PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

W

What often draws people to Cardinal Newman High School is SPIRIT.

Spirit is found in the pride and enthusiasm our students have for their school and school community. It is found in the people of Newman, their relationships, and the feeling of belonging that brings us together, encourages us to put aside differences, and purposefully serve and celebrate each other and our greater community.

Outwardly, we experience such Spirit at rallies, sporting events, arts performances, and acknowledging academic achievement. Internally, we experience Spirit as expressed through Faith and inspired by the connection we have to God

and each other through our school’s patron, St. John Henry Newman. This is captured best in Newman’s motto, Cor ad Cor Loquitur. St. Newman believed that in prayer we speak to God heart to heart (in Latin: Cor ad Cor Loquitor = Heart speaks to Heart). His Cor ad Cor spirituality also extends to those we encounter in everyday life. Following St. Newman, we believe the heart is the source for all thinking, willing, and feeling. We witness this Spirit in our caring relationships, our student retreats, our morning prayers, and in our students’ many remarkable Christian Service projects.

Witnessing God’s Love and Spirit working in the lives of our students is one of the most profound joys we experience on our campus.

As we head into a new calendar year, I would also like to celebrate the generosity and philanthropy that was expressed for Cardinal Newman High School this last year. We would not be able to offer

the Newman Experience we do today to our more than 525 students without the generous support of so many of you. In 2021 alone more than $1.3M was raised to support our operating budget. These funds are used to bolster our tuition assistance programs, to offer our teachers competitive salaries and benefits, to enhance our campus and facilities, and to provide student programs that are stellar examples of a Catholic college prep environment.

Please enjoy this combined version of Trinity, containing our Newman school magazine and our 2021 / 2022 Annual Report. Together these two pieces showcase the Newman Spirit and tell the story of how that Spirit is manifested in our students, in our alumni who are making a difference in the world, and in our donors and benefactors who make all this possible.

As we look to the future we will be guided by our community-driven

strategic plan that will allow us to continue offering the Cardinal Newman experience to countless future students. In God’s Love and His Spirit, we grow.

Thank you for your continued support and for being a part of our Newman SPIRIT.

In Christ,

CHAPLAIN’S PRAYER

As we gather with our families and friends during this holy time, let us rekindle the spirit of love, devotion and joy that makes life worth living. The Christmas season provides us with a unique opportunity for spiritual growth as we recall together the joys and sorrows of the past year. Amidst the darkness of winter, we celebrate the birth of new light: the Light of the World, who comes to shine his love into our hearts and scatter the darkness of worry and woe. Looking forward to the dawn of a new year, I pray that God would confirm each of us in our mission of service in love.

For your prayerful nourishment, please savor Cardinal Newman’s translation of the Advent Lauds hymn, En clara vox redarguit:

Hark, a joyful voice is thrilling, And each dim and winding way Of the ancient Temple filling; Dreams, depart! for it is day.

Christ is coming!—from thy bed, Earth-bound soul, awake and spring,— With the sun new-risen to shed Health on human suffering.

Lo! to grant a pardon free, Comes a willing Lamb from Heaven; Sad and tearful, hasten we, One and all, to be forgiven.

Once again He comes in light, Girding earth with fear and woe; Lord! be Thou our loving Might, From our guilt and ghostly foe.

To the Father, and the Son, And the Spirit, who in Heaven Ever witness, Three and One, Praise on earth be ever given.

Amen.

NEWMAN SPIRIT

AS WE GATHER. AS WE CHEER. AS WE LEARN. AS WE GROW. AND AS WE LOVE.

The Cardinal Newman Spirit is evident as we cheer for one another at competitive events, during pep rallies, through the spirit of artistic creation, and through prayer. It is found in everything we do.

In fact, our school Spirit is the heart of what makes being part of Cardinal Newman so unique and special. We instill compassion, generosity, creativity, and fun in all aspects of student life. These characteristics are rooted in faith and developed in Theology classes and through Service Projects. They are critical life skills in today’s complex and challenging world.

The Cardinal Newman Spirit developed in our students gives them confidence in hope for their futures. It builds resilience to navigate challenges, compassion and empathy towards all, and helps them lead through the love of self and others.

“Newman spirit means everything to me, I love having a community that supports each other at sports games, during rallies, etc. Having school spirit brings our community together.”

During the last fiscal year, more than $1,130,000 was raised by just over 800 donors to support the students on our campus today, and into the future.

TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS

PROFILING OUR ASB CLASS

Associated Student Body, or ASB as it is called on campus, is a class made up of seniors who take great pride in their school and the spirit on campus. They are the student government on campus, and represent the many needs of our students in all that we do.

They are most often seen at school-wide rallies, dances and organizing spirit weeks - but the class is about so much more than that. It’s about leadership and teaching the next generation of our community leaders.

Whatever our students decide to pursue after they leave Cardinal Newman, we know that they will need these highly curated leadership skills to help navigate their roles in their professions, communities and in their lives. They will take the SPIRIT they have learned how to foster here on the Newman campus out into the community where they will continue to make a difference. Ms. Wilson who has been teaching the ASB class at Newman for two years says that the best part of ASB is, “the students

are empowered to make leadership decisions, and to learn the process necessary to ensure decisions are followed through.”

Each of our 25 ASB students is unique and special in their own way - but together they appreciate their position of leadership among the student body. “This particular ASB class of 2023 has high aspirations for setting the bar for the senior trip and they have worked incredibly hard to make the rallies unique and fun.”

They are a deeply caring group - who truly embody our Newman Spirit.

“ASB is special because it exists for the student body, and is run by the student body. It is an opportunity to use our experience to make the school even better for years to come.”

Julia Simon, Senior

“I love ASB because it allows me to help make Newman a better school. Making an impact on the freshmen and the future ASB classes also means a lot to me just so they can reflect on our ideas and carry on what we leave behind for future years to come and make Newman an overall better school.”

Severo Poueu, Senior

“I think ASB has set me up for success after graduation because it taught me how to levelheadedly make decisions and talk to my peers as well as adults.”

Mia Do, Senior

“ASB will set me up for success after graduation by giving me an idea to what my future could look like. I know I have experience on how to deal with conflict, the the importance of organization, communication and planning ahead.”

WE GATHER IN SPIRIT

HOMECOMING 2022

Since the 2017 Tubbs fire, homecoming at Newman has taken on a new meaning. Not only is it a school celebration, and a rite of passage for our students, but it is also a celebration of resilience. “We had just finished homecoming week when the fires came through and much of our campus burnt. Since then, and since the pandemic, Homecoming celebrations have become much more than just a rally – or a football game and a dance – but it’s about our NEWMAN SPIRIT,” Heather Wilson, Newman ASB teacher.

DANCE

The theme of Homecoming 2022 was Lan’turn’ it up. Special thank you to the ASB class for decorating and leading the homecoming celebrations throughout the week. We had over 500 students attend the dance and it was a fun night to remember.

HOMECOMING GAME AND TRADITIONS

The 2022 Newman Homecoming Princesses were escorted out onto the field by family members and celebrated by the community and student body. During the homecoming game the classes decorated golf carts which showcased their creativity and class spirit.

The homecoming princesses were:

RALLY

Senior Ian Lee played Still Dre by Dr. Dre on the piano to start the rally - once the music stopped the lights went down and over a hundred glow sticks lit up the gym. Many fun games and contests at the rally showcased the Newman spirit.

CHEER FOR THE ARTS

It is well known that receiving an education in the arts stimulates a student’s imagination, and improves their cognitive and problemsolving skills. But what the arts teaches all of us as we cheer and celebrate our performers and artists at Newman is growth. The skills that come out of an arts education can be applied to any career path and are a key component to educating the ‘whole child.’

“The arts at Cardinal Newman allows for students to connect with their creativity and explore different sides of themselves. Studying art, dance, theatre and visual arts gives students a place to shine outside of sports and academics.”

Ms. Hayden-TownPerforming Arts Teacher

Our Newman students thrive in dance, dramatic arts, digital media, graphic design, fine arts and music.

AS WE PROFILE DRAMATIC ARTS

The Cardinal Newman Dramatic Arts program prepares students interested in the production of theatre. Students explore all areas of theatre production including history, costumes, set construction, lighting and improvisation. All of this work culminates with two performances a year - and this fall our students proudly presented Bad Auditions by

AS WE PROFILE MUSIC

Our Modern Band program at Newman is one of a kind. Our musicians wowed our Eighth grade guests at the 2022 Newman Preview Day with a performance of songs that everyone knows and can sing along to - we like to refer to it as our Newman School of Rock.

Bad Actors, a comedy that tells the story of Carol Danes, a young woman, who- for her directing debut- must pull together a production of Romeo and Juliet to save her beloved community theater from ruin.

