PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Laura Held Dear Cardinal Newman High School Community Members, The close of this 2015-2016 academic year brings the opportunity for us to “take stock” in our accomplishments, identify our next strategic initiatives for offering an excellent Catholic college prep experience, and joyfully thank you for the extraordinary support given to Cardinal Newman.

As you read through this Trinity edition, you too will smile with us as you learn of the extraordinary accomplishments of the graduating Class of 2016. Their academic prowess, their college and university selection, and their commitment to being a positive change in the broader community speaks to the importance of our message, Touching Hearts and Winning Minds. John Henry Cardinal Newman inspires us to teach and cultivate an excitement to grow in faith, learning and service. We congratulate each of our graduates and the members of their families as they integrate their Cardinal Newman experience in their future endeavors.

By the time you read this Trinity edition, we will be well underway on our next campus construction project. Over the course of these next three months, we are beginning Phase I of the Renovation Classroom Building Project.

The North Classroom Building, rooms 8-15, will receive a new roof, gutter and drainage upgrade, new heating and cooling ventilation system, and interior painting of all classroom space. The completion of the same work in the South Classroom Building, rooms 1-7 will be scheduled for Summer 2017. Phase II of this renovation project will address the future addition of new windows, doors and exterior painting for both classroom buildings.

As your partners in education, we remain deeply committed to our mission of educating our students in the wholeness of mind, body and spirit. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has focused much of his writing and preaching on the importance of the abundant compassion of God. Furthermore, we are inspired by Pope Francis’ direction on the importance of a Catholic School Education: “There are three languages: the language of the head, the language of the heart, and the language of the hands; education must go forward by these three ways; instructing how to think, helping students to feel well; accompanying students as they do what they have learned or learning to do”.

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING Graham Rutherford Time is precise and organized, yet can be difficult to measure as a personal experience.

We have clocks and calendars around us, phones that notify and remember appointments; at school, there are bells that ring regularly to move us about orderly and timely, with explanation needed when late, even detention if not excused. We say that Time does not wait for any of us, recognition of our mortality and the speed of live; sometimes we cannot call a timeout, even when we need one. The “Time of our Lives” feels appropriate to bring up at Graduation, true for many, felt that way upon reflection by others looking back at their experiences but again countered by those who felt time dragged, as they could not wait to leave high school behind and recall the difficult moments. What then to make of Time?

Will Time control us or will we use our time wisely? This quandary never ends, for students, teachers, parents, all people. We make our adjustments to time: giving it up, saving it up, using it up, holding on to it. As the Class of 2016 moves forward, we appreciate the time we shared with them, the time they gave in service, and the time God gives them in the future. They have been an indelible part of us, now they are Alums, with time on their hands and no time to waste.

While attending the Boys’ State luncheon, on a Sunday this past May, as the school representative, Time reared up a reminder of my past. Forty years ago, in the same Veteran’s Memorial Building in Santa Rosa, I went to a similar lunch, as preparation to go to the American Legion-sponsored week-long Government simulation and education event at Sacramento State. I learned a lot, enjoyed the other incoming seniors from throughout California, and remember the Capitol well, meeting my State Senator, being on the floor of the Assembly to pass legislation. Sharing these memories with our nominee Jack Murray,’17, and Gladys Castaneda,’17, who will be at Girls’ State, made me recognize a forty-year gap; no doubt I am much older to them than I am to myself. Still, what I learned in the summer of ’76, I have used as the basis in creating a Class Congress model, with a President and Supreme Court, for teaching my Government class over the years. Since 1988, I have had the ones who want to take it ahead, with an occasional make up member, here in summer, first at Ursuline, then at CN. Our system of government requires participation and involvement to work its best; without clear education on the subject, citizens do not understand enough to make it work well. Each election reminds us of these difficulties, as the choices may not be what we want yet are what has emerged. If we do not like a law, we can work to change it, but that is easier said than done. In talking with this year’s delegates, another truth occurred to me that measures time as more closely related; the Governor, when I was at Boys’ State, was Jerry Brown, who serves in the same role again now, which is a wholly different measure of time. In 1976, that would not have been predicted; a once and future Governor? My take is that my students and I are not separated as much by time as I thought; we have common connections that make our experiences related.

