means “beginning,” as the Class of 2022 completes one phase of their development and starts another. I can tell you that this Class is ready. Every Class of students is special and unique in its own way, but the Class of 2022 will always be held in high esteem because of the challenges we faced together. They could easily be called the Class of Resiliency. To follow the Tubbs Fire of 2017 with a global pandemic is a period of time and events unprecedented in Cardinal Newman’s history. Yet, they persevered and thrived. The Class of 2022 held together through thick and thin. Supported by parents, faculty, and the community, they responded well to adversity. We all did. As I sat on the graduation stage, a wave of emotion and appreciation for our community washed over me. Students and faculty to my sides, and the stadium filled with our community in front. I felt proud. Hopeful. AndBlessed.Icarry that hope forward to starting a new school year. We’re one student shy of having an incoming class of 176 students. Conversations with teachers and administrators over the summer were abuzz with excitement! Like playing in a championship game -- our faculty and staff gave their all for the school year. At the end of the school year, we’re tired, proud, but in need of a break. Shortly into the summer, the enthusiasm rebuilds, and we recharge for our new beginning -- the new school Thisyear.year, we continue to focus on improving the student learning experience. We had less staff turnover and are grateful for the stability that brings. In addition, we hired additional faculty to meet the needs of our growing student body. Beyond our focus on high academic standards, we’re working on improving our interpersonal and communicationorganizationalthis year. We need to reconnect with one another and focus on strengthening relationships. The dispersed and remote learning methods caused us to be more independent in our roles. We want to return to the collegial and collaborative learning community we have always been. That extends to families, too. The pandemic suppressed our time together as a community. We invite you to join us as often as possible this school year. Attend the Back to School Night, have Fun in the Fall, and savor the parent/student socials. Then, get back in the stands to cheer on our talented student athletes! The 2022-23 school year is brimming with hope! But, of course, we’ll have our challenges. Still, we can be confident in ourselves and our community to meet whatever may come with the light of optimism, the glow of the Holy Spirit.

A PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Ask anyone in education about graduation, and you’ll learn that the moment is the favorite singular event for teachers and administrators. It is the culmination of our ministry for that particular group of students. We have laughed with them, cried, encouraged, and challenged them. We were with them the entire way, instinctively knowing when to be more present and less as they matured into amazing young Commencementadults.

On Becoming the Light

Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

John 8:12; Matthew 5:14-16; 2 Corinthians 4:6

5 CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL

You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.

Look at what happens when you combine a few verses of scripture:Jesusspoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of [Jesus] Christ.

Helping Cardinal Newman students understand that they can choose to approach life from the perspective of being a source of positivity or a victim of negativity is often the first step in making faith relevant to their young lives. To embrace one’s positivity is to unlock the Holy Spirit within and gain the ability to see beyond the daily struggles so as not to be worn down. Surrounded by a positive peer group of like-minded students, their light and the light of Christ eliminates the darkness of fear, worry, and self-doubt. They are comforted by friends with a similar Spirit and know they are not alone.

A CARDINAL NEWMAN PRIORITY

believers that our daily needs will be met is a common theme at the heart of what scripture teaches and the sacrifices made by Jesus and his Thoughdisciples.asimplification, the good news tells us, “relax, there are no reasons to fear being alive, for God will provide. Have hope and confidence that your life will be filled with goodness and joy.” The Shepherd leads us to green grasses and still waters. We just need to believe and accept the mysteries of faith. As society has stepped away from Christianity, it has lost a life spring for hope. Folks struggle to find or feel a true purpose, a reason for being. Existential crisis sets in and can cause people to feel alone in a world preoccupied with self-interest.

At Cardinal Newman High School, our Theology classes counter the idea of being alone in the world and provide access to the Christian faith as the tool for We’resalvation.not heavy-handed about it. Our goal is to reinforce and expand faith among our Catholic community members. At the same time, we are open and inviting to others who may have yet to discover the grace of God and the peace it provides. We defer to God’s timing in awakening his presence to individuals. Our job is to share, inform, inspire, and love so that it is recognized and embraced when the awakening occurs. The last few years have challenged everyone’s confidence in hope. The impact of the pandemic has hurt our interpersonal skills and caused society to be more easily frazzled and frustrated. As a result, we experience curtness at every turn – while driving, shopping, dining, learning, and even at church. Our young people are still building their coping

BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN HOPE

A CLASS THAT PRAYS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER.

The ideas of faith and spirituality are very personal and thus tricky to precisely define. However, one idea that resonates well with our Catholic Identity is the notion that faith is having confidence in Assuringhope.