Bravo to our students who showcased their talents (not to mention comedic skills) with this great production.

In early December, our Newman dancers and dance teacher/director Gabrielle Thompson collaborated to put together an amazing show. This performance showcased and celebrated dance from all corners of the world, and encouraged our students to reach for the stars.

The team put together two shows in early December to packed crowds. A special thank you to parent volunteers and to all who worked tirelessly to make the show a success.

FALL SPORTS

ATHLETICS

Our Newman athletics program teaches our students discipline, respect, perseverance and responsibility. Being part of a team is one of the cornerstones of a Newman education, and joining one of our 26 sporting teams can often be a life changing experience for a student.

More than 80% of our students take part in athletics, and our Faculty/Staff coach many of our athletic teams.

We are proud to be Newman Strong as we celebrate our teams, and the individuals who serve as ambassadors for our school when they compete.

“One of the unique benefits of athletics is that it isn’t just limited to those who take part on a team. Each of our Cardinal Newman students participates in the spirit of athletics - whether they play on a team or not, they cheer in the stands and encourage their classmates on campus. Seeing this reflection of the Newman Spirit in everything we do is one of the best parts about the Newman Community. “

CELEBRATING OUR NEWMAN OXFORD SCHOLARS

November 22nd, our Oxford Scholars gathered in the ACC to present and defend their research papers on the war in Ukraine. Each student picked an area of interest in the conflict to explain the complications since the invasion was launched on February 24th this year. During the nine months of destruction, as the lines of control have moved back and forth, they have watched with difficulty. Trying to understand this real time problem, with its world-wide impact, students

have worked to unravel and discover truth. Mr. Jeff Scharfen again moderated the questions, helping students clarify their positions. Parents, grandparents, and siblings also came to enjoy dinner with our presenters, prepared by Epicurean, including Chicken Kiev, in a nod to the topic.

CARDINAL NEWMAN STRATEGIC PLAN

The spirit of growth at Newman is critical to the success of our current students, as well as those who will call our campus home well into the future. Our world is constantly shifting and changing and we must ensure that our students are equipped with the skills necessary to join our countless alumni who are making a difference in the world.

The Cardinal Newman Strategic Plan is the blueprint we will use for the next 5 - 10 years. It will guide our growth and help ensure we meet the needs of our students. As with any good plan, many voices came together to reflect the collective ‘we’ that makes up Cardinal Newman High School. Parents, alumni, community members, staff and board members all came together to envision the Future of Newman.

WE ARE GRATEFUL

For our Community as we Marked the 5-Year Anniversary of Tubbs Fire

Together with our faculty and staff, Cardinal Newman and St. Rose Catholic schools Gathered with Gratitude on Sunday, October 9th, 2022 in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the Tubbs fire, which damaged so much of our combined community. Through faith, togetherness and generosity we have made a significant recovery and wish to acknowledge our blessings and thank all who contributed to our restoration. The restored statue of St. Angela Merici, shared with us by the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa, was moved to the entrance of the two schools and honors our schools’ commitment to Service in our community.

“I enjoyed the Thanksgiving luncheon that the parents so graciously provided for us! What a blessing it is to have such dedicated and thoughtful parents on hand supporting this school and its mission.”

For the Funding Necessary to Build our New Chapel

Our school campus will soon begin the site and underground work for our new Chapel! The site sits just north of our gymnasium, in the heart of the Cardinal Newman campus. It will feature 8 beautiful stained-glass windows, statues of St. Angela Merici and St. John Henry Newman at its entrance and a 15’ tall cupola towering high above all other structures on campus.

A very special ‘Thank You’ to our donors who gave generously to ensure our students have a beautiful Chapel on campus as we work to support our mission to develop our students in the fullness of mind, body and soul.

Keep an eye out for future updates on the Chapel project as work begins, with an anticipated 10-month construction timeframe.

For our New Student Life Center & Library – Opening Spring 2023!

What a wonderful addition our new Student Life Center building will be for our faculty and students! Our Curriculum Committee is busy discussing all the possibilities for learning and teaching in this new area which will include an Innovation Center, Digital Lab, Tech Lab, Learning Center & Library. Additionally, this building will house a new Café with indoor and outdoor dining, our Student Lounge, small and large work rooms for students and teachers, conference rooms and a new staff lounge.

