Long term wealth and prosperity is made through building or establishing businesses and activities that degrade, exploit, and deplete the natural resources of the planet.

It is just not sustainable. Businesses that operate like this are no longer supported by the conscious consumer and will not buy these products or services. Nor will investors invest in these businesses.

New world thinking is increasingly based on Te Ao Māori, framed by the concept of sustainability and working in unison with Papatuanuku.

Economic development is simply about job creation.

The world is dynamic and evolving and the principle of a ‘job for life’ no longer applies. For example, advances in technology continue to make many roles redundant.

The labour force needs to be constantly learning, changing and evolving.

Education, training and development is critical to maximise the employability of individuals. Individuals need to be agile, be able to adapt and be prepared for ongoing change.

Old economy refers to industry and manufacturing.

The old economy relies on traditional methods of doing business rather than leveraging new cutting-edge technology. The old economy refers to industries that have not changed significantly despite advances in technology for example steel, agriculture, and manufacturing. Climate change and new technologies impact the old economy, but most of the processes have been the same for a century.

The new economy refers to high growth innovation substantially focused on the internet, internet technology, and cloud technology (e.g., IOT, social media, cloud storage, e-commerce, streaming, sharing, big data, fintech, AI). The new economy is progressively disrupting and, in many instances, displacing the old economy.

Increasingly, these industries and activities are being regulated against, and will over time, become obsolete.

We need to GROW.

Continuing to grow is not sustainable. We are already living beyond the means of the planet so growing more is not the answer.

The new economy is in the business of providing innovation for the easy and fast exchange of goods and services.

The new economy is ‘how do we do more with less’, ‘how do we do things more efficiently, more productively, with less resources especially non-renewable resources and less impact on the planet’.
