How do I choose the right colours?

It’s important in fashion to try different things – don’t be afraid but trust your gut instinct. Go with your initial feeling – if you like a colour it’s worth trying. If you feel an attraction to it, it usually works. Hold it up to your face against a mirror. It’s best to do this without make-up. Be discriminating but not hard on yourself! It’s good to hear another opinion, so I take pictures of myself when shopping to show my husband or my best friend. I know it’s easy to go into a shop and look for your size first but start with colour because it can really change your look.

Which colours are good for summer?

Pink is a really happy colour, it’s very youthful. Orange can make you or break you. Remember, when you get the colour right, you’ll know – you’ll feel

Why is colour so important ?

I’ve been styling both celebrities and real women for a very long time and the very first thing I look at is their colouring – what colours suit them and, importantly, what colours don’t.

Many women are afraid of colour but it can change your perception of yourself and the perception of the world about you. Putting on the right colour can really lift your spirits. You’ll look good and feel it, and that will make you hold yourself differently, and the world will react to that.

What if you love just wearing black clothes?

I know that black is many women’s default setting. It’s easy to wear black because you think it’s really slimming

and very flattering. And, yes, for the most part it is. But all-black is a very heavy, strong look and can be quite difficult to wear. When you put black against a face that’s, say, past 40, it’s very ageing and heavy. If you’re going to do all black I like to add some colour near the face. It breaks the black and makes it softer and easier, and it’s much more fun. The lime trim on this black top works and you can also break up the black with a colourful accessory.

As an alternative to black, I suggest a deep navy – a midnight blue, like the colour of the sky just turning night. It’s still slimming and flattering but the richness of the blue softens the effect.

good. You can play with colour with your lipsticks. I mix mine myself every day – it’s like being a painter – so try a little red with your coral. There are so many different shades of red lipstick, from a blood-red, vibrant shade to reds with orange. If you’re scared to wear orange try it first with a lipstick.

What are the summer trends?

Try colour blocking – use different, bold pops of colour together. Try a bold orange top and a cobalt blue skirt. Orange and blue? Although it seems wrong, it’s actually right! If colour blocking is too strong for you, another way to get your colour in is to choose a head-to-toe print like a maxi dress. If you don’t want to show your arms in a maxi dress go for a shrug in a nice, light fabric. When choosing the colour of your shrug, look at the print of your dress and pull out its colours. You can also do this with accessories, so try bangles or a necklace in the same colours as the print to finish off the look.

Tell us about your style rules…

Sometimes rules give you guidance but it’s fun to have the confidence to break out of that shell. I think of fashion as a rollercoaster, and if you’re too scared to get on it you’ll never know how much fun you’ll have. You know how when you get off the rollercoaster you feel good and the adrenaline goes through you?

Well, that’s how you feel when you get dressed and try new things, and you’re really happy with it.

Sarah Patel Senior Marketing Co-Ordinator for Evans, shares her style tips for this summer…

What are your tips for dressing with confdence this summer?

Being comfortable no matter what shape you are. There are always new trends which magazines love to focus on but there is no point forcing yourself to wear a trend if it’s not for you. For me, shorts – no matter what style – make my legs look shorter and cut me off around my widest part, so I never wear them. I used to hate finding clothes for summer as I always felt on show. But I learned that beachwear has shapes that suit my body; they’re loose fitting and come in thin fabrics, so I layer them up and wear them underneath vest tops and cardigans, with leggings. Then I feel covered up but stylish. Confidence comes with finding the staple items that work for you, from a maxi dress or a floaty top to a pair of wedges.

How do you style your shape?

I’m an Hourglass but I’m insecure about my middle, so I not only style to my shape, but I also focus on what I feel comfortable in. I tend to wear oversize shapes on my top half with close-fitting jeans or leggings. I love soft fabrics such as silk, chiffon and cotton in oversize shirt dresses which skim over the body. I don’t feel complete without a statement accessory; my obsession with oversize handbags means I like luggage-style holdalls as everyday bags.

What is your style rule?

Wear what makes you feel good.

I always get told to wear more colour but I wear what I am happy in and, if that is black from tip to toe, then I’m confident in doing so. Know your own colour palette inside out, and that gives you the confidence, when shopping, to narrow all the options.

This dress (above) is made from a beautifully soft material with a flattering art deco-style geometric print, which I combined with an on-trend waistcoat to give the outfit a more casual feel.

I love the bold colour of this top I’m

wearing for work (top left) as it is one of the must-have colours for the season.

The sleeves give good coverage on the arms, too. I teamed it with a purple statement necklace to contrast the orange and break up the colour. This kimono is the perfect summer essential as it covers up the tops of the arms and the cut skims the body for a flattering fit.

The print is so intricate and colourful that I put it with a simple, white silk top and light jeggings for an everyday look.

What are your make-up tips?

I can’t leave the house without a smoky eye! In summer I use a lighter shade of brown to create the same effect but in a softer, more subtle way. The easiest way to inject some summer colour into my look is with nail varnish – I can experiment with new colours without the commitment!

Whose style do you admire?

Mary-Kate Olsen for her use of layering, neutral shades and confidence in not following the ‘trend’. She looks effortlessly cool. Olivia Palermo also looks perfect in tailored classic shapes.
