2024 Terry Impact Report

Page 1

It is a great honor to write my first letter as Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors and deliver good news about the collective and continuing success in building a community of educated leaders who utilize their talents to strengthen the state of Texas and impact the world I am ever thankful for the amazing work of the Terry Foundation staff and Board who devote their time and talents to ensure that the gift and opportunity available through the Foundation continues for current and future generations of Terry Scholars.

The financial footing of the Foundation remains strong. Since inception, the Foundation has supported 6,782 current and former students with a total funding commitment of $396 million. As of December 2024, our endowment stood at $512 Million, supporting 1,001 students at 11 public universities in Texas. The exciting news: the total number of students receiving assistance from the Foundation has increased significantly over the last couple of years as we enjoy relative stability in asset performance and look for opportunities to make up for prior years, when market forces where not as favorable. The goal, as always, is to award as many scholarships as possible with an eye toward preserving the generosity and vision of Howard and Nancy Terry into perpetuity.

Our Terry Scholars are outstanding performers and leaders on campus. Our entering 2024 freshmen cohort counted 29 valedictorians, while the all-scholar GPA was a remarkable 3.62. Just as impressive, our scholars take on important leadership roles at their respective universities, proving themselves as individuals who will live and grow in the moment of the Terry opportunity and become assets to Texas and beyond.

This spring, Terry Alumni will interview and select 295 new scholars for enrollment in the fall of 2025 – an expected financial commitment to students of close to $22 Million. This is a tremendous accomplishment, one that would never happen without the continued dedication and support of the Terry Community, who give back with their time and talent to interview and select our newest Scholars. Interviews are the most important thing we do and set the Foundation apart from other organizations with similar goals. We are a self-selecting crowd dedicated to scholarship, leadership, and community service. My thanks go out to our students and alumni for their work in the interview process and for making sure these core values remain central to what it means to be a Terry Scholar and the concept of “giving back.”

We commend the Terry Community for another outstanding year of dedicated volunteerism in their communities and the willingness to support others through gifts of time, talent, energy and resources to the causes they hold dear. Please remember to think of the Terry Foundation and the Terry Scholars Fund as you think about giving back to your community. As a former recipient of the Terry scholarship, I can think of few other pivotal events that changed my life trajectory than the day I received my award letter. It is truly a launching pad to opportunity that would have never been possible otherwise. I think about creating that feeling for every new Terry Scholar each time I give back the Foundation. No contribution is too small, and every gift makes a real difference to the success of our Scholars.

The Terry Scholars Fund just completed its second year and awarded $200,000 in December 2024 toward spring 2025 scholarships. One hundred percent of TSF contributions go to fund scholarships and we are very grateful to the scholars and their friends who chose to make an investment in current and future Terry Scholars. Our deepest thanks go out to Meyling Ortiz (TAMU 1999), Harrison Pierce (UTSA 2001), and new board member Leigh Darilek (UT 1996) for their continued good work and stewardship of the Terry Scholars Fund (TSF). The TSF is off to a great start, and the response has been truly amazing!

We would like to take a moment to recognize and congratulate Blane Skiles (UNT 2012) on completing his first year as the newest member of the Foundation Board of Directors and thank him for his dedication and service to the Terry Mission. Additionally, we would like to again acknowledge and thank Chairman Emeritus, Rhett Campbell for nearly four decades of service and leadership to ensure the success of the Terry Legacy. His work and contributions built a framework for the success the Foundation achieved in 2024, even in his absence.

Finally, we applaud and thank the incredible staff at the Foundation. Their daily work and dedication to our mission are truly the untold story of our success in developing access to education through higher education. No one does it better. Just look at our scholars.

Thank you for a great year; we look forward to many more.

Howard and Nancy Terry

In 1987, Howard and Nancy Terry founded what is now the largest private source for scholarships in Texas. The Terrys believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand would, in turn, give back - to the Foundation, to their college campuses, to their communities and beyond. Today, the success and impact of thousands of Terry Scholars stand as testimonies to the wisdom of that belief.

It is truly amazing to think about the impact that Howard and Nancy Terry have had on higher education in Texas. 6,872 Terry Scholarships totaling more than $396 million dollars have been invested in outstanding Texas students since 1987.

Those Terry Scholars have impacted their families and communities through the gift of a college education, and they steward the Terrys’ mission and vision into the future.

SCHOLARSHIP LEADERSHIP SERVICE COMMUNITY

Terry Scholars challenge themselves academically, personally, and professionally while setting an example for their peers through leadership and service to others. During their time on campus and beyond, Terry Scholars build and nurture a supportive community that celebrates the strengths of each individual. The strength of the Terry Community lies in the diverse perspectives, gifts and goals of Terry Scholars. Although the Terry Pillars of Excellence are common standards held by all Terry Scholars, each individual embodies and demonstrates them in their own way.