Looking ahead to next year, the summertime vacation will end by mid-August, when we will be back ready to go full out for the 2016-17 school year. By then, the new roof will be on rooms 8-15, with better air quality and temperature control, if all goes well. Other improvement projects will be completed, though it will take some time to have the County approve our property extension, bringing the Hoffer house and barn site back together with the school site. While things seem to take time to get done, when looking back, it seems like no time since we added and expanded over the last ten years.

Time will tell the rest, so it is said.

BACCALAUREATE MASS The Baccalaureate Mass took place on Thursday, May 21, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cotati. Fr. Raul Lemus served as the principal celebrant and Fr. Moses Brown as the concelebrant. The Class of 2015 was beautifully-dressed in graduation gowns and the church was filled to capacity with relatives and friends.

The first reading was from the Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1-15) that speaks about everything having an appropriate time. For example, “A time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot; a time to kill and a time to heal.” The Gospel was John 15:1217 where Jesus gives us the commandment to love one another as he loves us.

The homily reminded the class of our universal call to holiness, and Catholic author and speaker, Matthew Kelly’s fundamental principle “Become the Best Version of Ourselves” became the theme. Fr. Raul spoke about Matthew Kelly’s book Rediscover Catholicism where he mentions three flawed philosophies that our culture has been built on: individualism, hedonism and minimalism.

Finally, an antidote to those three philosophies was given using a prayer that Blessed Cardinal Newman wrote titled The Mission of My Life and questioned students by asking, “God will call on you. Will you hear the Lord?”

2016 BISHOP’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION Bishop Vasa accepted the recommendation from the Catholic Schools Council (CSC) of the Diocese that Tom Bonfigli, (CN Class of ’71, CN Teacher and Coach) be awarded the 2016 Bishop’s Award for Excellence in Catholic School Education. The CSC were unanimous in their choice. Tom was nominated from out of his school community, not a few of whose members were students remarking in positive ways about him as a teacher/coach/person: “very knowledgeable”, “always prepared”, “he gets us to work very hard”, “always in the game”, “From him we understand it’s God, school and basketball – in that order.”

Tom is a long-time Catholic school educator (almost 40 years), having served at Cardinal Newman High School, then at Justin-Siena High School, now back at CNHS. He worships at St. Eugene Cathedral daily. He shares his faith openly with his students. He “preaches with his life”. Fittingly, one student remarked of him, “He makes us better young men.”

The selection process involved the gathering of nominations, a review of the nominees by the CSC, the CSC’s recommendation of a nominee to the Bishop, and the Bishop’s choice.

Congratulations to Tom on this exciting award. This is well-deserved and a wonderful reflection of our faculty and our school!

TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION As part of our evolving plan to visit other schools frequently to see what is new and innovative, a small team of CN Innovators visited the SCOE Maker’s Lab on February 4, 2016.

Bernadette Calhoun (Math), Lisa Quinn (Science), Joey Castor (Art), Dirk Bietau (IT) and SheriAnn Simpson (Assistant Principal for Curriculum) met with Casey Shea at the SCOE Maker’s Lab. The Maker’s Lab assists teachers with ideas for their curriculum and technology. We were able to preview some 3-D printers and to get good feedback about them prior to purchase. Mr. Shea provided the team from CN with many interesting ideas to take back to school.

Here is a bit about the lab: www.scoe.org/pub/htdocs/21c-maker.html Also, several times this year the IT team of Dirk Bietau and Ian McMurray, along with Assistant Principal SheriAnn Simpson, visited other private schools in Marin and Sonoma such as the Branson School, San Domenico, and Sonoma Academy to discuss IT matters. CN also hosted one such event in the Fall. The schools share knowledge, feedback on products, and discuss IT and classroom technology. They also conduct school tours with the group, discuss networking, and classroom technology.

SPRING SPORTS 2016 TENNIS The Cardinal Men’s Tennis Team finished 19-3 overall, and 13-1 in league, earning an NBL Co-Championship with Maria Carrillo. The Cardinals had a team playoff and successfully beat Carrillo 4-3 to earn the automatic berth for NCS competition. The team lost in a hard-fought 5-2 loss to Athenian High School in first round competition. Senior leadership was the key to Cardinal Newman’s success this year as senior standouts, Connery Gschwend, Chris Busé and Cole Henry led the way in singles. Cole Henry finished undefeated in league singles play.

