We Became Responsible for… • The issues of the scale of Te Urewera 228k ha and the issues at the local tribal level. • The governance, management, planning and operations within Te Urewera. • 1500 structures ranging from signs to the Waikaremoana water and sewerage plant That includes: 244 buildings covering 6000 sqm that can accommodate 700 people 100km of fences 368 signs There are also 115 tracks in Te Urewera covering 763 km
We Became Responsible for… • A Boating Fleet of 6 boats, skipper licensing, boat maintenance, and passenger safety. • Public safety throughout Te Urewera and Supporting Emergency responses • 2 lakes and their boat moorings • Authorising and managing Friendship agreements (concessions). • 18k manuhiri who have made bookings on the Great Walk since 1 July 2017 – 30 June 2018. • 3t of rubbish Nov 2017 – Feb 2018 from 1 campsite alone.
We Became Responsible for… • The use of toxins, but the non-use of 1080 and brodificum. • Working out the toxin versus trapping mix and then the current and future resourcing needs. • We carried 1,529kg of bait and 1,410kg of new self re-setting traps over 4162km and removed over 7,764 pests from traps (April – October 2018) - 3147 possums - 192 stoats - 4425 rats • 25,292ha of Te Urewera has some form of active pest control • About 10-11% of Te Urewera has some form of pest control....40% if you include active possum fur blocks

Protecting our wildlife – kaka, kiwi, kokako, whio, tuna. Balancing out the predators – rats, possums, stoats. Worrying about too much and too little deer and no pigs. The effect climate change is having on the eating and breeding patterns of our predators and our kai pataka. • Lagarasiphon weed invasion pulling 1,418 major weed plants from Lake Waikaremoana
We Became Responsible for… • Reducing our use of toxin (cholecalciferol for rat control) by 82% This is the only toxin currently in use (inc. Herbicides) • In 2016-2017 toxin was used for rat control over 1416ha, in 2017-2018 toxin was used over 254ha. • 107 possum blocks for Te Urewera, 41 blocks are vacant; 54 possum permits issued to holders who cover 106,508 hectares of Te Urewera • Issued 2438 hunting permits (Jan – Oct 2018) - Waikaremoana = 1835 - Ruataahuna = 986 - Waimana = 762 - Ruatoki = 556
We Became Responsible for… • 59 pig dog hunting permits were issued for 133 dogs (May – Oct) • 47 kiwi aversion certificates issued (April & August 2018) and 115 dogs trained • 24 kiwi were actively monitored - Released 5 from active monitoring - 3 adult mortalities (+ 1 infertile egg) - 16 remain under active monitoring - 5 of these kiwi remain to be tracked (3 likely because of nesting)

We cared about…. • Enabling a rescue programme to Meth addiction by developing our own rehab response. • The health of whanau • In January 2019, we break ground on the 3rd Tūhoe Medical Centre in Ruatahuna. • 10,884 appointments were made at our Medical Centres, but 6,329 patients arrived. • We treated all kinds of unwellness …
We cared about….
Na Mauiui • Chronic ear problems in this area, especially in young children. • Heart & Diabetes • COPD – Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • Skin issues- impetigo, eczema, boils and warts • Increase in STD cases for under 25yrs
Na Uauatana • Weight problems – leading to heart and diabetes problems. • Unhealthy eating, dietary issues. • Whanau wanting alternative options to vaccination. Na Paina • Seeing a high level of whanau supporting their unwell whanau member. • A decrease in smoking and an uptake in accepting help to quit • Increase in women coming into do their cervical smears
We cared about…. • Moving whanau to healthy homes. • 33 homes assessed by Tribal’s. • 6 home repairs completed – 5 new sceptics, new plumbing, sanitary water supply, new bathroom, new toilets, new roofs. • 6 homes in progress. • Prioritised by a Tribal determined standard of ‘vulnerability’. • Current trial is aimed at developing criteria for transparent and wider access of the support.
We cared about…. • Whanau being arrested for low level offending. • With the Police, we avoided court convictions for 12 whanau by providing alternative ‘sentencing’, through the Mending Room. • We spend time with each to bring to light their true heartache and fix a ‘sentence’ to help mend the broken parts. • 4 had served lengthy prison terms; 17 – 34 years; generally regarding prison as a rest from complexity of their lives.

The $18m purchase of the Manawa Forest Waikaremoana – Wireless Access Nature’s Road Trial Completed now at Stage 2 Effective District and Regional Council relationships – with collaboration underway on major infrastructure development – roading, water and waste. • Manawaru – TUT collaboration on Te Tii, supporting with systems setup. • • • •
We delivered... • Enabling workshops on understanding the Trust Fund. • Feasibility input into increased services in the Medical Centres. • New builds – Te Urewera operations sheds, Taneatua Village Concept design and supporting Stage 2 development at Te Tii. • A restructure of the TQL and growing the value to $30m while also moving to voluntary shelving of Paua and Crayfish to conserve fisheries health.
