The rare Diamond Dankowskie Rye is a bakers-grade grain, containing less starch than other grains, meaning it yields less spirit. For this reason, it is not usually used for distillation. Once carefully fermented and distilled however, it has the potential to display a broad spectrum of unique textural and flavour characteristics unmatched by any other grain. For this reason, both these vodkas are unfiltered. The two vodkas use the same rye, same yeast and same process, but taste and feel very different.
NEW SINGLE ESTATE VODKA FROM We are no strangers to talking about terroir when it comes to wine. This French term describes, and presumes, that the land from where the grapes are grown imparts a unique quality specific to that particular site. The region, the weather, the slope of the vineyard, the underlying soil structure etc, are all contributing factors. This is why the Pinot Noir from one Burgundian vineyard can taste completely different from the vineyard below.
The Lake Bartezak Estate is found in the Lake District of north-eastern Poland, where the winters are long and very cold. This produces a vodka which is fresh and delicate. The nose is bright and fragrant, the palate delicate with notes of spearmint and hay. A very light, very elegant vodka to drink neat or in a martini. With the release of two new Belvedere Single Estate Rye vodka’s, this is the first time we have seen this so clearly with vodka. These are made from the rare Diamond Dankowskie Rye, cultivated on very different single estates in Poland. Each has a remarkably different character, demonstrating vodka’s capacity for distinct and diverse flavour profiles.
The Smogóry Forest Estate is in a small village in the heavily forested far west of Poland. The low lying land allows warm and humid Atlantic air to flow across the region, keeping the summers long and the winters mild. This helps develop a rich, bold and savoury vodka. Very luscious and viscous in the mouth, with an umami savoury side, this would be fantastic in a cocktail with strong ingredients.