Doubles were led by seniors John Paul Destruel and Trevin Anderson-Soria at number one doubles; sophomore Jake Bentham and junior Grant Wall at number two doubles; and seniors Jack Stafford and Gilbert Campos at three doubles. Cardinal Newman’s doubles teams were dominant in league with Jake and Grant going undefeated, and John Paul, Trevin, Jack and Gilbert losing only one match between them.

All-league honors were given to many of the boys of the tennis team. The Cardinals look forward to building on the success of these past years to help build a strong team for the Spring of 2017!

SWIMMING Swimming went well this year for Cardinal Newman. The team shifted back to 5:30-7:00am practices at the JC and it was great being able to swim in our home pool on a regular basis.

Gabi Edman ‘15 assisted the coaching staff this year and did an incredible job with the swimmers. Her ability to keep them motivated in the early hours of the day was great. Unfortunately, she is moving to Southern California and will be missed next season.

League went well and four swimmers made Second Team All-League; Ray Monks, Spencer Holtshult, Nick Uebel, and Devin Farber. All four athletes placed second or third in multiple events at NBLs. Monks also qualified in the 500 free at NCS. He is looking forward to two more years of swimming and hopefully breaking the school record in the 500.

MEN’S JV LACROSSE

VARSITY MEN’S LACROSSE Build a strong ship, load it, see if it floats, and make course corrections.

We started the long voyage in 2016. Our captains and seniors helped us build and sail this strong ship. The juniors, sophomores, and freshmen jumped on board and we had a very successful season.

With an overall record of 8-11 and a league record of 6-4, the boys fought hard and competed in every game. The first half of the season highlights included two wins against The Urban School of San Francisco and Alhambra, two one-goal losses to Tamalpais High School and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep, and a big 13-4 win against Rancho Cotate. The second half of the season brought solid wins against Windsor, Sonoma Academy, and Rancho for the second time.

The boys played hard against Petaluma in the NBL tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NCS tournament where we played the top seeded Marin Catholic Wildcats.

The two achievements that we are most proud of don’t relate to wins or losses.

1. The team GPA was higher than 3.7 2. We achieved our three objectives for 2016: clarity, consistency, and accountability.

Every graduation is tough. This year is particularly tough due to the fact we have 11 seniors moving on. Leaders such as Spencer Almy, Brock Bauer, Elliott Goldberg, Liam Green, Max Hoppe, and Nick Dexter will be particularly missed. Each of them profoundly contributed to their team and this program for the last four years. Next year’s team captains Alex Urasaki and Christopher Musser-Kirby have big shoes to fill. The future is very bright for this program. The rising seniors, juniors, and sophomores will take what this year’s seniors started and build on that foundation.

A special thank you goes out to the assistant coaches: Sterback, McDermott, Facto, and Fontanes-Halliday. We couldn’t have done it without our team parents, the Bauers and the Almys, and all of the other parents who helped so much behind the scenes.

The reason that this program has such a bright future is the junior varsity boys team. While their humble record of 3-6-1 overall and 2-2 in league doesn’t tell the whole story, it does demonstrate that these young men love to compete.

The boys won big against Rancho and Tamalpais but they will come back hungry for more success and many of them will form the foundation upon which we can build.

Coaches Sterback and Facto did an excellent job of leading, teaching, and guiding the boys all season long. With some extra hard work over the summer and participation in their fall and winter sports, the boys will be back in the spring ready to go.

TRACK & FIELD This year’s enthusiastic team set some new records at Cardinal Newman! Varsity girls collected the first NBL team win in Cardinal Newman history and first by a CN or Ursuline team since 2010! There were 15 athletes that qualified for North Coast Section. Four athletes had all-time list performances in eight categories: Jordon Brookshire – Triple Jump (#9 All-Time) David Knapp – Triple Jump (#10 All-Time) Anna Hartmann – 100m (#8 All-Time, 200m (#4 All-Time), 400m (#4 All-Time), Long Jump (#2 All-Time) Eliana Heath – 1600m (#7 All-Time), 3200m (#5 All-Time) Congratulations to all the athletes on a successful season!

SPORTS NEWS: CN TRACK

For the first time since Cardinal Newman went co-ed, the Lady Cardinals Varsity tracksters picked up an NBL victory Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Rancho Cotate.

That’s right--the last win was in 2011 by the then Ursuline Bears team.

