Welcome to MCC, 2024-25. We opened the year with 454 students, an increase of 31 students from last year. Interest in joining the Hustler family remains high!
Summer was busy as we completed several projects including renovating the weight room in the Erdman Field House (thanks to the Bonenberger and Erdman families and attendees at last year’s Green and Gold Gala for making this happen).
We also renovated the rest rooms in St. Elizabeth Hall (the E Building for you MCC veterans), allowing us to use them for the first time in several years.
In July, we welcomed Ed Henry back to MCC as our new Principal. He began his career as a teacher at Ascension Catholic School in Melbourne, then came to MCC to teach history and be Athletic Director before going to St. Joseph in Palm Bay as Principal in 2021. Ed brings with him a wealth of experience, a steadfast commitment to Catholic education, and a vision for empowering students to excel academically, spiritually, and morally.
Also new this year, we are partnering with Praelio Armed Security to add a School Security Officer (SSO) to our staff. Officer Sean Heibel joined us in August bringing with him a wealth of experience and dedication as he works with us to ensure the physical safety of our students, staff, and visitors.
Academically, our students continue to flourish. Sixteen students earned AP Scholar with Distinction designation, nine earned AP Scholar with Honor designation, and twenty earned AP Scholar Designation.
This issue of Connect gives us the opportunity to not only profile MCC graduates and update the MCC family on school happenings, but also to say thank you to the many MCC community members who supported us by investing in our mission by supporting the 2023-24 MCC Fund.
We remain grateful for your commitment and support.
Best,
Nick Regina President

HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
An integral part of the Brevard County community, Melbourne Central Catholic High School embraces its mission to educate our students academically, spiritually, and socially, preparing them well for college and beyond.
We congratulate our members of the Class of 2024, each of whom will continue his or her education at colleges and universities both in and out of Florida.
Their work in the classroom, in community service, or on the athletic field is a testament to the value they place on the Franciscan Virtues –Generosity, Humility, Inclusivity, and Integrity – we hold so close.
MCC's first cornerstone.
The young priest didn’t know the impact he would have on Catholic education in Brevard County as he rode the train on weekends in 1957 from Miami to Melbourne to hear confessions and say Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.
“It was a different time,” Fr. Peter Dolan remembered. “I loved teaching Latin at Archbishop Curley High School (Miami), but I also knew that I had a responsibility as a priest to help where I was asked to help.”
Flash forward to 1961 when Brevard County was undergoing a significant transformation due to the growth of the space industry. This growth included a substantial number of Catholic families who sought a quality education for their children. The Church needed to create a next step for both those families moving to Brevard County and those families who had children at local Catholic elementary schools.
Dolan’s weekend trips would ultimately lead to August 10, 1961, when the Bishop of the St. Augustine
Diocese (Archbishop Hurley) appointed him President of the newly formed Central Catholic High School and let him know the school would open in September!
“I took that as a challenge,” Dolan said. “I contacted Jerry Cooper at the Brevard Engineering College (now Florida Tech) and secured two classrooms to rent at the Melbourne airport. Fortunately, we found a qualified teacher, Barbara Lagasse, and the two of us opened the school with 40 students in September.”
Under Dolan’s leadership and guidance, growth came quickly to the school. The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany arrived in the fall of 1962. Mother Marguerite O’Connell took over as Principal.
“Mother Marguerite was an exceptional leader,” Dolan remembered. “Most people don’t know she was the first woman to earn an education leadership doctorate from Notre Dame University. The Sisters were fantastic; they really drove us to be a great school.”
With the Sisters managing the day to day of the school, Fr. Dolan focused his efforts on getting the school’s athletic program going, providing transportation, and serving as parish administrator at both Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and the newly formed St. Joseph Parish. He noted, “I got into the banking business when for the first time I borrowed money from the bank on Babcock Street to purchase football equipment!”
In addition to Miami, Fr. Dolan’s road to MCC included stops in St. Petersburg (Bishop Barry High School for Boys, now St. Petersburg Catholic High School), Tallahassee (served two universities, two hospitals, two missions, and a correctional facility), and Orlando (Bishop Moore Catholic High School).
It was in Tallahassee where Fr. Dolan met Tom Nugent, the head football coach at Florida State University.
“He was a great Catholic and a great friend who took his team to Mass every Saturday,” Dolan remembered. “I got to know Tom and his family very well.”
Nugent eventually left Tallahassee for the University of Maryland and Dolan moved on to Miami. The friends stayed in touch and Dolan traveled to Maryland to attend a football game. While there, he learned that the Terrapins referred to their offense as the Hustlers.
A school nickname was born!
“I didn’t know the connotation of the word,” Dolan recounted. “I’m amazed it has lasted so long!
MCC will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m proud of the work that we did to get the school started and prouder of the wonderful school it is today.”
A visionary, a builder, a priest’s priest, Fr. Dolan celebrates his 70th Jubilee this fall.
Fr. Dolan supervises the groundbreaking for MCC's first building.
Construction is underway!
How did you go from an MCC graduate to your field?
Ryan Caudill ’97 attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps as a dentist with the goal of becoming an orthodontist. After squeezing his bachelor’s degree into three years and graduating with highest honors, he started dental school at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. He married MCC classmate Meredith Vouglas during his 4th year as a dental student. The week of their wedding, Ryan found out they would be moving to Indianapolis for a two-year residency, a certificate in orthodontics, and a master’s degree in dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry.
Ryan finished dental school graduating summa cum laude and was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society. Ryan and Meredith's time in Indianapolis went by quickly and they were anxious to move back to Brevard County for Ryan to start practicing orthodontics in his dad's orthodontic practice in Merritt Island and part-time at a second practice in Suntree with Dr. Donald Ray. After two years, Ryan purchased both orthodontic practices and merged the offices into Caudill Orthodontics where he spent eight years as a solo owner and practitioner running both offices.
During this time, Meredith and Ryan had two children, Ryleigh (15) and Elliot (13). He also began lecturing at various continuing education events through Align Technology, the parent company of Invisalign. Treating patients with Invisalign is a passion and he was honored to be recognized as a key opinion leader and expert Invisalign practitioner. In 2014, after one of Ryan’s lectures, first-year orthodontic resident, Dr. Angela McNeight ’04, approached him after learning his practice was in Melbourne. They soon discovered their education paths both included MCC. Ryan's business had been growing and in 2016, he decided it was time to find
another orthodontist. With Angie finishing orthodontic residency, they decided a professional business partnership might be a perfect fit.
Born and raised by (dad Rick and mom Teresa’76) in Indian Harbour Beach, Angie followed a similar professional career path to Ryan that started with balancing academics and athletics at MCC. Angie captained both her volleyball and tennis teams as well as served as Student Council President. After graduation, she attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she served as the president of her sorority, studied abroad in Australia, and double majored in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology and General Biology while also minoring in Spanish. After college, she worked for a year as a traveling leadership consultant for her sorority visiting over 30 universities across North America and Canada. Next, she graduated cum laude from the University of Florida College of Dentistry where she received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree and was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society. She served as her class representative for all four years of dental school, was a member of the dental school admissions committee, and traveled to both Guatemala and the Dominican Republic for dental mission trips to help those in need. She then completed a three-year orthodontic residency program and Master of Science (M.S.) degree at the University of Florida College of Dentistry School of Advanced Dental Sciences.
In 2018 after a two-year associateship, Ryan and Angie decided partnership was the right business move resulting in Caudill Orthodontics becoming Caudill and McNeight Orthodontics. That same year, they built a state-of-the-art building in Viera, a location that quickly became their busiest office. In 2023, Drs. Caudill and McNeight hired a third orthodontist, Dr. Kalynn Naglieri, to support their practice and further growth.
Ryan and Angie both feel owning their own practice is one the most challenging yet rewarding parts of their career choices. It provides them a tremendous amount of autonomy to make their own decisions yet juggling both patient care and running a successful business can be very time consuming. They have found that the nearly 30 people employed by Caudill and McNeight Orthodontics all have their strengths and areas of improvement. Their goal has always been to hire good people that share their practice vision, then recognize and highlight their strengths. This keeps a smile on the team members at Caudill and McNeight Orthodontics because they find their jobs fulfilling and rewarding.
Our advice to our former 17-year-old selves would be to always set goals. Set yourself up with both short- and long-term goals. Short-term goals may be something as simple as studying for an hour for your next math test or could be long-term like getting into a graduate program to set the path for your career. Setting short term goals that are achievable eventually allow your long-term goals to be attainable. Don’t forget to celebrate your successes along the way and immediately set a new goal in place to stay motivated. We would also encourage students to keep an open mind in their search for their careers. Both of us were interested in the medical field originally but eventually found our paths to orthodontics and love every moment about what we do!
"Staying motivated and continuing to improve our skills year after year is essential because the orthodontic field is advancing incredibly rapidly."

