so they called us for help. As with the majority of swan rescues, we needed a boat to reach the casualty and the Lifeguard Club crew were very willing to help us with the rescue using their boat. So Martin and Ann headed off from the hospital, armed with a swan hook to the point on the river where the lifeguards were waiting. After a short boat trip upstream, the swan and his mate were located next to where a brook joined the main river. What they didn’t want was for the pair of swans to head off the river onto this brook and unfortunately that is exactly what the female of the pair did. Luckily, the male remained on the river and with a bit of clever piloting, the boat was positioned between the swan and the river bank. With a bit of food to encourage him to come

nearer to the boat, he was eventually close enough to use the swan hook to catch him and get him off the water and into the boat. Once back at the hospital, the swan was anaesthetised and xrayed, which revealed that he had a hook embedded inside his throat, with the line and float hanging from his beak.

Food had also started to build up where the hook was stuck. If he hadn’t been spotted and rescued, the swan would almost certainly have died as he wouldn’t have been able to ingest any food at all. It took us quite a while to dislodge the hook, but we finally managed to get it out and the swan was given a long-acting antibiotic injection to help prevent any infection and was then given a bed for the night at Vale. The next day he seemed fine and was eating and drinking well so it was decided that he should be released back as soon as possible to hopefully rejoin his partner.

by John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society In June 2016 we are celebrating the opening of the ‘Missing Link’ in the Riverside Walk which was designed to allow us to walk upon the banks of the Mill Avon from King John’s Bridge to the Gloucester Road coach park. The headlines, of course, have focused upon the almost 70 years which the project has taken! Credit has also been attributed to the generosity of GIs, once stationed in the Town, who left a “pot of gold” for

the project. That however, is likely to be a ‘Tewkesbury Myth’. The project was conceived by Cllr. J.O. Martin in 1947 with the aim of ridding the town of the redundant industrial buildings which cluttered the river bank. The two photographs contrast the area in 1949 with today. Initially it was naively hoped to raise £10,000 with a publicity campaign in the USA. However, when the first appeal was wound up in 1951, only £455 was raised - and a £100 of

that was donated by Cllr. Martin. Very little came from the US. Much was still achieved but by voluntary labour and donations of land and money. By 1955 the council had to take over the project and thus the

amenity of the Riverside Walk as we enjoy it today gradually took shape. If anyone knows the location of that pot of gold – please let us know! John Dixon

I had discarded the other eggs and left them in a pile of grass cuttings by my shed until I could bury them. When I got back from work my Dog had taken one and dropped it in the grass as I picked it up there was a small hole in the egg and a live Chick in it! This was popped into the incubator and eventually it too hatched. Three full days after the others and having spent at least 36

Eggs were then removed from my bra again warm and put to hatch in the incubator. They hatched the next day and were reunited successfully with Mother Hen whilst she wasn’t looking. Tewkesbury Hand Car Wash is the only car wash in the local area to create a comfortable waiting room that caters for all. There are coffee and magazines to relax with, and an area with children’s activities to keep the little ones entertained in a safe environment. This year, Nick Bailey of STC Motors, has filled the forecourt with a selection of quality used cars that are prepared locally to a high standard and supplied with a

3–12 month warranty. Nick has over 25 years experience in the motor trade and said “I’m really pleased to be working with Albert and I am enjoying helping our local community.” Last year, Albert teamed up with Brian Williams, from ‘Cornerways Nursery’, and became the only local stockists of his award winning flowers. Together, they stock competitively priced plants and hanging baskets throughout the sea-

sons, and sell quality Christmas trees. Tewkesbury Hand Car Wash are proud to support many local charities and you may have seen the wonderful ‘Poppy Pedal Mural’; a work in progress by Sam Morris ‘the famous cow artist’, to support Mo Morris’s cycle ride to Paris in aid of The Royal British Legion in Tewkesbury. Albert Dosku said “We like to be able to give back to our community as we wouldn’t be here without their support.”