SPRING SPORTS 2016 VARSITY BASEBALL The varsity baseball season was a tough one this year. The team opened up with back-toback wins against Washington and Alameda, but the schedule didn’t get any easier. It was one of the most difficult schedules in history and it proved too much. Eighteen of the twenty-four games this season were decided by three runs or less. The team continued to work hard and be competitive, but ended up on the short end many times. The overall record of 7-17 wasn’t expected by players or coaches. The team traveled for a tournament in Arizona where they bonded and came back with a 1-2 record for the trip. They played two very good DI teams from Arizona and another team from Colorado. All-Tourney awards went to sophomore infielder Beau Barrington and senior pitcher Chris McMahon.

JV BASEBALL The 2016 Cardinal Newman JV Baseball team finished their season with a record of 16-8 (9-5 in league). Out of the five losses in league play, four were by a single run. Led on the mound by Dante Cavallo and Joey Trevena and at the plate

by Dylan Tarnutzer and Hunter Brooks, this team competed well in every game. As a whole, Cardinal Newman JV was an offensive juggernaut, as demonstrated by a team-wide batting average of .359. The team scored 184 runs in their 24 games and only gave up 85 earned runs. Every player on the team played an important role in the overall success of the group. Congratulations to them all for an excellent season!

MEN’S VARSITY GOLF The Men’s Varsity golf team was a very young team with Freshmen comprising half of the team. A hungry and dedicated bunch that were eager to learn and improve, the team finished third in the North Bay League (NBL).

Junior Patrick McNeany was named to the All-League team! Other highlights include freshman Cade Imm’s 78 at Foxtail North, freshman Brendan Frazier’s 80 at Adobe Creek, and Junior Diego Lepe’s 78 at Deer Ridge GC in Brentwood. The future looks bright indeed for the Cards!

The lack of varsity experience may have been a key role in this year’s struggles. This was one of the youngest teams in some time.

Hopefully the experience of this season and the lessons learned carry over to next year for players and coaches.

FRESHMAN BASEBALL The Cardinal Newman freshman baseball team started off a little rough. We lost a lot of early games due to errors, and I think the players were nervous due to it being their first year playing at the high school level.

As the year went on, freshman baseball hit a stride. Players really stepped up as far as the pitching staff goes, and offensive play as well. Overall, we ended up around .500 with six one-run losses, all late in the game.

If we played those six innings differently, the coaches believe the team would have six more wins.

All in all, not a bad year. The coaches believe the players learned a lot about themselves and about the game. This is a great group of student athletes who will make an impact in years to come for the Cardinal Newman baseball program.

On Thursday, April 7, 2016, Lexie Raasch ’16 threw a PERFECT game---no runs, no hits, no walks, and no errors behind her in a game where CNHS beat Ukiah 5-0. This is a first for Cardinal Newman softball . . . a remarkable achievement!

WOMEN’S VARSITY SOFTBALL The 2016 Cardinal Newman Varsity Softball season was one in which many milestones were achieved. The team set a pre-season goal for victories at 14 and, prior to NCS, we had surpassed that goal. The last Varsity squad to win more games in a season was the 2006 Ursuline team that won NCS with a record of 21-3. This year’s squad also finished with a 10-4 league record, again the best effort since 2006.

Taking a cue from the San Francisco Giants, we have nicknamed our style of play “Torture” as we are frequently in close defensive struggles with our opponents, making it difficult for our fans to endure! In fact, seven of the team’s eight regular season losses were by a single run……torture indeed!

With all this being said, we had some singular moments that far outweighed the losses, including Senior pitcher Lexie Raasch’s perfect game against Ukiah and her no-hitter in the season finale at home against Maria Carrillo. While Lexi was exceptional, the team allowed only 34 runs in 23 regular season games.

This result greatly exceeded expectations and is a testament to the quality of this year’s team.

Now we will turn our sights to the North Coast Section Tournament and hope our battle tested squad can continue the journey for just a bit longer. The coaches and community are very proud of this team!