WELCOMING THE NEWEST CARDINAL NEWMAN ADDITIONS

Matthew Reeves Eggleston Junior was born on October 4th to Catherine (Sigler, ‘02) and Matt Eggleston, their fourth child. As he has three older sisters, he can expect much help as he grows. Congratulations! Cat will be back to teaching her classes in January, much excitement from our students, faculty, and staff for her.

80TH BIRTHDAY GATHERING, A CELEBRATION OF COACH ED LLOYD

On Wednesday, October 19th, players from the classes of 1968 to 1988 gathered at the Druid’s Hall to honour long time football coach Ed Lloyd, for whom the field is named. Past teammates and coaches enjoyed catching up and hearing stories shared by players and Coach. His leadership, encouragement, and care were all recognized; his mentoring and support highly appreciated as important in the growth of young men, who now look back on how fortunate they were. A testament of his influence is the large number of past players who later coached with him, eager to put back into a program that did much for them.

WE LOVE HEARING FROM OUR ALUMNI. Please reach out by emailing rutherford@cardinalnewman.org to share an update with your fellow Newman and Ursuline alumni.

JERRY ROBINSON NIGHT CELEBRATING CARDINAL NEWMAN ALUMNI

Jerry Robinson, ‘75, was named to the new California High School Football Hall of Fame, one of the inaugural 100 great players picked, representing more than 100 years of high school football, an exceptional honor for him and Cardinal Newman. He particularly thanks Ed Lloyd, first and long-time CN coach for making it possible; his teaching of technique and mental awareness helped Jerry play at the highest levels.

He also wants his family, friends, and teammates to know his appreciation, as he said, “Teammates for life!! Newman for Life!!”

Jerry was honored at the October 21st home game and presented with a crystal football. Tshirts were printed to recognize the special occasion, popular with students.

“The awards, accolades and records are great things, but what really elevates Jerry is who he is as a person.”

ALUMNI REUNION: RETURN TO ASHLAND, 35 YEARS LATER

In 1987, after visiting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival the summer before, I thought if a trip for students could be organized, they would be mesmerized by the quality of theatre and the quaint town of Ashland. Having a school family, the Coopers, who still owned a house in town, it would be possible to have the water and electricity turned on for the week.

Those who went enjoyed it tremendously, having time with friends and discovering the magic of live shows. I always found it satisfying and an adventure, disappointed to have to stop as my school role and family needs changed, but a memory I treasured.

Out of the blue, on November 22nd last year, I received an email from Tim Halbur, ‘87: “I hope you’re well! Brian Griffiths (‘87) and I had a crazy idea of reuniting the groups you took to Ashland way back in 86/87 and going back. What do you think? Want to join us?” In forty years of teaching, I never imagined such a scenario. Immediately, I replied yes. My wife Lyn, who I had begun dating back then, came on the first trip too, with her mother visiting from England when there was a last minute change for two people. She was thrilled to go back also. In June, we arranged to meet in Ashland, staying together in a house rental, organizing

the shared cooking like before, and catching up on 35 years of life changes. Tim and his fiancee Mo, came up from Los Angeles. Brian left Healdsburg, meeting Betsy Belding, ‘87, in Oakland, driving up together. Nanci Carollo, ‘88, flew from Denver to Medford to join us. Patty Dunn Dooley, ‘89, came from Sacramento with her friend Jody when her husband was unable to come last minute. While some others could not make it work this time, there is hope for future trips. The only drawback we faced was the stubborn cases of Covid that popped up amongst the cast members of some plays.

When we received the email that the Tempest would have to be canceled for the week we were there, we substituted doing our own performance together, sharing out the parts and reading from the script. This produced some remarkable faux pas lines and laughter. We adjusted the plans and were able to see two very

good shows. Walking around, seeing businesses that were still operating brought good memories. Lithia Park remains as beautiful and several outdoor art shows were enjoyed. Fortunately, a large wildfire in 2020 was stopped just north of the town, another connection for us in shared experience. Mainly, it was good to have time together, hear each other, and reflect on how fortunate we were to have gone on an adventure in 1987, being brought back to a special place in 2022 by common bonds and care. I have always felt I learn from my students; this trip showed what good teachers they are.

I pitched it to my English class students and organized a group ticket plan, which allowed us to see multiple shows and take the Backstage Tour. The week after school was out, 12 of us headed north in a school van. It was tremendous, the first of 10 trips from ‘87 to ‘96, later ones camping, providing outstanding performances with small town strolls.

