The Happy Mondays are the first headline announcement for Lakefest 2019.

We have had to wait seven years for a new book by Nicole Krauss, who is probably best known for "The History of Love", but it was her last book "Great House" that convinced me she has a lot to offer her readership, and which was my book of the year way back in 2011.

"Forest Dark" is a book in two parts, as each chapter alternates between a different main character, but their stories have some connections to each other, sharing the Hilton hotel in Tel Aviv as a central location, and New York as their home city.

Jules Epstein is a successful retired lawyer, at 68, recently divorced, and against professional advice, he is actively giving away much of his worldly wealth following the death of his parents.

His old city life is slipping away from him, he behaves strangely, until he flies out to Israel where his adventures begin.

He encounters a Rabbi on the flight who he had seen earlier at a dinner where he was meant to be giving a speech; their paths crossing again lead to an invitation. Later, Epstein forsakes the Hilton for lodgings with few basic comforts. He becomes involved with the making of a film, and each strand of his new life involves further removal from his previous existence.

The other character is a novelist approaching 40 who is suffering from what might be writer's block, as she is taking time to find the subject of her new book. She imagines certain happenings at home where she has two sons, and a broken marriage.

The author travels, on impulse, to Tel Aviv staying at the Hilton, where, like Epstein there are family memories to recall. Then after a random meeting she starts some research into the lost papers of Franz Kafka. She too is on a possible wild goose chase.

Each of the two principal characters lives are multi-layered.

Krauss delivers an unusual story, achieving much within the pages of her novel. Starting in New York, relocating to Tel Aviv, an Israeli kibbutz and the desert.

Literature and art and relationships within and outside the family all add to the structure of this long awaited book.

Oldfield House

Wynyards Close, 2018

Barton Road has yielded several opportunities for former villa residences to accommodate modern housing needs, writes John Dixon.

Wynyards estate today comprises 63 homes so we can assume about 120 people live in that area.

In 1911, however, it was the 19 acre estate encompassing only Oldfield House owned

by Frederick H. Healing.

The Flour Miller lived there with his wife and two children – and five unmarried female servants: a grand total of nine people.

The earliest picture we have is the delightful painting but it would have been Healing who developed the former “cottage” into an imposing villa residence. He lived there until his death in 1947, with the estate being sold in 1954.

Reduced then to a mere 8 acres, the house was bought by a Mr. Pouppard who installed his wife as headmistress of Wynyards Boarding Preparatory School.

As far as I know that was the first time this word was used in this area, as the Vineyards are still the playing fields near the Abbey.

When Mme Pouppard

was in charge it was very old fashioned, almost Victorian, but when Robert Coulton took over it changed dramatically and it became very modern: he even changed the uniform to black and yellow.

With the decline in private education it was closed in 1962 but, by May 1965, the site was sold for the development

of 36 dwellings. On the ‘Trojan Horse’ principle of property development, the number has now almost doubled.

Healing also owned a lot of farmland on the other side of the main Ashchurch Road - that was developed as the Oldfield Estate. We are finding that so many modern developments have slightly illogical historical names.

An end to the War? The commemoration of 11th November 2018 was so moving in Tewkesbury both in the Abbey and at the Cross, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.

I was also honoured, along with Peter Minshull of the Legion, to be invited to a County Service in the Cathedral in the afternoon – we were reminded that there were 800 in the building but a hundred times more died from the County.

Over the past four years, with the assistance of the National Lottery, the Historical Society has published a book featuring biographies of our war dead from all the town’s memorials and the context in which they lost their lives.

In addition, we identified individuals whose sacrifice had been omitted. On 1st July, therefore, additional plaques for World War I and II were added to our Memorial, thanks to the work of the Memorial Working Party led by Cllrs. Cromwell and Danter.

On 10th October the British Legion and Queen Margaret’s School pupils ‘welcomed home’ Pte H. J. Waylen, whose body has rested in an unmarked grave since

We have failed to identify two – A. Jordan and S. Davies but, so far we have marked the deaths of 177 up until the Cease-Fire – but we know of at least another 20 who died.

Perhaps the last was Sgt. Ralph Hartell, M.M., in 1932.

All these missed the various deadlines for commemoration as they died because of physical and mental wounds sustained in the war.

How many other survivors died prematurely because of their war experience? Do tell us if

it was one of your relatives.