WOMEN’S VARSITY LACROSSE Congratulations to the Cardinal Newman Women’s Varsity Lacrosse team who went undefeated for a second year in the North Bay League 10-0. The Cardinals ended the season with an overall record of 13-7. Twenty-two athletes made the varsity team. The team captains were Noel Clark, Dani Gilson and Ashley Stewart. The Cardinals were led by our goalies Taylor Hextrum and Bentley Barbour who only allowed an average of 4 goals per game in league! There were 10 players selected to the All-League teams: Most Valuable Player selected by league coaches is sophomore, Kasey Braun with 70 goals and 33 assists, 1st team attack Caroline Olsen with 30 goals and Ashley Stewart with 19 goals, 1st team midfield Noel Clark, 1st team defense Kathleen Hanley; 2nd team attack freshman Mimi Almy, 2nd team midfield Maddi Foster, and 2nd team defense Dani Gilson and Grace Nonella. Honorable Mention was awarded to Grace Bedsole.

We will miss this year’s seniors Lauren Bollinger and Daphne Bradley who both played all four years at CN and Megan Cannon who joined the team as a senior. The women’s lacrosse program has been building upon the success of each season. The future of our program is promising and we look forward to Spring 2017. The coaches would like to thank the students, parents, faculty and staff for their support throughout the season.

WOMEN’S JV LACROSSE This year, we had a record turnout at Women’s Lacrosse tryouts! Our Women’s JV team had a large roster of 24 student athletes and it was a fun season!

Even though there was only one other JV team in the NBL, we can say we went undefeated in our league!

We had a total of 10 games and Junior Natalie Codding led the way with 27 goals and 5 assists for the season.

The whole team, along with captains Aislinn Zimmer, Katy Dell’Era and Grayson Weaver, worked hard,improved their skills and had a lotof fun!

GRAD NITE! 2016 It was a beautiful day at Cardinal Newman’s Ed Lloyd Field… perfect for the 2016 Commencement Ceremony.

The day was filled with excitement, anticipation, and three Valedictorians, each with a different, inspiring and spiritual speech. There were many happy faces and proud family and friends looking on, as students one by one reached the podium to receive his or her diploma, recognizing four years of accomplishment, and signaling their graduation from Cardinal Newman High School.

Once the diplomas were distributed and the traditional “turning of the tassel” was complete, the transition from candidate to graduate was accomplished. Flying hats and hugs marked the celebration. Graduates and their families exchanged hugs and posed for photos before heading over to an all-night celebration in their honor.

The graduates celebrated with great food, carnival, karaoke, and live entertainment lasting until the early hours of the morning. Their goal for the evening was to collect as many tickets as possible to win one of many prizes distributed that evening. There were a lot of silly and fun ways to get those tickets which only added to the excitement. It was continuous fun and laughter as they celebrated with their friends, and as a class, for one last time.

The evening was a HUGE success due entirely to the help and support from our parent volunteers. A BIG “thank you” goes out to the many families who generously donated their time, talents, prizes and gift cards, and the yummy baked goods that were thoroughly enjoyed by our graduates.

We absolutely could not do this without the amazing hardworking volunteers that our school has so readily available!

NEWMAN OXFORD SCHOLARS SPRING 2016 On the evening of April 7, 2016, we gathered in the Fireplace Room to hear the musings on Education from our Oxford Scholars, a topic they know well after thirteen years of school levels. From kindergarten to High School Senior, ready to step into University life, they shared their views, experiences, and insights into what works well in learning, who has been of particular help and why, and how they expect to succeed in college life. An accomplished group, they covered a variety of issues and expressed an optimism for future challenges, knowing they are leaving one environment they have mastered for a new opportunity of growth. Taking responsibility for their own education is the major reason each of them have found their way forward and succeeded, yet each got to their next destination in different ways, from multiple experiences, and various previous schools. DAY ON THE GREEN 2016 An annual tradition, Day on the Green, started out on a gorgeous Friday, celebrating the last day of classes for the academic year! The ASB leadership class organized fun events, booths and music to thank the students for a stellar year! Epicurean put on our first annual BBQ with hot dogs, hamburgers, and vegetarian burgers for all! Class Councils and various other clubs sold root beer floats, popsicles, and a variety of other desserts. After eating some treats, students enjoyed the Dunk Tank, 3 vs. 3 basketball and volleyball tournaments, a huge water slide and a relaxing environment.

Students remained long after the 1:00 dismissal to lounge on the grass and bask in the sun. All in all, it was a perfect end to a great year! See you in the Fall!

