THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME … AND THAT’S A GOOD THING AT MCC
Advertisement
When I look back at my years at MCC, I have warm memories of teachers, friends, and activities: Stingers, Student Council, Homecomings, Proms and then Graduation, in 1997. Although four years flew by, the memories remain ... so etched in my mind and more importantly, in my heart. Mass, Pep Rallies, Spirit Week, Friday Night Lights, Basketball Games and attending Swim Meets were all part of my experience at MCC, but it is the little things that stand out the most when I reflect as an alumna and parent of two legacies, Hunter Davidson (2021) and Emma Davidson (2024). Of course, there were other outstanding teachers at MCC when I attended for whom I am grateful, but the ones who remain are reminders of the traditions and the feeling of “being home” that I experienced when I enrolled my children at MCC. Walking on campus, today, is both nostalgic and exhilarating. The things that have changed show growth and improvement and the things that remain unchanged are MCC’s spirit and genuine caring environment. Gone is the un-air-conditioned, “breezeway” where we had our lunch. Gone is the small computer room where we had dial up for the World Wide Web and were taught keyboarding. Gone are the days when our cellphones, if we had them, were simply phones and the smartest device we possessed was our beloved TI-81 calculator. New is the DREAM Lab, Sullivan Campus Ministry Center, new track and field and blessedly, new bleachers. These improvements in technology and facilities make the school even more competitive and allow students to realize their full potential in today’s technological world. MCC has as part of its mission statement the following: “Embracing the core values of faith, moral integrity, academic excellence, mutual respect, self-discipline and a commitment to service in order to achieve personal goals now and in the future …encourage leadership, active learning, critical thinking, and technological skills so that students can realize their full potential.” Certainly, over the last 20 years, some of the facilities have improved at MCC, and my children benefit from the improvement, but the core mission of preparing students to realize their potential and become caring leaders in a complex world remains
steadfast. After my graduation, I attended Rollins College and became an elementary school teacher. My son, Hunter, graduated from MCC in 2021 and attends Flagler College and is on their basketball team. Coach Roberts couldn’t be more excited. My daughter, Emma, is a sophomore and is on the cheerleading team, and a Gold and Green Ambassador. As a parent, I could not be happier than to see my children TAM DAVIDSON happy, learning, thriving and
CLASS OF ‘97 feeling whole. MCC is not just a school, it is a community to which every student, parent, faculty member and staff belongs. It was and is a faith-based family. The inner peace that one experiences at MCC is an intrinsic part of its core value system. I see that peace on my children’s faces each day, and although I might not have realized it when I attended, I know that MCC’s goals are successful. I also know that the real legacy is the unwavering mission of MCC.
They might have seemed like small things at the time, but …
The teachers always made extra time for questions and extra help: they still do.
Each and every student was important to Mr. Herrington, and he made sure everyone was not only successful but also was thriving: he still does.
Mr. Dooley was a great coach: he remains a constant, through his example.
Mrs. Zinone had the ability to reach all of her students: she continues to do so, today.
Mrs. Herschbach taught English with a passion for perfection: she continues to inspire.
Mr. Kelly taught us that history repeats itself: his dedication is proof of his theory.
ALUMNI PROFILE
Courtney Sidereal (Evans) would not be where she is today without Melbourne Central Catholic High School and the incredible community there. After MCC, Courtney continued on to study at Cornell University and Harvard University and enjoyed a successful career at Columbia University and PricewaterhouseCoopers. MCC made it all possible. “My years at MCC set me on such a positive trajectory,” she says. Academically, Courtney always enjoyed school but was challenged to reach new heights at MCC. Courtney’s teachers instilled in her a love of learning and pushed her not just to memorize information to pass a test, but to comprehend the material thoroughly and develop an intellectual curiosity. “I’ll never forget the moment I got the grade back for my first essay in Mrs. Herschbach’s AP English Language class. Suffice it to say, I did not get the grade I was expecting! I went to talk to Mrs. Herschbach about the grade, hoping it was some sort of mistake. However, instead of correcting it, Mrs. Herschbach challenged me to be better. We spent the better part of an hour discussing my essay and how to improve the next one. My essay was wellwritten, but my analysis hadn’t been deep enough, and while it might have gotten me an A in the past, it was not worthy of an A in her class. After that, I worked harder than I had ever before in an English class and proudly earned an A at the end of the semester.” Having teachers like Mrs. Herschbach who cared about her, saw her potential, and took the time to work with her not only made her better, but inspired her to help others in the same way, as she does now through her SAT/ACT tutoring business. Courtney was also given the opportunity to develop leadership skills at MCC, where she served as President of the National Honor Society. Through her role in NHS, Courtney developed a love of public speaking that stayed with her through college and beyond. These public speaking skills would serve Courtney well in her career as an admissions counselor at Columbia University and later in her career at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “I credit so much of my love of public speaking to