Please congratulate and pray for our Alumna Anna who has been discerning a call to Consecrated Religious Life. Please see her letter below to our MCC Community:
"It’s a great joy to share with you that beginning August 7th, I will be a postulant with the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament! The journey to this next step in my life began at Holy Name of Jesus and grew during my time as a student at Melbourne Central Catholic. Going to Mass with my family, being a student at the school, and participating in youth ministry programs were all moments where I was able to come to know Jesus and His love more deeply.
ABIGAIL HARNDEN '18 recently became engaged to Matthew Ryan. Abigail coordinates luxury resort public relations for The Mayfield Group.
My relationship with Jesus continued to grow during college, where I also first encountered the Mercedarian Sisters. I will be moving to our formation house convent in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to continue my discernment with the sisters. I will be taking classes, growing in prayer, and immersing myself in the life of a Mercedarian Sister. We are present on our website and social media so you can get a glimpse into our days and various ministries! Please see @mercedariansisters and www.mercedariansisters.org. I would like to ask for your prayers during this transition for me and for my family. While this is an exciting and beautiful time, there have been, and will continue to be, many sacrifices for them as well. Know of my prayers and gratitude for each of you."

I am with my family
My first year as head coach The Diocese of Orlando sent me to Bishop Moore High School and Lou Holtz was a guest speaker. I was so excited because I am a huge college football fan.
His advice as a coach resonated with meHe had 3 simple rules
1- Do what’s right.
2- Do the best you can.
3-Show people you care.
Marrying my husband Chris. Fun fact - I met my husband at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale and he took me to the homecoming dance my sophomore year.
I enjoy watching the girls mature before my eyes. When they first come in as freshman they are often so shy and timid; then they transition into young ladies that have personal responsibility and they advocate for themselves. It’s a true joy to watch.

"T hose we hold closest to our hearts never truly leave us. They live on in the kindness they have shared and the love they brought into our lives."
"In High School what was or is the one thing you could not live without and why?"
First, a Bermuda bag. These were small purses with fabric button-on covers that you could change to match your outfit. Straight from the preppy handbook! Small enough to carry around, but big enough for the necessities.
Also, shout out to Flashdance and legwarmers. I grew up in Pennsylvania, so these were a welcome necessity in my always cold, large public school.
Of course, it was all about 80's fashion!

I could not live without my bell-bottom Mudd jeans. The bell-bottoms were wide enough at the bottom that it would engulf the entire platform shoe. Second would be my anti-skip CD Walkman (which was a misnomer).

Something I can’t live without in high school is my friends. They support me, and make school more enjoyable and fun.

The one thing I couldn’t live without is my faith because times get difficult in high school and it helps to just let Jesus take the wheel.

Sports team I cheered for growing up:
My early years were spent cheering for teams that my cousins and uncles rooted for in Pennsylvania. Teams from Philly and Pittsburgh and Penn State. There was more player/ team loyalty back then.