AFTERSCHOOL KARAOKE In the Winter months, Mr. Morris Acevedo and Dr. SheriAnn Simpson got together to form an afterschool Karaoke opportunity for all students, including the group of students from China.

Language teachers have long-known that music and singing promote linguistic growth. Mr. Acevedo, CN’s Music teacher, was more than willing to host students in his classroom after school on Wednesdays. The team helped students choose songs for the international students that could not only improve their English language skills, but that fit their personal interests and musical styles. We also had many of our local students join and even support our Chinese students. It was great fun and a positive experience for all regardless of singing skills. We are looking forward to holding these sessions again next winter!

CN INNOVATORS The new Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Dr. SheriAnn Simpson, challenged faculty this year to actively seek out ways to engage students in the classrooms through the use of innovation, namely with technology. Though none of the faculty competed for a personal monetary reward, President Laura Held and Principal Graham Rutherford agreed to let the winners share $5,000 for new curricular materials of their choosing dedicated to their students and classrooms next fall. We are excited to see that many teachers rose to the challenge. In all, 30 teachers received at least one thoughtful nomination and were represented as their students’ “superheroes” on the nomination board.

Students nominated teachers by providing an explanation of what was innovative in their teaching. The winners of the contest were first place Art teacher Joey Castor, and Second place winners Music teacher Morris Acevedo and English teacher Ryan Smith. Mr. Castor achieved votes for first place with well-crafted student nominations such as “he inspires me to do my best and succeed using innovative methods,” for mentoring colleagues to use various parts of the new learning management system, and for supporting student differentiation techniques in the classroom. Mr. Acevedo was nominated for his engaging presentations to colleagues, making use of RSS feeds in his LMS, work with differentiation, and his innovative approaches to teaching music with technology. Mr. Smith was nominated for his innovative TEDx, for what one student called “innovation in the way he cultivates discussion in the LMS,” and his use of Weebly for disseminating student work.

CAMPUS MINISTRY Campus ministry at Cardinal Newman has expanded this year to include new activities and new people! Our role as campus ministers is one of leadership and invitation. We have demonstrated our dedication in three ways this year: the week of feasting, volunteering at Restyle and a hosting a guest speaker from Ghana.

Our week of feasting was inspired by our search for the feast day of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman. His day is October 9th which is very near the days of St. Francis of Assisi (very Campus Ministry Students popular) and Our Lady of the Rosary (also very popular). We shared treats during the week, a rosary event in front of the statue of the Blessed Mother (with free rosaries) and renewed interest in the Prayer of St. Francis.

A group of junior level campus ministers whet to the Restyle Market Place by G&G Supermarket to volunteer. Students made the store sparkle and they learned about the services that Catholic Charities performs in Sonoma County. It was a memorable experience for all those involved.

Lastly, we enjoyed a special guest speaker, Thomas Awiapo, who came to Cardinal Newman to speak on Catholic Relief Services (CRS). These services provide much-needed food, education, and familial support in many countries around the world, including Ghana. Mr. Awiapo spoke of his childhood during which food was scarce. He was raise by his whole village since his parents died when he was very young. He went to school every day because CRS served him food when he was there. Now he travels the world to speak on behalf of CRS and to raise awareness on the importance of the Rice Bowl collection during Lent; this was the primary funding source for the food that Mr. Awiapo ate each day!

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION This past year a new program prepared students for the sacrament of Confirmation through CN Campus Ministry. The five students representing every grade level, spent time in study, prayer and retreat with Fr. Moses and Mrs. Lobbregt during the school year.

In May 2016, during the Easter season, they celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation at their respective parishes. The program will continue for the 2016-17 school year - register in August!

ARTS ALIVE!

The Arts Alive! festival at Cardinal Newman High School began seven years ago. The festival consists of a Fine Art Show, Poetry Readings, and Music and Dance performances spread over a two-week period of time. Each year, however, there are some new twists that keep the format alive and unexpected.

This year, the Arts Alive! performing arts talent show, “So Show Me”, had the addition of a poetry component with students reading original poetry between each of the musical acts. Mrs. Elizabeth Stimmel from the English Department organized the poetry component of the show and, together with the music performances, the show was one of the most exciting since Arts Alive! Began! The theme of “So Show Me” was David Bowie.

Both the Rock Ensemble Class and the Guitar Class performed David Bowie songs together with over 30 musicians on stage at the same time. Some of the standout music performances were by Remy Gassmann (junior) and Kabir Daniel (freshman).

