FROM THE PRESIDENT

In August 2022, I had the great honor to attend the funeral Mass for Fr. Frank Smith and learn more about this special man who was among the first people I met when I joined the MCC family in July 2019. Father and I shared the same hometown area (Philadelphia) and the same college (LaSalle College). We also shared a passion for the importance of Catholic education.

As a pastor, Fr. Frank selflessly served various communities starting diaconate programs, renovating churches, completing affordable housing complexes, and building schools. Always available, he embodied what a true servant leader is.

His life is an inspiration for all of us here at MCC as we work to instill the Franciscan values (generosity, humility, inclusivity, integrity) he lived every day in our students. We are a better school because of Fr. Frank.

The pages that follow give us the opportunity to thank those who so generously support our students and the MCC mission. Every gift makes a difference.

Stewardship exists on many levels, and we are blessed to call so many of you stewards of MCC.

Fr. Frank would approve!

Best wishes,

Having frequent flyer miles and the loan of a car, I was able to accept the gracious invitation of the Class of ’72 to attend the 50th Anniversary of their graduation from Melbourne Central Catholic. I decided to drive from Tampa to Merritt Island and go along the beach route to enjoy the view of the ocean. However, all the hotels, cottages, parks, and stores obscured my vista. I realized almost immediately that from Merritt Island to Melbourne Beach, the coast had been discovered over these 50 years and there was no going back to the tranquility of 1972. This was confirmed when I drove over the causeway and saw Melbourne’s expansion. Little was recognizable, at first, and then more and more became familiar.

I have been in contact over all these years with Fr. Sean (Brett) Duggan, OSB ‘72 and we went together to the Hilton. I hoped and prayed I would recognize the 67–68-year-olds who were 18 when I last saw them but then again, I wondered if they would recognize me who was also 50 years older. It took only a short time to get reacquainted and to remember our time at MCC. The planning committee did an excellent job giving us a key ring with MCC’s logo, decorating the dining room, making all the arrangements, and showing a video of us in times gone by. Seeing pictures of Sisters Marlene, Mary Joan and myself, the only sisters still active currently, was a bit startling. However, the joy and happiness of being together between graduation and the anniversary just melted that feeling away.

I drove to the school for mass on Sunday. As I made a left turn on Florida Ave, I was not sure I was on the right street. Where were the cows? They were replaced by a shopping mall. Where was the one entrance? It was augmented by several gates. Where was the self-contained building? It was increased by other beautiful structures

including sports fields. President Nick Regina gave us a wonderful and thorough tour of the buildings and campus. I was in awe and grateful of all that has happened over the years.

Most of us went to mass at the beautiful serene new chapel. We had a choir, a guitar player and beautiful music. The mass was celebrated by MCC Chaplain Fr. Vince Wirtner and Fr. Sean gave a simple and sincere homily. I was extremely glad to see the Franciscan theme and symbols all over the school that is dedicated to St. Francis and named after the founders of MCC, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, New York.

What more can I say? I left with such gratitude for all the past and present faculty, staff, and students. I was overwhelmed by the growth, the spirit, and the mission of Melbourne Central Catholic and truth to tell for having been there in the early days establishing the foundation on which it has flourished so wonderfully.

I close with the blessing of St. Francis: “May the Lord bless you, may the Lord keep you, may the Lord smile upon you and give you peace.”

Once a Stinger, Always a Stinger

It was August, 1974. Richard Nixon had just become the first U.S. President in history to resign, gas was 53 cents a gallon, and the only classrooms that had air-conditioning at MCC were the portables where Mrs. Ralph taught Spanish, and Mrs. Stewart taught Typing and Journalism. But most importantly, Melbourne Central Catholic High School had no dance and drill team.

The quest to add a dance and drill team at MCC had begun a few years earlier. Local squads such as Satellite High School’s Scorpionettes and Eau Gallie High School’s Deckettes were well known in Brevard County for their fun and innovative routines during football and basketball game half-times. If those schools could have a dance squad, why couldn’t MCC? The administration’s answer was always a variation of “who is going to put it together, and who will be in charge?”