Is it now time for historians to ‘stand down?’

After all in 2019 there are the anniversaries of the outbreak of both WWII (80th) and the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland (50th).

Headaches Most people will suffer from a headache at one time or another. Often there can be an obvious explanation; too much alcohol consumption, a bang to the head or a over enthusiastic spoonful of ice cream. However, reoccurring headaches can be very worrying.

However, reoccurring headaches can be very worrying.

There are so many things which can result in headaches.

Osteopathically we mainly treat headaches which result from a mechanical change to the musculoskeletal system, most commonly the neck and shoulder region.

Maintaining good neck mobility and neck musculature is important in order to allow the anatomical structures such as nerves and blood vessels to work effectively.

A squeezing or pinching of these structures can result in headaches which commonly start at the base of the skull and radiate over the scalp.

Easing the tonicity of the muscles at the base of the neck can help to relieve the pressure on these structures and ultimately restore normal function.

Lack of good hydration can also result in singular as well as reoccurring headaches.

Trying to drink 1.5 litres of water a day will maintain good hydration.

This will not only assist with the headache but

Katie Hogg will also ultimately aid in the normal operation of many bodily functions including muscle contraction, cognitive function and joint fluidity.

The causes of headaches are wide and varied. I have only touched on a few areas here.

If you are suffering from reoccurring headaches speak to your doctor about your concerns. If the reason is deemed to be a musculoskeletal origin then osteopathy may be able to help you.

WINTER WALKING BY THE WATER Here’s an easy flat stroll from Bredon to walk off the excesses of Christmas, which takes in the popular arboretum at Kemerton Lake Nature Reserve, writes Jack. B. Walker.

Distance: approx. 3.5 miles, flat Car Parking: car parks in Bredon village Public transport: 540 bus route (not Sun/BH).

Refreshments: Royal Oak or Fox & Hounds in Bredon; The Crown Inn at Kemerton

To start the walk, park in one of the car parks on the B4079 near Bredon Village Hall. The 540 bus from Tewkesbury to Evesham also stops nearby.

Walk out of the village, passing Queensmead, until you reach a drive on the right, which leads down to the old Westmancote Nurseries (1). Walk up it and pass to the right of the greenhouses. Cross over a small footbridge (2) and follow the path around the edge of a plantation, keeping the hedge to your left.

bears sharply right, then meets Kinsham Lane. At the T junction turn right (7) and look for the sign on the left to Kemerton Lake Nature Reserve.

Walk down the track between two hedges until it meets the same track you were on earlier. Turn left (8) and walk towards the wood, which you will enter via a kissing gate.

TEWKESBURY FLOWER CLUB CHRISTMAS DEMONSTRATION

A Christmas Sleigh Run is being organised by a small team of people centred around the Village Inn at Twyning.

Sponsorship has been received from local people to build a new sleigh in the next few weeks, then, on Saturday 22nd December, Father Christmas and his Elves will drive down Tewkesbury High Street at 12 noon, to collect for the pub’s chosen charity, the Sensory Zone.

The sleigh will continue to the Tewkesbury Fields Care Home and helpers will hand out chocolates to the residents at around 2pm.

At 4pm, the Sleigh will travel through Twyning arriving to a Snowy Village Inn at 6pm.

Father Christmas will then be in his Grotto where he will see the children. There will be a children’s disco until 8pm.

We captured local mural painter Brandon Higgins, as he was just putting the finishing touches to some delightful murals on the doors of the Village Inn, and we include another seasonal painting that he has completed at a residence in Church Street, Tewkesbury, too.

Tuesday 11th December At Bushley Village Hall The doors open at 7.00 and the demonstration begins at 7.30pm.

The demonstrator is Coral Gardiner from Bath and the title of her demonstration is "Festive Highlights".

Visitors are very welcome to join us for an evening watching an expert arrange beautiful flowers with a Christmas theme, which are raffled at the end of the evening.

Entrance is only £6 and tea/coffee and mince pies are available.

When we arrived, the plant was really busy with large lorries and tractors almost continuously bringing huge trailers full of apples to be processed at the mill.

The air was thick with the all-pervading but delightful smell of freshly harvested apples.

Weston’s is a cider mill totally independent of any of the major breweries and is still managed by descendents of the original founder, Henry Weston who set up cider making at the mill in 1878.

