Hello from Autumn. It’s been such a fabulous summer, we thought we’d continue to clutch wildly onto the feeling and go to Spain where, we’re told, it’s quite warm. The Spanish do a great job of channelling that wonderful European sensibility that says life is all about putting the right wine with the right food, and the right company, and just going for it. If you’ve not yet stepped aboard the Spanish bandwagon, there’s no time like the present; you’ll quickly see what you’ve been missing. No other country has turned its wine industry around in such dramatic fashion, via a combination of opportunity, technological advances and a fearless new generation of winemakers. Theirs are exotic, heady, muscular, succulent and sexy wines that have converted a generation as the world discovers the exciting new flavours and outstanding value of the offerings from one of the oldest vine cultures in Europe.

PRIVATE BIN ORGANIC MERLOT 2017 CASE OF 6 $11.99 A BOTTLE

$12.99

Villa Maria lead the charge, as ever, with this amiably-priced, BioGro certified offering, the soft, generous palate of sweet fruit combining with subtle spice and silky tannins to make this an excellent food wine. The organically grown grapes come off VM’s Joseph Soler vineyard.

Founded by Sir George Fistonich in 1961, Villa Maria Estate has risen to become New Zealand’s most successful international wine brand. For a number of years New Zealand’s most awarded winery, earlier this year it added another significant feather to its cap: at the Drinks International Awards Ceremony held in Germany, Villa Maria was named the third-most-admired wine brand in the world. Closer to home are the 12 gold medals and three trophies from the recent Royal Easter Show Wine Awards. Anyway, you get the picture. What’s impressive is that the horde of medals and awards is not restricted to their top releases, but can be found across the entire Villa Maria portfolio. According to Sir George, the secret of their success doesn’t lie in chasing accolades, but in focusing on making superior quality wines that have instant appeal for the people who drink them.

In the central Iberian plateau, Almansa enjoys hot summers reaching temperatures up to 38 Celsius, down to -6 degrees in winter. This part of Spain is wide and expansive, a sea of flat plains with little rain and copious wind farms and solar panels. Grenache and Tempranillo love the heat and the long growing period found in these harsh conditions.

One of Spain’s oldest DOs, the rejuvenated Bierzo is home to intense, thrilling reds produced from the local Mencia grape, sourced from its steep vineyards and their old vines. Just along a bit, on Spain’s north-western coast, is Rías Baixis, where the favoured variety is the white Albariño grape and the warm sun and cooling sea breezes deliver wines that are crisp and fresh.

100% Tempranillo fruit and scintillating raspberry and red fruit characters. This is a great introduction to what the region can produce, and very representative too. A medium-bodied red wine with great balance between tannins and acidity.

Located within the foothills of the Pyrenees north of Barcelona, Empordà is a relatively unknown wine region. The varietal mix includes Spain’s mainstay Garnacha (Grenache) along with international varietals Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines lack the high prices that would accompany a greater international rep, so there is some good value to be found.

We’d be the first to say that showing appreciation for your mother should not be restricted to one day of the year (ditto for the love of your life and Valentine’s Day, but that’s another story). Himalayan wine? Who knew? Ao Yun have been working out what that is since 2013. Frenchman Mazence Dulou is Estate Director and Winemaker. Born and raised in le Sauternais, he brings Gallic smarts to the operation, moving his family to the beautiful village of Adong in the breathtaking Yunnan province. With its warm year and large harvest, Mazence considers the 2015 Ao Yun’s greatest vintage since they began. A blend of four villages, 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Cabernet Franc, the wine is voluptuous and spicy, with a suitably exotic nose, a soft, dense, rounded palate and a long, mineral-edged finish. Embrace the new!

Perched on an ancient glacial slope, Akarua’s 25 Steps is a stunning single vineyard site in Central Otago’s Pisa, a dramatic terraced vineyard covering 120m of elevation that is planted entirely in a wild mix of Pinot Noir clones from Pommard and Dijon. Highly undulating and exposed, with a multitude of natural microclimates, the flavours from this vineyard are wonderfully complex and utterly unique. The rosé is a seamless profusion of florals and strawberry with notes of cherry, hazelnut and mandarin, a delicate smoky thread, fine acidity and a subtle mineral edge. The Pinot Noir exudes haunting aromatics of raspberry and cherry on a vibrantly textural and smoky palate with a pronounced mineral note and lovely taut acidity. 11341