The Fine Arts Department had their strongest show ever. The level of artistic achievement and vision was the highest ever seen at the show. Special thanks to Mr. Castor, Mr. Maul and photography teacher, Mr. McNamara for inspiring their students to not only create the show by curate, but by helping to transform the ACC as a wonderful art gallery for a week.

Poetry was highlighted on a special night where favorite poems by established poets were selected to be read out loud by the students. “Poetry Out Loud” is a program founded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Poetry Foundation has an event that encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. Special thanks to Mr. Smith and Dr. Berry for establishing this as a gem in the Arts Alive! line-up.

“Adventures in Neverland” was the theme of the Spring Dance Show which was the final event of Arts Alive! 2016. Mrs. Thompson, the CN Dance instructor, directed a Fall and Spring dance event that is the highlight of Cardinal Newman’s dance program. The show is always amazing, held at Sonoma Country Day School’s Jackson Theater where professional sound and lights help to enhance the well-choreographed show . . .

SOLAR OVEN COMPETITION

The students in Environmental Science engaged in a competition to build an oven from materials they could gather around the house, in the recycling bin, or even in a dumpster!

The only design requirement was that they used a reflective material, a clear piece of glass or plastic, interior black color, and insulation of any type. This oven could only use the power of the Sun as a heat source. There were several award categories including original design, construction, highest heat, percentage of materials used from trash, best looking, and the “ugly but effective” award! Students had to eat the food that they cooked in it, so there was pressure to do a good job! Mostly eggs and cookies....

2016 GOLF TOURNAMENT 26th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament—A Success!

Nearly one hundred golfers hit the green to play in the 26th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 2, 2016. It was a perfect day for golf and golfers were able to enjoy a full 18 holes!

Once golfers were registered and collected their raffle tickets, mulligans, and tee prizes, they enjoyed tasty bites before heading out to the course. As soon as the carts hit the course, golfers discovered that they would be “Golfing Around the World”, finding holes representing different countries such as Germany, Italy, China, Mexico, France, Cuba, and America. Golfers enjoyed food and/or drink on many holes, making for a very festive event. On Hole #3, Passport Photos were taken by Lifetouch Photography as golfers enjoyed a layover in Cuba by relaxing with cigars. Golfers also had the chance to win a car thanks to Silveira Buick GMC for making a hole-in-one car available!

Following 18 holes of golf, participants gathered in the club’s beautiful outdoor reception area for drinks and a fabulous Mexican buffet. Golfers and guests enjoyed the evening as they shared stories and viewed the auction items, raffle prizes and tournament trophy with names of past winners engraved.

Special thanks to Principal Graham Rutherford ‘77 for serving as our MC and Auctioneer this year. The final paddle raise during the live auction will help to fund the Alumni Endowment Scholarship Fund. We also want to thank our auction donors . . .

A LETTER FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION President – Nick Werle ‘97 The Cardinal Newman Alumni Association would like to thank the alumni donors and volunteers for giving time and support to Cardinal Newman High School this year. We were very pleased to award the Alumni Legacy Scholarship ($1000 awards) to two deserving students. While contributing to tuition assistance through the alumni scholarship, we also attended and volunteered at many school-related events including Cardinal Newman’s Homecoming, Fun in the Fall, Career Day, Crab Feed, Spring Legacy Gala, Alumni Golf Tournament, and many other events benefitting CNHS. We encourage all of the CN and Ursuline alumni community to attend our FREE Quarterly Alumni Luncheons. These luncheons are held on campus in July, January and April. These catered luncheons are FREE to all CN/UHS alums and are a great way to reconnect with your alma mater and friends of yesteryear.

We invite all alumni to join us next year to all of the events on our alumni calendar and to give something back to Cardinal Newman High School. We could also use new voices for the CN Alumni Association. We are always looking for new ideas and events that can help strengthen CNHS, as well as help keep the alumni strong and active. The Alumni Association Committee meets monthly to discuss ways of involving our alums of all ages, and ways to support the school through the Association.

Many events are supported through this association including our Fun in the Fall Wine & Beer Tasting event, our annual Career Day, our annual Golf Tournament, our Quarterly Alumni Luncheons, and our Homecoming festivities. The committee is always looking for new alum involvement.