Luckily, not just one person, but two came through. The girls’ P.E. teacher, Miss Ivey (who later became Mrs. Washburn), and MCC’s beloved librarian, Sr. Rita Sheridan, volunteered to take on the job together. Word spread quickly around campus and on a hot humid September afternoon, the first MCC Dance and Drill Team tryouts were held in the gym. Every girl who came to the tryouts made the squad. The only requirements were a love of dance, a willingness to put ourselves out there, and a mother or other relative who could sew together a uniform.

Once we had a squad, the next decision was a name.

Believe it or not, we almost became the Hustlerettes, although I’m sure Sr. Rita would have had a thing or two to say about that! But in a unanimous 12-0 vote, we chose to become the Stingers, a perfect squad name to complement our mascot, the Fighting Bee.

The next decision was voting for officers. Lorraine Kelly Totty, an original squad member, recalls that we went into a classroom and sat behind a desk. Each girl put her

head down while Miss Ivey called out names and we raised our hands to vote. Our first captain was Anne Chocolaad, and our co-captain was Sue McWilliams.

The next order of business was uniforms. The first Stinger uniform was a simple sleeveless shiny gold one-piece short dress made with satin material donated by Mr. Perno, a member of the MCC staff, whose son Frank graduated in the class of ’77. We ordered white boots and long white gloves and we were ready to learn our first routine.

Because we came together in that Fall semester of ’74, it was too late to do much that football season, but we had a goal to give our inaugural performance at the last home football game. We decided to dance to the Fifth Dimension’s “Up, Up and Away” and because the song mentions going “up, up and away in my beautiful balloon” we thought, why not use real balloons as props? Yes, we thought big even back then! Each girl was going to dance with a helium balloon in her hand and at the end of the song, we would let our balloon go up into the night sky.

The only problem with the balloons was that it too windy outside to both dance and hold a balloon. I’ll be honest, no one I asked could remember what happened to those balloons. What I do remember about that first performance was that the music cranking through the P.A. system was too scratchy to hear and that we found out the hard way white boots and green football turf do NOT mix well. Nevertheless, we were determined to make it work.

With basketball season quickly approaching, we knew we needed another routine. This time we decided to dance to the theme song from the movie, “The Sting”. The Deckettes from Eau Gallie High School were kind enough to give us a crash course in dance and drill routines. They taught us their routine to “Hey, Look Me Over” and we used some of those steps to choreograph our own signature performance, adding in of course, the high kick sequence that was to become the highlight of every Stinger routine. The audience loved it. And we were hooked!

By the summer of ’76, the Stingers had grown to 20 members and were now a staple at MCC football and basketball games. Cecelia DuPont and I were co-captains. Going into our senior year of high school we wanted to make a splash with the “fancy” tuxedo uniforms

2000-01
Maria

that other dance squads wore. The problem was that those uniforms were pricey.

Luck was once again on the Stingers’ side. My mother knew of a seamstress who agreed to sew our uniforms at a highly reduced rate. We bought green fabric at a bulk discount and still had leftover yellow satin from the roll Mr. Perno had donated two years earlier. I remember the uniforms, which consisted of a tuxedo jacket, a white dickie, and shorts with suspenders, cost a total of $20 per girl (that included material and labor). Those uniforms, which we wore to the first home football game that year, were handed down to new generations of Stingers for a long time afterward.

Another exciting thing that happened in the ‘76-’77 year, is the Stingers’ first foray into the world of high school dance competition. We spent a weekend in Fort Lauderdale and competed against other high school teams. We came away with 2 first place trophies- one for Best Dance Routine, “Live and Let Die” and Best Dance Routine with a Prop “I Got Your Number” (we danced on a chair!).

Then, that summer, things took a turn. Sr. Rita and Mrs. Washburn could no longer put in the hours required to moderate the squad and the Stingers were in danger of being disbanded. That’s when the Stingers really got lucky with Sandra Bodfish.

Mrs. B. (as she is affectionately called by Stinger alumni) recalls, “Sally Rowlette’s mom called me to discuss my dance background and asked if I would consider taking on the job as moderator. I had seen these young ladies perform at games and was always impressed. They were used to looking after themselves, including providing their own costumes, choreography, and competitions. Fr. Paul Henry then made the call, and who could say no to the MCC principal and priest?”