"The Terry Scholarship gave me safety, freedom, and stability...I desperately wanted to go to college to find a fresh start in life. I didn't know how though, because I had no way of affording it. The Terry Scholarship changed ALL of that for me and opened doors for me that I would never had dreamed of."

"The Terry Scholarship has meant that there were always people on my side. If they believed in me enough to invest so heavily in my future, then I should believe in myself too, even when dealing with imposter syndrome. It allowed me to focus on my studies with no financial stress. Having this blessing encouraged me to make the most of my time in college and cemented my gut-feeling that Aggieland was the place for me. Mentoring and alumni events in particular always left me inspired to explore my options and re-invigorated to continue my studies."

to everyone who has chosen the Terry Scholars Fund as part of their pledge to give back. A full list of our donors can be found at the back of this report. Congratulations

The Terry Foundation Financials

"The Terry Scholarship meant to me… everything. It gave a kid a chance, a kid from a place where no one in his family had ever received a scholarship, where no one had ever graduated from college. The scholarship saw something in me when no one else really did.

I didn’t have guidance. I didn’t have parents with doctor or lawyer friends. I was just a kid from Section 8 housing, where the norm was a simple 9-to-5 job, working just to get by, maybe taking your family out to eat once or twice a year if you were lucky. That was what I saw growing up. That was what I thought life was.

But the Terry Scholarship introduced me to privilege, not in the material sense, but in the form of opportunity. It placed me in rooms I never imagined I’d be in, surrounded by people and experiences that allowed me to grow into the person I am today. And for that, I cannot thank the Foundation enough.

Today, I hear people tell me that I’m a bright student, that I’m doing great things, that I give them hope for our generation. But they’re meeting the 22-yearold me, the version shaped by life experiences and opportunities. The Terry Foundation, however, met the 17-year-old me, the one who didn’t know about biology, graduate school, loans, scholarships, or financial aid. I didn’t know because I had no one to tell me.

Now, I’m stepping into a new space, breaking generational barriers. I come from a family where no one has ever been formally educated, but because the Terry Foundation believed in me, I will now turn around and impact countless lives through my future profession as a medical doctor.

To everyone who sat on that board, who looked past my lack of accolades, my absence from campus tours, my unpolished speech, and instead saw my heart, thank you. Out of thousands of applicants, I was one of twelve chosen at UTEP. And because you touched my life, I will dedicate mine to touching the lives of others."

BRYAN ROSE, UTEP 2021

“Going abroad was a life-changing experience, and it was the first time I traveled anywhere on my own, especially my first time being out of the country...I met the most whimsical and warm-hearted people with whom I shared my whole experience. My biggest takeaway was learning about the power of being vulnerable and authentically yourself no matter where you go... Life flies by too quickly to not try new things and be bold.”

CHARIDAN MATTIES

UTD 2022, Italy

“Studying abroad has been a goal of mine for a long time, and finally getting the opportunity to do so was amazing. I am very thankful for the Terry Foundation's support. It was the first time I have traveled outside of the United States and hopefully not the last. I also really enjoyed getting to explore Copenhagen and learning all I could about Denmark, which was a country I did not know much about before this trip.”

“Studying abroad in Australia was such an amazing experience, and this would not have been possible without the support of the Terry Foundation. This was my first time traveling a far distance without my family, and this experience taught me so much! For instance, I was exposed to the Aussie way of life, their public health system, and their rich history. I was able to explore Australia, visiting the Great Barrier Reef, meeting local wildlife, and exploring the rainforest. If I wrote about everything I did, I could go on for pages, and once again I have Terry to thank for that.”

“Studying abroad in Taiwan was an incredible, once in a lifetime opportunity. I was able to travel abroad for the first time, experience new cultures and cuisines, and see beautiful landscapes.”

"The opportunities I’ve received and been able to pursue while in college can all be attributed to being a Terry Scholar in some shape or form. Thank you for believing in me and allowing me to graduate from college debt free. Thank you for supporting me, for giving me so many opportunities, allowing me to meet so many great people. I am very proud to be a Terry Scholar!"

"Every time I get the chance to interview potential Terry Scholars, I am left with how lucky I am to have

received

this

gift

myself.

The candidates we interview are incredible; someone thought I was incredible too. It always humbles me and inspires me to continue to give back to this organization that saw something in me so special that they wanted to change my life and my family’s lives forever."

We all have different goals and follow outlines at various stages of completion and detail. However, our pride as Terry Scholars and our commitment to giving back are clear for anyone to see.

This foundation changed the trajectory of my life and I will continue to work towards changing the trajectory of other scholar’s lives. Whether that be through interviews, mentorship, alumni relations. As each year progresses, I plan to do more.