MCC,” she says, “the experience I got to hone this skillset set me up for success when I found myself addressing large groups of people during college fairs and while on stage at corporate events.” Courtney’s experience at MCC would be incomplete without mentioning basketball. “I remember going to MCC women’s basketball games in middle school, watching players like Jen Musgrove and Leigh Pauley dominate the court, and thinking I wanted to be like them one day. At the beginning of my freshman year, I couldn’t wait for tryouts and was thrilled when I made the team.” Courtney has such fond memories of early morning practices, summer open gyms, and game days. Coach Candee Terry and all the assistant coaches helped Courtney grow, not just as a player, but as a person with a deep appreciation for teamwork. After MCC, Courtney would go on to study English (thank you, Mrs. Herschbach!) at Cornell University (‘11) where she was selected to be a Meinig Family Cornell National Scholar. After graduating cum laude, Courtney took a gap year to attend Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa, Canada. “I’ve always loved cooking, and I knew I would never regret the experience of studying the culinary arts in a more formal setting. During my time at Le Cordon Bleu, I met students and chefs from many different countries, and in addition to developing culinary skills, I gained a wider appreciation for
the diversity and richness of the word.” After Le Cordon Bleu, Courtney attended Harvard University (‘13), where she earned a Master’s in Education. Upon graduation, Courtney began working as an admissions counselor for Columbia University. “I had been so fortunate to have incredible guidance counselors at MCC who supported my college admissions process, and during my time in admissions, I gained new appreciation for the guidance I received at MCC.” COURTNEY EVANS SIDEREAL Courtney continued her career outside CLASS OF ‘07 of academia at several corporations in Manhattan, culminating at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where she served as a manager in Communications. In this role, Courtney oversaw Communications operations, supported the merging of two internal departments, and built an onboarding and continuing education program for her team. Now, Courtney lives in Westchester County, New York with her husband and one-year-old son. She has founded her own college application prep and SAT/ ACT tutoring business, where she counsels and teaches students (many from MCC!) to help them achieve their goals (www. courtneyevanstutoring.com). “Working with students is my passion, and it means so much to me to be supporting students from my own high school. MCC gave me so much as a student, and it is an honor using my knowledge and experience to give back to this incredible community.”
WELCOME HOME, ALUMNI!
On Friday, October 8, MCC fans—students, alumni, faculty, families, and friends—gathered for a long-awaited Homecoming, the first athletic and social event of its kind on campus since September 2019.
Storms may have delayed the start of the evening festivities but it couldn’t put a damper on the excitement for the football game and introduction of the Homecoming Court. Special thanks to 1997 Homecoming Queen Tam Shaw Davidson for doing the honors of crowning our King Aidan O’Neill and Queen Christina Cabrera.
Thank you to all who joined us for this celebration of our Hustler pride!

ONCE A HUSTLER, ALWAYS A HUSTLER
By Roxanne Lestrange ‘93
Have you ever had an experience where you randomly connected with another MCC graduate? Maybe it was during a job interview, or in the grocery store. Maybe you were classmates, maybe you recognize one another, or maybe MCC comes up and you make a connection. These connections quickly remind us that “Once a Hustler, Always a Hustler.” This is my story about how two MCC graduates, one living in Melbourne and the other in Monticello, Florida, randomly connected in Gainesville.
The University of Florida accepted my daughter and MCC class of 2021 graduate as part of their Summer B program. It was an exciting time as I prepared to send her off to college and had the security of knowing she would be rooming with a soccer teammate from her many years of club soccer. The fall was not as certain as my daughter decided to go with a random roommate to broaden her horizons and fully embrace the college experience.
Enter Facebook. Upon completing summer term, my daughter had the opportunity to move her belongings into her dorm for the fall semester. The parent Facebook group was blowing up with questions about specific dorms and floor layouts, the amount of space etc. One post referenced the dorm my daughter was moving into for fall. I quickly responded, sharing what we had experienced during our drop off between semesters. As often happens, one parent and I began to dialog and then I randomly received a message from another parent. She messaged me privately to say she wasn’t sure I would remember her but she was an MCC graduate, Class of 1996 and had been a Stinger for one year. She also shared her maiden name. I am a 1993 graduate and quickly remembered who she was from the summers I spent helping at Stinger Camp after graduation. We immediately began talking about our daughters, what they were studying, where they went to high school and where they were living. Turns out our daughters were living on the same floor two doors down from one another. We both encouraged our daughters to reach out to each other via social media…. but let’s be honest, who wants to listen to their mom when it comes to making friends?
Move in day arrived and I made a point to introduce myself and my daughter to her daughter and family. Our daughters quickly formed a friendship and have now become inseparable. Tracie and I are proud Hustlers, proud Gators and proud Gator parents.
The bonds created from a shared experience at MCC have created a brand new friendship between old Hustlers and a new friendship for two college students. Once a Hustler, Always a Hustler!
