WELCOME TO THE NAKED HOP! A monthly publication coming to you from the Glengarry team of beer experts, where we explore everything beer related. Here you’ll find an in depth look into the beer world and what makes it tick.

For our fourth issue of The Naked Hop we explore the diverse range from international trophy winning Kereru Brewing, invite you in on the journey of Glengarry's Next Top Brewer, educate you on part two of the hop glossary and a finally a poem to sign it all off.

KERERU BREWERY Hailing from Upper Hutt, this small craft beer brewery has really been taking off in the last few years. Independently owned and family operated, Kereru pride themselves on using New Zealand grown Hops and Malts. They also follow extremely strict quality control regimes, allowing the customer to be assured that the utmost care and attention to detail is taken in each batch of beer brewed. They also take every chance they can to follow sustainable practices.

This year taking out the trophy for International small craft brewery of the year at the AIBA awards, it’s easy to see why. I first fell in love with this brewery for their dark beers, it really is their niche. Imperial Nibs (that has its own collection of trophies and medals) is an Imperial Porter infused with Cacao nibs, Coconut and Vanilla. It’s like dessert in a glass. Alongside their dark beers, Kereru also has a portfolio of beers that covers all genres really. From their Big Pigeon Pilsner, right through to the ever growing range of sour beers, they also pride

themselves on their Gluten Free beer available for those that are intolerant of the gluten (and it actually tastes like beer should!).

Kereru’s fantastic range of beers all adorn individual trophies and medals, spanning over many different beer awards and is easy to see why once you try. Not a hoppy beer person? Try the Feijoa Weisse, deliciously tangy and tastes like summer. Up for more of a challenge? Give Night Spirit a try. A barrel aged imperial stout this is not for the faint hearted.

HOP GLOSSARY - PART 2

In part 2 of the Hop Glossary we explore some of the prominent varieties from our own back yard.

Which varieties are New Zealand Hops and what makes them so special anyway? Our hops are known for their fruity, high bitterness punch, but let’s take closer look at some of the superstars of the NZ hop world!

Nelson Sauvin New Zealand brewing’s Mick Jagger. So called Sauvin because it exhibits many of the same gooseberry and grape characteristics as the region’s Sauvignon Blanc. The variety was first released in the year 2000 after being developed by the New Zealand institute for Plant and Food Research. It has medium-high to high alpha acid, and moderately low oil. This hop is often used for both flavour and aroma and is a popular choice for single hop beers.

Motueka This versatile variety comes at you with bursts of citrus and tropical fruit notes. We’re talking lime, lemon, even mojito qualities. Motueka is used on a wide range of beer styles due to its expressiveness, and can be used in any stage of brewing from bittering to dry hopping. This is another great variety for single hop brews. With medium-low alpha acidity and pretty low oil it can bring a lot of flavour without blow-out bitterness.

Pacific Jade Pacific Jade offers a little something different, namely an element of spiciness or a herbal hit as well as a touch of citrus. Another young variety only born in 2004, it gets its herbal quality from its Noble ancestor Saaz. Best used as a bittering or flavour hop. Pacific Jade has quite high alpha acid and moderate oil.

Riwaka Riwaka puts us back on track with the citrus and tropical fruit qualities. This is what people think of when they think of the passionfruit and grapefruit qualities that New Zealand hops promise. Despite its power of flavour it remains on the lower side of the alpha acid scale, with moderate oil. Riwaka is considered an aroma hop, but the fruity flavours it provides makes it a great medium-boil and dry-hopping hop too.