The best pregame music is the positive lyrics in your own mind. Or Springsteen. Truly the best music is the national anthem because you get to play the game at the end of the song.
favorite sports team:
Team Hustlers all the way. I do have a rooting interest in Penn State athletics, Vandy and Evansville baseball and the Cubs. I find myself cheering for individual athletes with high character that I can use as role models for our players.
the people i most admire:
I have a mount rushmore of friends that I hold in high regard. My main trinity is formed by my high school coach Howard May, the inspiring saint of a woman that is my mother, and my smart, funny, and loving wife Lesi.
greatest fear:
Far too many to mention
a talent i would like to possess:
My toolbox of talents is limited, very limited. I look at it more of my interests than talents. I would want the talent to be a sports journalist at a major newspaper, write for a tv show, work with animals, and continue to grow my craft in regard to leadership and culture. Those last 2 have a shelf life and a need to be continually updated.
best coaching advice i have received:
Personally I believe that advice/words can at times be overrated. I seek out great mentors to study and emulate. There are times when I observe actions over advice.
i'm happiest when:
I get to share moments with people I admire such as my players (former and current), friends and Lesli.
proudest achievement:
My relationship with my wife and my ongoing life at and love of MCC.
We renovated and completed several projects in preparation for the 2024-25 school year. These included:
Renovating both the men’s and women’s second level bathrooms in St. Elizabeth Hall (E Building for our graduates).
We updated the Erdman Fieldhouse Weight Room this summer! MCC families generously donated to ensure the weight room is fully functional to support our Hustler athletes and programs. Updates included new weight equipment, mirrors, mats, and platforms.
We also air conditioned both the boys and girls locker rooms.
Fixing concrete and power washing sidewalks throughout campus.
Painting the exterior of several classroom buildings.
Completing the exterior fence on the northside of the Erdman Field House.
Congratulations to Varsity Softball and Varsity Baseball for winning District
Championships this past spring! Way to go Hustlers!
Huge round of applause to Justin Woulard'25 for defending his title as the 1A long jump State Champion. Justin also impressed with a 2nd place finish in the 100m dash, 4th in 200m dash and 6th in the triple jump.
Big shoutout to Jahkya Miller '25 for a stellar 4th place finish in the 400 hurdles.
Congratulations to Daniel Arrubla and Michael Green for qualifying for the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program! Among 50,000 high performers, they've shown outstanding academic potential. Look out for their recognition as Semifinalists or Commended Students this fall!
In AP Chemistry class, Dr. Murmer holds up an Erlenmeyer flask where the three states of matter exist simultaneously.
After 30 incredible years of inspiring MCC students, Mrs. Herschbach retired following the 2023-24 school year. We congratulate her on a remarkable career and wish her the very best in her next chapter!
MCC prepares students for life after high school by hosting visiting college representatives from throughout the country.
MCC is pleased to partner with Praelio Armed Security to add a School Security Officer (SSO) to our staff this year. Officer Sean Heibel joins MCC with a wealth of experience and dedication as he works with us to ensure the physical safety of our students, staff and visitors. Officer Heibel served as a Specialist in the US Army followed by 13 years as a Police Patrolman at Edinboro University.
This summer our Baseball team volunteered to help mulch areas on campus!
Coach Harnden and some Cheer team members volunteered at the golf tournament benefiting Genesis House. Together, they made a positive impact and supported those in need!

Greetings Hustlers,
As we gather to reflect on the past year, I am honored to share this moment with you, guided by the enduring charism of St. Francis of Assisi. His life and teachings continue to inspire our journey, reminding us of the virtues that underpin our mission: humility, integrity, generosity, and inclusivity.
It has been a year of remarkable achievements, growth, and resilience for our beloved MCC. Our continued success is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our staff, the support of our donors, and the enthusiasm of our alumni network. Your support and involvement are the bedrock of our success, and I encourage you to stay engaged and continue to “Connect” with our vibrant community.
Thank you for your ongoing dedication and enthusiasm. Together we are shaping a brighter future and making a meaningful difference.
