The Challenge The UK Government Sustainable Urban Economic Development programme is supporting 12 intermediary cities in Kenya.

Kisii, Market and Public Square

Each of the municipalities has its unique character/offerings with cross cutting challenges that are shared with other municipalities such as climate vulnerability, economic performance, or poorly performing assets (ie.: markets, bus stations, rivers), inadequate urban infrastructure, fragmented supply chains, lack of skills and inclusion of marginalised groups.

The Approach (Planning & Design Intent) During the assignment, the Atkins team, in close collaboration with local communities and stakeholders have developed municipality specific Urban Economic Plans (UEPs) to provide a holistic development strategy for each city and town. The UEPs, identify competitive advantages of each municipality and articulate a roadmap to address some of the key challenges hindering socio-economic growth. The SUED principles directly link with the USDGs and guide the development of inclusive, climate-resilient interventions that will support local job creation, economic growth and contribute to creating resilient places.
