Te Urewera
Tribal Checkpoints
The TĹŤhoe tribals are setting up checkpoints to monitor travel in Te Urewera. The main issue being the non-essential travel that is happening - and the health risk that, that brings to the Tribal communities.
The checkpoints will reinforce the message that;
Staying Home, Will Save Lives.
All Tribals have acknowledged that some of their own whÄ nau are not following containment rules, causing concern, and warranting a response. WhÄ nau travelling unnecessarily out of Te Urewera poses the biggest threat of bringing Covid-19 into our tribal communities.
The Check-Points Priority will be sharing messages that will stop the spread of COVID-19 • Stay Home – Save Lives. If it is not essential to travel – stay home. • Stay within your bubble • If you need support where to get that from • Hunting is not permitted during the lockdown • What we need to do to stop the spread
Check-Points will be set up at; • Waikaremoana • Ruatāhuna • Rūātoki • Te Waimana
Each checkpoint will have; • Clear signage • 2 community kaitiaki • A monitor register recording names and licence plate numbers • Reporting will be to Tribal GM’s
Kaitiaki at these checkpoints will not have enforcement powers, they will be warm, and of a fair nature, remembering that their care is shown through educating whÄ nau of the risks of COVID-19. Kaitiaki will not engage in any hostilities, and any bad behaviour will be followed up at a later date. Those that are travelling through Te Urewera to provide essential services will be able to carry on their business as usual.
Educate & Monitor
That is the contribution to the wellbeing of whÄ nau that we are aiming to achieve by these Tribal Checkpoints.