Once Mrs. B. had charge of the squad, things progressed quickly. She took the Stingers to their first one-day workshop in Tampa where they learned new techniques and choreography. The Stingers competed with high school teams all over the state of Florida winning 6 Florida State championships. They also competed in Texas and California and earned 3 National Titles. Other highlights include being invited to perform at the ’86 World’s Fair in Vancouver BC, Canada.

When asked about her favorite Stinger memory, Mrs. B. responded, “When Walt Disney World chose Stingers to perform at many special performances. They would transport us in fancy buses from MCC to Disney for practices and performances. They would bring huge costume vans to the MCC gym to outfit Stingers, and send professional choreographers to teach them routines that they would perform with the ‘Disney dancers’ and many celebrities.”

Mrs. B. fondly recalls all the extras that went into making a performance special. “Over the years we added some male students to competition routines, we created back drops and props, and my favorite combination routines that included jazz, ballet, pom-poms, costumes and of course high kick. We were always famous for our precision high kick routines.”

None of this, she notes, could have happened without the support of family, fundraisers, and the many alumni who have played a huge role in the growth of the Stingers. “They joined our many trips as chaperones, advisors, try-out judges, and supporters.”

Like Mrs. B., who says she will forever love the many friendships she made along the way, the Stingers hold a special place in my heart. The friendships, laughter, struggles, and the many life lessons learned, helped shape me into the woman I am today.

Like so many other Stingers after me, I was blessed to dance next to my sister, Carmen Palacios Dick, class of ’79 (who has finally forgiven me for giving her that demerit when she talked too much at practice), and other lifelong friends like the Jané sisters (Miriam, Lourdes, and Tessie—all 3 Stingers!). Stingers are sisters, best-friends and some are even mother-daughter. But we all have one thing in common. We love to dance. And we love MCC. Go Hustlers!

Note: I would like to thank Sandra Bodfish for contributing to this article and Lorraine Kelly Totty for her excellent memory. Any inaccuracies are mine alone.

MCC CLASS OF 1972 Cheers to 50 Years

for most of mcc’s class of 1972, the idea that 50 years had passed was almost unthinkable. Getting back together on September 9th, MCC’s Homecoming Weekend was a walk down memory lane. About a dozen of us met up in the gym annex/ multipurpose room, a space that did not even exist in 1972. We marveled how students now have a temperature controlled, spacious facility for assembly, gatherings or to eat lunch right outside of the gymnasium. What a blessing that must be on a hot rainy Florida day! Excited to be here and eager to take in the school tour, we greeted our host, President Nick Regina and got ready to see the MCC of today. As we were walking the same halls as we did back in 1972, we noticed many changes. “Oh, look, the lockers are no longer here,” Cindy Silvestre pointed out as we passed the gym and entered the Building 2 corridor. We were told each student has their own Chromebook and all assignments are digital. A new chapel, the Sullivan Campus Ministry greeted us, a place for worship and reflection that, back in our day, was just a grass area near the (then) school office. In Building 1, the room where we took Typing 1 & 2 now houses a Fine Arts Center. A new “Aquinas Hall” has an amazing science lab and video conference center. Clearly MCC has moved full force into the 21st century.

When we decided to form a reunion committee, we had to look no further than the Lucerna, our 1972 yearbook. Many of our contemporaries are now retired but a surprising number are still (or back) living in the area. Approximately 60% of 1972 graduates currently reside somewhere in the state of Florida. Margaret Davis (voted Most School Spirited) returned to Melbourne over 20 years ago.

Now retired, she worked in hospice for the majority of her adult life. She was an obvious choice to ask to be a reunion team member. Other alumni living close by and rounding out the team included, Rose McCarthy Lansdon, Sue Rauch, Mary Armstrong Maxwell, and me. When responses to our outreach efforts started returning, we had a few surprises. Fr. Sean (Brett) Duggan, OSB ‘72 was one of the first to respond. He wanted to know if he should invite Sister Margaret Mary Kimmins OSF, former school guidance counselor at MCC. Naturally, the answer was yes, and she came as our honored guest. As more classmates started returning reservations, everybody wanted to know “who’s, who” to be in attendance. Of course, we used this as an opportunity to let our former classmates know who had not yet returned their reservation and asked them to reach out by phone, social media, or email to encourage them to RSVP. In the end, we had 35 in attendance for our alumni dinner (class size was 72 in ‘72) which was held at Hilton Melbourne Beach Oceanfront. Old acquaintances were renewed, stories were told. We caught up on each other’s families, careers, retirement plans, losses, and blessings. The evening was capped off by filing onto the beach to view a picture-perfect launch from Kennedy Space Center at 9:22 pm. That launch brought us back to memories of a time when as children we used to regularly file out of our classrooms to watch the NASA launches. Those were the days that brought America into the space age and made Brevard County an unforgettable place to live.

