WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NATURE Teton Science Schools are offering over 100 courses this year. Educational fun is shared across six program areas and two campuses. The diversity of teaching faculty and research staff within various disciplines has led to an organization which more closely resembles a university than a traditional nature center. Teton Science Schools are the University of Nature. We offer learning adventures to school groups, families, teachers, and graduate students. The National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education recently published a report which concluded that education and research are not progressing at the pace required by the magnitude of the environmental challenges facing this nation. This report called for new participatory approaches to environmental education. Who better to lead this interdisciplinary challenge than the University of Nature. Join us in the Tetons for some serious fun!

Program Size and Location: Typical program size varies from 12-15 participants per session. All programs meet at the Jackson Campus of Teton Science Schools unless specifically noted in description.

Space is Limited: Registrations will be processed in the order they are received and must be accompanied by full payment for most programs. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express as well as money orders or personal checks. An acceptance packet with all pertinent details will be sent to confirm your enrollment. Needbased financial aid is available for most programs. Cancellation Policy: If you cancel, a refund will be issued up to 30 days prior to the start date, less a $25.00 administrative fee per program. If less than 30 days, refunds will not be issued.Â Although we make every effort to adhere to our program schedule, extenuating circumstances may cause Teton Science Schools to cancel a program, in which case a full refund will be issued.

Put on your lab coat and goggles and grab your beakers! Ask questions, propose hypotheses, develop methods, and collect data during a week full of science experiments. Have you ever wondered how to make a bottle rocket, build a simple machine, or why storms form? Come investigate with us and create your own science experiment.

Imagine, explore, read, and write. This week is for young authors who dream of writing and publishing their own book. Learn about different writing styles as you read stories from around the world and then use those examples to develop your own voice. Refine, edit, and leave the week with a complete and engaging story.

Grades 1–4 Immerse yourself in Spanish through natural and cultural activities including language, arts, and outdoor exploration. With instructors who speak only Spanish, your days will be filled with singing, playing, hiking, cooking, and dancing. End the week with a family fiesta.

Test and develop your money management skills with other young entrepreneurs. First learn important life lessons about earning, spending, saving, and investing. Then put your skills to the test by managing your own simulated portfolio and household budget. Leave this hands-on, minds-on course familiar with topics such as banking, stocks, credit, and mortgages.

Explore nature with a camera and depict the diverse Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem through photographs. Learn to compose intriguing pictures, choose compelling subjects, and photograph fast and slow moving objects. Get creative in telling your story of amazing adventures among animals, plants, new friends, and mountain vistas.

Life and careers in the outdoors require many different styles of writing. Learn to be a well-rounded outdoor writer and researcher. Observe life in the outdoors, interpret the scene, and record the story as a poem, research paper, or short story. Build your writing skills as you explore canyons and hilltops in Jackson Hole.

Learn the basics of documentary film-making from a professional filmmaker. The first week provides beginners with an understanding of the equipment, shooting, interviewing, writing, and editing. The second week allows more advanced students to hone skills and focus on specific aspects of film-making. Class is open to high school students and adults.

Build the skills, habits, and attitudes you need to score higher on test day. Review crucial math, reading, English, science, and writing skills as well as test-taking techniques for each problem type. Take practice tests and receive feedback for improvement. Your instructor will teach with enthusiasm, clarity, and empathy. Books and test preparation materials are included.

Mark waypoints of interesting trailside discoveries, hide your own treasure, and post GPS coordinates for other adventurers to seek. Work together on an off-trail hiking and route finding challenge. Learn fly fishing skills from experts on the beautiful waterways of Jackson Hole. National Military Family Association

School and Youth Groups

Teton Science Schools are working with the National Military Family Association to help empower military children and their families and honor the sacrifices they make for our country. The National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple Camps honor our Nation’s youngest heroes while engaging them in having fun, making friends, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Operation Purple Camps are open to military children of all ranks and services while Family Retreats help families reconnect after deployment. Teton Science Schools provide yearround, custom educational programs for student and youth groups from across the country. Typically three to seven days in length, these programs are developed collaboratively with school leaders, assuring that educational standards and objectives are integrated into program design. Students stay in dormitory-style buildings on the Jackson Campus or in rustic cabins on the Kelly Campus while exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

Experience the thrill of collaborating with others while making a difference in Jackson Hole. Learn about the amazing projects being undertaken locally, while working with community leaders. Get wet and dirty and go home each day knowing that you helped make the community a better place.