A visitor’s first impression of the Cider Mill is perhaps that it seems to be a traditional old-fashioned brewery, probably still using oldfashioned methods to create small quantities of cider. But as we entered the plant it became clear that Weston’s is a fascinating mix of “ancient and modern” technologies.

For instance, there are 43 enormous oak vats some of them 200 years old where the juice is matured for up to 18 months.

But the impression of Weston’s being a sleepy old fashioned enterprise was soon dispelled when we saw the automatic

House restaurant, washed down with (you’ve guessed it) a delicious glass of cider.

Tewkesbury Park Introduces Mint, Its Brand-New Destination Restaurant With A Grand Launch Party Patrick Jones, general manager, of Tewkesbury Park, recently hosted the grand-opening of its brand-new destination restaurant - Mint, with a lavish party attended by corporate guests and friends of the hotel. Mint is the concluding addition of what has been a four-year major works programme, costing nearly £10 million.

Guests mingled and savoured delicious canapés prepared by executive chef, Anuj Thakur. Adhering to the restaurant's theme, Anuj served a mini selection of dishes, using local ingredients, that will appear on the new menu.

Dishes included: pork belly with honey and ginger glaze; braised shin of beef; bibury trout & coln valley smoked salmon mousse.

A selection of drinks served included Chase Gin, elderflower and fresh apple juice cocktail and a non-alcoholic green goddess with spinach, ginger and fresh apple, which was a nod to the restaurant's fresh and balanced approach.

Take away with free local delivery Here’s a tasty curry recipe using turkey leftovers from Christmas dinner. As with all pre-cooked meat, it is important to make sure it is heated through and thoroughly cooked before serving.

Ingredients: (serves 4) Diced turkey meat, (about five handfuls) 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 lg onion, chopped 1 tbsp lime juice 3 garlic cloves, chopped 1 red chilli, de-seeded and chopped finely 4 cardamom pods, (cracked open) 1 tsp cumin 1 tbsp turmeric 1 tsp garam masala 1 ground coriander seed 1 sweet potato, cubed 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1 pt turkey (or chicken) stock 8oz Greek yoghurt Handful fresh coriander Salt and pepper to taste

Method: Heat the oil in a large non-stick casserole dish, and add the onions and all of the spices. Fry gently, then reduce the heat and simmer until the onions are soft.

Add the stock and sweet potato, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes.

Add chopped tomatoes, lime juice and turkey, then heat meat through thoroughly.

Simmer to thicken the curry sauce, and check the sweet potato is soft.

Add fresh coriander to garnish, and serve with basmati or pilau rice.

LOOKING AFTER GOLDFISH The first recordings of goldfish were during the Jin dynasty (AD 265-420), writes Nigel Sligh of Tewkesbury Pet Supplies store Animals Only.

The fish were collected from the orange or yellow mutations of various species of Asian Carp which had been reared for food fish for thousands of years.

It was during the Ming dynasty (13681644) that goldfish began to be raised indoors. This led to selections of mutations which created the fancytails. In 1603 goldfish were introduced to Japan, and in 1611 they were taken to Europe via Portugal.

Before setting up an aquarium, it’s important to understand how the nitrogen cycle works.

Cycling the tank first, with a few hardy fish, will help establish a bacteria bed in the filter, which will help remove toxins from fish waste.

This ‘good bacteria’ turns the ammonia from the waste into Nitrite (which is still toxic) and then again into Nitrate (which is relatively harmless).

Too much Nitrate, however, can stress your fish, which is why regular small 10% water changes are needed.

Goldfish generally grow throughout their life time, the longest was recorded in the Netherlands, in 2008, measuring 19 inches.

Goldfish create more waste than most other fish species.

These two factors alone indicate that goldfish need a large tank in which to live comfortably, allowing them space to grow. A small tank will stunt goldfish growth, their internal organs will push against their small bodies.

‘Tis the season to be careful Christmas is an indulgent time of year where we look forward to sharing festive treats with family and friends while relaxing and enjoying good company. It is also the perfect opportunity to spoil our furry friends with a few little extra luxuries.

Lily poisoning is a life threatening emergency even if the cat looks perfectly well. If you are concerned that your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t, then please seek veterinary advice as soon as possible to minimise the potential harm to your pet.