On behalf of the MCC Council of Advisors, I want to thank all of our benefactors for your extraordinary generosity. You have helped us advance the mission! Know that your support of the MCC Fund benefited every MCC student in the past year.

Our work as a Council is both invigorating and challenging. Our committees are working tirelessly, examining every facet of MCC in 2022-23. I thought I’d share some of the committee recommendations and tasks with you.

Advancement

MCC continues to develop and cultivate relationships with our Catholic partner schools while at the same time designing strategies to enroll more students not currently in a Catholic partner school.

Facility

MCC considers the future of St. Clare Hall, the last remaining modular building on campus.

Finance

Work is nearly complete on the 2023-24 budget.

Membership

The Committee is working to identify new Council members and has created a year-end Council evaluation to help the group move forward.

We look forward to the challenges that the rest of the 2022-23 school year will bring. Again, thank you for all you do to make MCC the great school that it is.

INVEST IN MCC

Charitable support to Melbourne Central Catholic High School enhances the many programs, equipment and facilities on campus. The generosity of alumni, parents, grandparents and friends helps Melbourne Central Catholic High School provide a quality Catholic education to a diverse group of young men and women each year. There are many ways to invest in Melbourne Central Catholic High School. These methods of giving fit into two categories-Current Gifts and Deferred (Planned) Gifts.

Gifts for Current Programs

Types

• A Gift of Cash most often in the form of a personal check payable to Melbourne Central Catholic High School (or gifts made via MasterCard, Visa or Discover).

• Mandatory retirement account distributions

• A Gift of Stock may be transferred to Melbourne Central Catholic High School avoiding any capital gains tax.

• A Matching Gift from a corporation. Several hundred U.S. companies participate in this program.

Gift Restrictions

Although many investors choose to allow the school to use their gifts where they are most needed, we fund several special programs and projects through restricted gifts each year. These include gifts for enhanced equipment, programs and facilities.

The MCC Fund

Gifts help us meet the critical needs of families requesting tuition assistance and impact all aspects of school operations.

We receive gifts on every business day of the year. Any member of the MCC family may make a gift or pledge at any time during the year (in our annual report we will acknowledge gifts made during each fiscal year, July 1 –June 30). It is important to note that there is no official “kick-off” for MCC Fund gifts.

Gifts Planned for the future Bequests

This is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming Melbourne Central Catholic High School as beneficiary. It can reduce estate taxes.

Charitable Gift Annuity

This gift allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. Melbourne Central Catholic High School requires a minimum gift of $5,000 to establish this gift.

Life Insurance

If Melbourne Central Catholic High School is named as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the policy premiums become eligible as a tax-deductible gift.

For information on ways that you can support Melbourne Central Catholic High School, please contact the Advancement Office advancement@melbournecc.org or 321.727.0793 Ext. 113.

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

THE MCC FUND involves, informs, and bonds graduates, current parents, grandparents, alumni parents, and friends of Melbourne Central Catholic High School; gifts help the staff provide a top-notch education for students by supporting every aspect of school operations. “MCC holds a population of amazing people who seek what is best for one another. Throughout my four years at MCC, I have come across faculty, staff, and students who have changed my life for the better. I have learned skills that I will carry with me for a lifetime. Being able to visit Jesus daily in the school chapel allowed me to grow closer to Christ. This closeness to God that is consistently present throughout campus allows students to form a tight-knit community and take the peace they receive from the readily available sacraments and share it with their friends and family. MCC not only strives for this spiritual integrity, but also promotes academic excellence, forming each student into a well rounded individual who is prepared to shine his or her positive, bright light on the world.” - MEGAN HAIRE ‘22