The Cardinal Newman learning experience is purpose-built to prepare students to successfully reach college and thrive. Contrary to public school student populations, 100% of our students are college-minded. That allows our process to be focused on meeting the needs specific to that shared outcome. From tutoring to special projects, it’s all about elevating the student. Our courses are college preparatory. Though that generally connotes “harder,” that’s not true for our students. Appropriately challenging to keep them engaged is more accurate. Few efforts build greater confidence in hope than when a student rises to meet a challenge they initially doubted they could do. They learn to trust themselves. Hope grows, and anxiety or worry Studentsdissipates.alsoknow they can count on our faculty and other students for help. Cardinal Newman creates a safe learning environment that encourages risk and provides a safety net that becomes increasingly invisible as students Attendingmatriculate.collegeisa hope. Being surrounded by a community dedicated to helping one achieve that hope ensures its probability. Our college counselors work with students to identify their interests, explore colleges, apply for scholarships, and apply for the schools of their choice. We serve as warm demanders, holding students accountable to themselves. When those college acceptance letters arrive, we are just as proud as the students. We celebrate with them. It completes the loop and confirms that they were right to have confidence in hope. They were rewarded for living in the light of faith, within the wisdom of scripture, and guided by the Good Shepherd. That kind of hope lasts a lifetime.

Cardinal Newman High School is proud to celebrate rising sophomore Jude Stone on his return from two weeks of Gothia Cup competition in Sweden. Each year, around 1700 teams from 80 nations participate in the tournament. Though only 16, Stone played with the U17 Boys Elite teams, a year above his age group. As #10 on the NorCal Premier PDP team, he started every game and was integral to the team’s overall success. Stone has played soccer for eleven years. He played on the Santa Rosa United club team for nine years. During this time, the U.S. National Team Training Centers selected him twice. He also played with the Real Salt Lake Academy at the LA Galaxy Cup. He was an AllElite Clubs National League NorCal Conference firstteam selection in the 202021 season. He plays for the Norcal Player Development Program (PDP) State Team. The NorCal Player Development Program identifies, develops, and showcases Northern California’s top motivated and talented players.

“As a freshman, Jude was one the hardest working and focused players on the team,” Cardinal Newman High School Soccer Coach Ryan Corriveau said. “He was able to lead by example through his work ethic alone. We’re excited to see how this experience has influenced his game and natural leadership Twenty-fourskills.” teams from nine countries played in the Gothia Puma Trophy (B17) series. Teams were divided into six groups. NorCal Premier PDP was in Group 1 with Club Sport Emelec (Ecuador), AIK FF (Sweden), and Helsingborgs IF “We(Sweden).tiedAIK in our first match,” said Jude Stone. “Next, we lost to the Ecuadorian team (Club Sport Emelec) and then tied a second team from Sweden (Helsingborgs IF). In the second top bracket, we tied with the team from Mexico (Esc. Since becoming a co-ed high school in 2011, our focus on women’s facilities has seen the completion of a new softball field and bleachers, a dance studio, women’s locker room, and now women’s batting cages and turf practice field. It is the tremendous commitment and generosity of our donors that have allowed such progress. We are grateful!

Our new Women’s Batting Cages and turf practice field were completed this summer thanks to the wonderful generosity of the Braccia Family. This new facility marks another milestone for our young women as we continue to implement and improve our facilities around campus.

Progress continues on the Student Life Center. Following its completion, we have two other buildings to replace from the fire. The counseling center and the administration building. Currently, administration is in clergy housing converted to office space and counseling is embedded in the new classroom building. Our hope is to combine these building needs with a theater for the performing arts. We’ll be seeking community input as part of our Strategic Planning Process on the types of foundational technology to include -- coding labs, robotics, gaming, digital media -- if you’re in the technology sector we want your ideas!

LEADERSHIP & REFLECTION

In The Bible and Morality: Biblical Roots of Christian Conduct, the Pontifical Biblical Commission (PBC) writes: “From the very beginning, the beatitudes place morality in a radical context. They affirm paradoxically the fundamental dignity of the human being in the person of the most disadvantaged, whom God defends in a preferential manner: the poor, the afflicted, the meek, the hungry, the persecuted.”

With a quick, surface level read through, it may not be clear that this passage guides us in Christian conduct. However, the PBC provides additional insight to help our students connect these blessings with their world. The Commission explains: The “poor in spirit” are those who “live in a precarious situation and, above all, acknowledge that they themselves have nothing, are wholly dependent on God.” Cardinal Newman students are encouraged to consider populations in Santa Rosa who live in precarious situations for their Christian Service work.

Our Theology courses teach the history of our faith to unpack the complex ideas, metaphors, and analogies used in scripture. The textbook, Our Catholic Faith: Living What We Believe, connects scripture’s fundamental tenets with our daily lives, providing practical and essential skills for being happy and compassionate.

Such work builds empathy and compassion, especially for the less fortunate. Those who mourn or are afflicted naturally want social justice, equity, and more inclusivity.