Dogs and cats are not small furry humans, and as such metabolise substances very differently to us! This means there are many items we eat quite happily but are toxic to dogs or cats.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE WRITERS SHOWCASE THEIR WORK AT THE TIMES AND THE SUNDAY TIMES CHELTENHAM LITERATURE FESTIVAL 2018 Gloucestershire poets and prose writers enthralled their audience at the Gloucestershire Writers’ Network sell-out event at this year’s Cheltenham Literature Festival.

Rare atmospheric phenomenon seen in the Skies above Tewkesbury Local resident, Joanna Dale wrote in to ask “Did any other readers see this strange phenomenon over Tewkesbury at Dusk on the 16th October?”

“I was alarmed at first, remembering the Film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind!” But searching the internet I discovered that it is a rare “Fall streak” Cloud.

When the particles are super cooled (too cold to freeze) in a high level Cirrocumulus cloud, one particle can freeze on its own.

This causes a chain reaction that radiates outwards as other particles freeze and fall out of the cloud. The picture was taken from behind Tewkesbury Station looking towards the Mythe.

The runners up were poets Derek Healy (Lower Swell), Catherine Baker (Tewkesbury) and Marilyn Timms (Cheltenham). Marilyn also won a prize in the prose section alongside Lynda Fowke (Gloucester) and Iris Anne Lewis (Kempsford).

The competition is open to everyone of 16 and over who lives,

works or studies in Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire.

This year we were pleased to receive over 160 entries. As well as prizes and publication in the competition pamphlet, winners and runners up have the chance to appear at the prestigious The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival.

Stop and search reveals waste being transported illegally On Thursday, 8 November officers from Gloucestershire Police and Tewkesbury Borough Council undertook a joint enforcement initiative stopping vehicles that looked like they could be carrying waste, in an effort to deal with illegal flytipping and rural crime in the borough.

Officers particularly focused on Sandhurst Village, Cursey Lane and Bozzard Lane as these areas have experienced significant fly tipping.

The initiative involved a series of checks on commercial vehicles to establish whether waste was being transported legally. Seven vehicles were stopped and checked, and one of the vehicles will be subject to a fixed penalty notice

for failure to provide a waste carriers license which carries a fine of £300. Three further vehicles were subjected to additional enquiries which proved to be satisfactory.

This initiative follows a number of successful enforcement cases taken by the council to tackle fly tipping. Earlier this year a business was fined £1200 and ordered to pay costs of £1325 in

connection with waste offences.

Tewkesbury Borough Council’s lead member for Clean and Green Environment, Councillor Jim Mason, said: ”We are committed to ensuring that all waste carriers are appropriately licensed, fly tipping is a serious

criminal offence and we will continue to work closely with Gloucestershire Police to tackle this issue and other rural crimes.”

Remembrance Displays Every member of the 1st Tewkesbury Boys’ Brigade were involved in putting together the Remembrance displays both inside and outside of their HQ at Newtown.

NEWTOWN W.I. At our November meeting Jo Hiorns from ‘Simply Flowers’ demonstrated a Christmas table arrangement and gave us tips on how to cut and clean our greenery and flowers. Then she made a door wreath using a pre-assembled blue spruce ring making it a much simpler task.

These items were added to the raffle for lucky members to win.

This was followed by our A.G.M with a resume of all the activities that we have been involved with this year. We are a very busy WI and have a hard working Committee, ably led by Sylvia our President, and assisted by other WI members who help out by taking on a variety of jobs. Many thanks to you all.

The next meeting on December12th will be a Christmas themed Social Evening with a Bring and Share Supper.

Maggs finds 56 year old newspaper under the lino Maggs Thompson of Buttercup Ironing, contacted us about some old newspapers she had found underneath some flooring at her home in Barton Street.

One newspaper, dated August 31st 1962, contained stories and advertisements from Tewkesbury and district, which offer some interesting comparisons from the heady days of Beatle Mania to the present day.

Here is a story that appeared, that seems to predate the Severn Trent Water works as we now know it, and the fact that the local water supply came from the water tower on the top of Mythe Hill, now a residence.

LAKEFEST 2019: EASTNOR RISING Lakefest returns to the serenity of Eastnor Deer Park (to shake things up!), from August 8th11th. Since 2011 the Tewkesbury team have been building a music festival for families to enjoy and for 2019 they’re stepping things up a gear.

The first acts have been announced for 2019 and the Happy Mondays will be stepping on to headline Saturday night.