APRIL 6, 1973…FOREVER
BY LARRY ’73 AND MARY PAT EASON ’74 LASKOWSKI
The date was March 7, 1955, when Len and Helen McCabe Laskowski welcomed their third of 10 children into this world. One year and eight days later, Tim and Mary Campo Eason welcomed their third of four children. The locations were 1,200 miles apart, but 15 years later, MCC would be the meeting place of Mary Pat Eason and Larry Laskowski. The year age difference was initially significant as Larry had been at MCC for a year before Mary Pat arrived in the fall of 1970. The actual moment when the “spark was lit” is a bit uncertain. Their best remembrance is the Valentine’s Dance in 1971. High school commitments to academics, athletics, activities, clubs, and jobs kept them both extremely busy. As a result, steady dating took a back seat until Prom 1972. After the prom, dating became more frequent. It would be safe to say the two became “an item” during Larry’s senior and Mary Pat’s junior year.
The 1972-73 school year was loaded with excitement. The football team had a 6-4 record, the basketball team won the state championship, and the baseball team went to the regional championship! Larry was on the football and baseball teams and Mary Pat was a cheerleader for football and basketball. Mary Pat was cheerleading captain her senior year which saw another winning football and baseball season as well as the basketball team returning to the state championship in Jacksonville finishing as state runners-up! Mary Pat was also honored to be chosen as Homecoming Queen with Larry as her proud escort.
The strong academic, spiritual, and social experiences of four years at MCC prepared them for the rigors of college. Larry assisted with MCC JV football, then Varsity assistant under Coach Frank Guertin when the team went undefeated and won the school’s first district championship. Most definitely a vision of things to come!
They both attended Brevard Community College for two years, then transferred to Florida State University. This was a time of transitions in their relationship, but neither “took their eyes off the ball” for very long! Larry earned his degree in PE in 1978. Mary Pat remained in Tallahassee another year to work in her brother’s booming bicycle business, then transferred to the University of Central Florida to finish her degree in Elementary/Early Childhood Education and plan their wedding. After a successful internship at Satellite High School, under previous MCC Coach Frank Guertin, Larry began his career at Satellite in the fall of 1978. As “fate” and a true God intervention would have it, the head football and athletic director jobs became available at MCC in the winter of 1979. At age 24 and with very little experience, Larry interviewed and was offered the job. This would turn out to be the second life-changing experience at MCC.
Mary Pat and Larry were married at Holy Name of Jesus on June 21, 1980. Their wedding was concelebrated by twins Frs. Peter and Paul Henry (who was MCC Principal) and Fr. John O’Hare, an Eason family friend, in a large, traditional Catholic wedding attended by their families and many friends.
Mary Pat began her teaching career at Holy Name of Jesus, her alma mater, coached the cheerleaders at MCC, taught CCD, and assisted Larry with his many AD duties. Again, the strong Catholic influence was directing their lives and careers. Larry was able to hire a staff that included MCC alumni friends/ fellow teammates Gerry Thistle and Mike Wasiewicz and a great friend from FSU Bob Wanagill. These valuable friendships continue today as with many of their former classmates.
After a career that spanned 40 years, they agree the span from 1979-1983 was the best! The highlights of those years include their marriage, births

of two of four children: Chris born September 12, 1981, just hours before the first game of season 3 and Cara born May 23, 1983, during spring football season, and working with a wonderful, inspirational Principal Fr. Michael Woodcock. He not only baptized three of their four children but was also Cara’s godfather. Fr. Woodcock is missed dearly. After three “losing” (by record only) seasons, our football team won the district in 1982 with a winning record!
The summer of 1983 brought a significant life change as they began the journey with the public school system. They moved to Stuart and Port St. Lucie where Larry taught PE and was an assistant football coach at Southfork High School. Mary Pat cared for the children, taught CCD, and worked part-time before accepting a full-time teaching position at Palm City Elementary. She then helped open and teach at a new preschool. Their third child, Carly, was born June 7, 1986. Four days later Larry moved to Pensacola to begin a new experience teaching PE and as an assistant varsity football coach at Pensacola High School. Mary Pat and the children followed in August, and she taught kindergarten for one year then helped open the new state pre-k program for two years. They truly loved the years in Pensacola, but the spring of 1989 brought them back to Melbourne. Larry taught and coached at Eau Gallie High School from 1989-1993 then Rockledge High School until his retirement in 2015. Mary Pat taught pre-k at Riviera Elementary from 1989-1996 then pre-k, kindergarten, TK-1 at University Park Elementary until her retirement in 2020. The highlights of those years include the birth of Michael on April 29, 1996, back-to-back state championships at Rockledge, experiencing the success of their children in academics, athletics, and now their careers. Presently they enjoy participating in the lives of their two beautiful granddaughters, Catalina and Cara. They have also “caught the travel bug” and love experiencing our USA and other countries and their cultures.
Over the years, they both stayed involved with MCC. Mary Pat chaired the Phonathon in the early ‘90s and became a member of the alumni board. Larry assisted with varsity football in 2016-17 as well as strength and conditioning coaching until the pandemic occurred. Two of their children experienced MCC as Cara taught/coached for two years, and Michael assisted with JV football in 2016. Larry was also recently honored as an inductee in the MCC Athletic Hall of Fame. He will now chair the newly formed advisory council. Volunteering will always be a part of their lives at the school they love so dearly!
