PROM

On April 30, 2022, Cardinal Newman Juniors, Seniors, and their dates attended their first off-campus prom since 2019, “A Night in the City.” They boarded the Fume Blanc yacht and enjoyed a beautiful cruise of the San Francisco Bay through and around all of its iconic landmarks. Students enjoyed dining, dancing, casino games, caricature drawings, and a 3-D photo booth! Jack Erwin and Jessica Nowaki were crowned Prom King & Queen, and the DJ also recognized Kyle Hawkins’ 18th birthday.

AP RESEARCH CAPSTONE

This spring, nine seniors completed their capstone projects with their final year in AP Research. Each student chose their own topic to investigate, and worked throughout the fall researching and analyzing published research papers in their discipline. After completing research proposals, and receiving institutional approval for human participation in research, students began their individual journeys in conducting original research. These nine students completed a paper and oral defense very similar to a master’s thesis or a dissertation, and we are all very proud of their accomplishments. Cardinal Newman High School is proud to celebrate rising sophomore Jude Stone on his return from two weeks of Gothia Cup competition in Sweden. Each year, around 1700 teams from 80 nations participate in the tournament. Though only 16, Stone played with the U17 Boys Elite teams, a year above his age group. As #10 on the NorCal Premier PDP team, he started every game and was integral to the team’s overall success.

Stone has played soccer for eleven years. He played on the Santa Rosa United club team for nine years. During this time, the U.S. National Team Training Centers selected him twice. He also played with the Real Salt Lake Academy at the LA Galaxy Cup. He was an AllElite Clubs National League NorCal Conference firstteam selection in the 202021 season. He plays for the Norcal Player Development Program (PDP) State Team. The NorCal Player Development Program identifies, develops, and showcases Northern California’s top motivated and talented players.

“As a freshman, Jude was one the hardest working and focused players on the team,” Cardinal Newman High School Soccer Coach Ryan Corriveau said. “He was able to lead by example through his work ethic alone. We’re excited to see how this experience has influenced his game and natural leadership skills.”

Twenty-four teams from nine countries played in the Gothia Puma Trophy (B17) series. Teams were divided into six groups. NorCal Premier PDP was in Group 1 with Club Sport Emelec (Ecuador), AIK FF (Sweden), and Helsingborgs IF (Sweden).

“We tied AIK in our first match,” said Jude Stone. “Next, we lost to the Ecuadorian team (Club Sport Emelec) and then tied a second team from Sweden (Helsingborgs IF). In the second top bracket, we tied with the team from Mexico (Esc. Rayados de Monterrey) but lost in the penalty kick.”

When asked what he learned from his experience, Stone quickly answered, “It takes a tremendous amount of focus and dedication to play at this level. It was like being a pro for ten days. Everyone was dialed in from start to finish.” And when asked about the most challenging part, he answered, “It’s tough being so far away from family and friends that long.”

The games aired live in Sweden – around midnight for his family in Santa Rosa. His parents, Ethan and Katie, allowed Jude’s two younger brothers, Gavin and Griffin, to stay up to watch him on television.

His soccer coach Ryan Corriveau, also tuned in. “It was fun and surreal,” Courriveau explained. “I would call his parents during the games at midnight and cheer him on. The boys’ and girls’ teams watched each other’s matches, and we could hear the girls cheering for the team on TV. It was just such a fun moment for all of us watching from home.”