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

THE AVON’S TWIN MILLS At this time of year, when the river meadows are dry and filled with wild flowers, there is no more pleasant place to be than by the banks of the River Avon, writes Jack B. Walker. This easy flat stroll offers takes us to both banks of Shakespeare’s beloved river, and adds a little local history about the mills at Fladbury and Cropthorne.

䡵 Moorings at Fladbury

Use the public car park at Jubilee Bridge. The bridge spans the Avon to link the neighbouring villages of Cropthorne and Fladbury. The original bridge was built in 1887 to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. Before that time the only way to cross the Avon was by means of a water gate near Cropthorne. This was a series of gates and sluices on top of a weir, which could be closed when water was low, and enable the river to be forded. The 1887 bridge was replaced by the present iron arch structure in 1933.

Leave the car park and cross the bridge, (1) and look out for a kissing gate on the right (2). Go through into the meadow, and walk along its edge with the road and a wire fence to your left. At the end of the meadow, bear right and then go over a footbridge on to a small island (3). Ahead of you is a bench where you may admire this lovely setting, and read the information boards which trace the history of the two mills here. Fladbury’s Mill is to the left: in front of you between the weir and the lock is the impressive red brick Cropthorne Mill. Go back over the footbridge, but this time go along the river bank (with the Avon to your left) and follow the path back to the bridge. Here is another information board, beneath which are a few fragments of metal which are all that’s left of one of the original cast iron bridge’s supports. Go through the gate (2), and back over the bridge. Turn left up the lane which runs between car park and the Avon. Look for the yellow way-marker arrow on the left (4). Follow the direction through the gate and down to the river. Bear right and follow the river bank until you reach the end of the meadow. Cross a footbridge (5) and bear left over a stile to reach the lock behind Cropthorne Mill. Keep the lock to your left, then cross another stile to return to the river bank. Opposite you now are the moorings of some Fladbury homes whose well manicured lawns sweep down to the Avon. Carry on along the path until you reach the railway bridge, where the path peters out (6). Retrace your steps back to the car park.

䡵 Distance: approx. 2.5 miles, flat, riverside walk (NB: the meadows flood at certain times of year) 䡵 Car Parking: free car park at Jubilee Bridge. 䡵 Refreshments: The Anchor or Chequers Inn at Fladbury; the re-opened Gardeners Arms, Charlton; The Bell Inn or The New Inn at Cropthorne (on the B4084). Picnic area at Jubilee Bridge Car Park. 䡵 Not to scale: OS Sheets 190/205 recommended.

The Illuminations by Andrew O'Hagan PB £8.99 I finished reading this very good novel wishing I read it last year when it first came out and long before it was awarded a nomination on the Man-Booker Longlist. The reason I did not was I did not want to read another story about the conflict in Afghanistan. My loss, one I am pleased to have corrected. The parts of this novel covering the British Army at war are well told. The army language seems to me very authentic. The action and experiences of soldier /grandson, Luke, a Captain, and his platoon realistic and are no doubt a reflection of the life our troops experienced in that campaign. The main story covers Luke's grandmother, Anne Quirk, who is living in sheltered housing in Scotland but as her memory fades needs to be moved into more secure accommodation by her daughter, Alice, Luke and good neighbour, Maureen. We learn a bit about Maureen and her family, about Alice's life and what made Luke choose a career in the army, but it is Anne's story and her involvement with Harry Blake that bring this novel alive. Anne's past is a bit of a mystery, but she spent time in Blackpool, returning for regular visits from

her Scottish home where she was caring for ageing aunts. In Canada Anne developed a burgeoning reputation as a photographer, which she has to sideline to move to Scotland. Then while visiting Blackpool she meets Harry. Luke takes Anne back to the resort for a final visit, during which memories are unlocked, and revealed. The close relationship between grandson and grandmother is finally described, as neither share a closeness with Alice. The back story in Scotland unfolds against Luke's experiences as an officer in Afghanistan and how those actions affect his superior, Major Scullion. Life in coastal Scotland compares with the rough and tumble of Glasgow before the final events are illuminated to us, the reader, against the background of Blackpool, its pier and its famous lights. delighted when they received the results this week: 19 Distinctions and 2 Merits. One parent described the results as “Phenomenal!”. Amy said “We are very very happy teachers. Well done to all of the students and fellow teaching staff for their hard work. It is a fantastic feeling”. The fantastic results are testament to the dedication of teachers Amy Bastin and Jane Kennedy, the commitment shown by the stu-

