We're well into spring. Not that you'd really know it yet, but I guess Auckland's dams are pretty full by now, so that's something. There have been a few hints of sun to tide us over. Every year at about this time, we do a review of what you, our treasured customers, have avidly purchased en masse over the past year, also known as the Glengarry Greatest Hits issue. It's a bit of an institution now, one that stretches back to at least 2007. The wines that rock out the door do so for a reason. These, then, are the wines you collectively bought the most of, which means they've been road tested, peer reviewed and found to be decidedly up to scratch. The People's Choice! When you're standing in front of a mind-numbing array of options (or in these times, perhaps you're sitting), this can be very useful information to have at your fingertips, especially as we saunter towards sunnier weather populated with gatherings of our friends and whānau. And while you're there, check out our hand-selected spirits range. Until recently, all we had to worry about was whether we were getting a good summer. How times have changed. Fingers crossed all our Christmases will be covid-free. There's something we never had to say a couple of years back. Stay safe. Stay positive and soak up the warmth. Arohanui,

Peach, grapefruit and nutty, spicy notes on a creamy palate

MARLBOROUGH

Manaaki is a marae-based enterprise creating authentic, Māori-inspired condiments. It is based out of Omaka Marae in Marlborough, with a connection to Lake Chalice wines, as winemaker Chloe Gabrielsen is one of the Manaaki 'Aunties'. Back in the day, the pātaka (larder) was always filled with homemade preserves, chutneys and sauces. Using no artificial flavours, no artificial colourings, nothing served on the kai table was store-bought. Manaaki has been created drawing on this spirit, offering a range of traditionally homemade kai from the heart, blending native ingredients with freshly-sourced produce to create condiments and preserves with a Māori inspired taste.

Overdelivers in so many ways. Full-bodied, with rich, creamy aromas of white peach, grapefruit underscored with nutty, spicy oak notes. The palate is elegantly creamy with well balanced acidity. Bargain.

Kawakawa can best be described as a native bush basil with aromatic, peppery-minty flavour notes, traditionally used in cuisine and as a rongoā Māori, or natural remedy. Manaaki's Kawakawa Jelly has a sweet apple base with refreshing aromatic notes from the kawakawa; it's a Māori version of mint jelly. This is a knockout winner teamed with crackers and your favourite creamy blue cheese or other sharp tasting hard cheeses. It's also a perfect addition to lamb burgers and cold cut meats. Or, even try it as a glaze on a flan or on pulled pork for sliders. Sweet or savoury, it works with both.

Grower champagnes Many vignerons in Champagne sell their fruit to the large established houses, but a good number of small, family-run units craft their own champagnes from their vineyards. The wines are often bottled on the premises and come in a diverse range of distinctive styles reflecting the idiosyncrasies of their particular terroir. Grower champagnes are not a new concept, but the diversity, complexity and individuality of these boutique styles sets them apart from the mainstream. With corporatization of the industry so prevalent, many aficionados are developing a taste for these smaller scale, handcrafted champagne styles. We've gone there ourselves (when you still could) and selected some of the very best.

The crus of

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is part of the Burgundy wine region where the Gamay variety reigns supreme. The region has a somewhat tarnished past from a combination of rushing very young wine to market every third Thursday of November under the banner of Beaujolais Nouveau, and the use of the carbonic maceration process to produce its fruity and forward styles. The carbonic maceration technique produces wines for early consumption: the grapes are vinified in sealed vats, with the grapes at the bottom crushed by those at the top in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. While these two styles are still alive and well in Beaujolais, a new generation of winemakers are devotedly redeeming the Beaujolais reputation as they employ more traditional vinification processes to craft superior wines from Gamay.

Rich and balanced, with a nose of red fruits and wild strawberry. A well crafted wine that warrants cellaring

CHÂTEAU DE CHÉNAS

EXCEPTION LES PERELLES MOULIN-À-VENT 2017

$27.99

In fact, the region has become a hotbed for new young winemakers, with plenty of experimentation going on. There are 10 crus (officially designated superior growing sites) in Beaujolais, each with its own distinctive characteristics.

