WELCOME TO THE NAKED HOP! A monthly publication coming to you from the Glengarry team of beer experts, where we explore everything beer related. Here you’ll find an in depth look into the beer world and what makes it tick.

In the seventh issue of The Naked Hop, we sample the tastes of Wellington based Whistling Sisters Fermentery after their success as a People’s Choice Award favourite at Beervana 2018, an age old question is answered when we compare the Pale Ale and the IPA and we celebrate the winners of this year’s Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards. PALE ALE vs IPA...

For those new to, or with only a passing interest in, craft beer there is very little separating a Pale Ale from an India Pale Ale, except perhaps the expectation of a spicy component to the brews flavour. Even those with early onset of the craft beer itch, or a fully developed hop obsession can be forgiven for having only the slight inkling as to what makes one beer a Pale Ale and the other an IPA. In the briefest of terms, one could consider the IPA to be Pale Ale’s bigger, more hop laden brother. But is there more to it?

A search through dusty history books (or on the internet) would reveal the term “Pale Ale” appearing in the early 18th Century to describe beers made from lighter malts resulting in lighter beers and there for comparatively a pale ale. These beers were deafeningly lighter in malt structure, highlighting the hops and gave

rise to the British beers under the moniker “Bitters”.

So… put simply, an IPA is at heart an intensified Pale Ale, and it's fair to say not much has changed with IPAs remaining the bigger, hairier brother of the classic Pale Ale. But the simple answer of “IPAs are a stronger, bolder Pale Ale” is true, it's not so 100% of the time. Whilst one brewery’s Pale Ale will be a mellower offering compared with their India Pale Ale expression, it may in fact out muscle another brewery’s IPA.

Now that we’ve explained the difference between a Pale Ale and IPA I can almost hear someone asking, “So what’s an APA then smart guy!?’ The American Pale Ale, much like anything they get their hands on in the USA, is the same but different in an American way! Replacing the European hops for American varieties these beers have a piney, citrus character with a hint of fruitiness.

Now, before I continue leading myself further down the rabbit hole I’m going to sign this off without expanding and explaining the newest pale kid on the block, the ‘New England IPA’.

For almost 100 years the ‘Pale Ale’ existed as a category of one until the English occupying the new colony of India felt the need for comforts from home including their favourite beers. To ensure these ales arrived unspoiled and ready for consumption the hops and alcohol (both natural preservatives) were ramped up.

BREWERS GUILD 2018

The Brewers Guild of NZ awards were held over the weekend of 15th September and a myriad of medals were handed out to some very deserving brewers and beers. Held every year in Nelson, brewers from all around NZ come together to celebrate the achievements in the growing NZ beer industry, and recognises beer, innovation and achievement and also beer writing. The results are out and we’re going to delve into some of them with you.

Starting with the Trophy for Champion New Zealand Exhibitor, which was awarded to Bach Brewing. A great achievement for this small Auckland based craft brewery. Craig and his team have done a fantastic job over the last year, banging out great beers, not to mention their beautiful packaging. With the recent releases of Beyond the Clouds WCIPA and Velvet Marley Chocolate Cherry Stout for GABs, it’s no wonder they picked up this trophy. Congratulations guys! Massive.

In the weird and wonderful categories, under European Ale, Gold Medals were awarded to; Kereru for their Feijoa Weisse (as well as a Trophy for this category) and Sawmill for their Passionfruit Hibiscus Gose. Both stunning fruit beers that also go great with a sneaky shot of gin. Silver Medals for Kereru Brewing Velvet Boot, and Mcleod’s Brewing Tripel both Belgian style ales. Under the US ale category, a Trophy for Moa for their Southern Alps White IPA. Also picking up a few Gold Medals, Garage Project Yuzukosho and Hop Another notable accomplishment, were our

Well for this beer I stand tall and am proud of our hops. This beer is based on delicious West Coast style IPA's but with a kiwi twist. It has a light malt base that is layered with big American hops (and a few Kiwi hops for good measure). It is big and tropical, piney and all sorts of lovely hoppy flavours). If you want some hop and basketball puns just read the bottle.

ON TAP @ KINGSLAND DEEP CREEK UNDER CURRENT PILSNER AUCKLAND / NEW ZEALAND Point breaks, sunshine, crisp beers on hot days. This easy drinking Pilsner has a calm malt profile, with an undercurrent of lemon zest.

We take its traditional bohemian beginnings and introduce a taste of New Zealand with the addition of local hops, to produce this latest wave in the Deep Creek set. ABV 5.00%

ON TAP @ GREY LYNN SAWMILL BREWING COMPANY PILSNER MATAKANA / NEW ZEALAND Biscuity Pilsner malt and distinctive Motueka and Riwaka hops bringing aromas of lemon and lime. Nelson Sauvin for a tart gooseberry hit. Straw coloured appearance, brilliantly clear, with a long lasting white head. Crisp and bitter. Medium dry finish.

GARAGE PROJECT | ELLERSLIE INSTORE TASTING The Garage Project = Pete Gillespie, Jos Ruffell, and Ian Gillespie. When they started out, they were tiny. Garage Project wasn’t even micro brewing… it was a truly nano brewery.

After nine years of working in breweries with equipment 100 times bigger, it was quite a change to downsize to a fifty-litre brew kit. But what they lacked in size they more than made up for in agility and the ability to experiment.

When you’re brewing on such a small scale you can afford to take risks and that suited them - they wanted to try something new. Over six years have passed and they’ve grown, but that same ethos still shapes how they do things at the Garage. Whether brewing 50 litres or 2000, they’re still here to take some risks, have a bit of fun and to try something new!
