Procedure during COVID-19
If we must farewell a loved one during this time of lockdown, the inability to practice our normal tanihana tikana will be testing. The Tribal’s, the police and the funeral homes are working together to bring as much relevant information together to help whÄ nau cope with tanihana.
This is what we have worked out…
The health and well-being of our Tribal communities is paramount. Level 4 bring on some tough rules: • We have 24hrs from passing to burial. • Gathering together for tanihana is not permitted during Alert Level 4. • Cultural protocols and practices will not be able to be followed during Alert Level 4 in the same way we are used to.
• COVID-19 related deaths will follow a separate and distinct process. • Whānau from outside of the Bubble cannot participate in the tanihana. They are a risk to transmission of COVID. • Kaiwhakarite – Tribal GM’s can help liaise with police, funeral home and marae. The Kaiwhakarite can provide notification to the police that the nehu has occurred. • Police will attend sudden deaths in full PPE spacesuit get up – please don’t be freaked out by this.

WhÄ nau Contact your Kaiwhakarite as soon as practical when someone has passed away
Whānau When a whānau member passes away at home, there is nothing to answer to this despair. When you can, the whānau needs to contact the GP who will determine the cause of death. Where the GP cannot do this a Post Mortem will be required and the police become involved to help transport your whānau to your nearest centre. The whānau can then arrange for the burial. Gravediggers from outside of your Bubble may be needed to support you. Your Kaiwhakarite can help with that.
Kaiwhakarite Your Kaiwhakarite are the first point of contact when someone passes away.
Kaiwhakarite Contacting your Kaiwhakarite means that they can help you: · With what to do if a whānau member passes away at home for example: the whānau needs to contact their GP who determines whether a Post Mortem might be necessary. · Supporting with grave diggers. · Supporting with confirming and or arranging the marae representative. · Supporting with the supply of PPE for gravediggers and marae representatives from outside of the whānau bubble.