dents to dance to the highest standards and

TEWKESBURY COLTS HOST ANNUAL TOURNAMENT Saturday the 11th June saw the Tewkesbury Town Colts hosting their biggest and best annual football tournament so far, with nearly 90 teams competing in age groups ranging from under 7’s to under 12’s. Local clubs from Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester mixed with teams from further afield, including Hereford and Droitwich, to create one of the biggest tournaments in the County. Girls’ teams were well represented with separate competitions for under 10’s and under 12’s reflecting the continued growth of this area of the sport. A contingent of children from Alderman Knight Special School were also accommodated by the Colts as part of their philosophy of football for all. A few spells of rain on an otherwise warm day

did little to dampen the spirits of the children who enjoyed emulating their heroes currently playing the Euro 2016 Championship. All teams played a series of group games before the top placed teams moved on to knockout stages leading to finals, in some cases games were even being decided by sudden death penalty shoot outs. A great day out was had by all, especially the under 7's who were the loudest by far when it came to receiving their medals! The Tewkesbury Town Colts were formed in 1975 and are recog-

nised by the FA as a Charter Standard Development Club, currently over 300 boys and girls enjoy training and playing football matches in local leagues. Although the current season is now closing the Colts are already looking to sign new players on for next season – all children from ages 5 to 18 are welcome regardless of ability. If you are interested in playing football in a safe and supportive environment please get in touch via the club web site at www.tewkesburytowncolts.co.uk.

SHOPPING IN OLD TEWKESBURY

This month we take another look at two more businesses that were trading in 1912 when they were featured in the town guide of the time. Kindly, Historian Derek Round provided the guide, which has allowed us to run some then and now comparisons. The first property belongs to William Bloxham in Church Street, seen here with sides of lamb, beef and pork hanging outside

the shop. Today the shop is a private residence, recognisable by the splendid cast iron work above the window, this lovely dec-

oration is still in place today. There is another doorway into the shop which leads to speculation that it may have been a lock

up and the other doorway gave access to the residence above. Note the cellar grille is still there today.

The second photo is again a butchers and it too today is a private residence.

C.Matthews butcher traded from 78 Barton Street and is next to the current day Coversure

insurance brokers. The name of E Harper may be an addition by new owners as the ad

clearly refers to the Late C.Matthews.

TEWKESBURY SOLDIERS AND THEIR SACRIFICE AT THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME Local Historian has traced local soldiers and their part in the awful First World War Battle of the Somme. Today the Battlefields in Northern France and Belgium still serve as a reminder of the past and make interesting destinations to visit. The area is now back to the rural farmland and the small towns, just as it was 100 years ago, it is easy to trace the conflagrations of the past and there is much to see and think about. The Battles of the Somme, July 1916 conjures up images of the 1 July - the “most disastrous day in the History of the British Army” with 57,470 casualties of which 19,240 were killed. The infamy lies in the fact that many of them were volunteers [V] in “Pals Battalions”,

when friends joined up together - and then died together. However, this was only the first of 141 days when a series of battles were fought uphill with the German defences dug into indestructible concrete defences at the top of the ridges. In July the ‘Tommies’ struggled from Albert to High Wood in five official battles, suffering 196,081 casualties including 12 Tewkesburians. No county battalions were involved in that first day but some local men were killed fighting for other battalions: Rifleman John Walker [TA], a 41 year old with the London Regiment and L/Cpl. G. M. Topham [V] a former Grammar