Announced alongside Shaun Ryder and team, as part of the main stage line-up are: Maxi Jazz (Faithless) Personal DJ Set, The Bluetones, The Real People and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

The first two acts confirmed for the Floating Globe stage are Electric Swing Circus and The Dolmen.

Of course, this is just

a starter for the hundreds of acts, activities and experiences that will fill the Deer Park in August, but the announcement has been nicely synched alongside the release of the Early Bird tickets.

Early Bird tickets are now available from lakefest.co.uk but only a limited amount are available. The Super Early Bird tickets soldout in a Lakefest record of less than 24 hours, so these are expected to fly the nest, fast.

A CORONATION DINNER TICKET Things that arrive in the Museum don’t need to be glitzy to be interesting, and this was well demonstrated recently. Liz Jones, from Ashby de la Zouch, sent us a ticket to a Coronation dinner which she thinks belonged to her grandfather, Edward Hayward. Researching it revealed some fascinating insights into the end of the Victorian era.

Edward Hayward was a boot and shoemaker, living with his family at 27 Chance Street and trading as T Hayward and Son at 115 High Street (M&Co now stands there). He was declared bankrupt in 1900, citing expenses because of family illness as the reason for overspending.

His stock, fittings and household furniture were auctioned in March 1900. Eventually, the family moved to Gloucester.

The ticket is numbered 1671. The venue is the Cross at 1.30 on June 26th 1902 and everyone is asked to bring their own knife, fork and spoon. This is effectively a street party for more than 2,000 people in the streets around the Cross.

Imagine arranging that today!

The coronation was a novel event. We’d not had one since Queen Victoria’s in 1838, and a lot had changed during her reign. This was planned to be a huge popular celebration, the first of its kind, fitting for the Kingdom’s, and Empire’s premier place in the world order.

The Government arranged for a two day holiday and 3,000 bonfires. They asked the population to assemble in convenient locations and unite in singing ‘God Save the King’.

Other arrangements were left to local com-

mittees.

Tewkesbury’s committee spawned subcommittees for bonfires, fireworks, children’s events, a bicycle parade and illuminated boats.

The Public Feeding committee, which dealt with the dinner, was the biggest.

Additionally, there would be a magnificent parade to the Abbey to a service of thanksgiving and bell ringing through the day. The decorations went up all over town, and awnings were erected around the Cross.

Then there was a national disaster. Two days before the planned coronation King Edward fell ill with perityphlitis, an abdominal cyst. This was so serious that it necessitated an operation under full anaesthetic, a very worrying procedure in those days.

It was carried out by Lord Lister and Sir Frederick Treves on the table in the Music room at Buckingham Palace. It was a success, but the coronation had to be postponed until August.

This created a quandary, as huge efforts had been made all over the country, at considerable cost. The King was insistent that the celebrations should go ahead, and in particular all the feasts.

In Tewkesbury, the decorations were left in place; there was a solemn procession to a service of Intercession at

the Abbey followed by the feast. Everything else was cancelled.

The Gloucester Artillery Band, who had been engaged for the occasion, probably

played less joyful music than they had planned.

The diners would have made the most of their meal, though.

This was a lot to learn from a slip of paper.

Why everybody deserves a little bit of retinol in their life

First of all, we need to look at the ageing process of which there are two types: Intrinsic and Extrinsic.

SOUTHWEST WRESTLING COMES TO TEWKESBURY

WELL ALLEY An article in the ‘Register’ in May 1964 headlined a report on the state of the town centre by the ‘Vigilance Committee’. It was pretty damning, and spoke mostly of decay and neglect. It did say, though ‘Attention is drawn to Well Alley with its very nice gardens and cottages and shows what can be accomplished.’ Not much has changed in Well Alley since then.

Maybe it looks as if it is, but it isn’t a typical Tewkesbury Alley. It doesn’t follow the principles for a straightforward developed burgage plot, with a passage through from the ‘front’ house and cottages in a row behind, and puzzling out what has happened over the years involves some guesswork as well as research.

It is one of the few alleys which isn’t called after the owner of the front house. Wells are a very common feature of alleys, so this must have been a special well. In his memories of the alleys, John Rogers suggested that the well, which then still existed in a garden at the Oldbury end, was the source of water for a settlement pre-dating the High Street, and which might have been connected to the Roman settlement in the Oldbury.

All things are possible!