Chénas: Generous, floral wines that warrant cellaring.

Traditional red wine techniques here, with no implementation of carbonic maceration. The nose is pleasantly intense, offering notes of black fruits; the palate is full-bodied, soft tannins leading to a long and delicate finish.

Moulin-à-Vent: The granite in the soil here creates intense, structured wines with strong tannins. Rose, spice, ripe fruit.

CASE OF 6 $26.99/BOTTLE

Saint-Amour: lively, delicate, bright red with cherry characters. Juliénas: Earthy, savoury. Florals, red fruits and spice.

Fleurie: A delicate cru, the wines full of violet characters and luscious red fruits. 4 078 0

Chiroubles: Its fruity and delicate wines are considered the most typically Beaujolais. Morgon: Full bodied and powerful with strong personalities. Régnié: Delicate, supple wines with aromas of red fruits. Brouilly: Firm, full-bodied, deeply-coloured and muscular. Côte de Brouilly: At a higher altitude around the summit of Mont Brouilly, these wines offer minerality and precision.

| GEORGES DUBOEUF FLEURIE 2019 | $29.99 | CASE/6 $27.99/BOTTLE

Tobermory This boutique Scottish distillery punches well above its weight

Kiwi Gin Supremos Scapegrace upped their game with a premium small batch vodka. Now they're doing it again with their delicious new ready-to-drink range

Founded as a fishing port in 1788, Tobermory is a small village of only 1,000 people, situated on the Isle of Mull in Scotland’s inner Hebrides. After a long closures during the 1900s and 2000s, the current owners closed the doors to spend some time and money on much needed maintenance and renovation. The doors were reopened, and the stills fired up as Tobermory Distillery in 2019. All under the eye of one of the youngest distillery managers in the world, 27-year-old Cara Gilbert. | RM

Aperitif I TALIAN ST Y LE!

Add an orange glow to your summer with this delicious low-alcohol aperitivo

Tolstoy said spring is the time of plans and projects, and if you read that and thought that it’s a great time to try and up your Spritz game then pull up a chair, you’re one of us now. During the Hapsburg domination of Italy, Austrian soldiers found the local wines too alcoholic so took to watering them down, including the fizzers. Spritz then comes from the German spritzen, 'to spray.' Combine with a traditional Italian orange-based aperitif and you get sunshine in a glass. 20

So there you have it; not just a warm weather concoction, it’s cultural. |

BRAVE

BREWING CO TIGERMILK IPA 500ML | $8.99

Brave! Brave is an apt name for this plucky Hawke’s Bay brewery. Relatively new to the industry, Hastings’ Brave Brewing Co. take a fresh look at some of the more traditional beer styles. Initially brewing at university as a hobby, Matt Smith's interest was honed while travelling through Europe and the US with his wife Gemma. Matt and Gemma took the plunge in 2014 after success at the 2013 NZ Home Brew Championship. Brave Brewing’s strength lies both in its range of styles and the influence of two great beer brewing regions. While you'll find your pilsner, lager and the obligatory range of pale ales, Matt isn’t afraid to add red, brown and wheat ales to his regular line-up. Not ignoring the current market trend, the Tigermilk is an exceptionally well-balanced IPA, and the beer that introduced this happy writer to the Brave range. | PC

CRAFTBEER Born to brew might seem like quite the bold statement, but in the case of Australia’s Coopers Brewing it’s not far from the truth. Thomas Cooper established Coopers Brewing in 1862. Six generations or 159 years later, you’re more than likely to bump into a Cooper working somewhere within the brewery. Coopers apply a unique brand of traditional brewing methods that don’t deviate from those Thomas used for the original brews – the naturally conditioned ales and stouts get a little extra yeast after the first fermentation so the beers go through a secondary fermentation in bottle or can, the brews all having a somewhat cloudy appearance and unabashedly showing their character. To get a perfect Coopers pour, it's recommended to roll the vessel before pouring to glass. | K A