CLASS OF ’72 CELEBRATES THEIR 50TH YEAR REUNION

The CNHS/UHS Class of ’72 has held Class Reunions every 5 years since their graduation, so the 50-Year celebration was very special. And the planning for their events over the years has always been enthusiastically supported by both Newman and Ursuline graduates. Their 50th Reunion at Wild Oak this summer was an amazing celebration with tremendous attendance by graduates, wives, husbands and friends. They were also privileged to have Judy DeMeo, the mother of their beloved late classmate Tom DeMeo join them. It is hard to imagine any group that has more fun when they get together than the Class of ‘72!

ALUMNI PROFILE: OLIN COHAN

F ROM NEWMAN TO NICARAGUA

A member of the Peace Corps in Nicaragua two decades ago, Olin Cohan, ‘94, saw up close the ravages of deforestation in Central America. As a building contractor and native of Occidental, he is all too familiar with California’s affordable housing crisis. For those two problems, Cohan and his business partner, Aram Terry offer one elegant solution. They recently founded Masaya Homes, which designs and builds prefabricated houses, offices and studios using teak grown on reclaimed, reforested cattle pastures in Nicaragua.

While in Nicaragua, Cohan played shortstop for a local baseball team. “His teammates would show up on horseback,” recalled his father Ken Cohan, who visited his son in Central America. Before games began, cow pies had to be removed from the outfield.

The small houses he is now building are the result, arguably, of his giant passion for baseball. Cohan, who is now 45, played third base at CN and then went on to play at St. Mary’s College in Moraga. After college, he played baseball in the Netherlands. While it did not pay especially well, he did acquire a taste for international travel. Upon returning to Sonoma County in 2001, his baseball career over, Cohan applied to the Peace Corps, and ended up in Padre Ramos, a fishing village in northwest Nicaragua.

Cohan taught grade school classes and, along with his Peace Corps partner Terry, led environmentally-focused teacher workshops, always evangelizing for conservation. Nicaragua had a “major problem” with deforestation. In developing countries, it was more profitable for the campesinos to clear-cut forests — often discarding or burning the trees — to create grasslands for cattle. “We would talk about not cutting the forest down, and planting trees, but people need to eat,” said Cohan. “So what we’re doing is trying to make forests profitable for the community. Part of that is turning wood into finished, valuable products.” Founding the company was a continuation of their work in Nicaragua, where the pair had launched UniversitÁrea Protegida, a nonprofit designed to train the country’s future environmental leaders. That program, run with assistance from the San Francisco-based Earth Island Institute, placed university students in outlying rural areas to conduct environmental thesis research.

Cohan, with business partner Terry, launched several successful business ventures in the country, including a coffee farm and a small, community-run hostel. Having a construction background, they started a company building homes on the beaches of northwest Nicaragua. They specialized in using reclaimed wood from “old haciendas” to build custom homes and surf camps. Cohan had been in the country a year or so when he met Ofelia Arteaga, who was researching the area’s birds for her thesis. The two clicked and started dating. Married in 2006, their first daughter was born a year later. A second daughter arrived in 2015. Cohan is quick to emphasize the crucial roles Ofelia played in running the hostel, doing landscape design for the construction company and serving as a co-director of the nonprofit.

In 2017, they moved to Sonoma County and he began working as director of operations for Snyder Construction, owned by Newman friend Tom Snyder. Cohan and Terry had long discussed the possibility of expanding into prefab units. With demand for such units rising and the pace of fire rebuilds slowing in Sonoma County, they decided “to take the next step,” said Cohan. While starting a new company felt like a little bit of a gamble, it also felt like exactly the right thing to do: binding together his background in construction, his passion for conservation, and his love for Nicaragua and its people. “To be honest,” he said, “there’s nothing in my life I’d rather do.”

Shawn Bunger ‘83

“We give to Cardinal Newman because it is the second house of our children. Cardinal Newman is the place where, with the help from faculty, our children become great humans and citizens of this community. We are the first influencers of our children! One day they will do the same...”

“Giving to Cardinal Newman is a gift for me as well, and it is a gift that will touch many lives. As a theology teacher, I am thrilled to be able to give to special projects, such as the construction of the new chapel. So many young minds and hearts are being formed here at Cardinal Newman, and with God at the center, they will not only be well-prepared to be leaders in the world, but also to be compassionate individuals who are ready and willing to be of service. I am grateful to be a part of it!”