Though the entrance passage appears to pass through No 73, the alley is really behind No 74.

The absence of cottages on the left confirm this.

There’s no evidence for

Well Alley how and when, but the passage area must have been transferred from one house to the other sometime in the past.

Presumably whilst they were in common ownership. The High Street in this area is a happy mixture of small houses and grand mansions. Most of

the Georgian fronts are hiding timber frames.

Except for Summer’s Court, where no modernisation took place at all.

The symmetry of the plots was broken well before the time when mapping gave us information about past layouts. Hereford House had a garden which occupied a space between what is now the Roses Theatre and the back of the Well Alley cottages. Well Alley had a court extending at right-angles behind Summer’s Court, containing five cottages. A clearance order in 1955 saw their demolition.

There is no trace of them now, the land being incorporated into the front house garden.

Earlier cottages may have existed along the upper part of the alley, but if they did they were demolished centuries

ago. In 1833, the sale of what is now Hereford House refers to a garden owned by L.G. Senior, part of which was sold off in lots and built upon. This must be Dover Cottages and the neighbouring block.

They remain today, with small front gardens, and a sense of order which didn’t exist in most alleys, so admired by the Town Vigilance Committee.

Well Alley’s most famous resident was William Sandilands.

Born in about 1780, he went to sea on merchant ships before being impressed into the Royal Navy whilst at Milford Haven. He was posted to the Victory, and at the Battle of Trafalgar he was a gun captain. He saw Nelson fall, and was one of those who helped carry him to the cockpit for treatment. He was there when he died.

“TEWKESBURY, ARE YOU READY?” William continued in the Navy until the end of the wars, in 1814 and was discharged without a pension. He came home to Tewkesbury where he settled down, being employed on the roads.

He hit hard times, and on the intercession of Rev. Croker Lady Nelson provided him with a pension of 2s a week from her own resources.

When she died, the pension stopped.

The

Guardians of the Poor agreed to substitute his pension, and an appeal through the ‘Times’ raised a sum to allow him comforts like a ‘pipe and a pot’. He died in 1867, reputedly the last survivor of the Victory’s crew. He has a memorial in Holy Trinity Church.

Today, there are still nice gardens and cottages. Even the wall of the tyre workshop isn’t intrusive.

(continued from page 1) Ashchurch is regarded as a prime employment location. It supports a range of high skilled companies working in high tech and innovation sectors. One of the JCS’ aims in planning for strategic economic growth is to enable existing businesses to expand/combine their locations, and attract similar kinds of businesses to move to the area.

The MoD’s decision to retain the site of the Army Camp for a further ten years has created a shortfall over 2,100 new homes, as the area was designated for residential development.

The area enjoys excellent proximity to Junction 9 of the M5; but the JCS recognises there are severe

capacity and congestion issues at this junction and along the A46 which must be addressed to facilitate strategic development and provide site access.

The plan outlines the need to improve train operations from Ashchurch Station, reduce the number of vehicles on the road and provide sustainable transport alternatives. These include a network of cycle and quiet routes using green infrastructure and natural assets.

It recognises the opportunity to create a new community heart and character for Ashchurch, based around St. Nicholas Church. There are also plans to strengthen the functional relationship and physical connections between Tewkesbury and the surrounding area. The consultation event will be at Tewkesbury Town Hall, Thursday 13th December, 4.00-7.00pm.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater Far too many people let their mouth run away with them before they actually get their brain into gear, writes David Slater.

I am sure you can think of times when you have noticed this with people around you. I am sure, too, that you may even have noticed it in yourself on occasions.

Words are powerful. We need to use them carefully.

How would you use words if they were rationed. Just take a look at this story based on life in a Spanish monastery.

The monastery was a very quiet place. The silence which usually reigned, was only interrupted by the chanting of the monks at their various services during the day. Otherwise nothing was to be heard except the singing of the birds in the monastery gardens and the mooing of the cows that the monks had to provide their milk and also make cheese to sell.

Young men usually started as novice monks within months of leaving school.

The first thing that they learned was that were expected to obey

many rules.The first rule was that they should maintain silence at all times except, of course, during services.

They were, however, allowed an exception to the rule and that was that every two years they were permitted to speak. Not quite as wonderful as it sounds, I am afraid, as they were only allowed to speak two words !

One young man had just completed his first two years and was invited by the Abbot of the monastery to make his two word presentation .
