CRIMSON CLOVER (OP)

Excellent overwintering selection for nitrogen fixing. Trifolium incarnatum (A) Non-runner variety that's easily eliminated by tilling. Can fix 125 pounds of nitrogen per acre and attracts beneficial insects if allowed to flower in summer. Pre-inoculated.

Hardiness zone: 6 and higher for overwintering Seeding rate: 30–40 pounds per acre

NEW ZEALAND WHITE CLOVER (OP)

Low-growing perennial—an exceptional selection for between row plantings and orchards. Trifolium repens (P) Reliably resilient nitrogen fixing clover reaches only about 8 inches tall and forms a lush, green mat. Vigorous crop is more drought tolerant than White Dutch and thrives in a wide range of soils. Capable of fixing 170 pounds of nitrogen per acre.

Hardiness zone: 4 Seeding rate: 6–10 pounds per acre

SMALL FAVA (OP)

Magnificent stands up to 6 feet tall. Vicia faba (A) Overwintered in zones 7 and warmer, Small Favas offer an immense amount of biomass along with nitrogen fixing. Spring sown in cooler zones. Tolerates temporarily waterlogged soils. Best when drilled 3 inches.

Among the fastest cover crops and best phosphorus accumulator. Fagopyrum esculentum (A) Sow spring to summer for a 5–6 week turnaround. Easy to till, and a superior pollinator attractant if left to flower. Excellent trap crop for thrips.

OATS (OP)

Fast growing and a great nurse crop for legumes. Avena sativa (A) A multi-purpose cover crop for erosion control, fall planted and naturally winter killed for a soft, spring seedbed, or spring/summer sown and mown for oat hay. Overwinters in the maritime NW.

Hardiness zone: 8 Seeding rate: 50 pounds per acre

A well-balanced cover crop for fall sowing. Trifolium incarnatum, Lathyrus hirsutus, Vicia villosa, Secale cereale, Lolium multiflorum (A) Our signature cover crop blend for overwintering is a blend of Austrian Field Peas, Crimson Clover, Hairy Vetch, and Annual and Winter Ryes. This multi-benefit mix helps control weeds and erosion while fixing nitrogen and adding rich, organic matter when tilled in.