Many are surprised to learn that those desires are the teachings of Christ. The “merciful” are those who “offer active help to the needy” and “are ready to grant pardon.” Cardinal Newman students learn to develop the desire to help the needy through their Christian Service projects. And as teenagers, they certainly experience the need to forgive one another and to be forgiven for the social and personal mistakes we all “Peacemakers”make. are those who “do everything in their power to maintain and reestablish love-inspired fellowship among human beings.” We have many students at Cardinal Newman who are natural peacemakers. That’s not to say they avoid confrontation. On the contrary, they’re willing to work through challenges and hard feelings to navigate a way back to communion with others. In addition, our counseling staff is often a great help, building conflict mediation skills and sharing strategies for better “Thosecommunication.persecuted for righteousness sake” are faithful to God’s will “despite difficult consequences.” Most Christians today experience some degree of persecution for believing in God. Though mild compared to the horrors of history, it still presents a challenge. In some cases, our students can experience two levels of difficulties. First, they can be made fun of for being a believer or attending a Catholic school and having the affluence to afford a private school. In both cases, it’s essential to have a tactic to contextualize the undue criticism, be ready to grant pardon, and keep the faith.

Luke Lamperti, ’21, a member of the UK-based Trinity Racing Team, won the Lincoln Grand Prix in England this spring. The win is another outstanding success for the racer, following up on his wins in US racing last year. Building a strong resume in challenging races, while enjoying the training and places he goes, Luke has shown stamina and speed. His season moved back to the US with the Tulsa Tough criterium on June 10th; the result? He won! This led to the US National Criterium Championship, which entitled him to wear the Stars and Stripes jersey throughout the year. As the defending champion, expectations were high, as he would not be overlooked like last year when he came from behind to win at the line. Pulling away at the end again this year, he is now a twotime winner, a tremendous result for the young cyclist. He has been named to the USA cycling team and may sign with a World Tour team based in Europe to expand his opportunities. Follow him on Instagram at lukelampert.

The Wright Way Scooby Wright, ‘13, continues to make plays on the gridiron. The former all-state linebacker for the Cardinals and All-American at the University of Arizona is suiting up for the Birmingham Stallions of the recently resurrected United State Football League (USFL). Like he did during his stellar career at Cardinal Newman and Arizona, Wright is still making highlight-worthy plays. In the season opener, Wright had four tackles and a strip sack as the Stallions won 28-24. Qualifying for the playoffs after going 9-1, they advanced into the first championship game on July 3rd, playing Philadelphia. With the game close in the 4th quarter, Scooby intercepted a pass, returning it 45 yards for a touchdown, making the big play at the key moment, for a 33-30 win. After leaving Arizona in 2015 — a year removed from a historic sophomore season where he finished ninth in the Heisman voting — Wright was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2016. He played in 13 games in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals in 2016-17. Over the next two years, he played for the New England Patriots and in two separate independent leagues — the Alliance of American Football (AAF) and the XFL. The USFL has eight teams with games played in Birmingham, Alabama, broadcast on TV and streaming services. The playoffs were held in Canton, Ohio, home of the Hall of Fame, which now has a USFL wing, where you can find Scooby’s cleats on display! Follow him on Instagram at seventhroundscoob.

“Our Catholic faith guides us to be resilient during times of loss and tragedy, to maintain our confidence in recovery, and to be patient in our restoration,” said Father Brown. “Like many stories in Scripture, when all was lost, all was restored. Our community came together in grief, prayer, determination, and compassion to help us rebuild while keeping our arms around our students.”

Cardinal Newman High School and Saint Rose Catholic School plans to host a “Gathering with Gratitude” at their combined campuses on the fifth anniversary of the 2017 Tubbs Fire that destroyed both schools. The Gathering will include Mass, reflections, a dedication, a BBQ lunch, and Open Houses for both schools.

“At the fifth anniversary, we continue to recover and remain grateful for the community who supported us following the loss,” explained Cardinal Newman President, Dr. Linda Norman. “As devastating as the fire was, it revealed the importance and strength of community. It showcased what can be done together, with cooperation, and out of love for one another and our children. Our gathering honors that part of the tragedy, where it turned in the direction of triumph.”

The Gathering will begin with a call to prayer and Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2022. Following Mass, Father Moses Brown will dedicate a new statue of St. Angela de Merici with the charism, “serviam” (I Serve). St. Angela was an Italian educator in the 1500s who formed the Company of Saint Ursula, the forerunner of the Ursuline Order.

“Many of our families are first responders and first to see our school following the fire,” said Saint Rose Principal Kathleen Aymar. “They lost their homes and school, yet continued to serve and welcome our students back to school when we returned. Our collective faculties and staff did the same. Working with our Catholic family, school resumed in dispersed locations. And, though our buildings were gone, our community was not. Students felt loved and supported, and their learning continued.”

Dr. Norman, Father Brown, and Ms. Aymar refer to a file over four inches thick of letters, donations, prayers, and cards from all over the world that came in following the “Lossfire.brings love to the surface. Santa Rosa was hurt; we were grieving and feeling lost. Where would we even start? Yet, love showed up and got us all moving in the same direction. Love for one another, love from afar, love from prayer,” Dr. Norman concluded. We want to thank our community for that outpouring of love. Our service will mark a solemn event and recognize the grace and gifts that followed.”