School boy serving with the 12th (Sheffield City) Battalion. Like many he survived the first day but died later of wounds. It was 3 July before the 8th Gloucesters [V] reinforced a stalled attack, costing the lives of two of the first volunteers from the Watson Hall: friends Ptes. L. Rossell and H.E. Rowley [V]. Victory adjacent to the high village Contalmaison took 12 gruelling days. Land was gradually captured but losses occurred defending these successes: Gunner W.A. Day [V] was “blown up among the horses”. It was 19-20 July when the first local Territorial Battalion, 1st/5th Glosters moved into the

attack but only at La Boiselle, which it failed to capture and “lost heavily” including Sgt. Henry Cook [TA]. 23 July 1916 was, however, the blackest day for Tewkesburians with 5 killed attacking well-defended high points. The 8th Glosters had reached High Wood but lost the son of the Grammar School headmaster, Lt. S. N. Priestley

[TF]. Pte. P. C. Hawker [TF] succumbed at Delville Wood while Cpl. Austin C. Papps [TF] (son of a leading shop owner) and Pte. T. Parrott [TF] were killed fighting for Pozières Ridge. There was nearby a concrete stronghold attacked by the 10th Gloucesters, volunteers who had survived Loos in 1915; they lost L/Cpl. A. E. Wilkes [V] .

The end of the month saw the 8th Gloucesters still in the thick of it, losing the grandfather-inlaw of Cliff Burd, Cpl. Joseph Walker [V], a week later on 30 July 1916. There were still 110 days to fight in the Battles of the Somme with our town losing 16 more of our Noble Band of Heroes.

ALISON’S POP UP CHARITY STALL On Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June 2016, Allison Findlay (of Newtown, Tewkesbury) and Nicola Docherty (of Ingleby Barwick, Stockton on Tees) held a Table Top Sale in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK, on Ashchurch Road, Tewkesbury. We were raising much needed awareness and funds for this little known disease/charity. As a family we were personally affected by Pancreatic Cancer when our father, Howard Gibson (of Newtown, Tewkesbury), was diagnosed in October 2014. Sadly he passed away in October 2015, and we wanted to honour his memory by supporting a charity that would benefit others similarly affected. Every hour, someone in the UK is diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and survival rates have barely changed in 40

years, currently they are at about 4-5%. Our Table Top Sale raised £ 181, and we would like to thank all the people who stopped to generously support us, particularly Allison’s friends and neighbours in the Newtown area. We have also raised

an additional £320 which will also be sent to Pancreatic Cancer UK. The total will also be “gift-aided” so the total should be something in the region of £600£625. Many thanks once again to everyone who gave their support.

MAYOR’S GARDEN PARTY The Mayor’s Garden Party almost managed to take place during a break in the rain at Tewkesbury Town Hall. The Cheltenham Ukulele Band played under the shade of a marquee in the garden and when penny sized drops of rain began to fall their audience moved in with them to share the shelter. Tewkesbury Town Mayor, Cllr Karen Brennan, opened the Garden Party with Mike Protheroe and Louise Jones, proprietors of Cards & Gifts who had sponsored the event. Louise said, ‘It was lovely to be able to give something back to the community and support Karen and her charities at the same time.’

Children enjoyed testing their strength on the High Striker provided by Tewkesbury Museum as well as playing with some of the traditional wooden games. The Town Crier was on hand to conducted tours of the Council Chambers and the Mayor’s Parlour, a rare opportunity to view some of the old paintings and artefacts adorning these rooms. Coinciding with

Volunteers Week there were volunteer groups on hand to promote their activities and hopefully to attract new volunteers. Funds were raised for the Mayor’s Charities which this year are Hope for Tomorrow, which is raising money for a new mobile Chemotherapy unit at Tewkesbury Hospital and for Riverside Improvement The Ukulele Band in the Town Hall Gardens Projects. A JULY MAKEOVER with Emma Lawson of Ell Hair Salon This months lucky lady who received a makeover from Emma, is Vicky Joanne who works at Race Spec Ltd. To start with Emma used I prime to even out the skin and then mixed I tint medium and I foundation vanilla to give an airbrushed effect. For Vicky’s eyes Emma applied I colour silver to the lids and then smudged some underneath the eyes, then I flicker liner was applied to the eyelids and to finish them off nicely I flutter black mascara on top and bottom lashes. Emma brushed I glow icepop on Vicky’s cheeks to give a natural glow and for her lips she used I slick Blondie, and Vicky’s new look was completed by having her hairstyled using Eufora. Vicky was very pleased with her new look and said ‘I love the make up’. Any Tewkesbury Direct reader who would like to receive a makeover from Emma can contact her on 01684273005, or call in and see her at the salon.

