intro.

ABOUT ME TERRY WU BACKGROUND & CONCEPT I am Terry Wu, a graphic designer living in San Diego, CA. As a recent graduate from the Academy of Art University, I now hold a master’s degree in Graphic Design and Digital Media as well as a bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture and Design. I am also an art editor, working at a global media company, Epoch Media Group for years. I am an architecture enthusiast. I see graphic design as another form of architecture. “Graphic design repeats in miniature what architecture does monumentally.” Successful graphic and architecture design both end with inventions that sit at the intersection of utility and aesthetics. In my design, I am always pursuing a kind of “architectural beauty”, which is extremely structured, organized, balanced, clean and neat.

P01 CREATE THE MOMENTS. OBJECTIVE Choose a dead brand and redesign its brand identity to fit a future vision. Through research, identify the company’s soul and ensure that it transitions into the businesses re-brand.

CONCEPT I chose Kodak for this project. Kodak used to make cameras and films, and now with my rebranding, it is broadening the mission to provide creative professionals with many new ways to store, process and share images and videos as memories, information, portfolio and entertainment anywhere anytime. The new Kodak offers an engaging social networking platform, large-capacity storage solutions and a set of professional creative applications. Kodak is always here to empower the creative community, help creative professionals to share and push their ideas forward.

P02 HEALTHY INDULGENCES. OBJECTIVE Choose a local small business (café, theatre or art gallery) that needs a new website and mobile application. Design or redesign a website for it.

CONCEPT I chose a small café called Snowy Village which newly opened dessert shop located in Mira Mesa, San Diego, California. Snowy Village Dessert Café is looking to get an official website in order to increase sales, improve interaction with existing and potential customers and to build up the brand. My goal is to develop a well-thought-out responsive website (including desktop, tablet and mobile versions) to fulfill the client’s needs and expectations for this website.

P03 POET IN CONCRETE. OBJECTIVE Design a book that celebrates “artisans, that displays a well-defined type system, includes graphics, and a hard cover.

CONCEPT Tadao Ando is my favorite architect. He was the first man who got four major international architecture awards including the Pritzker Prize. Ando is a master of using natural materials like glass and concrete, and his works has minimalist aesthetics and deeply influenced by traditional culture. So for this project, I designed a book to introduce him and showcase his seven master pieces in four countries from 1989 to 2016.

P04 WHERE PETS GET SMART. OBJECTIVE Considering responsive design, utilize UX principles to redesign an e-commerce website for a brand whose website doesn’t have good user experience.

CONCEPT I am an animal lover and very interested in animal related products and service, so I chose PetSmart for this project. The current PetSmart doesn’t provide very good user experience. To improve this website with better UX design, my goals are to create clear classification and hierarchy for the web contents, create a clear and easy-to-understand icon system and visual representation. Additionally, clear layout for the category pages and an easy-to-follow check-out page are very important for online shopping experience.

P05 A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE IS A DIFFERENT VISION OF LIFE.

OBJECTIVE Define a problem in the world today and create a product or service that addresses that issue. Design and develop a unique visual system through multiple deliverables.

CONCEPT According to published reports, “learning a foreign language improves ability to solve problems, logical thinking and creativity. I am bilingual in English, Mandarin (and Cantonese), so with my personal experience and interest, I created a brand TerraLingo to promote young child second language acquisition. Through the booth, app and sample learning kits, parents and children will find out interesting and useful information of the six recommended languages. TerraLingo also help parents make wise choices on which language(s) their children should learn.