Entering Grades 3–9

Become immersed in community projects which may meet the service hour requirements of school and youth groups. Participants will learn collaborative skills in a fun hands-on environment, while volunteering with local leaders. As a way to develop an ethic of philanthropy, participants will donate a portion of granted funds to a local organization of his or her choice.

Entering Grades 7–9 Get dirty and have fun while volunteering with friends, developing leadership skills, gaining service credit, and making a difference in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Partner on exciting service adventures with local organizations in addition to the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service.

Immerse your children in exploration of nature through structured play and learning on the Jackson Campus of Teton Science Schools. Imaginations will thrive as they build, dig, and hike in the forests and open space surrounding the Pre-Kindergarten classrooms of Journeys School and enjoy one excursion off-campus. Your child will be encouraged to become active and at ease outdoors while learning that the natural world provides endless adventures. From bears to badgers, and wolves to wapiti, discover the predators and prey that make up the food chain of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Investigate skulls, scat, tracks, and shelters and learn how to look for other animal signs.

Learn how Davey Jackson’s namesake valley has emerged from its tumultuous history of murderers, horse thieves, and scallywags to become home to one of the nation’s most popular national parks. You will visit historic cabins, ranches, and geological sites to learn the exciting history of this area.

There are so many questions to explore in nature. Each day we’ll investigate a different natural puzzle and seek out our own answers. Observing animal behavior and assessing stream health are examples of field research projects that you will complete with the use of scientific tools.

Evening with the Elk Elk Viewing and Dinner

Spend an evening investigating the habits and habitats of the bugling elk of Jackson Hole. The evening begins with an interpretive slideshow, followed by a hearty family-style dinner at the historic Kelly Campus of Teton Science Schools. Sunrise and Sunset Expeditions offer a fourhour introduction to the wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, taking advantage of the times of day when the animals are the most active. Wildlife Discovery Expeditions provide a full day of opportunities to view and learn about wildlife.

Old Faithful Expeditions are a wonderful opportunity to explore the wildlife, scenery, and history of the world’s first National Park. Lower Loop Expeditions include a tour of the Old Faithful area, a guided geyser walk, lunch, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, both upper and lower falls, Yellowstone Lake, and a drive through Grand Teton National Park.

These popular two-day to seven-day expeditions are the premier wildlife viewing trips in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and vary depending on the season. All multi-day expeditions include specified hotel accommodations and meals, snacks and beverages, all entrance fees and round-trip transportation from Jackson.

Private and Customized Expeditions Length: 4–8 hours Wildlife Expeditions specializes in developing customized private wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Responsible Wildlife Observation

Teacher Learning Center Professional Development for Teachers

Wyoming Stream Team Jul 18â€“Jul 25, 2010 $100 (6 days, 5 nights) This classroom and field-based course is available to residents of Wyoming and residents of watersheds in neighboring states. The program focuses on training in water quality monitoring and includes monitoring supplies, meals, lodging, and two graduate credits. Participants will build the foundation to initiate monitoring projects in their home communities. The workshop will culminate in a full day of hands-on stream testing. Participants will receive a full set of monitoring equipment upon completion of the workshop and will be eligible for a follow-up visit during the academic year from Wyoming Stream Team staff to assist in their monitoring projects. Based at the Kelly Campus of Teton Science Schools.

Graduate Program Live, Learn, and Teach in Jackson Hole

Based at the Kelly Campus of Teton Science Schools located in Grand Teton National Park, the Graduate Program of Teton Science Schools is a year-long program in place-based teaching, field science, and environmental education. Students integrate academic course work with intensive mentored teaching practicum. Graduates have successfully pursued careers as teachers at all grade levels in public and private schools, founders and directors of non-profits, science centers and environmental education programs, naturalists for governmental agencies and non-profit organizations, researchers, and natural resource managers.

Customized Experiences with the Teacher Learning Center The Teacher Learning Center offers day, multi-day, and year-long custom experiences for schools and other educational organizations. Programs focus on an introduction to or renewal of place-based learning and use research-based and innovative educational strategies. Customized experiences may include residential stays at the Jackson Campus of Teton Science Schools and on-site training at regional schools. Please call for more details.