POLICE NOTES with Police Sergeant Henry Wright

WEBSITE DESIGN

Your holiday checklist You've worked all year for your hard earned holiday and no doubt you're in a rush to jet off to the sunshine, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright. BUT... An empty house makes a burglars job a lot easier and can ruin your time away in minutes! Please make sure it's a holiday to remember for all the right reasons by helping reduce the risk of your home being broken while you're away by following some simple home security tips...

• Cut the lawns before you go. Overgrown lawns are a sure giveaway that your house is vacant and has been for some time. • Cancel deliveries of milk, newspapers etc. discreetly – don’t announce your departure to a shop full of people. • Make sure your house looks occupied – if you have closed curtains during the daytime, it will look like no-one is at home. It is worthwhile installing automatic timer switches to switch lights, and a radio on and off • Don’t leave valuable items like televisions or computers in view in front of windows. • Lock the garage and shed with proper security locks, after putting all your tools safely away so they can’t be used to break into your house.

• If possible get a trusted friend or neighbour to look after your home while you are away. Ask them to collect your post, draw your curtains at night and open them in the mornings and generally make the place look lived in. Be prepared to do the same for them. • Ask a neighbour to park their second car on your driveway. • Lock all outside doors and windows. If you have a burglar alarm, make sure it is set. • Don’t have your home address showing on your luggage for the outward journey. Only put this on the inside of your cases. • AND just before you actually set off it’s worth allowing a quiet couple of minutes on the doorstep to check you’ve done all you had to do and taken everything you need with you. • FINALLY... Don't announce your plans on social media.

NEWS BRIEFS COOPER ANNIVERSARY MOTOR SPORT AT PRESCOTT

So you’ve packed your bags, cancelled your deliveries and put your lights on a timer switch… and then you let all of your Facebook friends and your Twitter followers know that you are off on holiday! That’s announcing to everyone, including potential burglars, that your home will be empty. • Make sure that your security settings on your social media

The award winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is holding a three day heritage diesel festival from Friday 29th-Sunday 31st July at its Toddington base. The majority of the GWR’s fleet of heritage diesel locomotives are now well over 50 years old, so the event also pays tribute to the history of British electrical and mechanical engineering from the 1950s and 1960s. The diesel maintenance shed will be open for viewing, where there will also be a special exhibition. For more information and tickets visit www.gwsr.com

accounts are 'locked down' and only accept friend or follower requests from people that you know. • Don’t 'check in' at airports, hotels or anywhere which will broadcast your holiday location. • If you're eager to share your holiday photographs, wait until you are back home to do so. • When you are taking photographs, be careful of the location settings – you could be inadvertently letting everyone know where you are. Above all make sure you enjoy your well earned break.

Continued from page 53 do? Can you see a way out ? The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebblestrewn ground and straight away it was lost among all the other pebbles. “Oh dear, how clumsy of me!” she said. “But it doesn't matter because if you look in the bag you will find the pebble I left behind and then you will be able to see straight away which one I chose, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.” The moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty. The girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into one which was full of advantages for her father and herself. Advantages that they were happy to take as it made their lives so much easier and comfortable. Most problems do have a solution, sometimes we just need to think in a different way. It is what we have become used to calling " thinking outside the box".

VILLAGE GEARS UP FOR ANNUAL STREET MARKET

7 8 9

July has come around again and the people of Overbury, situated just north east of Tewkesbury, are busy preparing for the major event of their Summer calendar.

10

The annual Street Market, which attracts visitors from all over the area, will be held in heart of the beautiful Bredon Hill village on Saturday 9th July. The market, which has run for almost forty years, takes place between 10.00am and 12.00 noon. During a hectic two hours, there are lots of opportunities to pick up unusually high quality bargains. On the food front there are home produced cakes and goodies from Anne's Pantry, and Overbury Farms Lamb.
